Here I take a look at the very affordable Ibanez Soundgear SR300 bass guitar, at sub £300 this is a great instrument with plenty of tonal variation on offer.

Here's what Ibanez say about the SR300
The core Soundgear philosophy has not changed since its debut in 1987 : a modern bass for players who want a thin, fast neck, and the ability to dial in any tone for any genre-from complex electric jazz to raging metal. The 2008 Soundgear has continued this tradition while adding a modern flavor. SRs are available in 4-, 5- and 6-string models with a wide variety of finishes.

Just bought this in metallic grey today. Love the tone and playability \m/
I picked one of these up in a pawn shop for $100 OTD a few years back
Best hundred bucks I ever spent hands down on a guitar
Well there was that $50 Ibanez Artist my son found at the Salvation Army last week!!
Ibanez ROCKS!! Gary/Hk
Other than the strings being a little "buzzy" I think this is a solid bass.
Alex Gianni how do you do the right muting? I sound the same when I play
Love the video Stick hoping you release more. Extremely solid reviews from start to finish.
Cheers mate, yep there are more on the way but these all revolve around me getting hold of the basses.
Take it easy!
Stick / Paul
best review of the sr300 on youtube!
just got this baby, love it so far
"....but hopefully I'm getting the character of the instrument across for you guys, which is what you want to hear in these kind of videos."
Thank you for your honesty! Very good point indeed, as many 'gear demos' are actually just opportunities for shredders to show off. You did a great job of demonstrating the full range of the instrument, and to be honest your playing was absolutely fine. You've got good clean technique, which is vital for recordings. Being able to play fast is great, but if it sounds messy you'll never be able to record anything anyway!
You're on a good path mate - keep it up, and thanks for the great videos!
Alex Khouri Thank you very much, glad you appreciate the videos, I just need to find ways of getting hold of more!
I have the SR500 and never knew the truss rod cover did that. You sir are a legend.
Very good guitar indeed, I myself own one though mine is grey. I'd definitely recommend it.
I bought this beauty today in Metallic Grey... My first bass that i got for about $320 with a cheap gig bag. Thing is killer
I've been thinking of buying one of these, thanks for the great demo, you made up my mind!, I want one :p
I REALLY have to go to another review, I just can't get past all the buzzing going on.
Action too low
I like the bridge pickup sound from Ibanez basses. They sound both well defined and punchy. In basses from other manufacturers, usually you have to choose - or you get a well defined and focused mid range, or a punchy but muddier one. Ibanez achieves a very nice sound.
Stick, great videos mate.
I own a SR300 in black and it is just amazing. Love it!
As an American, when you first stated that the bass came in at 260 pounds at 8:47, I had a heart attack there for a second! Thanks for the demo though. I've been interested in taking up bass and this review helped me narrow down which bass I may want to start with.
I have been playing one for a few years now and I am quite fond of it. Be careful about the battery compartment though. The wires for the 9 volt are quite short and thin so I have had to break out the soldering iron more than once. Thinking about switching over to some flats.
loved the review, could you have a look at the Ibanez atk200 please?
Welcome back Stick!
Please do a review on the Fender Rumble 75 amp.
Also I love that you played Readymade :)!
"Ooh.. it's red... and shiny!"
I have the sr300 and the sr305 and both are very very good basses.
I have the 370 which is pretty much the same, such a nice bass (:
Hey Paul I really like your reviews, any chance of you make on of the Jackson JS3?
Hi mate, back is all fusing up nicely, I think all the bome has joined up now! I'm using two Canon legia HFM46 cameras with raynox .66 wide angle lenses
Nice to actually hear the guitar instead of somebody just popping and slapping or doing runs ... Great vid
Great review thanks! 👍🏻🎸 what strings of your personal choice would you stick on one of these please?
Surprised at how good it sounds. Great review :)
I’ve heard this is a good Bass for beginners so that’s the one I plan on getting.
Cheers dude!
Stick
I wish they had passive pickups, love the playabillity of the neck and body, hate need for the batteries.
Hey am looking for a bass to buy . Able to pop n slap , rock, funk and abit of soloing which would be better ? This sr300 or music man sub thnx
Nice review Stick! Any plans for more drum videos?
Sr300 & sr300e is different right?? Plzzz suggest me which is better!!
hey paul im a big fan of your reviews and i find ur work with maplewood studios and andertons the most trustworthy and interesting of all reviews on the entire youtube network
In a couple of months im gonna be buying my first bass guitar n im lookin into the ibanez gsr200 n i just want to make sure of my choice
i have only found one 'decent' video by dawsons music but it has made no mention of the drawbacks the bass may pose to players
i would b grateful if u could make a review on this bass it would help me alot and many other bassists around the globe who r still confused 😅
Late reply, sorry! I can only review what I can get hold of and at the moment that's none!
+Paul 'Stick' Annis already bought a yamaha trbx174 ,
thouroughly satisfied as a beginner
How's the factory setup 'out of the box' for the SR300? (bridge, truss rod, string action, pickup height, etc). Is it good or does it need adjusting? Thanks!
think you had a bad one off, mine's been used heavily for over a year and even dropped on its headstock, still has great tuning stability and action etc
I want to play bass guitar and my some friends said that ı should buy this guitar. I listen to melodic death metal. For instance Insomnium, Dark Tranquillity. In addition disturbed is my another metal band. My question is that this guitar is suitable for playing metal music on this bass line??
Dude your hair is amazing!
Can you do an ibanez sr405qm it looks like a great 5 string
hey stick :D
is there big difference between sr300 and the rbx 170 .. which one should i buy ?
Could you do budget 5-strings comparison or something
?
I’m currently in the market for owning a new bass, so I’ve been hitting up UA-cam for demos on strings and basses, and 15/20 videos bass related material have all been English/Brits.
Something to that ?
Could there be more Bass players in the UK?
Will see what I can do
Love you to :o)
you should review the epiphone thunderbird
Has anyone tried a jackson js3 bass?
Is it better than music man sub ray 4???
I have never really learnt guitar, I've dabbled with both for a while but bass is more 'me'. Learn as much as you can!
Stick
Sorry they don't sell that model no more, the candy red model looks good as good as it sounds. Everything is on this bass, including crispy, phat tone. The tone of these little lightweight basses I like the whole sr300 series of Ibanez bassline
a bit late but they have similar bass called SR300EB CANDY APPLE now
yes
I ordered the “ E” today in the Cherry 🍒
Great video mate! Thanks alot!... Now I'm assured on sticking with Yamaha TRBX174!
Am not bashing the Ibanez... But price wise, the TRBX suits me more. Cheers!
Hi Stick! what's up.... so I wanted to ask a question, why your videos have much better sound quality than Andertons ones(EVH 100w etc)? I know you have much better equipment at the studio but, still.
Hi Stick, hows the old back doing? What camera are you using for your right side looking up? Main camera? Thanks.
Do you work at andertons
Will try, I'll also play Rreadymade right next time! LOL
Stick
You need your action adjusted. Too much string buss but when you adjust it you will love it !! I own 2 of these one is a 2009 road star orange colour and I own a 2022 veil matte blue. Both superb instruments
I love string buss 😆
I have a 2009 lefty model and the tone is great except for the G-string, for some reason the high end never existed on it (everything else is there), does anyone know a way I can improve this?
Try replacing the G string.
I heard the strings on this thing pop out because the bridge holes do not close around. What do you think after using it for a while?
***** I've had it for 1.5 years and I've never had a single problem with the strings :)
Try both mate, very different feel between the two.
Stick
this was grate
i cant find this bass in red =(
I have that Ibanez Bass as well!! but i have one in white tho
The sound is pretty cool, but I hear that damned fretbuzz I cannot escape
Dodgeavoidevade fret buzz is a matter of setup. I own one of these and fret buzz rarely occurs to me, as long as I play properly.
It is a very unforgiving bass to play you'll hear every mistake if you are not carefull enough.
Yeah I know, I did request more, give it better tone :)
Timbre idêntico ao Yamaha.
readymade... i like this guy
Trying to choose between this one and the yamaha trbx 304, please help me wich would you choose and why?
Buy the Yamaha; it is a MUUUUUUCH better bass for the money
thanks bro, so much people say the same, Im gonna do it :)
readymade!!!!
Also, for $450 that is one HELL of a tidy instrument. Slightly messy finishing in the jack socket is minor, compared to some things I've seen on basses costing more than double that.
Alex Khouri Agree
+Alex Khouri A messy input socket seems to be the norm with Ibanez. I had a SR705, beatiful bunch of wood, and I spent quite a bit on sharpening that jack socket, which was full of grime and crap. Other than that, no complains whatsoever.
RL R f
Readymade! Readymade!
Are you planning on doing more ibanez basses?
If I can get hold of them for sure!
Its available in Lefty too.
@Paul 'stick' Annis is it better than music man sub ray 4
Never had an active bass with bass knob at the front?
I'm lookin at a GSR200 used for $80 or a SR300 for $150, how do the two basses compare?
Troy D Arsewhooper I'm late to give you an idea, but I personally own a GSR200. It is not a bad starter bass and delivers for its price. Only set back is the tone pick-up gives a bit of a metallic echo which is distracting for melodies. But overall I do have fun with it for the past year, light body, nice finish, smooth neck, and a great rumble. I myself am currently looking into an SR300, I tried it at guitar center and loved the tones and feel. go up to a GC and try both out and see what you like.
Peace!
Bit buzzy
That's the correct order for EQ! Bass is always to the left!
Is this a good enough bass to record with?
Nick Fidler I've recorded a few songs with mine and it sounds pretty decent IMO.
THis bass is fucking KILLER!!
Looks great but the sound not so much. Sounds like it needs a serious fret job strait out of the box.
I never buy active basses because of those batteries. Does anyone know good batteries??
The battery lasts months in these
The only issues I found with this was the stupid screw inlets on the pickups which made it uncomfortable to rest my thumb when I played mine. I sold it but got a bargain, never gigged SR300E with the tap switch.
The jack socket isnt practical if you have a right-angled jack plug on your lead....
Cost ?
Hi, you'd need to check as this was a while back.
I liked my Powerspanned SR300E enough to buy another one
Why?
Ready made ready made
why?
Well, everything there is about personal taste but I found the factory set-up ok.
Stick
Looking at the back of this guitar where the neck is connected to the body, instead of looking like some craftsmanship went into it, to me, it looks like Ibanez just grabbed some random washers and screws and put it together. Very cheap looking. Anyone else feel the same way or is it just me?
Its pretty old, so that's probably why
Try setting up the bass before playing it..
I'm saving money to buy this bass in metallic grey
+will deely How much are you willing to spend? If it helps you, I got the Gold colored one at 229 on Amazon. Great price for a very nice bass. www.ibanez.co.jp/products/u_eb_page15.php?year=2015&cat_id=2&series_id=51&data_id=93&color=CL01
RL R sorry mate I have already bought it, thanks for the offer though
+will deely Well, was not an offer, more of a valuable information tip. But it seems odd to me the range of price differences on these. I was about to purchase one in a store, which was on sale, for US$314, and found the golden one, same bass but different color, for US$230, go figure...anyway a very good and comfortable bass. I love it, gives you a well deserved shoulder rest after dealing with MusicMan Stingrays, lol. Cheers mate!
There's something that I've never liked about any Ibanez bass sound, but I can't really tell what it is,,,
I don't dig a lot of the pickups they put in the standard SR line, when you get into the Premium they start using better electronics.
I wonder if he is British
From the South of England.
Haha I heard Readymate! Chili Peppers Fan? :D
He looks like that dude from the movie starship troopers. .
Is that good or bad?
YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR THE FRET BUZZ!!!!!
CHILI PEPPERS!!!
Made in indonesia
One of the best bass guitar for beginners.
+B0RNfree One of the best basses PERIOD.
my first bass :) but orange :D
Check out the Ibanez Mikro.
