    CK's process of writing jokes is what makes him stand out. I always wondered why he sounds more natural and unscripted when he tells jokes on stage and now I know. It's one of the main reasons why I like his stand up.

    • @julicoole
      @julicoole Рік тому +18

      Yep, Bill Burr is the only other huge comic I know of who claims to have the same writing method. He says, and I'm paraphrasing of course, 'If something funny happened to me and I went to the bar to tell my friends, would I write the story out beforehand?'
      The reason more comics don't write like that is because it's extremely tough without a script, you have to be genuinely willing to bomb. Not just, oh I'm bombing let me pick a joke that works to save the set. But actually being there, sitting in the bomb and thinking your way out of it.

    • @SuperKINGXON
      @SuperKINGXON Рік тому +1

      @@julicoole Exactly! Bill Burr is another favorite of mine who also showcases that ability to tell jokes naturally quite well. Improvising his way out of a joke that isn't necessary landing with the audience is definitely his forte. I personally enjoy that. That's the true art of stand up in my opinion. Otherwise, if it is completely scripted, then might as well watch a sitcom instead.

    • @halycon404
      @halycon404 Рік тому +2

      @@julicoole Part of it is also Carlin. He wrote these intricate wordplays where he was playing with language. So much of his shows were about language. There's no way to come up with that in the moment. Before Carlin on really old black and white standup recordings of comedy clubs they'd walk up on stage with a small notebook piece of paper with a list of bullet points. They did it like CK did, back then there was no green room. They got up out of the crowd and did their bit, so small piece of paper to get them in the headspace and remind them of their bits. Then Carlin happened, big dense self referential pieces of dialog rattled off at a speed that made it seem he was desperate to get it out as fast as he could. He was a monster in the art of writing comedy and memorizing long stretches of ultra dense monologue. He warped the perception of what standup could and should be.

      Joe's older stand up stuff (from like 20-25 years ago) is way better than the stuff he's put out since he started the podcast. His old stuff was pretty edgy but the newer stuff like his Netflix specials are just kind of surface level observational humor without much of any edge.

    I'm working up to try stand-up at some local open-mic nights. I think Louis is one of the greatest and when you hear his work-discipline, you understand why. 😯
    What I'm asking is: for you're first sets do you think it's better to have all the jokes completely written out or do you think it's better to do as Louis says and just have the concept finished in your head so it feels less static and rehearsed. I've Dj:ed at quite a high level as a mash-up Dj and noticed when I had the whole night more or less completely planned that it felt static.

      i think the key is to do it. like every night. these great comedians (and even the bad ones (even though we still know their names)) try to get on stage as often as possible. as many times a night they can. then its all about just finding what works for you. lots of people write (normand, chris rock) and are funny, lots of people dont (louis etc) and are funny. the common denominator is they all go up on stage a ton.

    LCK is a genius. He might not look like a genius, he might not act like a genius, but he’s a genius. He got too loose with his sexuality and they murdered him for it. But he’s back and he’s still the lucid mind we all remember. I hate that it took some years off him, he clearly looks like a person who has been through the wringer, but what are you going to do? He was culturally in the wrong place at the wrong time. I wonder if any of those women look back and think “yeah, I kind of lost my shit and fed into the whole me-too thing when I should have just said “no man, I’m not into that, keep it in your pants”…

      Because he is doing mostly very basic material in front of his fans, but thanks to his podcast, he is around masters of the craft and acts like he is one of them, and the "process of writing killer material" etc. - it seems a bit undeserved and pretentious. I remember dozens of Luis CK or Bill bits, but i can't remember a single joke from Rogan, i only remember that it was a lot about dicks, pussies and jizz? But hey, several arena comedians do "basic" stuff, not every audience appreciates "clever" comedy and it's easier (not easy) to appeal to the mainstream with simple stuff. But making stuff like child m*lestation funny for a mainstream audience is a completely different level of art.

    • @stillvenom
