    In the books, it was said that a vast mob of peasants, mages, and townsfolk sacked Kaer Morhen; although it is not implausible to suggest that the local soldiers got caught up in it too, as the Witcher 3 THE WILD HUNT game alludes to that. This adaptation definitely fleshes out Vesemir and the Witchers A LOT. At the same time, it does take LIBERTIES with the books and games just as the TV show did. In the books, they had stopped training new witchers since the sacking, at least a quarter of a century, before Ciri aka Cirilla came along.
    From the books, we know that Vesemir and a few young witcher recruits survived the sacking. Eskel was the only other adult witcher who survived. Geralt was already a young adult on the path when the sacking happened or was hidden away during it (THE DETAILS ARE VERY MUDDY AND HIS AGE IS TOO, for real). The knowledge of making witchers mutations/potions for the Trials of the Grasses was lost to the Witchers but the equipment and mutagen alchemy notes were still there in the books/notes. Other Witchers of the School of the Wolf were away when the sacking occurred, but they were VERY few and they died off over the years. It is true that all the mages were killed. A few of the young recruits were killed as well. The addition of Monsters to the sacking was interesting as it made the siege more action-packed. Also, Coen and Lambert do come after the sacking as they are the youngest witchers present before little Ciri arrives.
    AND FYI: The boys went through the Trial of the Grasses which makes them undergo mutations via mutagens or monster/magic genes inserted into their body that makes them have faster reflexes, more muscle strength, faster metabolism, and slower heart rates than a normal human.
    In Vesemir's youth, it is true that Deglan met him, but the games and books state that he was taken in by Deglan via the Law of Surprise (He was taken by Deglan as a prize of payment for killing a monster), not Vesemir following him to Kaer Morhen and willingly choosing to be a witcher. Still, I think the new lore for Vesemir's young past does still work with his Video game adaptation as he is much older and wiser in the W3 wild hunt and we can tell that he has seen everything. I definitely feel sad about what happened to Illanya, who was a welcome addition to the lore. Seeing Vesemir crying was a moment of beauty and grace portraying a tender, tragic moment.
    As for the world-building of the film: It's a pretty honest take on the Witcher caste; Witchers have been regulated to Monster Slayers and on occasion, some have taken mercenary work. The School of the Cat pretty much turned into Hireable Assassins by the time of the Witcher 3 and the various other Schools fell into disrepair/suffered similar fates to the School of the Wolf. (The Schools in the South fell much quicker and long before than the ones in the North). We know that there are few Witchers by the time of the TV show and the books offer glimpses into the Cat and the Griffon ones.
    The thing that piques my interest is the monster hybrid cross-breeding, which kinda seems suss on the surface because it was not part of the Books or Games. Again Liberties were taken with the anime film. I still like the monsters of the Witcher the best, especially in The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.
    Overall, I loved the film. It tugged my heart and made me love Geralt and Vesemir even more. AND NO GERALT WAS NEVER BALD> His hair turned from his natural brown to full white as a result of the mutations. This choice of bald was effing stupid and it made me laugh because that's too funny. I mean, the kid already became a Witcher. Why put him through balding XD?

      you seem to be taking the witcher 3 world building and stories too seriously even tho they are not book canon, also geralt was bald cause of the mutation it relates to his pigmentation changes nicely, all in all the show wasnt perfect for the avid witcher fans but it was good, it wasnt unwatchable, and for the non avid witcher fan its a pretty damn good movie. i am satisfied with it tbh even tho there are some complaints they didnt butcher it this time which is enough for me

      **SPOILERS**
      There's some inconsistencies there, mate. No hate, just want to point them out. The Trial of the Grasses was a very strict diet of roots, grasses, mushrooms, etc, and prescribed potions that accelerated growth and opened blood vessels to prepare the body to be able to undertake the mutagen transformation. They indeed still used the recipe of the diet and potions on Ciri when she was a child at Kaer Morhen which prompted Triss to beg Vesemir not to subject Ciri with the grasses as she should be able to retain her ability to bear children. They couldn't have subjected her to the mutagen transformation because they didn't know how, nor had a sorcerer present to perform the ritual.
      Now, with that said, they were not able to mutate any more witchers since the sacking - so then how could Lambert and Cohen come later when they were fully mutated witchers in the books and game? No, they were ALL present and already Witchers at the time of the sacking.
      According to book lore, all the witchers we know including Geralt - were out on the path when the sacking happened, leaving the instructors and the children at the keep to defend themselves. ALL were killed, including the sorcerers, except for Vesemir, who was mistaken for already being dead. When he woke up after the battle was over, he realized everyone had been killed and the castle nearly destroyed. It makes perfect sense that Tetra and Kitju summoned monsters/creatures to fight for them and it's poetic irony as Vesemir said in the movie, "Monsters to fight monsters, how unlike your predecessors."
      It's quite an arrogant and narrow-minded statement to say in all caps that Geralt was never bald. The trial of the grasses altered the body's hormones and the mutagen transformation was traumatic to the body and we know from the books that Geralt had undergone additional mutagen transformations that the other boys did not. Going through all that was like nothing you or I could ever experience let alone survive. Makes perfect sense that one of the manifestations of that trauma would be total hair loss. We know his hair grows back and it's white. It was also a writing technique to "hide" the fact the boy was Geralt until the dramatic reveal at the end. It served its purpose.
      The monster cross-breeding or engineering of monsters is actually book lore. In the final book "Season of Storms," Geralt kills a kikimore-ish type monster (at least in my mind) and finds a serial number or UPC code if you will, on it and it wasn't the first one he'd encountered. This serves as the backdrop for that whole story line.
      Circling back to the sacking of Kaer Morhen. It worked the way it was written here for the movie as it was far more exciting and engaging, had high stakes and emotion than how it was "told" to us by the original author.
      A goal was also given to Vesemir to raise "better witchers" and to make them into "Something More" which will translate beautifully in The Witcher Season 2. Having watched NotW, we will appreciate Season 2 that much more :).

    My biggest issues with the story was 2 things:
    1) Witchers Creating Monsters for work and place in society, to survive. It's a cool plot if the main goal wasn't money, but it feels a bit too much.
    2) I still can't quite get over the fact they sent or teleported, a large group of young kids into a swamp Swarmed with deadly monsters: Ghouls, Drowners and Wraiths.etc... - completely unarmed, without guidance, without Trial of Grasses Mutations... Nothing.
    It's not convincing. It makes no sense. Both economically and training wise.
    It's like sending a group of Pre-Army School Teenagers into enemy horded battlefield without weapons or training.
    I thought this was some illusionary Trial, because there were TOO MUCH MONSTERS and too msny different kinds working together instead of killing each other... But sadly everyone died expect Vesemir and red hair Luca and 1 armed guy. Which by the way made little sense and there's no way anybody could escape that alive.
    Moreover, we are led to believe that the same Massacre Field Trip happened to kid Geralt and only 3 more kids who survived from that batch?...
    Why would they ever do that? It doesn't make sense..It's not proving anything about their skills nor chances of survival.
    How can they even survive that?
    Even a trained Witcher in a swamp terrain, surrounded by Wraiths and Ghouls and flying monsters ... Would have hard time coming out in one piece.
    I hoped it's some Illusion Nightmare Test, but nope. They deliberately slaughtered 90% of their new recruits. Good job Witcher School.

      If there were a less and less contracts for monsters, then make more witchers are not clever. If you have a whole system of child gathering(which was great in times of great need), you can either change the system(with no means of effective communication), or you just get the students through crazy tests. Less witchers, more stable environment.
      For me, it is perfectly rational. And emotionally horrible. These "occasions" definitely happened in our human history.

      right... this movie irks me because it seems like the kind of movie that let the villains win. I thought it was only proper that Tetra wanted and should have eradicated the Witchers. Her death was unjust. Vessimir, protecting Daegan (who wants to protect the money-making mutagenic Magi) was disgusting to watch. That bitch Ilyana was an ENABLER and USeless. I dislike VEssimir's character and I hope to see him suffer and die in a satisfying way. I thought I'd end up rooting for the witchers by the end of the movie, but now I feel the opposite.

    • @SlayerSeraph
      @SlayerSeraph 3 роки тому

      @@zivotshonzou I disagree. What they did if anything is wasting out great potential talents and possibly killing off stupidly - some of the best would be Witchers protegees they could've produced.
      Also realistically none of them would survive this. Throw a grown Witcher without weapons, mutations, armor and tools into that swamp and he would've had a hard time...
      Also, instead of reducing their numbers or creating more jobs, which is silly, they could've broaden horizons and expand.
      There will always be another monster. Many of them are undead or cursed beings created without breeding, or man made/caused, others are supernatural phenomenon.
      They could've moved into new regions, kingdoms, realms, set out on expeditions, or even go to another continent.

      Well, two things completely made up for this movie, not in any tiny part originating from the source material. Both trash. Agree.
      1. It would make sense in another universe, but when we see in Season 1 (won't consider the books, just their own universe) that witchers are still considered professionals by some folk, that creates a huge hole in worldbuilding for me. I would personally not trust someone who created monsters to hunt them themselves. Every contract can be scam. I bet the hunt for witchers wouldn't end at Kaer Morhen, it would take every witcher in Kaedwen and beyond. It's like you said, too much.
      2. Trial of the Grasses and Changes were enough to sort out the weak ones. Such trial with huge monsters is unnecessary, what they are learing for this couple minutes, how to run?
      But kinda liked Vesemir's plot and his change.

    • @rabbitazteca23
      @rabbitazteca23 3 роки тому +1

      @@patrykadamkiewicz340 Also in the games (I haven't read the books), the Witchers are known as professional monster hunters... them getting exposed to be the ones creating more and more stronger monsters will only make them lose their business in the long run since people will not trust them any longer. I know I wouldn't. Also, they have forgotten their noble purpose (the eradication of all monsters) and turned to the coins.

      Not only that, Vesemir in the books is also a bit more playful than in the games. In blood of elves Vesemir jokes and laughes with Triss whilst in the games he is always serious. Even in the witcher 3, it’s hinted at that Vesemir was a ladiesman.

    OK credit where credits' due, i think that both Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and everyone else who worked on this project, deserve our congratulations! As a huge fan of the Witcher games (i have played like almost 1000 hours in all 3 combined) and books, and as someone who, although more or less enjoyed the first season, did not agree with some of the major changes they made (no i dont mean casting choices, but changes like removing the bond Geralt and Ciri made in the Brokilon forest and attributing it to destiny, which is truthfully a bit overused, and changing a lot in the hunt for the golden dragon, which was one of my favourite stories of the whole series), and as not a really big fan of anime, i had very little expectations going into this, especially when i saw in the trailer that they were portraying vesemir as a cocky and arrogant "rebel". But after watching it, i have to admit i really enjoyed it. Yes they still changed a lot about the "canon" lore, with number 1 being the (spoiles ahead) fact that witchers were behind the creation of these new crossbreed monsters in order for them to survive financially, which in turn led to the siege of Kaer Morhen not by an angry mob because of hate and prejudice against the witchers, but mostly by monsters led by an angry sorceress, but i was more or less content with these changes. I mean they did paint witchers to be way more cruel and materialistic than they usually are, but one can say that the witchers we know from the books and games changed in attitude (just as Vesemir did) after that incident and became more symponetic. Although i have to admit that i really did not like one change they made about their training. To me it is incredibly inhumane and it makes absoloutely no sense that they sent the young children into the swamp with no weapons or armor, with vey little training and without first having to go through the Trial of the Grasses and expect them somehow to survive(how?). It doesnt just portray witchers as austere or even barbaric, it makes them look also incredibly stupid, because this way they kill all the possible future witchers that may survive the potion transformation, relying barely on chance that 1 or 2 may make it out (by running apparently?). But one change i absoloutely love is the emphasis they put on Vesemir's childhood and his eventuall trasformation into the father figure we all know and love, which was objectively really good written. Overall, as i said before, i really enjoyed this one and its a solid 8/10 or even 9/10, and i really hope that they keep this up with season 2. Good job guys!
    Just a final note (it is not something that i really care about that much), but can someone explain to me why Geralt is bald, because it is said in the books that the changes he experienced during the Trial of the Grasses caused him to look more pale than normally and have white hair, not lose it. I guess with the trasformation he lost his hair, but later it will grow back white?

    • @jayespin
      @jayespin 3 роки тому

      There's simply no reason why he's bald other than a plot device so the viewer doesn't recognize it's Geralt. I know sometimes we look for an in-universe or lore reason why something happens or is the way it is in a movie/show but sometimes it's really just as simple as the producers wanting to surprise the viewer.

    My review is very similar to the one give to the series: if there were no those books from which all these universe and stories come out, the film would be great. Instead, the key principles of the books are continually contradicted: witchers could never have created monsters, for a multitude of reasons, indeed it is the mages who do so, sometimes. The magic, both of the witchers and the mages, is excessively powerful, both in the film and in the series. Witchers look much more normal than they should be. There is no such thing as Vesemir pretending to "be a better man", witchers are not men, and they have no interest in being good ones. Some monsters in the final battle were excessively large and powerful, in Sapkowski's universe the only thing that can be approached would be dragons, very different. And, also in terms of style, objectively, very ugly monsters, devoid of originality and many of the same color. I liked their choice of showing Kitsune but not their way to do it, she was described precisesly in the book Season of Storms.

      No such thing as Vesemir pretending to "be a better man" ??? What universe are you in?
      By that logic, then Geralt and the other witchers would not have looked to Ves as a father figure whom he had invested his all in - their sword skills, alchemy training, bestiary training, language, reading and writing if he was not out to be a "better man" . By that logic, the witcher boys would not have formed a "family" bond with each other or committed themselves to Ciri's training. Nor would Geralt have crossed the Continent 3 times in search of a young princess to protect her and gained a Hansa of followers to aid him in the process if he was not a good man.
      It is true after the sacking of Kaer Morhen their reputation was tarred and they no longer were viewed as saviors like they once had, and were often called monsters themselves. But to say Witchers were not interested in being good ones means you're dismissing the characters of the Wolf School Witchers. Maybe other schools like The Cat School - was looked down upon by the Wolf School. But the Wolf School witchers not being good or interested in being good is a bit off the mark there, mate. They are not perfect and holy, but not good is certainly not the understanding the books or the games project and I seriously wonder about your comprehension.
      Just because the monsters in the movie were not described by Sapko doesn't mean they couldn't be in the universe. Really. that upset you that much?? a big stretch there IMHO.
      Look, I've read all the books more than once and listened to them on audio and played all the witcher games and read all the comics. I'm pretty well versed in this universe. But I can't stand the purest book reader or game player than can't see beyond logically what was written in the books or shown in the games.

    Although I didn't agree with lots of the changes and choices made in the season 1, I want to keep my fingers crossed for the franchise's next instalments. Not every thing is perfect from the beginning, but if you improve you could achieve something special. I think S1 made also a lot of good things (casting included) and I'm sure we will remember the franchise how it will end (looking at you GoT). Nightmare of the Wolf was really well animated and fun movie. Watching a lot of anime shows you can really appreciate the well budget quality animation here. Good job there Witcher Netflix team! Also dear Lauren keep up the good work and positive attitude you're showing us from the beginning - your enthusiasm toward the franchise is contagious and I really appreciate your open discussion with the fandom. IMO the series couldn't be in a better hands.

    • @jayespin
      @jayespin 3 роки тому

      Imo, it could be in better hands. I wish HBO got a hold of it instead, but what's done is done. I also think I would rather have had Tomek Baginski helm the Witcher series, but Netflix seemingly did not want him to take the reins and gave it to Lauren, who iirc had been wanting to helm a Netflix production for sometime before this. He worked on several polish films and series, the games, and helped get the English translations of the books out faster years ago.
      Tbf, it could've also been in worse hands, and Lauren's attitude has gotten a bit better toward the fandom. In the beginning she used to shut down criticism with "Well other people like it so it's fine". She's more receptive to it now for sure as I've seen through her tweets.

    I love the Witcher IP, but the way y'all portrayed the fall of Kaer Morhen was the worst part of The Nightmare of the Wolf. The premise is that the peasants are furious that the Witchers have created more monsters, so they storm Kaer Morhen . . . alongside monsters? Bigger isn't always better, and The Witcher IP is appealing for being politically grounded. It's a world where there can be a plain old angry mob. In my opinion, all the monsters were over the top. And it made no since that peasants motivated by a fear of monsters would charge in alongside monsters.
