The core gameplay for Shenmue to me is the investigative element which needs the open world to really thrive.! I really like game like Life Is Strange which have interactive scenes but to me the compromise of the open-city design which Shenmue offers would be a shame - So unique NPCs, in-game time zone, locations to explore and live in. I could live with the Japanese Dub compromise but would still need full voice acting - I think with the scale of projects these days voice acting is really needed. I plaeyd an Indie game Knights & Bikes recently which was really stylish but the lack of voices muted the experience for me. If they can take what graphics assets they have made and boost it I think it would be a good way to go - Shenmue 3 looked fantastic, even the character models it was the poor face animations which let it down. Honestly, I feel Shenmue 3 got a lot right, it just needed more polish in Niaowu and more story.
I think for Shenmue to make that jump from niche to commercial is fixing the combat. Sleeping dogs combat is what I could see or expanding 3’s combat to include all the moves from 1 and 2. Also adding in new moves. I would like to see graphics to look like Final Fantasy 7 remake. I would also like the voice acting and facial animations to be better. With UE5 they could do what they did with Senua’s Saga with the tech they used. For NPCs to cut cost if that’s what it is they can use that metahuman thing that they do. Also adding in more side jobs. Along with you being able to hang out with friends and going around town to kill time than running around town. Now a game for everyone is a game for no one, but Shenmue has got to be brought up to modern standards. That is what was the problem some people had with 3. I just started the series and love everything about it. I just want it to get better and do great
good lord- I came here to make that SAME EXACT comment. The combat was amazing for what it was in 1999... but that was 1999. they need to cross over to the modern engines and mechanics. I KNOW people will come. Maybe give it some traction by remaking the originals with modernized touches.
Love your content! I have held Shenmue close to my heart since I first played it on Dreamcast many years ago. I have only played 1&2 I have held off playing number 3 in case it doesn’t compare to the others but I am going to try it soon. Keep up the great work my friend 😎 Relaxing Shenmue ambience videos coming soon ☮️
Thank you for the video and the tremendous amount of work on your channel (And also sorry for my english)! In my opinion they could drop most of the buyable items and focus on usefull ones to create meaning, purpose. For example, keep the possibilty to buy food on a market, maybe with a lesser amount of ingredients, but based on what you buy and take back: ryo/shenhua/her father cook a different real japanese or local chinese dish with an explanation on it's benefits for health (exemple: changing your stamina consumption on the next day, assuming the stamina system remains). The dish/meal could lend to discussions about cultural/culinary differences between china and japan (like the rabbit eating at the end of shenmue2). i would also focus on the discussion system between ryo, shenhua, and her father, with complex discussions and multiple important choices, make thoses useful for the game, make something really important of this relationship (meals/tea time/calm moments of culture sharing, enlarging ryo's vision of the world for example). They could also lower the number of NPC, making sure those remaining really seem to live here, having a clear job, family ties, and interesting interactions with them. The staying place for ryo/shenhua and her dad (and the training place) should also be a point of focus in term of usefull interactions, make it a real feel good place to stay and spend time for the player (maybe meditate, make tea, think/contemplate things, discuss, cook, train, help ryo with acupressure/acupuncture to improve his fighting moves like in the first game, etc.) Use chinese medecine, drugs (based on the plants system maybe) and make them play a part, maybe in the fighting system for example. Again, maybe make less things but make them more usefull to the game, having a cultural significance and/or a gameplay function. I know shenmue is full of side objects, collection, but if they have to reduce the amount and scope of everything: just make them usefull and/or culturally meaningfull. I felt that the third game lost some of the mysticism and feeling of a new world for ryo, hopefully leading to understand the life of his father in china and what happened to him. I'm not asking for parts when you play iwao mirroring ryo, and we don't know what the story will be, but if ryo doesn't really experience/embrace this culture i'm not sure he could "discover himself" or come to peace with what happened to his father, so i really think they must build a game filled with cultural/historical meaning, to get a satisfaying psychological crescendo and accomplishment for ryo. That, to me, would be one core focus. Make it smaller if you must, but profound, in order to make it gradually more dramatic and "mystical/Historical", as it has been implied since the begining of the first game.

We all want a wonderfull game i guess ^^ Personnaly, I'd love to be surprised by the story and the locations i guess :) I have the feeling that the classic plot in many "mafia-fiction" is having a japanese taking power over chinese triads (crying freeman, soten no ken, the street fighter, japanese movie from 1974) it has been done a lot, but i don't think shenmue is going for this since it's already going from vendetta story to something else hopefully. So story-wise: at least go beyond the classic revenge story, but it's already the case. maybe get REALLY philosophical, Historical (between landi and ryo, china and japan) and/or spiritual. i'm not sure it would be to everyone's taste but the setup is calling for it. I would like to be able to visit real local sites. I was really looking for the tulou village advertised for shenmue3. I hope we will be able to explore one, and maybe make good use of the floors, having to spy and spot things/peoples from certain floors for example. use this specific architecture. a town like chongqing would also make for an interesting vertical level design i guess, and it's an historical city too. Or the great wall obviously (connecting it with mongolian History with yanglang or ren i guess). Of course i would also like to discover luoyang, or another walled city with grey bricks and narrow paths (some kind of labyrinth that one would aprehend from the rooftops of those ground floor houses with a mini-terrace on the top sometime, in order to build the map). Or an old typical master house to train into. ahahah I don't know, there's a lot of chinese places that could be interesting to visit in order to create a unique experience, a sense of wonder i guess, but then again it depends on where the story goes ^^ Maybe they could implement different ways to get in touch, somehow, with the chi you men's leaders, other than lan di and niao sun. Maybe ryo or ren could climb the ranks as a martial artist in order to get recruited, Or conceive a game of "spotting tatoos", watching for people's ankles, neck or wrist (assuming it's historically accurate), choose wich sub group of the chi you men you will follow, and infiltrate their basement. Or get in touch with them by selling them goods, having a game of black market, becoming an important seller. All of those things could be done by playing ren in order to let the player get in touch with the chi you men the way they like (improving martial skill, infiltration, or negociation-discussions with multiple choices). Maybe we could also try to make the chi you leaders turn on each others (and connect it to chinese military tactic since japan is quite fond of the warring kingdoms period?) Infiltration style: you steal their goods, put those in another chiyoumen group's stock, and let them take the blame. or use black market to turn them against each other, selling to only one chi you men group, or lying to them. The idea is just to let the player choose the way of messing with them ^^) Oh, and ryo should be able to pick a chinese job. I'm not saying work in a paddy field, but something else than the forklift or woodcutting, something new. maybe cook in a restaurant and learn local cuisine (which would help in making dishes for the team, if the game becomes more of a teamplay somehow and you have to manage the stamina of more than one character?). maybe ryo could deliver goods, wandering on a scooter or a bicycle, hiking from town to a village atop mountains (guilin was a perfect place for it). maybe get lost in a huge forest or mountain, sleep in the wilderness around the great wall, having to find your way with a map, your pencil, like in shenmue2 disk4 but on a wider scale to get a sense of wonder in a huge country, and a sense of ruralism for an urban boy (which was what shenmue2 disk4 was going four and i think they should keep going for it). i know all of that goes against the shrinking of the game in order to get it done, but shenmue is a dream serie and one can dream ^^
The most important thing is that they reuse the framework from Shenmue 3 in terms of environmental graphics and the gameplay core elements like controls, among others.
I don't know how easy it'd be to migrate a project the size of shenmue to ue5 but surely it'd bring the eye candy capabilities to the next level. The fighting mechanics must be improved and the open world can be kept like in shenmue 3 with roadblocks depending on where we are in the story as long as we can have proper interactions with all npcs at all times, which can have millions of silly lines with the help of ai. Eating can go away, no need to add fancy mechanics besides the occasional QTE (that actually works, unlike in s3). The last few years made the technology needed widely available and even animation can be improved a lot without much expense. With more or less the same budget of shenmue 3 you can have a larger, prettier game with little to no compromise.
You'd just need the basic animations and the game logic, that shouldn't take too long to port. But if they think about converting the WHOLE Shenmue 3 game to UE5, that would take several months, depending on the potential bugs they might find. For many things, redoing them might be much faster in UE5.
I think the concessions that need to be made are using the groundwork established by Shenmue 3 in terms of the combat and some of the gameplay elements including the stamina bar and food and improving it is what is needed to make Shenmue 4 a reality
Tbh they have a lot of the Main stuff built when they made shenmue 3 but they should definitely have Japanese and English dubs personally. cost wise: 1. Building the world and assets (they could buy some from the marketplace to reduce time and man power expenses than building from scratch) 2. They could use AI voices for the NPcs, use voice actors only for main character voices would save money and time recording. 3. They could open shenmue 2 in empty unreal Engine file and they could migrate moves that’s missing from shenmue 3 and throw moves over if sega give them permission. 4. Building the story which is alot easier to do in unreal Engine 5
I feel like if we get a new Shenmue game they should add random fight encounters during the night, same as in As in the Heavens turf when you are looking around for Ren
I would love to see a "Kiwami" version of the first 3 games and then get to 4 after that. Maybe if Suzuki could work with RGG to use the Dragon engine and get the games more fluid for the battle system. Sure, maybe the new game wouldn't have the long combos and stuff, or the Virtua Fighter feel to them, but I think they could do some things maybe with different fighting styles (featured in the more recent Yakuza games (i.e., Brawler, Slugger, Dragon, etc.) where you could add different combos based on the fighting style.
A few inputs from a game dev: - UE5 development is much faster and cheaper than UE4's. Drastically cheaper, especially since they could reuse a big part of the logic and most animations. Models, on the other hand, need to be brought at a higher quality. Luckily, there are plenty of libraries with high-quality models and textures at very low cost (see PBRmax for Chinese models). - Using the Shenmue I and II code was NEVER an option: way too old to work on modern computers and likely not able to output a game for modern systems. You could recreate the exact same visuals in UE4/5 or Unity, if you really want that. But it's too late now and it wouldn't bring any benefits, whatsoever. In fact, it would be MORE expensive to make a game like that than using all the props and textures available! - I agree with the dubbing Japanese would be enough. But, to be honest, additional dubbing would cost that much overall and it could be also added later, as you pointed out. - NPCs could have text-only. Sure, it would be a step backwards compared to all the other Shenmue games, but that's a corner I'd cut if necessary. - The world can feel big without being actually big. Shenmue II is a great example. A lot can be done with Procedural Content Generation (which was pioneered by Yu Suzuki) in terms of adding elements without having to curate everything.
You have to have english voices, you have to keep the Shenmue feel, you have to upgrade the graphics to maximum creating that atmosphere on a deeper level that is all a new Shenmue game needs.
I am all for the text based dialogue being read by ai for npc's and some of the non-major character translations and then the main 6 or so characters have voice actors. That would keep costs really low for an English dub. That being said, i'd also be ok with the dub being DLC. I originally beat Shenmue 2 with Japanese dialogue because I played the DC EU game ported to 60hz, that being said most American's first played this on Xbox or the HD remakes and would prefer the English Dub.
My favorite game (I sooo want the rest of the story) I can only hope Yu finds the necessary partner(s) needed. I was broken hearted because of the launch troubles of 3. pre-ordered it for ps4 and steam, just because. (Lets go Dreams of Saturn)
Although I love the first two games and backed the third on Kickstarter, I've still not played Shenmue 3. This is mostly due to not having a computer powerful enough to run it and that it never came to Xbox, but hearing the poor reception...maybe it's for the best? I think any new game really needs to bring the series up to par with modern gaming systems. It's a niche franchise to begin with and having such archaic systems in place is only going to turn more people off.
The Resurrection of Yu Suzuki-San and Salvation of Shenmue..... 2025 - Shenmue I & II Remastered: Worldwide Release for SWITCH, XBOX, PS, PC, ETC 2026 - Shenmue III Remastered: Director's Cut 2027 - Shenmue IV 2028 - Shenmue The Animation: Season 2 2029 - Shenmue: The Movie 2030 - Shenmue V.....
@@Zack29810 he's not the only reason people love this series and franchise. Not everyone in the fandom knows who he is and there are other reasons people like this series. Corey Marshall is just one of them.
I'm personally not even a big fan of Corey. I'm just stating that the fanbase wouldn't handle it well, and that it would impact the sales. I don't think it's a stretch to say either of those things. the main character has always been voiced by the same guy. changing that would make people mad. it happened with MGSV.
@Zack29810 they can keep him but I agree that changing the English dub would be kind of weird especially if they change the dude who voices the main character of the series. They changed half of the cast in the third game but at least they kept Corey.
It just needs to be stylised in a 'dreamcast graphics' way, needs to be treated as a type of indie game that uses "retro" graphics. What you lose in pointless graphical intensity, you can gain in gameplay/story size. Then I think the studio need to just make the entire saga in one game, from start-to-finish (this guards against systems evolving beyond the series). I don't see why it cant be possible to make a massive version of Shenmue 1 and 2. "Shenmue - The complete saga" is a better idea than having a Shenmue 4. It will compile the whole story, and newcomers to the series aren't missing out on any key areas of the story. It's a no brainer.
Yu Suzuki himself has said that if Shenmue 4 happens it will have to appeal to a larger audience. No English dub or a Dreamcast style graphics isn't going to do this, it will appeal to people's nostalgia but not to new gamers. Shenmue 4 needs to grab new players and as such be a little more faster paced with gameplay and story wise. I'm not suggesting it strays too far from what Shenmue is but it needs to make changes to be successful.
@ShenmueDojoVOD I don't think it should be any more or even as expensive to make as Shenmue 3 since it won't need to be made from scratch as Shenmue 3 was. I'm not looking for a AAA game I was happy with what we got with Shenmue 3 but things have to change to make any possible sequel successful. Shenmue 3 was fan service, any new game needs to appeal to a larger audience.
Concessions are going to be the least fun part of our discussions, but since Shenmue is now Indie instead of AAA, some things are going to have to go... I really enjoyed the Shenmue games because of the quirky, yet charming English dub. But, if Japanese-only dialogue were the only way to get Shenmue 4, I would take it!
Yeah the Japanese was always much much better anyway in my opinion. I'm a PAL gamer, so I played Shenmue 2 on the Dreamcast in Japanese (there was no English dub for the Dreamcast version) and even at the time it struck me how much more convincing the whole thing was. Corey and the central cast did a decent job, but most of the NPCs in Shenmue 1 sounded like they'd just been rounded up from a passing bus or something.
I hope they make the money system better, because chopping wood was fun, but ended up getting really repetitive. If they give you more options to make money, so you don't have to chop wood all the time, and I know there's other ways to make money, but that's the most effective method. Than that would be great. It would make Shenmue-4 one of my favorite games ever. Yea, because it's too hard too obtain skill books. They also need to design a better mini game for rooster steps, because I didn't like that one. Shenmue-4, would be one of the best games ever, and make the game harder, for when you max out you'r stats. So that you'r not just a beast of a combatant.
It looks like, there going to re-publish Shenmue-3, to help fund Shenmue-4. We can look forward to PS5 Shenmue-3, and maybe X Box Series X/S. Maybe even Switch-1, 2 or whatever. Than Shenmue-4. Probably release in 2026, or 2027.
Gotta have the English voice 😫 I dunno how much time / money this would save but bin off all the gambling and mini game bollocks and like you say scale down the environments to be smaller but richer. Maybe even bin off fighting altogether for a well-made QTE type interface. Lean more into the Detroit BH / Telltale style
I believe simple things to do would be to reuse all baseline code for shenmue 3 to Shenmue 4 moving to Unreal 5. I really would't mind for this "useless" ray tracing new tech which dor shenmue would not really matter. Voicing with AI could work as well even if i would not like to lose Corey Marshal voice but anyway looking at it now vs the one used in shenmue has changed due to his ages so i could compromise. Fighting coul improve with throw and block but i could stay woth the actual one.
Lumen, which is a form of ray tracing, saves a ton of time compared to baked lighting. It can be turned off for Low Settings while still looking very good.
Screw Shenmue 4. After the Devs decided to do Epic Store exclusively for the first year AFTER people already kickstarted . . . I personally wont give them a dime. I hope the game never happens and the devs simply disappear from the indistry. Never forget! Never forgive!!!
@@ShenmueDojoVOD I never said "we". My opinions are my own. Hence: "I personally". It's obvious that devs hold gamers hostage with their bad decisions. And when they screw over gamers, which nobody can argue the Shenmue dev didn't do, I will be there to remind everyone. They literally promised Steam keys then in the 11th hour changed it to Epic exclusive for a money grab. You may be okay with being screwed over, but I am not. And the current anti-woke / pro-consumer trend in the industry that's happening now agrees with my take on the situation.
@BaradaNels You said we don't speak for most gamers. We speak for the Shenmue community who want more games. Also, let's look at some actual facts regarding steam keys shall we. As you will know the Shenmue 3 kickstarter promised a PC version or a PS4 version of the game. This was in 2015. Steam was not mentioned nor confirmed, it was assumed. When the slacker backer came out later that year, steam was not mentioned or confirmed it was assumed. 2018 and the surveys were the first time Steam was mentioned and IIRC the steam page was live then. Anyone backing the slacker backer at that point would have backed knowing it would have been steam at the time and not the majority who backed prior. There's also a clause in the Kickstarter rewards that says rewards are subject to change. So, while the understanding is there around the unrest at the time none of us backed, barring a select few, knowing it was Steam at the time. That said once it was confirmed they were changing it up they handled that situation incredibly poorly though refunds were given. Also, the people who waited for the Steam version in 2020 also got the Epic version as well so they got 2 copies of the game. Finally, YSNET were overruled by the publisher on the decision. In this case Deep Silver who pocketed all the money at time from the deal. Also, the Epic store has grown by 40m users to 270m in the last 2 years. So while it lags behind steam it is also growing though not profitable yet IIRC.

Tbh they have a lot of the Main stuff built when they made shenmue 3 but they should definitely have Japanese and English dubs personally.
cost wise:
1. Building the world and assets (they could buy some from the marketplace to reduce time and man power expenses than building from scratch)
No AI voices and no taking away jobs from potential voice actors.
Ok
Moves could be recorded with much cheaper mocap solutions nowadays. No need to rip them.
@ there is plenty of ways they can do that these days
I feel like if we get a new Shenmue game they should add random fight encounters during the night, same as in As in the Heavens turf when you are looking around for Ren
If its done tastefully then I can see it working. LAD has too many at times and it becomes a little overwhelmed
A few inputs from a game dev:
- UE5 development is much faster and cheaper than UE4's.
I trust Yu Susuki to make a very good Shenmue 4 😊
If Shenmue 4 got in development then it definitely needs to be PS5/Series S/X/Steam to reach more people.
For sure. It needs to be everywhere.
It's a tricky call
My favorite game (I sooo want the rest of the story) I can only hope Yu finds the necessary partner(s) needed.
I was broken hearted because of the launch troubles of 3. pre-ordered it for ps4 and steam, just because.
(Lets go Dreams of Saturn)
We're sure he can!
Switching from eu4 to eu5 Ask a bite a work but it is doable and will have Time on production (lightning ect)
Awesome stuff
Yes it is!

Personally I Think the Eng dub is far more essential then Japanese. Doesn’t Shenmue sell more in English speaking territories?
I think so from memory. It's how much the English is a deal breaker. Some of it is considered meme worthy.
The Resurrection of Yu Suzuki-San and Salvation of Shenmue.....
2025 - Shenmue I & II Remastered: Worldwide Release for SWITCH, XBOX, PS, PC, ETC
2026 - Shenmue III Remastered: Director's Cut
2027 - Shenmue IV
2028 - Shenmue The Animation: Season 2
2029 - Shenmue: The Movie
2030 - Shenmue V.....
Corey Marshall is an absolute necessity. no Corey Marshall would hurt the sales so significantly. people would be furious.
Corey is a legend.
I disagree. Most of the Shenmue fans don't even know who he is. They might be mad that there's no English dubbing at all, that's for sure.
The issue is around budget. Will ge get the budget to make it at such a level?
That's the things we have to discuss these as they might be the difference between getting a game or not
Yeah the Japanese was always much much better anyway in my opinion.
Just get rid of the need to eat food to keep your energy up 😂
I want Yakuza engines being used
Unfortunately I don't see that happening but maybe they could licence it. I'd be surprised.
Shenume 4 must be unreal engine 5 is required.
I want shenmue 3 to be available for Xbox
I think that'll happen in time.
Screw Shenmue 4. After the Devs decided to do Epic Store exclusively for the first year AFTER people already kickstarted . . . I personally wont give them a dime. I hope the game never happens and the devs simply disappear from the indistry.
Never forget! Never forgive!!!
That's up to you. We want more Shenmue.
@ShenmueDojoVOD You don't speak for gamers. Most couldn't care less about this title.
@@BaradaNelsAnd you don't speak for us.
Most gamers couldn't care for your comment.
