    A note on 'Ivan the Terrible' - in Russia Ivan IV has the epithet 'Гро́зный', meaning 'Great' or 'Formidable'. So why is he called Ivan 'the Terrible' in this video? Because he was evil or useless? No, it is because 'Гро́зный' was first translated into English many years ago as 'Terrible', when the word commonly meant awesome or formidable (see definitions 3 & 4 here: www.dictionary..... And in English, Ivan IV has been known as Ivan the Terrible ever since.

      There seems to be some mistakes in mapping as Lithuanian commonwealth as never had covered the territory of Latvia nowdays. There German Livonia, Polish dependent Herzogtum Kurland, other powers depending on the time you look at but at no point after year 1200 (A.D) have Lithuanians ruled in areas to the North (Latvia). They have had territory stretching to Black sea, but not really Northern part.

    @5:38 Ivan IV was no more _terrible_ than other monarchs in Europe. in fact in Russia he's known as Ivan Grozni, which means Ivan the Formidable or Redoutable, formidable/redoutable opponent. The German writer who _translated_ to Terrible was either an ignorant or an agent of propaganda for the Pope, I thing it was Pope Gregory XIII who could not wait to see Orthodox Russia under his papal authority. Ivan IV has always politely turned down the Pope's _offer._ Ivan IV was the most educated of all the European monarchs of his time. Also his main internal enemies were the Boyards ==> Russian aristocrats.

      @Comrade17 8 років тому +2

      +Felix Magpie Very good and useful graphics, but very politicized version of history. Rus was never called Kievan Rus. Read any ancient document. Rus was called Rus. Kievan Rus is the term historians use to describe the history of Russia, when Kiev was its capital, same as Moscovian Rus when capital was Moscow. Ukraine as country or nation never existed till XX century. Term «Украйна» (Ukrayna) first time appeared in XVII century. Term was created from ancient slavic word «оукраина» and meant borderland.
      Complete lie about Ivan the Terrible (Иван Грозный). «Грозный» better translates from russian as redoubtable and had much more positive meaning, than terrible. Violent paranoia is another lie. Of course, Ivan IV was violent compare to our time, but he was not any more violent than any other European kings of that time. It is still a historical debate about death of Tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich of Russia, son of Ivan IV. But there are no debate that Ivan IV did not killed any of his 7 wives, but for example Henry VIII of England killed 2 of his 6 wives as well as 20 peers, 4 leading public servants, 6 close attendants and friends, 1 cardinal and numerous abbots. During whole time of Ivan IV were killed no more than 5 000 people. For example, in one St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in France were killed 30 000 people.
      Battle on the Ice was not actually at Ice. It was a myth. Proven by archaeology and Livonian Chronicle (defeated soldiers were falling on the grass). Some part of the battle could happened on the coast of a lake and some knight could get killed on a lake after defeat while retreating, but the main battle was not there. Finally, Battle on the Ice could not happen on the ice, because it was April 5, 1242. April is middle of the spring. Of course Ice could still be on a lake, but it would be pretty thin too handle whole battle with knights in full armor.

      +41Dragon I absolutely agree with you that some facts were not presented correctly, but I think it is possible to make a discount to such little issues thus a great work has been done. And talking about Ivan the Terrible, I'm really sick and tired that he is translated like the terrible, it's absolutely not true, and we both know that originally his name has a different meaning. You gave a good example.
      But, I'm a bit worried about the second chapter of the film, as it's going to be extremely controversial 20th century and even more controversial WW2 and the Great Patriotic War. I only hope the creator of this great work will not make mistakes in giving the wrong analysis to different historical events. I really don't want to be dissapointed, because I like the way he presents history.

    • @Comrade17
      @Comrade17 8 років тому

      +Felix Magpie Yeah, I agree that amount of work was great and visual presentation is very good. I just complained about politicized version of the history. It maybe minor, but very important facts. Also, since it was already some mistakes, I too share the doubts that next chapter could be even more away from the truth. But I hope author will take this into account and will do next part much less politicized, without judgmental statements and distortion of facts. Because these graphic representation is well done and that would be to terrible if it would get destroyed by these mistakes.

    Very nice....and remarkably free of historical revisionism. Except as this is a history of Russia, the correct characterization of Ivan IV assuming the title 'Tsar of Russia" would be the *restoration* of the Russian state. The first Russian state in the Russian view was "Kiev Rus" -- which was a loose confederacy of princes, not a centralized state.
    "Kiev Rus" is of course, a historical anachronism just like "Byzantine Empire." To the people at the time, they were simply Rus. Many (or most) princes of Kiev were born in Novgorod.

      @@doriangray7129 Russia named themselves Russia all the time. in 1721 the Russian Kingdom became the Russian Empire, a tsar(czar) is a king, It has the same root as a kaiser. the Novgorod dialect is 50% of Russian language (listen to liguists, the other half is the main language of Rus(sia)). This already was Rus without Novgorod or something else. krivichi, vyatichi, radimichi, sloveni, severiani were (east slavic) tribes of the East Russian lands. Ukraina means borderlands (only that), look еthymological polish dictionaries for example. the Suzdal, Vladimir, Ryazan, Smolensk, Toropets, Chernigov and Novgorod-Seversk principalities and the Novgorod land are (modern) Russia. If you look at the Birch bark manuscripts (the real spoken and written language) you will see that modern Russian is very close to it, so called Ukrainian is only a Russian dialect with Polish amixture. There were invaded lands of Rus or Russia by Poland and Lithuania and the locals rose to fight against them. In Novgorod there were killed a few traitors the few who wanted to sell themselves to the west invaders. Russia originally means Rus' and rusyn initially is a synonym of russian (look at the polish wiki for instance), and there was the ethnonym rusky (russian) in the Ukraine as well. If you look the english articles (about genetics) of research institutes you will see that absolute majority of russians are genеtically the same as ukranians and belorussians. In fact if you look at their old documents and folklore they all are russians. and the minority (very small part of the whole population) have some finno-baltic admixture. Truely Russian historically, lexically and grammatically is much more close to Polish and Czechoslovakian than to any south slavic language (see, let us say, the Swadesh List), There are many turkic words in Ukrainian, "maidan" is one of them. There are no almost any finno-ugric words or something in Russian. really I know only one-two such words, and There are a lot of ugric words in the west Ukrainian dialects because hungarians live there and nearby. And In Ukrainian actually There are enaugh of old bulgarian words as All Rus was baptized and took old church slavonic. And if you remove all polonisms and polish germanisms from Ukranian (I always look in polish, polish ethymological and old polish, slovakian, czech and etс. dictionaries) you will get Russian with small dialectical pronunciation differences. the fact is that even slovakians can't understand czechs well without special practice, and czechs speak with poles in English. And of Course russians don't get bulgarian (and also church slavonic ~ old bulgarian) in most of the cases because of the very different grammar and large difference in vocabulary, And nearly all of the words I understand in bulgarian there are in Ukranian and besides Ukrainian grammar are almost identical to Russian that's why they both are called the East Slavic Language.

      It is not correct. Even the grandfather of Ivan IV - Ivan III was called in the Royal title "sovereign of all Russia."
      The name Rus appeared simultaneously with the creation of a centralized state. The Russian state was formed along the Dnieper river, which was the flow of goods from the Black sea and further from the East to Europe.
      The first capital of Russia was the city of Staraya Ladoga - it was there that Varyag Rurik came after the invitation. Then the capital was moved to Novgorod (to be exact near modern Novgorod there are remains of the old settlement, Rurik Settlement"). Then Rurik United the Slavic tribes downstream of the Dnieper, and his heirs Oleg (Helg) and reached a small fortress Samvatas, which belonged to the Khazar Kaganate and had a Jewish population. Capturing the fortress (and the land around), he appreciated its favorable geographical location and moved the capital to it, now this fortress is known as Kiev.
      Shortly before the Mongol invasion of Russia was crushed into many parts - each of which sat his Prince. As a result, the capital of Bia moved to the city of Vladimir, the capital of the strongest Vladimir-Suzdal Principality, Kiev by that time remained an important cultural city, but lost the status of leader, especially after the internecine war it was captured several times by the princes.
      Near Vladimir was founded a small town - Moscow, which gradually, for a number of reasons, began to grow and develop, and very soon became more and more important than Vladimir. Since then Moscow is the capital of Russia. However, Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg built by him, but after 1917 the capital returned to Moscow.

      @@igroteka90As someone that has studied slavic languages at length I can easily destroy every one of ur arguments. Rus did not have a single Slavic language, it had many close but different Slavic tongues and eventhough both Novgorodian and Kievan Manuscripts were written in old Church Slavonic, linguists can see clear differences between them, as each of these manuscripts had certain amount of live spoken language in them. The language spoken in Southern Rus, that is Chernigov, Perejaslav, Kiev, Vladimir and Galician principialities is direct predecessor to the modern Ukrainian language. Graffitti on the walls of St.Sophia in Kiev prove this, and here are examples. " "Мати не хотячи детичя бжа геть", another one " О горе тобі Андрониче, ох тобі небоже! Чему єсі зло створіл, то не відає нікто же. Толі тє звілі Кузма". These were written on the Walls of St.Sophia in late 11th, early 12th centuries. I have posted the link below.
      So you see, Ukrainian steams back from the times of Rus, just as Belarusian and Russian. Was there Polish influence? Sure there was..But languages of Southern and Central Rus (Ukraine, Belarus) were already fairly close to Polish from the beginning. As for pronounciation, Ukrainian is much closer to Serbo-Croatian then either Polish or Russian. This is due to the fact that Croatians came from Western Ukraine..So everything u claimed is absolute baloney friend.

      basically a dynasty called Romanov comes to power and restore order and continue expanding, they hold power until the revolution (the one that eventually led to the formation of the USSR). In 1721 a person known as Perter the Great came into power. Until Peter the great came along Russia was a relatively backward country, Peter liked western European clothing and culture and eventually integrated aspects of western European nations into Russia, he even made a beard tax because before having a beard was normal/expected of people in Russia. Peter then started a war with sweeden (who then had most the baltic lands) he gained land and build a city on the newly conquered land, this city became known as st petersburg and was a more western style city and was made the new capital of russian. Peter essentially brought russia from being a backward eastern land that no one in western europe payed much attention to, into a superpower. All this time until 1861 russia still had a fuedal society where there where boyars (lords) and serfs, the serfs where essentially the property of their masters and where tied to their land. In the 1800s the discontent with this was higher than ever esspecialy after Russian soldiers (who where conscripted serfs) saw the relative freedom in western Europe while in the Napoleonic wars. In 1861 serdom was abolished but the former serfs still had a bad time as they did not really have anywhere to go. During the industrial revelution these former serfs started becoming factory workers and conditions and pay these factories was terrible even compared to other countries. This eventualy led to the febuary revelution in 1917 which resulted in the revocation of power from tsar nicholas II. Russia became more similar to a republic. This new government did not want to stop the war (WW1) with germany which was going terribly for Russia resulting in many deaths and starvation. The Germans eventually funded a person called Vladimir Lenin to go to russia to start a new revelution to stop the war. Due to the war exaustion the people supported it and the October revelution happend (1917) this is the one that formed the USSR (union of soviet socialist republics). Lennin killed many who opposed him (mostly nobilty and other wealthy people) including the russian royal family. Lennin died shortly after (1924) and was succeded by Stalin aginst Lennins will. Stalin had a plan for rapid indusrilisation (5 year plan) this involved using forced labour (gulags) and also resulted in famines and many deaths. Stalins rule was cruel but without the rapid industrilisation germany would have walked over them in WW2, it was all the tanks and weapons made from this that won the war eventualy. After stalin the age of gulags and holodomor (a man made famine) was over and it became more similar to other countries. People often think that life in the soviet union was terrible but they though the soviets though the same about the US, its all propoganda. Post stalin USSR was very different to the USSR before. Public services like schools where very good, food was made to a good quality but the whole system collapsed due to corruption and bankruptcy and the USSR collapsed in 1991. From there its has been the russia we know today. Sorry if this is a little long but i missed out alot of details. Also sorry for spelling mistakes.

      No, Kievan Rus was different from Moscow, Moscow in the 12th century as part of the Golden Horde was created to rule the principalities!

      In the 14th century the Principality of Moscow until the 15th century was still under the control of the "Crimean khanate" and then in the Kiev Principality was created by "Cossack army" tradition" of the Golden Horde Nogai Code-cumaná", then in the 15th century began the dawn of Muscovy as an independent state from the" Crimean khanate", and in the 16th century Russian people was formed as the titular people of Moscow, and then in the 18th century was established
      The Russian Empire!
      Russian Russians were serfs until the 19th century, and when the Russians killed the Germanized "Romanov" dynasty, they began to rewrite their history as the "Battle of Kulikovo", but, the "Battle of Kulikovo" in the 14th century was a war between the "Nogai Mamai " and the" Genghisids " of the Golden Horde for power!!

    I think split between people living in modern russia and modern ukraine happened after tatar invasion. Kiev for 1 centrury was devastated by tatars and was released from the yoke in 14 century and Moscow actually joined the yoke for 3 centuries and tried to leverage from its union with the yoke to conquest the west (and Kiev). But faced Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth (and population of ukraine represented 40-60% of commonwealth population), which actually stopped for 4-5 centuries Moscow's attempts to conquest west. But the history of same people living in two different worlds (in commonwealt and in the yoke) changed the mentality of one great slavic tribe. And today the mentalities of russians and ukrainians are opposite.

      Chronicle isn't a reliable source of information, unless there is a way to prove it via expertise or other type of research. The analysis (1963) showed, that son's body contained a critical amount of toxic metals, so he might have died because of poisoning. Maybe the expertise was false, or the poisoning wasn't the cause of death, but that's the reason I called the whole situation questionable.
