RIP Shane MacGowan 🇮🇪☘️ This is a brilliant documentary I watch every year and I still love hearing the stories, thank you Shane for making such amazing songs 💚💚
Saw this performed song performed by Kirsty and the Band back in 87, I will always remember that performance, was magic then the magic always shines though.
This is a great story song. A Christmas song that doesn't sound out of place when not played in December. It's also special to me, as it was number one, during our first Christmas as parents.
Shane MacGowan to me is the most genuine, true, real and honestly pure musician on the face of the Earth.........he is so believable and unfettered by his success and 100% Humble despite his amazing Genius......I Love the man.
A life of alcohol abuse ruins it though. Well maybe not ruin but it is sad to see him now. I lived that life and it is full of loss and sorrow. Best to get out before 40
I'll listen to this song again and again again. It fills me up, makes my chest hurt and my eyes tear every time. I'll never understand just how come these words and music and performance come together so true, so mythical but they do. Always. I'm with everyone below - Best Christmas Song Ever. I listen to it not just during the holiday, but whenever I want to feel moved inside. This doc is beautiful. Thank you.
One of the greatest songs of all time. Its not Christmas without hearing it. LOVED this documentary. Great tribute to Kirsty. God bless her, Shane, and all the Pagues. Best of New Year's to ya all.
I think that what makes this song so great is the fact that once in the while I somehow feel the "need " to listen it. Doesn't matter if it's Christmas or not. It works particularly well whenever I feel shame for something. There are other Christmas songs that I personally refuse to listen even during the festivities, like "All I want for Christmas is you", is way too much for me.
You like the way he lives his life? Jesus. This is a guy with talent to burn, and if it weren't for the senseless, self-destructive way he lives his life it's very likely he would have come out with a sheaf of songs over the years as good as this superb song.
So interesting to learn the story behind this song. For me, Fairytale of New York is one of those special songs that can only come about when the stars align. Definitely in the same league as Bohemian Rhapsody or Bridge Over Troubled Water.
I'm a bit pissed, (wine, not beer) and teary after watching. Never saw this Doc til now. Bitter/sweet, like the song, like life. My favorite Xmas song. Couldn't help but also think of the late, great Phillip Chevron's, Thousands Are Sailing, at one point in the video. It was as if they were talking about it, too. Right? Two brilliant songs on a brilliant album. I graduated High School the month Sargent Peppers was released. I hope, a 100 years from now, this record will be remembered. As for Sargent Peppers.... Whatever. This also hits home because of Kirsty. I lost my 24 year old son to brain cancer the summer of '99. Thanks for posting, Adam.
The most honest (and brilliant) Christmas song ever recorded. It's fine, I suppose, to want to believe life is all about sugar plumb faeries and happiness. But true artistry exposes truth in life and there is a reason Christmas is the top time of year when folks, so inclined, choose to take their life. And god bless Kirsty MacColl. It goes beyond words how much her music and writing, hell, even her life, has inspired and moved me throughout my own. I'll never forget the feeling of when I heard she was no longer with us. And, despite my own convictions sometimes, I always find myself, at some point during the dive, to be saying a little prayer for Kirsty and her children whenever I'm diving off Cozumel.
Shane MacGowan made history in the music world, he's real, almost innocent. Drunk or not - millions of people listen to his music, he made a mark in this world. Where's your mark?
+Paula Teixeira You're SOOOOOO right. When Kirsty died, I wanted to throw up because I always wanted to go to a Pogues show and see them do that song. My favorite Christmas song, and I don't think it can ever be beat! AND, I live in New York where Bing Crosby is from and helped win World War two with his! Which is???? Give you a hint: "WC"
Paula Teixeira I agree, his music is great, and I love all their music one heard, I've heard 3 albums and a best of album, its all brilliant, they are like the original Dropkick Murphys, I love it and I'm only 15
Fare thee well Shane nov. 30 2023 ... an amazing talented band hugely influencal energetic man and group ... have a pint of guiness tonight and toast the lads ! Rest easy Shane
And more. It's also about two young immigrants who go to the fairy tale city of NY, full of hope and dreams Then years later, they've experienced disillusionment and reality. The Great American dream - Irish-style.
'I thought it was a disgusting fucking record. It was a cynical pathetic jaded like sort of like. I quite liked the pet shop boys before then'. Shane. (Class. love it!)
RIP Shane 😢 best Christmas song ever and will always will be remembered! Come on EVERYONE let’s make this number 1 this Christmas 🎄
RIP Shane MacGowan 🇮🇪☘️ This is a brilliant documentary I watch every year and I still love hearing the stories, thank you Shane for making such amazing songs 💚💚
it's one of the greatest songs ever full stop
Sometimes a documentary takes the magic out of the song...This kind of managed to add to it.... Brilliant!
@armosa You said it so well. This documentary makes me love the song and the video even more -- as though that were possible.
A Christmas song I can listen to all year round
Kirsty MacColl and the Pogues song is by far the finest Christmas pop song ever written. To me it simply "is" our contemporary Christmas concept.
How freaking sweet is Kristy's mom.
Saw this performed song performed by Kirsty and the Band back in 87, I will always remember that performance, was magic then the magic always shines though.
Sometimes all the madness and pain thrown together makes something special. This song is special.
Like "the end" "heroine"
Still the best song ever. And the only real version.
Rest in Peace Shane. They'll be a Guinness waiting for you up in heaven, along with Kirsty. ✞🙏
This is a great story song. A Christmas song that doesn't sound out of place when not played in December. It's also special to me, as it was number one, during our first Christmas as parents.
this story should be made into a film............................now
Shane MacGowan to me is the most genuine, true, real and honestly pure musician on the face of the Earth.........he is so believable and unfettered by his success and 100% Humble despite his amazing Genius......I Love the man.
Samuel Cole not to mention he's still alive. Quite an achievement!
rideordie and still going !
A life of alcohol abuse ruins it though. Well maybe not ruin but it is sad to see him now. I lived that life and it is full of loss and sorrow. Best to get out before 40
I wasn't even alive when this song was released but it has such a special place in my heart...RIP
RIP Shane and Kirsty. A monumental song that will outlive all of us.
I miss Kirsty. Loved her music.
30:27 "Kirsty is important". god bless you Shane
This song is engrained into my heart. Forever.
I'll listen to this song again and again again. It fills me up, makes my chest hurt and my eyes tear every time. Kirsty McCall R.I.P Sadly missed.
I totally agree with ya! R.I.P beautiful Kirsty, you see?You are a huge loss
Hands down the most heart-stopping moment occurs at 1:25
***** I got rig rolled. Ohh no!!!!!
8 years later, and you still got me!
It's the only Christmas song that truly matters.
Thought I was "Rick-Rolled" at 1:25......
ashley wheeler Ha ha me too!
Yeah not ok to do that to us lol
Future generations will be singing this ,as a hym.
This was really well done!! Thank you for posting this so I could wander into it... This IS my favorite Christmas song and I HATE Christmas music...
REST IN PEACE KIRSTY and SHANE!
I just love this song. They named this human story "Fairytale of NY". Cool !! I like the way Shane lives his life.
You like the way he lives his life? Jesus. This is a guy with talent to burn, and if it weren't for the senseless, self-destructive way he lives his life it's very likely he would have come out with a sheaf of songs over the years as good as this superb song.
An exquisite song.. R.I.P Kirsty McColl and Phillip Chevron.
*MacColl
And Darryl hunt
Somewhere in the afterlife, Shane and Kristy are singing together ❤️
45:20. The incomparable voice of Dolores O’Riordan singing Galway Bay.
So interesting to learn the story behind this song. For me, Fairytale of New York is one of those special songs that can only come about when the stars align. Definitely in the same league as Bohemian Rhapsody or Bridge Over Troubled Water.
Timeless Classic.

RIP Shane so glad this video was done. Love the Pogues and Kirsty.

Shane MacGowan was born on Christmas day
Stunning song, stunning story!! ❤️
Reminds me of Kirsty on Later on New Years Eve .A classic.
I was so pissed for a minute when I thought it was a rick roll

RIP 🙏 Thank You for an eternal Xmas song
Absolutely brilliant… but when he says he misses her. Tears 😭
Its not a christmas song, its a song about love, its a song about hate, love, anger, drink, drugs and just about any other vice you can have.
That sounds like my kind of Christmas song.
Ha! Ha!
And more. It's also about two young immigrants who go to the fairy tale city of NY, full of hope and dreams Then years later, they've experienced disillusionment and reality. The Great American dream - Irish-style.
Robert Clark "love, anger, drink, drugs. ..."?? - sounds like Christmas to me
1st of November 2019
Goodluck to all of you 🍻
This years for me and you 🍻
love the story, luv the song, luv my stinking life!
The 57 dislikes must be Australians giving it a thumbs up!
What a great song with great people!
When Shane says "I miss her"...
...fuck...
All the feels, man.
Same here ....though I couldn't believe it was happening.....almost "Rick Rolled"
A great singer, great voice
When did Shane turn into Roy Orbison 😳😳😳
It's okay no one, but no one remembers the Pet Shop Boys Christmas hit song. Nothing to worry about here. Fairy Tale is forever.
1 off our own singer from Tipperary one and only Shane McGowan. Tipperary my premier county.
Magical.
Legendary. Hands down best Christmas song ever. Ever. Ever. It's an Irish song by an Irish artist, sweet sfa to do with the brits.. They wish.
eeew, dude, i'm like about to feckin' cry. jeebus. so cool.
I really like Cait O'Riordan, but Kirsty MacColl nailed it. Odd that the two best female Pogues singers married Pogues producers.
Did I just get Rick Rolled?!
Both songs were released the same year
just watched the entire video, amazing........
My family think I’m mad, but halfway through the year, June 25th, I always play all my Christmas songs and this one being the first one.
Brilliant job - many thanks!
brilliant
RIP Frank Murray
Amazing! This was really good.
Thanks do much for sharing!
just brilliant !! xx
thanks for this video!
R I P Shane. What a song..
RIP my dear Brother Shane
This years Christmas Number one would be a fitting tribute to both Shane and Kirsty
Perfection 🖤💚🎄💚🖤
God I love this song.
'I thought it was a disgusting fucking record. It was a cynical pathetic jaded like sort of like. I quite liked the pet shop boys before then'. Shane. (Class. love it!)
Shane is a nice guy, but he's a shadow of his former self
wonderful
Shane's laugh sounds like static.
I love the pogues and disagree with the comment below.this doc was more about lyrical content and breaking away from traditional Christmas hits.
Shane laughs like Ernie ( of Ernie and Bert ).
Did we just get Rick Roll'd?
How do you mean?
When Rick Astley's song started playing with no explanation, I thought this video was going to be a Rick roll loop for an hour.
I thought the same thing at first.
Just thinking that
It's a shame I just found out that Peter Dougherty passed away in 2015 R.I.P I was hoping that show of the band in New York City would go up on UA-cam
52:51 A phone call no mother ever wants to get, heartbreaking 😥
Peter I have to say Im impressed. . . . .
Didn't expect to get rick rolled here.
Just imagine they all would have grown old and would be together in a nursing home. Drinking, still fighting and singing of times long gone.
Sort of Shane made it to 65 with some rough years along the journey of life
Add subtitles, please!
Hope he's proud of it 😂 as I've known this as 'the' christmas song since I was born.. 1991
Intro had me Rickrolled
The greatest
RIP Shane, ya madman.
Rest in Peace Shane.
when Shane says "I miss her..."
Im probably the only one in Otara South Auckland who love the Pogues and the Proclaimers back in the 80s.
