I was a C-141A jet engine mechanic at Yokota Air Base in Japan back in 1970. One of the first C-5s had an engine change there and we were not trained on the aircraft but kinda figured it out until the pylon winches broke down with the engine half way off. Had to rehang the engine and send the winches back to Travis to get them fixed. I didn’t finish working on it as I think they might have brought a TDY crew from Travis to finish the job. It was one big ass airplane.

I flew from Travis AFB, CA, to Yokota AB, Japan, in a C-5. Yes, it is BIG. It was also a very comfortable aircraft to fly in. Did have a chance to go downstairs to see all that was inside. There were trucks and pallets of goodies. I'd fly this aircraft before any other if I had the choice.

Station at Udorn airfield 1974 I signed out for R&R expecting to take hop down to Bangkok. That same day this C5 came in never saw it in person. The whole base froze watching this land. I was able to leave on it back to the U.S. Will never forget that moment!

It's an engineering nightmare. I worked C5s at Dover in the mid/late 90s, (436 AGS) and I hated every minute of it. The back door/ramp system, dewars, landing gear and constant wiring problems never ended. That's why it's called FRED: Fucking Real Economic Disaster. I can't believe they're still flying.

I flew on the C141 and the thing I remember most about the C5 was they were broken down globally. But those guys got plenty of time off in cool places lol. When they did move they moved a lot and you certainly can't take that away from them ! Biggest mistake ever made was designating the 141 a tactical aircraft, it cracked them to piece's (crack's in the t tail you could put your hand in).

Boeing and Lockheed submitted prototypes. Lockheed changed A good boeing design and screwed it up. Boeing designed it with a hydraulic lift. Lockheed changed it to pneumatic. Huge mistake. If it was necessary to kneel it, we had to bring in jacks to get it to full height. Lots more but I aint got thetime or patience. I was there at Yokota when they began to fly them .

Took a few HOPS while I was in, conventual wisdom was to never take one on a C5 unless it was an A to B trip. If it had to make a stop, chances are it would need maintenance.
