  • This is a special one. I helped one of my viewers, Peter, tidy up. He's got an awesome mancave and what doesn't fit in there, went with me. Here's part one, which shows the pickup, and the first tests.

Well don't ask me how you did it, but there's already more cassette decks! The receivers/amps were also interesting.

Yoo brother, I was looking to get better audio for a TV in a living room, what do you think the best way would be? I have around a 125GBP for the budget and I was thinking of getting a used sub 40GBP A/V receiver and a some nice passive monitors. Wish. What would you do with that money instead?

Definitely not an AV receiver. Just get a simple stereo amplifier or receiver. Maybe some 90's NAD, they usually sound great. Or a Pioneer A203 or anything that looks like it. You also can't really go wrong with late 80's to early 90's JVC. Usually sounds remarkably okay for what it is.
Speakers, you're in the UK; get yourself a pair of Wharfedale Diamond III. They are absolute gems and they don't break the bank. Tannoy M2 is a good option, IMF Compact II, Mission 760i, Boston Acoustics A25. With a bit of luck you can get that, with the amplifier, for 125 quid. Go for 50 for the amp, 75 for the speakers. Just get any 2.5mm2 ofc (meaning; just copper) speaker cable and you're good. Also don't forget, placement is free. Make sure you position your speakers well.

@@rollingtroll WOW, Thanks a lot for the great advice. However much I want some vintage and retro setup. Unfortunately It's not only for me. So convenience is a bit important, specially the people going to use it. Eventually I did find a Sony STR-DH500 A/V receiver for only 40, and a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 3 III for around 80. Lucky me!, but I was wondering is this going to be better than active edifier or presonus eris 3.5. Or even passive, and should I keep trying to look for speaker amps instead of the Sony A/V receiver?

@@samir2zk135 Skip the Sony please. It doesn't sound good, at all. Virtually no modern Sony amps do (and again; please don't get A/V receiver, why would you want that? :)).
No specific need to go for active speakers, but if you want to save a buck; The Edifier R1700BT is stupidly good for the money. Found second hand for 60-70gbp if you're a little patient. Yes, the wharfedales are better but of course the edifiers have bluetooth (which is kinda cool) and two line level inputs, so you can also hook them up to a second source. They are pretty versatile.

@@rollingtroll OMG, Yis SIR!, I will keep in mind to skip A/V receivers than. Their measurements and specs at the price point aren't that appealing anyways. Thanks for the Advice! so I was told that surround sound or sub woofers would be nice (ofc I always prefer clean stereo) so I was thinking if I could get away with getting speaker amps that can do it. for future proofing what do you think?

@@samir2zk135 It's mostly that their power supply has a lot more work to do than is necessary. All you need is stereo, right? And if you don't need a radio tuner, you can even skip the entire receiver bit. Less is more.
Careful with the vintage stuff as well. As lovely as it is, it needs full overhauls after 40, 50 years. And even if you bought it overhauled, you never know if it was done right. There's a reason I'm not using vintage gear myself :D.
If you want surround sound you need five speakers, at least :)
