    Yep, totally agree. Film makes you slow down and think ahead. There's a whole lead in to every picture. Digital is more practical and versatile, but constantly thinking 'is this worth a frame?' means a better hit rate with film. Film is art really.

    The pentax MX is a very good camera. For just $50 you can pick up a good ME Super which is also a good camera.

    Great looking photographs!! Cologne looks fantastic. I love my MX and wholeheartedly agree with your points on film photography, and the superiority of the MX to the K1000. Keep up the great work!

    Great video. Shortly you described why maybe most of us film shooter actually enjoy it. Yes, with a film camera you need to slow down and feel the moment. Especially with a full manual device like MX. Thank you!

    Thanks for stating what should be obvious - the the MX today is a vastly superior 1st K-mount SLR to the K1000. It's a holdover from film days when the K1000 was a cheap camera. Now there are so many better options for a similar price and the MX definitely should be near the top of the list. The Olympus SLRs are also great options.

    If all you want is the ability to set shutter speed, ISO and aperture and things like the self-timer, DOF preview and clip-on accessories don't matter to you, it comes down to ergonomics. Some people with huge hands might prefer the K1000 (I don't; I love the compact aspect of the MX). The other thing is that on bright sunny days, I sometimes have trouble seeing the metering LEDs in the MX... while at the same time, on a dark background the K1000 needle system can be hard to pick out (I don't have a K1000, but I do have a Spotmatic F, which uses the same basic metering system).

    • @therealchickentender
      @therealchickentender 6 років тому

      Yup. I'd say that most of those I've known to not really use DOF preview, really have never learned how useful and beneficial DOF preview is once you begin to truly use it. Since I began utilizing it more, years ago, its literally saved shots that I would have taken and missed focus on a key element I had in frame.
      And you're right about metering display pros and cons. None are perfect. Different strokes.

    • @bigpardner
      @bigpardner 6 років тому

      Hooray The K1000 has no viewfinder info at all, does it, other then the meter needle? The MX and KX both have aperture and shutter setting display.

    A lot of film shooters seem to be making assumptions about digital shooters. I grew up shooting film, taking time and care over every shot. Now I love shooting digital but that does not mean I take any less time and care over my shots. It does not mean I feel any less of an artist. I am not checking every shot on the display after I take it and I certainly do not return from a day's digital shooting with that many more shots than I did in my film days.

      Daniel Harvard I shot film from 1974-1998. I do get way more usable shots now than I ever did with film. I don't look back that fondly to the good old film days. Sure, I learned a lot from it. I also still take my time and compose shots. Digital didn't change that. It's all just a tool to create your image. I don't miss the darkroom, and never minded the computer time editing. I can use software to get every effect old camera film produced and tweak black and white anyway I wish. I still have my old MX, MEsuper to remind me of how it used to be. I would suggest beginner photographers to start with simple film cameras, but I doubt they would take the time to do that.

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 4 роки тому

      I grew up with film too. My dad was an amateur photographer before I was born, and he had his own darkroom in our house in the '60s and '70s. I shot my own film on a Praktica BC1 from 1984 to 1989. I agree with you that the switch to digital hasn't made me any less likely to take care over every shot.
      However, Reha Alev definitely makes some good points: I take a lot more photos with a digital camera, so I definitely spend a lot longer looking at my camera's screen than I ever spent looking in my film camera's viewfinder, and as Reha says, that does take away from time I could use to simply experience the real world. Also, as he says, my hard drive is filled with so many photos that I never revisit. That's why, after all these years, I'm going back to film.
      Also, I find I miss all the tactile stuff that I got from film. Finally, film photography definitely has a "cool factor" these days, and as an older guy who misses his old camera anyway, I kinda want in on that.

    I learned shooting film, then added digital to it 20 years later but never stopped shooting film. I have a spotmatic sp, mx a nikon F50 and a d5100 and 5200. I really do like the kinesthetic element of shooting film. To me, but this is a personal thing, it's a much more embodied experience. I generally feel that my choice for a particular film ektar or tmax or fp4 etcetc makes me much more conscious of the pics I shoot, the surroundings, light, contrast, shaped and so forth. I just enjoy the analytical part of it. I don't get the same thrill with digital. However, I do use digital for wildlife and birding in which digital is more forgiving of course in case of a out of focus or overexposed shot. Nice video. Cologne is nice.

    my ratio of keeper photos on analog is way higher than digital. So I have to agree that shooting analog make s you think much harder. We were recently in south France on holiday and I had with my my trusty Pentax ME super and my KP (digital but in some ways the same sort of feeling to an analog camera). The analog photos were much better than my Digital attempts. This summer I was also in the Zoo and I think Zoo's are a place where photographers somehow congregate and I was stood at an enclosure with some birds in it. Next to me were about 5 other photographers. I had on the 200mm Pentax-M on my ME. Around me all I could hear is the clicking of digital shutters using the spray and pray method of photography. Obviously knowing that I only have 36 chances I was waiting for the perfect moment - and like a hunter with one shot I pulled the trigger just at the right moment. After I did my one shot I walked away and the lady next to me looked at me, smiled and then looked at my camera. It was as if what I had did was the antithesis of what she had just done. The feeling was superb and the photo in the end was great too.

    Fun little photo journey. I've still never visited Köln and much of Germany but need to come back.
    I noticed in the video you said "let's look at my Pentax LX" rather than MX. Perhaps a mental slip? :)
    I don't think the MX was every truly a professional camera but was more of an ultra-compact bridge camera aimed and enthusiasts. It wasn't until the LX that they truly attempted to put a heavy foot into the "pro" arena (easily, changeable screens and finders, data back, winder, etc). The MX was as step in that direction but nothing like Nikon and Canon were offering at the time.
    All that said, of the many cameras I have and have owned there are a few that I definitely like better than the MX, but...... but if I were choose just one camera to stay with me and only one - it would be the MX, for its size, ease of use, full mechanical operation and total reliability. None of my other favorites check *all* of those boxes. The MX might not be my *favorite* but its' the one I'd always keep. (For 135 format anyhow.) :)

      Thank you so much for your comments. I truly get where are you coming from. Also even though I am mostly shooting digital, the MX is always closest to my heart and it is a true joy shooting with it.
      I never realized I said LX in the video :) Have to watch it again!

    Hi
    Greetings!!
    Hope you are doing well
    I was looking for a used 35mm film camera. luckily found a MX nearby but with a mirror stuck issue in only few shutter speeds. The deal we finally settled on is 7,500 rupees(= ~ $102 usd) with the lens smc 50mm f1.4.
    wanted to check with someone, whether the issue is a deal breaker..if we need fix it how much does it going to cost me?
    thanks in advance

    So, almost 2 minutes of very quick camera look, the rest of 7 minutes are with your filming trip of centre of Köln.The presentation of camera are very vaguely and Helpful.
    Your photos are surprisingly bad, in a place where you can't make bad photos(I was there too). For me, your choice to Use b&w film was an wrong one.Except 2 photos, all are of extrem banality.

      Bit late now, but might interest someone else. I just bought an LX body for about $250 US off ebay, in better condition than I expected. Compared to the ME Super I've owned for 30yrs, the LX has a larger viewfinder, is easier to focus quickly than the ME, and being long sighted I like that the LX allows diopter correction to 0 instead of the -1 that's standard on ME super and I think MX. The ME super and MX are similar weights and dimensions, close to a modern mirrorless. The LX and K1000 are basically the same dimensions, and both heavier than ME/MX, although the K1000 is the heaviest of all. But I have to say I am loving the professional quality of the LX. If possible get both!

      You go to a photo studio to have the film developed and they can either give you actual photos and/or soft copies on a CD.
