I once again set out to make a shorter video that stayed focused...and of course that didn't happen. I nerded the fuck out and I know y'all love when I do that, since it's like when your kid brings you something they drew and you put it up on the fridge lmao
What you could do is sectioning your video for people who would want to just ingest the main information so the first 10 mins of that and then the actual technical stuff at the end, can also use the youtube feature to mark the spots on what you exactly explain etc which would be pretty nice
Love your videos but indeed please please please give a summary somehow too! Even if just an X post or something in the description or an intro to the video. You're the one holding the torch of overall bloodborne emu progress for the rest of us but 30+ minutes per day is a lot!
so we need the particle effects to render correctly and for point lights not to be the same brightness as the sun's surface lol. Oh and sounds to work correctly. Beyond that, many of the issues have been sorted. Performance is def something to be improved as well. But, we're in the ballpark of it being playable, which is crazy
@@fromsoftserve yeah, and people say stop saying "were close it'll be playable in a month" I get why but it's probably also motivating for the developers and volunteers.
@@fromsoftserve but that figure is for colloquial "playable", right? The emulator forum has some sort of criteria for calling games "playable", I don't think we're that cost to those yet. Or are we?
hero lighting has always sorta bothered me, the game looks so much more immersive with it off. it's crazy how fast this whole project is coming along, keep it up!!!
I can't wait for a few year (or months lol) from now when there are a ton SERIOUS graphics overhaul mods for Bloodborne on PC. Someday, we'll have fully raytraced shadows and dynamic lighting on everything.
@@NielsGx Never say never. I don't think it's impossible that one day (years from now) there could be plugins for shadps4 which hook into the game instead of adding a layer on top. I've been playing bloodborne on PC. I don't think anything is impossible anymore.
that seperation of lighting in bloodborne was always very apparent to me cause the character model at some points in the game seems distinctively different compared to the environment. especially the black levels of the character are usually way different than in the environment. i figured it was because they were seperately lit but its nice to hear it from someone like you who actually knows how it all works. in that case i kinda always felt it a bit visually offputting and making the character feel like it doesnt quite 100% fit into the world.
I personally never liked the "Hero Lighting," it always felt unnecessary because we already had lanterns and other light sources. Which aren't even properly used since the in-game-lighting is either inconsistent or the shading isn't properly rendered. (This might be because of the game engine, similar to Bethesda, FromSoft unintentionally made their game engine pretty bad compared to older versions of Unreal Engine and other high-quality game engines that didn't share this issue.)
I’ve never played bloodborne but I can’t wait to play this, also I’ve been thinking about getting into graphics programming so your videos are very informative to me.
I actually love the hero lighting in bloodborne, there are many extra highlights and shadows in the game that give a more mysterious vibe, it also adds necessary visual clarity because the game is so damn dark
Fascinating to see behind the scenes on your process. Keep up the good work. Also if you do more vids like these in the future, please enable "capture cursor" in the obs capture settings so it's a bit easier to follow along with what you're editing.
I always appreciate hero lighting because I struggle with dark colors, and it’s juuuuust enough that I can make out surroundings. I think a mod is best for this sort of thing like, you walk with a torch to see better? But I always prefer being able to read what’s happening over immersion since there is always a level of suspension of disbelief in any game you play
I think people can forget that the goal in a game isn’t always to be as immersive as possible. When you make a game you always have to make concessions on what works and what doesn’t, and I kind of dislike the idea that visibility should be sacrificed for a game built around watching your enemies. I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the art direction if I can’t see it, you know? Even when you are with the brain of mensis, a place distinctly pitch-black, they control what you see for an effect that I think works really well! (This is a mix of towards the guy doing the hard work and comments I’m seeing) Keep up the great work! I think nodding is great for any game since it allows for options like this for folks who prefer it! I just dislike the idea that this is inherently bad
I just wanted to thank you for all the work you and others have done to get this game working... I am surprisingly enough able to actually play my favorite playstation exclusive game withe even the low end specs i have . GTX 1660 - ryzen 7 -2700x - 24gb ram. Played today and had no issues even in chalice dungeons . Even though it was a little bright in the chalice dungeons was still playable .. Really mean it i am extremely grateful.
This is looking more and more like a remaster by the day. Holy shit! 🤯 Also, do you have to manually walk into every area of the game to check for the character light? ALSO#2 Don't forget to take it easy man, take your breaks. Don't let this project consume you. Much love ❤
this exact thing is what i wanna see in these games, i constantly have issues with the way my character looks in any given environment and it's all because of the lighting
You are a hard worker, keep up the good work. I already played Bloodborne on the PS4 years ago but i enjoy emulation and your videos are very entertaining to watch. 👍 Also hero lighting is really meh and im gald you made a mod for it already as it bugged me lol.
off topic sorta, but is the Bloodborne cinematic intro ("attract mode" as called in arcade games) rendered in engine? I'm talking about where it shows the hunter sawing through the dog, and being attacked by Cleric Beast
while watching, i noticed something that always rubbed me off, but i've never really put my finger on it: specular lightning in dark places. surfaces are always shiny like they are outside, reflecting moonlight, even though it's almost pitch dark i wonder if that could be fixed without engine hacks, maybe there're some kind of area-specific cubemaps or something
A lot of games use some form of character lighting and i cant stand how ugly it is. In Bethesda's elder scrolls and fallout games theres actually a command to disable it and apparently no UA-camr on the planet knows that command exists because everyone has it enabled. Fallout 4's character lighting is the most obvious and looks SO much better with it didabled. For anyone interested the command is simply "cl off" works in skyrim as well and possibly oblivion too.
@04:19 Wait did I hear a casual reference to ‘burger town’? Like the song, “I’mmmm shitin’ on down now I must be in burger town!!” From the circa 98’ burger documentary?! Clearly they set up the lighting like this as a kind of fake global illumination. At this point I feel like you'd be best off just disabling it on everything entirely, adding your point lights and some strategically placed fill lights, and then using a ray traced GI shader with reshade.
I played bloorborne and bought a second hand PS4 just for that. I played for like 5 days 4-5 hours a day and the console just exploded because it was clogged with dust due to the completely dumb inside architecture and ventilation the PS4 had. I refuse to buy anotherone and would like to finish my playthrough as I own an original copy of the game... Just don't want to deal with the shitty hardware xd
Tastefully done I think I've the opposite opinion. I think most movies would look terrible if they didn't have per-shot lighting that doesn't really match the in-universe lightsources. Bunch of hard to see characters and dark faces. With that said, modulating it all so you don't end up with weird glowing silhouettes in the dark is a part of the artistry. The environments here are a worst case scenario though, since they've not got any sources of light whatsoever. Never played Bloodborne myself so I don't know if these are meant to have a lightmap that isn't being rendered, but having some source of light dimly filtering through the environment would probably make things look better than removing some hero lights.

Nah, hero lighting has its place. I usually prefer it for the overall composition of the picture.
Fallout 4 has this too and it's called "character lightning". You can disable it on yourself and other NPCs with the "cl off" console command.
Works in Skyrim as well. Not sure if the command is the same in oblivion but it may be. It's WAY more noticeable in fallout 4 though.
