I'm not sure how to feel about this. Some of these areas just feel "off" because of all the extra light. The baked lighting may not have made sense, physically, but it made sense visually and stylistically. In many art classes you're taught the importance of light and dark within a scene. If an area is allowed to have light, it can signify hope/purity/normalcy/openness/etc. If an area is cast in shadow, it can signify loneliness/sorrow/danger/secrecy/etc. The devs added shadows in those specific locations to convey a feeling/mood synonymous with many aspects of darkness as i listed before. Without the baked shadows, that original artistic intention is gone, and in some cases serves to directly contrast that original intention.
Yeah, that was my first impression. While technically impressive, I would prefer if the actual direction and vision were kept intact. There's a reason it was done this way, and it does look a lot better in many instances.
But the baked shadows are generated based on geometry and the light source direction/intensity, right? So unless he changed the light sources, it should have the same effect in the end...
So don't use the mod, lol. Also, how do you know artistic intention even had anything to do with it? When's the last time you had a conversation with the devs? For all we know they would have used more accurate lighting if they had a chance (time, resources permitting). Either way you can just opt to not use the mod, right?
Depends if you're a player that values realism or immersion. For some, realism IS immersion, and for some others the originator's vision is more important. Both attitudes are valid
came here to say just that. There was a good reason for the shadows and lights to be that way in the original. They were ment to set the mood and to allow areas to look visually pleasing even if not completely realistic. It's like night time in movies. Of course they couldn't make the lighting realistic in a movie, because the scene would just look dark and bland, so they have to put all sorts of lights that make no sense, but produce a visually pleasing picture. It's the same with Bloodborne and many other games. Now i'm not saying that the mod is bad or anything. I mean, sure if you like to experiment with that, and ppl would like to try it and see how it looks, that's fine, but keep in mind that you're missing the original intention and art design of the creators. And i guess we can all agree that FromSoftware has some of the best art designers in gaming.
Love the work here, I do personally prefer the baked + dynamic lighting look, some areas lose their sense of depth when theyre completely covered in either light or shadow. Looking forward to the future of bloodborne PC !

Great work! I've recently installed your Embers mod for DS3 and aside from strangely lit firelink shrine and player character's armor/face darkness (which gets worse if I use MXAO), the lightings have greatly improved in terms of realism. But I wonder if it's the right thing to do artistically, because part of environmental storytelling in these games is the lighting and the feeling we get from them even if they are artificial. But I surely hope you keep the art direction in mind while modding. Keep it up man.
well, theres sunset, moon, and the blood moon - makes sense the blood moon would be somewhat bright considering the sky color and red moon, its not THAT bright. id like to see the middle phase or forbidden woods/cainhurst to make a definite conclusion
It looks off because all the dynamic shadows are 100% sharp, as if all the areas were lit by direct sunlight with no diffusion. Because Bloodborne is so gloomy, the shadow edges should be much softer and more diffused from the clouds and gloomy atmosphere. This is especially apparent in the Forbidden Woods
It's cool, but personally a lot of the lighting looks off in the video. I agree From's baked lighting is kina crappy from a technical standpoint, but without it the game somehow looks worse. Makes me realise how much manipulating light and dark in sceneries can guide your eyes for a (imo) better experience, even if it comes at the cost of some realism. I maybe a misinformed but doesn't baked lighting have some advantages? Like it lines up with the original artistic vision of the devs, which is sometimes more preferred, especially for fantasy games like these.
This is a cool idea and more dynamic lighting will fix some issues with the original game's graphics but dynamic doesn't necessarily mean better. There's a reason why From used baked lighting and removing all of it makes the game look a lot more boring and generic even if it does admittedly look better in some cases.
Absolute mad man! You're really making bloodborne on chadps4 the true definitive edition :D Thank you for all your awesome hard work and dedication it's wild to see how good it looks without baked lighting, I can only imagine how truly beautiful it will look once the performance is better, (shame sony wont ever do this for the ps5/pro version of BB 😢) And I wonder if the bridge being shadowed was for an aesthetic reason rather than a purely light based one too!
As neat as this is I don't find much value in it. The devs of Bloodborne had a specific art direction and this includes bending reality for a specific vision/mood. Like seeing the shadow cast for a railing from the bridge doesn't really serve any purpose at all as opposed to the unrealistic lightmaps which set a particular tone and visual clarity. Keep up the great videos though, really enjoy them.
AMAZING work! Please keep it optional to have baked or dynamic lighting because I'm personally an 'original vision' guy and would rather stick to the original design choices if possible
Thank you so much for showcasing this. The baked lighting and lack of shadows in bloodborne was legitimately one of the few things that I disliked in the game. Too many spots just had super bright areas for no reason and others had random darkness too, and let's not even mention how your character randomly had their shadows dissappear in brightly lit spots for no reason too, it was incredibly inconsistent and jarring.
i mean it is fromsofts artistic vision. there is no other explanation as to why they covered more areas in shadow than there should have been. they probably liked the aesthetic more than realistic lighting.
i've been having huge adrenaline spikes every now and then nowadays, and i feel like its just me tweaking out since i got news that we'd eventually actually get bloodborne on pc. Feel like an alcohol addict with cravings but without ever drinking alcohol. I remember tearing up when i first saw that we had a running version of it on pc, its insane.
I know this is obviously not ray tracing or any of that, but would be cool to see this mod in action once the BB build of the emulator is in a "playable" and more or less optimized state, in 2K or 4K res, 60FPS (?) especially on a beefy PC. Awesome mod, well done so far! 👏
tbh I prefer the baked lightning version, at least for Yharnam part. Without baked shadows the place (for example the under the bridge section around 4:00) looks to bright and has too much sunlight. It should be submerged in shadow and moody. And it seems like there is no ingame object which would cast the shadow in the same way the baked one appears.
No. Let them not release shit. Let them not get a single cent on an IP they neglected like an ugly stepchild and donate all the money that would be forked out to them to support the emulation effort, or when we get a fully working/optimized patch, give it to the pro bono devs who deserve it.
@@QuicklyFast agree but emulation can go so far having cloud and multiplayer baked in an official steam port would be preferable hopefully from will get bloodborne back eventually
@@MANTARKAFA31 If you ask me cloud storage for game data is absolutely unnecessary for BB, while I see the allure for multiplayer, if I have to sacrifice it solely to stick it to those yuppie maggots at Sony, it's heavily worthwhile. Like seeing the shadow cast for a railing from the bridge doesn't really serve any purpose at all as opposed to the unrealistic lightmaps which set a particular tone and visual clarity. Keep up the great videos though, really enjoy them.
Bro there is no way. BB progress is so impressive. I cant fcking wait to play it 2560p 144fps with a ton higher quality than the original.
AMAZING work! Please keep it optional to have baked or dynamic lighting because I'm personally an 'original vision' guy and would rather stick to the original design choices if possible
Fuck Sony , we ball
Hunters Dream looks incredible! Proud Patton.
Amazing work ! 👏👏👏
These vids drop at the perfect time.
So amazing how fast this is progressing! If only there were a way to turn off that horrible chromatic aberration. . .
Great video as always, though a side to side comparison would be specially great
Can’t wait for a year from now when some youtuber makes a retrospective on how you saved bloodbourne for pc
Bro this looks even better than it does on PS4 already
😂
Much more immersive. Doing god's work for the fans. Much love.
There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen
This game is the only one that makes my PS4 turn on. When it can be emulated 100% it will be time to keep the PS4 in its box indefinitely.
Looks great man
13:52 The Vertex Expansion (TM) is the true eldritch horror of Bloodborne.
Parry god.
thank you for your hard work
i've been having huge adrenaline spikes every now and then nowadays, and i feel like its just me tweaking out since i got news that we'd eventually actually get bloodborne on pc.
Damn brother this is pretty impressive.
To tell you the truth my finger subscribed to you without my permission 🌹💚. Thank you for your efforts ❤
tbh I prefer the baked lightning version, at least for Yharnam part. Without baked shadows the place (for example the under the bridge section around 4:00) looks to bright and has too much sunlight. It should be submerged in shadow and moody. And it seems like there is no ingame object which would cast the shadow in the same way the baked one appears.
Again, right as you upload. It's scary.
Hopefully this whole thing makes sony anxious and eventually release an actual port to steam
I could see a potential problem for M+KB controls but that's a different thing to worry about and fixable across time.
@@MANTARKAFA31 And the chance of Sony EVER releasing one of their IPs, especially one which is a community favorite from which they could very nicely profit is almost nonexistent. Wishful thinking at best, willful ignorance at worst.
They want fortnite cod money
Not single player games
spent the first minute taking notes from the parry god himself😂
Re:Borne coming along nicely
Fanatastic work - do any of your improvements end up in the main codebase for ShadPS4 ?
@fromsoftserve great work dude really been enjoying all the videos. Curious about the possibility of dynamic shadows becoming softer/fuzzier with distance from source object? Is there a cheaper hack for this than unreals vsm’s?
Looks so great! Are the fixes shown already baked into the latest emulator version? This is incredible, I'm waiting so long to play this on PC. Thank you
if this turns out to be true and actually will be fully playable then my whole life is just going to get better man. if sony does not want to port bloodborne then someone eventually will and this guy deserves a gold medal imho
Just subbed to ur patreon. Hope u can always have the opportunity to use this same consistency for the other important things in lie
It might be a good idea to lower the brightness of the light source or something that way you can have the dynamic lighting while still keeping the gloomy dark feeling of the original game because it does seem a bit bright in some areas now. Other than that it looks great!
I want fromsoftserve to tell me not to worry about the issues in my life as he says it about the texture explosions
By the blood it's beautiful
It is glorious!
I think it needs a bit of tweaking to maintain some areas darker than others. Like Forbidden Woods looks SICK, crazy good. But other areas look too bright
I wonder if it would be possible to bake higher quality lightmaps and GI in Blender
Wait is he goated?
OMG! I didn't know George Lucas was known for his amazing Bloodborne PC modding chops!😄😄😄 The progress on this looks amazing!
