The show was trying to give an example of a magazine at the time. The idea is that the magazine hadn't any places that it could think of where this is truly the case. The show didn't make fun of where you live they instead used it as an example of what the magazine would have said in real life.

I am a women and stopped shaving (everywhere) 2 years ago. It was honestly one of the best decisions I have made. I get way less health problems (no more hurtful grown in hair, no more lymph nodes in the armpits & no more infections like yeast infections). Furthermore I save a ton of time & my hairy legs prevent being picked on by stupid superficial guys. My husband stopped shaving as well. As we both noticed sex becomes better with hair. The hair additionally stimulates & pheromones are better contained in hair.
I personally have blonde hair, which means nearly nobody even notices my leg hair. Sometimes my armpits get seen and sometimes comments are made that are intended to hurt me. However, the comments don't hurt me anymore, they just help me with seeing the nature of my opponent. Humans that want you to look or be a certain way are not real friends. They want to change who you are. I never thought about shaving as a girl it was just something you had to do. When I came into my twenties I started to question it but found hair not aesthetic. Nowadays, I even find hair more beautiful than without. As I am bisexual I can only encourage women to stop shaving. I don't find it attractive anymore if women look like girls with breasts. Grown up humans have hair. Men and women. I also think it looks ridiculous if a man only shaves his intimate area, hairy belly & legs but a hairless triangle in the middle of it.
For all of you who like the feeling of shaving, please do continue. If it feels good for you it is the right thing for you but please stop commenting, shaming and trying to change people like me.

As someone who actually is from a Muslim family and lives in a Muslim majority country, I guarantee that most Muslim women don't shave often unless they're outrageously hairy. For the typical woman, it's once every 1-3 months. It's cause of social media or because of insecurity caused by competition amongst young girls, that women are starting to shave more often. Has absolutely nothing to do with tradition or religion, just how the standard globally has really affected most people.

    YES! THANK YOU!
How ridiculous to make women think that body hair is unfeminine, when God and Nature grow it on every woman!
Shaving body hair for men or women should be a choice, not a social necessity.
Now, I never thought that women shaving was merely a fashion industry moneymaker, though your video, Adam, is an eyeopener about our ever-consumerist society.
However, think: what kind of female human being doesn't have body hair? Answer: a child, a prepubescent girl. I have thought, and still think, that society's ideal of the hairless woman was an expression of the immature adult male's inability to deal with a fully-grown real woman. He wants a little girl: someone who can't think for herself, who has no autonomy or agency, who is dependent upon him physically, mentally, socially, spiritually, and financially. The hairlessness of a woman symbolizes a rejection of her full adulthood, and asserts the immature man's desire to have a woman with the body of a woman (minus the hair) and the mind and soul of a little girl.
After all, they don't universally shame men out of having beards. Beardlessness is only ideal in some circles. Also, bodily hair on a human male is welcomed as a sign of adulthood and manliness. However, American society, from what I can tell, insists that all its women remain hairless except for their scalps and their vaginas--and even that latter one is being taken away. Society doesn't accept naturally-occurring pubescent body hair as feminine. Why?

You didn’t mention that before the 20s, women’s body hair was covered by clothing, including stockings that were thick enough to cover leg hair. The advent of women shaving happened in part because new styles, like sheer silk stockings, exposed body hair that was previously unseen. Additionally, lots of other cultures thought women should remove body hair to look beautiful, like ancient Rome

    • @asterismos5451
      @asterismos5451 4 роки тому +7

Stockings wouldn't have shown leg hair (nylons, maybe, but even with my dark-ish thick leg hair you can't see any). And loads of fashions in Europe in the previous few centuries showed armpit hair just as much as modern clothes do. But it's also the fact that women are conditioned to believe that they are only sexually desirable if they are hairless and so they need to shave for their partner's behalf. Previously, the only people who shaved for sex reasons were people who had pubic lice, so it was really unsexy historically to not have pubic hair because STIs. It's not all about the hair that the public could see. (Though 70s porn culture was really what pushed the popular expectation for women to not have pubic hair, but that definitely built on the expectation that they were already shaving elsewhere.)

I'm going to have to buy a strop, magnesium compound, a teek bowl for my soap, and finest badger hair brush I can afford." Obviously there was no other way that could turn out.

I mean they might have but I think you're out right lying. Adding on to that, do your friends just show their body hair willy nilly. That seems way too sketchy. Yeah, some guys do judge girls by their looks but that is just absurd. I think there is another ploy here because if guys complained about your friends' body hair then I have no doubt women judged them about it. Women judge other women by their looks way more than men do. Secondly, yeah I can see that. You might be lying again but I can see that happening. Lastly, really? Razors are literally between $5-$25 and I'm pretty sure they go for less. Also, stop saying about the 10% of the people have enough to afford it. People who has a decent enough of money to spare can buy a razor if they want to. Pretty much the only who can't afford it are homeless or just can't spare the money. Rich people have many amenities but a razor is something that most people can afford. Look, if these things acutally happened to you and your friends then I'm sorry but your story is sketchy and doesn't really make sense and it seems to target men and the rich. Just try to be specific next time.

I also pointed out that girls would judge her friends too because women judge other women way more than men do. Shaving companies is a small portion of the problem, it's people judging women/men for not shaving. Shaving companies can be....maticulous at times but I'm saying that the media and people judging other people by how they have body hair are the big ones we worry about. Half of the human population lives off of less than $2.50 USD/day so a cheap razer is the last of anyone's concern. The people who have a little more can't have a lot more, especially as the 1% get richer. My point is that this is a little superfluous, and a bit on the side of luxury, except it's not a luxurious experience for everyone, and acceptance within a community for genetics on how much hair you have is a sad thing. I know of families that didn't buy razors so everyone just had unibrows and mustaches until they got jobs in middle school or high school and might've decided to spend their little bit of cash on shaving instead of saving for winter clothing that their family couldn't afford for them.

I am not talking about that, i'm talking how cheap razors are and how Aella's seems a little sketchy. Waxing is an expensize thing to do but THAT'S NOT THE POINT! If women stopped shaving, stopped using makeup, wore short plain brown hair, wore baggy clothing, and just smelled like soap, but were still sexually approachable, at least 75% of men would be fine with that.
Your beauty regiment isn't for our benefit. You don't do all this to "get a man." You do it to compete with each other, for the attention of the highest status man in your social circle. And that's okay. Just don't tell yourself that you *have* to do it. You don't.

But if women could utilize a hive mind for a brief moment, I believe you would see that if all of you stopped doing it, that would benefit the majority of you, if not most of you. But because maintaining a beauty regiment is more likely to benefit each person on an inndividual basis, hardly anyone will stop. O.k, but to be fair:
    1) Hairless bodies were an aesthetic ideal long before we started shaving. Look at classical paintings, which always depicted smooth skin on both men and women, centuries before disposable razors were invented.
    2) It's in the 1920's that women started to wear shorter skirts, thus exposing their legs for the first time in history. There was little reason to shave before that.
    3) People did, in fact, try to remove their body hair for a long time! It was reported in Antiquity: Egyptians shaved their entire bodies, to symbolically distinguish themselves from animals; hair was considered "beastly". There was even a fad in the Middle-Age amongst men to be smooth, after knights discovered some Oriental techniques during the crusades.
I think a lot of people wanted hairless bodies long before it was technologically cheap and convenient to achieve this result. For comparison, Venetian women during the Renaissance tried to get blond hair by using lemon juice and sun exposure; but now, the process of hair bleaching is perfected and easier through our discovery of hydrogen peroxide. Similarly, consider the fact that people may have wanted straight teeth or straight noses for centuries, but they did not have access to orthodontics or plastic surgery.
Heck, despite the bleeding and the inconvenience, men have been shaving their beards for thousands of years! If you don't like running a blade on your own legs, try letting another person put a blade on your *face* and *throat* !

It seems ironic that now I get told to shave and my mum says I should cover up if I don’t shave because it’s “disgusting” to have hair
Whereas a century ago no one would’ve cared
I personally just think shave if you want or leave it

I’ve actually done some research on this topic (I like historical costuming). At the turn of the century, women’s evening wear started showing the armpit regularly. This is when shaving your armpits started to become the norm. Shaving your legs came a little later in the 1920s, when hemlines shortened. By the 1950s, it was almost universal.

This is false. Women started shaving because they wore nylons to give a hairless appearance prior to shaving. The first great war (world war 1) caused a nylon shortage. Women started shaving because they could no longer have a hairless look with stockings. Gilette didn't create the concept for marketing, he just happened to be in the right place at the right time with his invention

Adam Ruins Everything by making this an issue about sexism against women when men experienced these 'Clean shaven or you're not attractive' ads long before women, but he doesn't include the men part because it ruins his SJW narrative.

When I met my ex 25 years ago, she was at college and her parents were fussing at her about shaving. My only comment was that I'm not going to shave my armpits or legs for you, so it works both ways. If she wore clothes that revealed enough she "needed" to shave for social pressure, she did. Otherwise, seeing where she wasn't shaving meant the evening was going VERY well. :)

You don’t need to shave. I know that some women like to and that’s okay, but you should never feel ashamed of your own body. You were created beautiful. When you are dead and in the grave, people will not be thinking of if you shaved or not, they will be thinking about the person you were. I’m just saying this because I saw some mean comments and I’m imagining young girls or something seeing all this and feeling gross. Be confident in yourself no matter what anyone says to you.

I've somewhat stopped shaving my legs. I didn't think too much about it before, but I did want my legs to be shaven when they would be visible. I was absolutely anxious about going out with unshaven legs at first (hello social anxiety), but not so much anymore. Because who cares really? It isn't even super noticable on me, so why bother if I don't feel like it? I shave my legs maybe 5 times a year, and between like september to june I'll just let 'em get fuzzy. Sorry, mr Gillette.

Mmm, interesting, but what was the influence of evolving dressing standards? I mean, my (probably very bad) image of those times is that it used to be not done for women to show their naked legs. So it might be that the rise in shaving conincides with clothing standards becoming less strict... Or is that just me?

Well, middle Eastern women been hairless for centuries. Even during ancient Egypt women and men used to remove hair for style and hygiene. So perhaps western women just caught up with us only 100years ago

    • @SS-Connect
      @SS-Connect 4 роки тому +8

I doubt they were "hairless". Waxing, sugaring, and threading were practiced but more so in upper classes and castes that could afford to commit the time to doing it on a regular basis. Remember that all Middle Eastern and Indian cultures were conservative, so women were more covered up. Even at present they're still required to cover most of their legs and arms and sometimes even their face. Poorer women and middle class women did not have the time to keep up those appearances on an ongoing basis if they were tending to children, parents, in-laws, husbands, as well as to the home and to the land. If they were one of many wives, they had less contact with their husbands on a weekly basis. Hair removal was pretty limited to the faces of most of those women. Only upper class women would have had the time and labor to do their whole bodies and groin area.
Nowadays, ALL women are expected to remove their hair everywhere (legs, underarms, groin, AND face). Which is ridiculous and impractical to keep up with on an ongoing basis when women are working full time jobs or more than 1 job now.
