  • Richard Shireby & Mr Chippie assemble Chinese radio kit 3 of 4 of what we intend to do in evaluating cheap Chinese radio kits; though Mr Chippie fancies making the far too expensive 5" TV kit that wouln't even work here in the UK!
    This time only one out of tolerance capacitor (10pf instead of 6.8pf) which he swapped from our stock.
    This radio only took him about an hour & a quarter to make & was aligned on the signal generator with good results.

    I built only a few radios from kits, it is very straightforward on larger boards with less pieces because when it gets crowded the soldering is messy. I’ve been many ta7642 and lm386 designs from individually purchased components, this was very hit or miss, I recently made one on my channel that sounds too quiet and if you make it louder then the distortion and oscillations sounds bad, it can only tune on half the range of my 244pf air condenser knob, only between 500-1300 KHz, do I need to use mica tuners for ferrite rods loopstick or is there a ferrite Litz coil that can be tuned using the big chunky tuning knobs?

    These things are as tinny as hell. I wonder if you could make it sound better with a different driver transformer: Type LT400?
    Only thing its the output isn't push-pull. The problem is that the transformers are tiny and it really kills what little lower-end response there is. I have messed around with different speakers, which makes some difference, but not enough.
    Maybe there's better luck to be had with a HX-108, using a LT400 driver & LT700 output?

      Find a better bigger speaker that will work the same watts. These speakers are shit.

      @@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 Thanks guys. I've noticed that a lot of UA-camrs who show aligning vintage radios never show how we connect the SG, CRO or multimeters. Hope you can help me.

      On most vintage radios instruments are connected as shown in the service manual; that is key. So on things that don't have a service manual, experienced engineers can carry across previous arrangements to a different product & usually come up trumps.
      It's a very good point, Paul, and we'll do another kit with equipment setup in detail.

    Built ours with my 8yr old. We just have noise and I’ve tried the trimmer but nothing. I guess it’s incorrect values. Might borrow my friends signal generator.

      We tested every single component before fitting & you saw the number of out of spec parts supplied....luckily we are both electronics engineers & you can't expect people who aren't to have parts in stock or test instruments.

      UK CB radio servicing thanks - is there a cheap signal generator and oscilloscope you can buy + I found a fault - my fault. I put the white and red pots the wrong way around.. out of interest can they be replaced easily if I broke one trying to remove it 😫

      Parts can be easily & safely unsoldered using a solder sucker.There are cheap oscilloscopes under £100 & cheap signal generators about the same.

    It's a Sunday night. For me. ive baught several. Put them together. Keeps me off the streets. On a cold winter's day. Eh? The local judge calls me a "senior delinquent" I find a little super glue on the plexiglas face plate works well. I have a 455 osc that fits in a toroids tin. And a probe with a diode/antenna as a Sig generator. . I find them " pinched" off my shelf at the barn. They aren't getting much. Hi hi. Avc action is good. Non existent AGC. But after dark in the valley they get Bussey. Up to 10 channels or more tks om. 73 de kv4li

      No because the TV kit isn't for the UK 625 line 50hz standard so wouldn't work here.

      @@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 Thanks for reply, i think that is strange, because the kit manual of these tv kit explains that works suitably on a PAL system of TV, 625 lines, the only problem is the audio subcarrier, the kit come configurated for operate with a 6,5 mhz audio subcarrier but, is easy to change to 5,5 mhz, system used in Spain (PAL-B/G).

      @@MegaVHSRemember Right, well the (very expensive) kits I saw on AliExpress were distinctly for countries that use the American broadcast standard, hence my reply. That said, there is no analogue broadcast in the UK so would have to be used with a set-top box to use. The one I saw worked out at about £70 for a 5.5" black & White TV kit.

    Did you find anything very odd about the design of this radio?
    Apart from the output stage not being push-pull.
    These radios all sound lousy due to the thin case and speaker & I wish that there was something better that the radio would be capable of driving and it fit into the case.

    • @ukfmcbradioservicingTango21
      @ukfmcbradioservicingTango21  5 років тому +2

      I have to admit we didn't study the circuit much. This radio is vastly inferior to the red one we did (HX108 with the extra IF stage). There are surely better quality speakers that will fit. Strangely enough I paid more for this than the HX108. Both kits had out of tolerance components which we substituted & I dread to think how a young beginner would get on with no knowledge, or test gear.
      Richard

      I was wondering how much difference there is between the two in a test on the bench with a sig gen where you can measure the level of the RF needed to deliver 'X' output at the detector.
      I see with interest the case here has the two AA's to one side of the speaker wheras those I have come across have a cell above and below the speaker.
      They tend to rattle loose.
      I was wondering if packing the rear of the speaker with tissue would also help the poor sound as well as retain the AA cells.

    • @NJPurling
      @NJPurling 5 років тому

      The thin, flat speakers, may be more efficient because the magnetic field is not so strong.
      However, the thin case does not give you much depth to fit an alternate speaker.
      Is your kit an older one with the batteries side-by-side?
      Having the batteries above & below the speaker means they rock about on its frame making battery contact dodgy unless you pad the case with rolled toilet paper.
      I have a variant on the six transistor flavour in that it has a single 'D' cell for power. This is one that does not appear on Ebay, Aliexpress or Taobao to my knowledge.

      These are NOT radios for serious listening, just for some fun in assembling. Some of the parts seem to be rejects that failed testing. The ceramic capacitors in particular.

    I pretty sure these kits aren't made for.kids or even beginners,you need some experience with this sort of thing a shame.Chinese can't even do English instructions,I think they would sell more kits if they did.nice job on your videos

      You are quite right. If the instructions were in English & even some other languages they would sell many more kits & I agree they are not for beginners. As both Mr C & I are qualified electronics engineers we did these kits to see if it was possible to make them work....and we've proved it is; but not without substituting parts & test equipment.

    • @ukfmcbradioservicingTango21
      @ukfmcbradioservicingTango21  3 роки тому +6

      Without the alignment the radio will either not work at all or not at it's best. Furthermore, the band coverage has to be aligned to the tuning dial. It's also not a children's kit. Remember, we are professional 2-way radio engineers & built this for a laugh. Considering the number of out of spec components which we replaced, most people would have had no result.
