Today we are expanding even further in the studies of “Geometric Phrasing” concepts.

This lesson today is Lesson #9 Part 2

Today we are still working on a phrase in 7/8 with the musical form: AAAB.
In Lesson 9-part 3, coming up, we will be playing the entire form 2 times on each of the 9 positions, moving all over the drum set.
I recommend for now, let’s set some realistic goals.
The goal today is to play the entire phrase on Geometric Phrasing Positions 1,2,3 & 4 before attempting to move it all around the set.
Positions 5-6-7-8-9 are a bit tricky involving cymbals, changing the feet ostinatos etc, so, for today, let’s stay for now with one ostinato, which is already a coordination challenge.
Let’s look at the stickings:
Gary Chaffee 6b = RLRRLL or LRLLRR
Gary Chaffee 6d = RLRLRR or LRLRLL
Gary Chaffee 8b = RLRRLLRR or LRLLRRLL
Gary Chaffee 4b = RLRR or LRLL
Today’s Phrase:
AAAB | AAAB
7/8 [: 6b 6b - 6d 6d - 4b |6b 6b - 6d 6d - 4b|6b 6b - 6d 6d - 4b| 8b 8b 8b 4b :]
The homework today is this:
Play this phrase with positions 1-2-3-4 with ostinato #1
(Go to Lesson 9-Part 1 for clarification on the ostinatos)
Next lesson we will be moving this bad boy all over the kit, with positions 5-6-7-8-9
