  • This is a special one. I helped one of my viewers, Peter, tidy up. He's got an awesome mancave and what doesn't fit in there, went with me. Here's part one, which shows the pickup, and the first tests.

What are speakers in the back? I've been trying to figure it out, super cool video as usual!

There's four of 'em! The lower ones are the Ion Deskrocker (remarkably good cheap things), the ones that are hanging up high are the Sansui Micro 820v (ua-cam.com/video/o36-tj2yoNY/v-deo.htmlsi=BUZu0W0dRp0vi2xA)

What's your opinion on Technics gear? I have two cassette decks and one receiver by them, all from the period of 1984-87 and not only were they cheap but they all work flawlessly. Build quality is ok although one cassette deck is very basic and lightweight but works absolutely fine. I am thinking they knew how to build units to last back in that period. I understand their 90s gear used lead free solder and hence they aren't very reliable.
Never been a fan of Technics, just didn't like them, my dad had 2 of their mini stereo component systems in the 90s and just didn't rate them at all.
I am impressed though that both cassette decks just work and the receiver had no scratchy sliders or buttons and all worked fine with no issues.

Just average. It’s perfectly okay but doesn’t stand out in any way. Their sl18/19/20/22 series of record players is pretty good for players no one pays attention to. I don’t think they deserve their name in record players otherwise though. Most of them sound dead as a dodo and clearly worse than the competition (jvc, pioneer, sansui). The sl1700/1800 are a reasonable choice. Much better than the 1200 II and cheaper. The SP10 is also pretty good.
I can’t think of anything by Technics I really want to have apart from the rs1500 and rs1700 reel to reels. Those are truly outstanding.

@@rollingtroll maybe I should sell the lot and get a modern Chinese D class amp. I don't know myself sometimes

@@AlexMitchell-sj4sb Why not just get a good class a/b hifi amp? there's so many good cheap amps out there. Varying from 30, 40 euros (the Pioneer A-223) to a little more (NAD C320, or some nice cambridge or arcam) to something more upmarket (Luxman L-309V, Accuphase E206, maybe an Audio Analogue Donizetti/Bellini combo). I don't see why you'd want a class D chipamp with how much great affordable stuff there's out there :D.

@rollingtroll good point yes, was just thinking about the space or lack of in my tiny house. I know Netherlands houses can be tiny too but this one I live is definitely similar.
Some good suggestions there, I will check them out. Maybe sell the Technics and Hitachi receiver I have.
I have flu at the moment so that might explain why I am getting fed up with all the vintage gear sat around.

Or get rid of your 3 receivers.

That's an incredible collection! I don't feel so bad about the 1 amp, 3 receivers and 2 pairs of speakers I have.

None of this is staying, obviously. I got a studio, and I got a living room audiophile setup. Other than that I got one rack of audio that i'm keeping in my attic and that's it. The rest is for playing around and passing on (and obviously making sure Peter gets paid :D).

@@AlexMitchell-sj4sb still planning to do that actually, but I don’t want to be braggy so I am still figuring out how to “theme” that video

    • @AlexMitchell-sj4sb

@rollingtroll it's not braggy, just what you have. Be interesting to see.
By the way, what were the JPW speakers you got in this haul? I have the ML510s and I am very happy with them.
I am the sort of person who buys and keeps most of the gear you test, hence why I am interested in watching to get some ideas. I am definitely not an audiophile, I can't afford to be. Just budget budget gear for me but I get a decent and pleasing sound.

@@AlexMitchell-sj4sb they are ml510 yes. They already found a new home with a friends friends daughter. Together with a nice Yamaha receiver and a Sanyo record player 😁.
As for the bragging; I am not rich so I shouldn’t have an audio rig like this. But it’s all about having nice friends to advice me and sometimes offer me stuff for an absolute steal, and knowing when to buy. But yes, I will make that video one day 😁
