  • Possibly the most boring video I’ve ever made.
    Please don’t watch while driving or operating heavy machinery.
    After seeing suggestions for alternatives to Black Scrim 275, which is way expensive for what it is, I thought I’d put the best ones to the test. Thank you for (nearly) all the suggestions.

    Another great video. I love the idea of pulling technology from other disciplines into the video world but sadly, the purpose-made (and usually pricey) solutions are almost always the best. I'm guessing the debris netting is plastic? If you cut it with a hot knife would it melt the edges and save it making a mess? I'm guessing it would be lot's of trouble, a fire hazard, probably would stink. but yay, GO DIY!
    I did a lighting video where I addressed window light. My solution was to close the curtains.

    For years, I used a roll of automotive window tint. It was also slightly reflective, but had a more rubbery, soft texture (no crinkle crinkle). If kept clean, it would static-cling to the window and require only minimal top edge taping to remain fastened. Quite effective stuff. Sadly, I lost it on a job some years ago, and I have no idea of the brand or product number because I'd found it at a church yard sale

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  3 роки тому

      That's a good idea Kevin... I did consider window tint when I had my van done but that stuff was sticky when you got it wet? Something that sticks with static would be a great idea. 👍

    Interesting test, another related theme is how far can a window be overexposed in an interview shot before it looks too distracting? some DP's especially drama prefer it to be slightly over a stop or two. They prefer that look more than the window being correctly balanced. A more natural look for some

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  3 роки тому

      Hi Nigel... and yes, I totally agree. I suppose the amount you can push it depends on the dynamic range of the camera. In our old Beta SP days it would start to clip after not much more than 2 stops !!! 😂. Hope you're well.

    Great video, Thank you. Just wondering, Is it possible fold the 275 BlackScrim into your light kit for transportation? Lugging a roll of ND around can be awkward. Also do you know the difference between the #275 & the Rosco Blackscrim #3421 ?

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  3 роки тому

      I think they are the same thing but could be wrong. Rosco used to do one that was back on one side and silver on the other... maybe just different code numbers. I've seen Rosco use the 275 number as well ??? it's confusing.

    What an excellent idea! Why haven't I thought of it!?Here's another suggestion: anti-pollen scrims. I have crazy allergies, so I've had to install it on every window. It's very, very fine-meshed and comes in both black and white, with the white being much more opaque, and it feels like it locks out more light. And btw, the insect mesh can definitely be bought in black too; that one's on you 😬. You might be forgiven though, because it's not quite as easily available. A lot of people falsely believe that the black mesh will be less see-through, where of course the opposite is true. I've been at people's houses with white mosquito nets, and it's like someone put windows before the walls of a Japanese house. I only know Teutonic brands: Windhager (Austrian) and Tesa (German), but both have them in black.
    Update: I just dug out an insect-mesh in black. I'll do a quick test, but I don't know how to best show it to you. I'm not sure I want to upload an official UA-cam video for it

    That felt like watching a documentary film. Not a boring video at all! I always end up opting out with just blasting more light indoors but it definitely adds the cost to the budget. Often will use a roll of 0.6ND rolls and be highly selective of the windows I pick to film, but having other options definitely do help out. Thanks for making this video! Also your pad looks like a prime real estate - if it were to be in the US I'd say you've done incredibly well in life haha

    Someone ought to invent a spray-on silicon-based varnish, that can peel off. They make such peel-off paints for cars ("Plasti-Dip", dries in 15 minutes) and it must not be a stretch to imagine a translucent version.

      Really sorry it’s taken so long to reply… I was taking a break from UA-cam!
      If it's not too windy (or too high) I always try to fix it to the outside to avoid the nasty edges. sometimes it's just not possible, and you end up cutting the lovely roll to bits... which is okay if you can charge it to the client!

      Cheers Shark, very kind. Do you mean as a practical lamp that looks like a TV/Film light? I use old tungsten Dedo's lights, but that's only because they were hanging around.I also like the craze of using small dome lights with an egg crate on the front... they can look quite stylish when Gerald Undone does it? Sometime's you see old film lights on eBay that can be reconditioned with a domestic low power bulb inside. Most important thing, is make sure you can dim it down to almost zero if you need to.
