  • A Tutorial on how to make a Flashing/Blinking LED circuit using 555 Timer IC on a breadboard. This circuit flashes LED lights at regular intervals of time and the flashing rate can be adjusted by using a potentiometer. Detailed explanation of how this circuit works is also included in the video.
    Additionally, this circuit can be made to flash 2 LED's one after the other, and can also be used to flash LED strips / Lights that operate on AC power by using a relay module.
    Link to the circuit diagram: elonics.org/ad...
    Below is the list of components required for building this LED Flasher Circuit:
    * 555 IC
    * LED / any output device
    * Capacitor - 10uF
    * Resistors - 100K, 1K, 220R
    * Breadboard
    * Breadboard Connectors
    * Power Supply (5-12)V
    * Potentiometer (Optional)
    * Relay Module (Optional)
    Refer to the resistor table shown in the video tutorial for determining exact value of LED's series resistor (220R)
    This tutorial is a part of 18 video series on 555 IC Projects: • 555 Timer Projects on ...

    The circuit diagram shown in the video is for demonstration purpose only. This is the schematic with correct resistor and capacitor values: elonics.org/sites/default/files/inline-images/flashing-blinking-led-circuit-using-555-timer-schematic.png

    This is brilliant. Thank you so much. I've been watching videos showing how to use a 555 to flash an LED but this is first one that really explains how the timing relates to the capacitor/resistor. The animation is superbly clear. Bravo.

    So cool!! Does this method decrease the over all current power consumption considerably (versus having the LED light stay on)? Or does it (the capacitors and resistors) use the same or similar amount of power overall? I’m researching ways to make an LED circuit that blinks once every 30 seconds to spike the current to about .050 mA, that uses as little current draw as possible when the light is off. Thank you for explaining how your circuit works, too. I really appreciate the animated schematic!

Advise appreciated. I want to have this circuit turn on one vibrator, then turn it off as it turns on the other one - just like you are doing with the LED lights. Thanks!

    In your dual alternating led flasher circuit diagram that links to here (elonics.org/adjustable-led-flasher-using-555-timer), LED 2 is backwards. the part merely needs to be reversed, or else it won't light.

    I cannot figure out the potentiometer. Everything works great, disconnect resistor, add pot and both lights just stay on and dim when pot is turned. I've tried every variation, pot size matter or what? Thanks for the awesome tutorial though! This was fun.
    Edit: Finally!! It needed a 500k, other ones were technically flashing, just so fast due to lower pot value you couldn't tell.
