GenX Thought of the Day

- Growing up GenX was a lot different than growing up today. A lot of the dumb things we did brought about warning labels, safety standards and change for the better. #builtdifferent
GenX here, That is the total truth. I love your videos, I am 58. Born in 1965, I am sure the young people today are confused by this. That makes me happy, so many hurt feeling's with the young people now. I miss the 70s and 80's, We were strong and we still are.
You forgot, "Quit crying before I give you something to REALLY cry about."
You can give them something to cry about when you leave them in a state nursing home instead of letting them drain you as they drained their own bank accounts, refusing to leave an inheritance as a means of paying back what it cost to care for them.
They usually would, too! 😂
Any woman using the "Mom Arm" on me can expect a marriage proposal in return.
"you're not dead".....one of my Dad's favorite sayings
Also..."You'll live" when i fell off the roof clearing out the gutters..LOL
😂😂😂, it's not funny that you fell off the roof, but damn dad can I get a hug at least?? I could have died!🤦♀️😂
I always say to the kids when they hurt themselves Ooop! "that's going to hurt more in your forties than it does now."
"MOM, I'M CHOKING!"
Mom: You're standing, talking, breathing. You're fine!❤
I love my momma.
Exactly how I was raised as a Gen-X dude ! LMFAO 😆 🤣 😂.
I didn't know one single kid with a food allergy when I was growing up 😁
U weren’t allowed to. That would inconvenience our parents. 😂😂
1959 baby, I have an allergy to strawberries, all berries actually. I was told not to eat any berries or I will die. When I was an itty bitty and would even reach for one, my hand would be smacked. They taught me what I needed to do to survive and sent me out the door. I have never eaten any berries my entire life not even artificial stuff. I stand corrected, I did put a strawberry on my lips about 20 years ago, just to see if I'd outgrown it. They swelled up.😅
I didn't have to be watched or coddled and nobody I knew was allergic to peanuts. Hay fever was common.
how about adhd .... didn't excist . sowww no medicine and deal with it in your own way
As someone who was born at the end of the Boomers and the dawn of GenX, I had the best of both generations. We were feral, care free and full of bruises. It was a magical time. 😂
The Gen X 'Mom arm' is too real. I do it to folks I care about too!
I just love her! Speaks truth! I'll never forget when I was young, I climbed a tree and was hanging from a branch and I yelled help to get down all I heard was you got yourself up you get yourself down, I let go and I hurt my arm and I heard is it broke? I said no then your fine! LOL!🤣
My Dad: "if its that bad come here and I'll cut it off."
Mom: "if you can't play without fighting or getting hurt get in the house and stay in. Your bedroom could use a good cleaning!"😂
Yep! Fights in the park then friends again. No parents allowed.
As a gen x'er I laugh at all your videos cause they are so spot on. I will say though that I think we over corrected and raised a soft generation but hindsight is 20/20. If I could do it all over again, I'd course correct about 50%. Lol
Oh dear lady, you just put a huge smile on my face! Representin'!
LOL...brings back both nightmares and happy memories
In Scotland they said ‘stop crying, or I’ll give you something to cry for’ 😂 good times!!
Remember, when our parents left us in the car with the windows down and a working cigarette lighter 😂😂😂 real life hot potato game… I have a scar on my arm to this day 40 years later from that burn…. FYI my mom did not take me to the hospital she put Vaseline on it and said “no better for you… yo ass won’t learn until you burn a hole through it…… “ tears never phased my mom at all😂😂😂😂…it taught me to be very loving, caring, empathetic and sympathetic to my children, family and friends in adulthood… I wouldn’t change a thing about my childhood…….I’m still alive 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have to say, I kinda raised my kids a bit, Gen x. I'm Gen x myself, and I wanted my kids to be able to deal with life on life's terms.
The living room furniture was covered in plastic - it was so great snuggling up on plastic with a blanket getting ready to watch Happy Days. Plastic runners on the carpets. Nothing ever got destroyed like today - we are such a disposable society.
What a great way to wake up from a nap!!❤️❤️
Ahahaha! The mom arm! I didn’t realize cars had seat belts till I was 15. Besides, with 4 of us under the age of 10, in the backseat of the two tone station wagon (the 70’s version of the Cadillac Escalade) there was not enough belts to go around. Besides getting smacked in the eye with metal part of the belt was part of our feral child gladiator training.
We also didn’t want our kids ending up on those milk cartons we got to eat with growing up.
I stared at those all the time enjoying a bowl of Cap'n Crunch & not recall giving a fuck at the time since my pic never appeared on said carton.
Today: Put 1 pic of a Trans on a fucking can of beer & people wanna shoot it. WTF? & I don't even fucking drink.
thats a rash that bites back
@@noahpartic7586
At least your parents bought you milk in cartons and you didn’t have to get it from the cow!
I really appreciate this video in particular. I relate to everything you said. In addition to that, I grew up in the same house as my malignant narcissistic mother. Notice that I didn't say raised by. I raised myself. Thank you very much! 🚵♀️ 🧗♀️ 👗🩴
Considering how little I had to work with ~ I'm truly amazed I'm still alive, have some sense of compassion and sanity left. No joke. 🤔😮😳😬
It would be incredible if there were a gen x reaction videos where you team up with others like a judge panel and react the language would be colorful and very funny including classic insults thanks for sharing your wonderful videos >^..^
Don't bleed on the carpet...the previous generations had a strong tendency to put their material possessions above anyone around them.
I hated how they would do thoughtless crap like buy groceries based only upon the things they liked.
I’m confused. Why buy food you don’t like?
@@lisasfriends You would have to live in the United States and around people to understand that.
I’m so glad I subscribed on here!
I would love to think that we are raising them better and kinder, but some people really are raising them soft. We are now in the era where participation trophies are king. This is true no matter if the kid participated in the activity or not.
The Mom Arm! I never had kids, but I still use it on kids and yes, grown ass adults!
It was a rare day that I came home without being scraped up, or bleeding or having nearly died doing something stupid...My mother had no clue!!
I broke my ankle not once, but TWICE when I was 8. Folks refused to take me to the doctor. So, I wrapped it up, used oversized crutches and somehow healed it twice. I think my Dad gave me an aspirin once😂😂.
My niece broke her finger once, actually twice. The first time when she actually broke it, and the second time her Dr had to reset it after I didn’t take her to the Dr. I was like, “Put some ice on it and shake it off, you’re fine.”😅
I love you... Keep that shit coming...
I agree. I treated my kids much kinder than I was treated. I use to roam around the neighborhood. I barely let my kids out of my sight.
There's definitely a spectrum across our collective experience of neglect and/or abuse.I experienced a lesser degree than many in some things and more than others in some things. Location plays a significant part in things, too, but even though I grew up in two huge cities, as opposed to a rural setting, I totally relate.
And I must say, I too tried to be kinder to my children than my parents/society were to me and they, in turn, have taught me how to do it better. I'm a work in progress 😂
Thanks for making your videos. 💙☮️🌎💕
My dad still says to my brother and me….”You’re young, you’ll get over it.” We are 1970 and 1974! Lol
Sherri you put a smile in my heart and bring back the memories of my youth and I wish life was crazy fun again.
I have a permanent scar on my forehead even now at 56 running for two inches from near hairline to eyebrow. You can still feel the indentation. That’s thanks to my mother using scotch tape on it i stead of getting me stitches. LOL, gives me character! 😂
I told my son "quit crying, like a girl" He wasn't raised to be soft. It ain't easy being the favorite parent but here...I am killing it.
Omg the arm thing! I still do that to!
Sometimes I think wow can't believe we survived all that but then I look at the world today and think today could be the day I finally get taken out....doing something ridiculously ( supposedly) safe
100% spot on. Love your channel!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Yes!!! On everything you’ve said!! ✨💫⚡️💫✨💫⚡️💥✨💫💥✨💫💥🌟💥✨💥🌟GenX🌟💫✨💥⚡️🌟💫💥✨
"... go outside and bleed..." 😂... We had it tough and didn't even know it.
I was just thinking today, about all the high places I fell out of (trees, tree forts, off roofs and once climbing a chimney). Sometimes I hit the ground head first, sometimes landing on my back, once, literally sliding down the bark of an evergreen, in my swimsuit.
And each time, I lay there for a (few) minute(s) waiting for my soul to reenter my body, mentally checked to see if I was dead, shook my head and climbed back, telling whatever friend was with me, "woah. I'm ok.... I fell SO HARD!
.....don't tell my mom!!!!"
I'm pretty sure I've used up at least SEVEN of my nine lives.
I remember breaking my ankle as a little boy and had to lay in bed all night in excruciating pain before my parents took me to the hospital. True story.
I broke and split my wrist bone falling on ice backwards once and tried to ignore it for a few hours working at a school and gave up and asked the nurse to get me a pain killer to finish my shift and I got the question to make a fist following a order to get to the er for a broke wrist I actually had to learn how to drive stick left handed that same day 😂
If you don't stop crying, I will give you something to cry about!
My mom's favorite when I was hurt - stop crying before I give you something to cry about. It wasn't a threat. If I didn't stop, she'd get the closest thing to her hand and hit me with it. We GenXers went through it. Raised my daughter with love and affection and the phrase, shut up, sit down, and read something. 😂
Gen-X'er here..😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Nothing but truth right here. YOU'RE WELCOME!!
This is not hyperbole. I lived this shit, and I'm a survivor.❤❤😂
I'm a boomer and it was just as bad and worse. We never came home til dark. You could go for miles and check stuff out. I rode my horse thru Intercontinental Airport in North Houston when they were building it. Went all thru the Skywalk. TOLD the guys building the place we were lost. That was 5 miles from home. Be home by dark is all
No don't blame warning stickers on us. We aren't the ones eating fucking tide pods 😂🤣
yup we were the reason why the younger gens have all the safety crap on everything now
And being a Gen Xer myself is why I subscribed to your channel. You speak only the truth in a crazy age of freak-show morons
🎉❤
Very common phrases my Dad used were "suck it up boy it's a long way from your heart" Usually followed with "Ah hell you ain't dead yet"
So true❤thank you! Gen Xer from Austria here
Ill never forget a friend from high school had a scar from chewing on a plug while plugged in---- def one of the warning labels from gen x 😅
The mom arm OMG!!! I REMEMBER THE MOM ARM!!!
Everything she's saying is 100 % true
Absolutely correct on the kissing the boo-boos and asking them if they're okay. But I also find myself in the next breath saying okay get over it lol... I will say this though I have taken my children to the hospital during their first 10 years more times than my parents ever did in my entire life.
Freaking LOVE your videos Sherri!
If we got hurt, our parents got PISSED!
Lol it will feel better when it quits hurting was my mother's favorite 😂
The good old mom arm!😂 yup
That was good... Right now in 86 I'm tapping on your window with some pebbles.. i becon you to come out. I'm armed with big gulp cup filled with half liquor and half soda, i have a couple joints and eddie Murphy's delirious on my walkman+ (has a external speaker, can record and a radio, i had a paper route and was resourceful) and in this alternative universe that was our first date🌹
❤️🤍💙 Jim StJames your patriot comedian Philadelphia PA 🇺🇸
I could listen to you for hours and just lose mylself un those beautiful eyes. 😍
Every word is truth.
WE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PARENTING!!!!!!!!
Gen x remembers when it was food stamps look like dollar bills that's how far we go back and Gen x stay together
Agreed! Great point😊
Yep, my mom used her hand as a seat belt too!!! 😅😅😅
I needed eye glasses when i was 12. Dad gave me a pair left by a coworker. He didn't have the time or money for no eye doctor.
Girl keep it coming😂
I was being stung by an entire wasp's nest and my parents locked the door when I tried to get in.
The mom arm lmao. I so do that with people in my car. 😂😂😂
Our dad hated timid passengers in his vehicle so he would purposely spin the car out of control during the snow and ice season without any warning so us kids were used to it as a no big deal but the mom arm would actually grab the elbow and yank your hand off the wheel so at least 1 time I remember that death grip into the grass shoulder to teach a lesson about grabbing the driver 😂
@@danlevesque5437 lmao
I got to go to Dr. One time because I got hurt infront of a lot of people. Plus one time I didnt want to do something and told my mom I should just end it all and jump in front of the train, (the train just happened to be going through town) and she told me I would have to run to get in front of it.
You speak much truth.
Yea no seat belts Super Mom Arms😂😂😂🎉❤
Oh!!!! YES!!!!!❤❤❤
AMEN SISTER!!! 🤘
and theres a reason as to why were dam near bullet proof
Rub some Dirt on it... don’t know how many times I heard that
The world could use kinder human beings, and it could also use wiser ones too.
We were raised with respect ,not like the handy generation from today
Ha ha all soooo true .I'm a 1971 baby
Did I tell you I love you today? You rock....find me! Lol
Sherri you’re so awesome! I love you! No no no, for real I love you! You’re too sweet!
Let them know that if the youngin’s do ask us questions - if they’re not expecting a lot of cussing, an hour and a half of talking about Walter down the street that has nothing at all to do to their particular question yet it does to us because we saw what happened to Walter and that’s why we don’t ask such stupid fucking questions, or not expect (my favorite past time) us to not throw random shit at nothing and claim there’s something there and they’re crazy, then leave us the fuck alone.
They asked the wrong person and it’s not that I’m having a bad day! This is just me!
We gave them their Bipolar,PTSD, and all of these other things our parents couldn’t figure out why we didn’t just do what Walter did.
I saw some of us succumb to baby boomers, they’re still living at home at 50plus…
My eighteenth birthday gift was ‘happy birthday, now either pay me room and board or get the fuck out!’
(Getting out was easy too because we had rehearsed it everyday!)
I think I made a Gen Z stupider by accident today, because I thought they wanted career advice… nope wanted fucking help making a playlist.
I can’t tell if I lost brain cells on that one, today is Monday right?
It feels like Groundhog Day! Fuck, March is over!!!!
Love ya Sherri, you crack me up, but you’re not lying about shit! Keep it up honey and let’s keep it real…coffee or drinks, let’s tear the town apart. 🧐🖕🏼❤️
Love ya!
How many of us had mothers who could hit us in the back seat of a station wagon from the driver's seat without even turning to look?
My mom is 73 and still puts her arm out,... OK when I was smaller it made sense,... I'm 3x her size, her arm is more likely to break than to stop my ass going through the windshield.
lol
Your full of wisdom
Oops that wasn't supposed to happen. oops I didn't expect that, well that just happened. I'm in my mid 50s and I still say that s***😂
Car safety standards......lol
Amen ❤
There's a difference between compassion and coddling. Kids nowadays ARE softer. Helicopter parenting is not good. Everyone's so damned sensitive and can't even stub a toe without breaking down. Kissing a boo boo is fine but moms need to stop with the coddling. Kiss the boo boo, give 'em a bandaid and send them on their way.
Best method
I was with ya until the whole 'kinder' thing. That just made them narcissists for the most part. A little compassion.. ok.. so they know you do care.. but there has to be a limit or else they never learn to handle it themselves.
🙌🏽❤
Yes!!!!
well, there's a healthy "soft" and unhealthy "soft". Both sides of the pendulum of what we experienced harshly is also not a healthy extreme.
I wish I was your neighbor!
Amen
he'll yaehhhh ♥
❤❤😊
