56:43 - Hi, Tango's thumbnail person here XD
What all you hermits need to do is 👏learn 👏to 👏 ask 👏for 👏 help 👏! Tango is very, VERY, independent. I still to this day wonder how I managed to eek a little slice away from him to let him focus on other things. And my little slice, the logos themselves are done by Lomaxmom because she's a genius on them.
I think it's so sweet that so many people *here* are saying the thumbnails do not matter. They do. I just did a spreadsheet (Which Skizz's numbers completely broke until I had to outlier him) comparing secondary channels. Tango is up 70% from last year, and the average for UA-cam is 4%. (Imp's was up 47%, Skizz's 172%, average for the hermits second channel growth was 65%) The thumbnails target people who are not regulars, who only dip their toes in, and who wont comment on a video 99% of the time. Thumbnails are bait. They go, "Here viewer, viewer, viewer!" and the content is the hook. (And I've noticed that most of the hermits are doing the same formula for thumbs. And while it's simple and classy, its not making anyone stand out. I could have a for you page full of hermits, but on thumbs alone, could not recognize one.)
Simple rule for my thumbs; Hats always win. Very expression is next. I try to catch the vibe or a really funny scene, but who you put in the thumbnails does help. When Imp asked Skizz if he got better views with Scar in the thumb? Yeah, I've noticed it, too. I call it the "Etho Effect" XD.
For the seasons, I like to color code Tango's channel. It's easy to know "Orange = Plate Up!", and just scan for orange. Red was Season 9. This season I gave Tango a few options for colors and styles, and he picked the bright neon which I think has helped a ton.
TL;DR Really; let your friends help. We also have skills you can use XD (Right, Mosel?)
(Also, I'm in the DERP Mod channel if you two have any questions or want to see the spreadsheets 💚)

As a fellow person who helps Hermits whenever he can, I second this. I know almost all of the Hermits have had to learn through necessity how to do literally everything themselves. Many UA-camrs have gone through this transition of realizing there's only so many hours in a day, and how much better would it be if they could focus on doing what it is they love to do, and delegate the rest to people who's passion is the thing you're delegating to them!
I don't have fancy datasheets to back up this claim, so obviously take this with a grain of salt... however, while delegation can be expensive up front, it's well within the scope of reason to assume you'd at least break even, due to having more time to create content.
But I get it. Having attempted the UA-cam game myself, I know that I would be reluctant to let go of some creative control over things... I'd also be fearful that people might judge me, as if I'm breaking the "whole point of UA-cam"... if the whole point of UA-cam is to overwhelm and break creative people through burn out... then maybe we need to rethink what we believe UA-cam even is.

The beach analogy is good, but I think there's a horse analogy that fits even better. Some people are draft horses ("work horses") and others are race horses. Draft horses put their heads down and do the work for as long as the work needs doing, never stopping. Race horses run hot and fast and then take time off to recuperate before racing again. Neither is designed to do the other's work, and if they tried, they'd ruin their health. Both types are important in the world. Impulse is a draft horse; Skizz is a race horse. I'm a draft horse, and as Imp says, it's important to set time limits, or we'd work all day and night. For Skizz, it's important to have more freedom to run, but then he needs to care for himself with a break before doing it again. If you try to fight the way your mind and body works, it doesn't go well, so recognizing your style and working with it will keep you healthier and happier.

    • @doctor_owl
      @doctor_owl 2 місяці тому

Thank you for this analogy! I'm definitely a race horse, I get things done in short bursts as I get tired or bored if I try to slog onward for too long. I think it's important for people to do the self analysis about this stuff, it can really help with your perspective and planning how to deal with work.

It's good to hear Skizz again, there's a void on HC (not Xisuma!!) since he's been gone.
I think thumbnails are only for the people who aren't subscribed. If I see one of you (or other Hermits I'm subbed to) I will watch it and barely take any notice of the thumbnail or title. Some thumbnails do stick out but usually for a bad reason. I mentioned it a few times to impulse and he changed his thumbnail style, he actually took my advise and I feel honoured.

This podcast applies to all small business owners. I've run my business since 2012, and it's crazy how many hats you have to wear. Mine is vintage collectibles, so I have to do inventory, customer service, packing and shipping, supplies ordering, marketing, event management and promotion, building maintenance, bookkeeping... I haven't taken a full day off since 2015, let alone vacations. When your hobby becomes your business, either you love it and dive in, or you burn out and begin to hate your hobby. Luckily, I'm the former. The best thing I ever did was to hire a CPA to do the taxes!

It's okay for you to change things in your videos, editing, and recording so you can find something you're comfortable with. Don't stress yourself. We'll be patient until you can find your legs, and we will be supportive through every minute of it. We'll give you the feedback you need, and we will love your content because you're being YOU, and that's what we like.
Also, I'm very sorry that you have so much anxiety, especially about letting people down. I don't think you are, and I doubt your friends do either.

I don’t care about thumbnails at all, personally. I follow who I like to watch and just watch them when their videos come up. But I might be unusual. I generally like secondary channels for the more relaxed vibes. I also dislike a relenting stream of talking spliced too tightly together, and usually second day channels don’t have that as much. In general, just like what you two are doing. And love all the hermits! 🫶🏻

1:02:00 ish where you are talking about these small tasks that you think "whyhaven't I done it" my manager gave me the most solid advice about these, because I was always guilty of coming to catch ups and saying "oh I just need to do this won't take long", and not getting it done by the next one. One small Acronym. J(F)DI. Just (F***ing) Do it. Things like firing off an email, or changing a setting, or anything like that. It's something small that isn't going to interrupt your work flow, just do it while you're thinking on it. Because you're going to spend more time coming back to it and thinking about it, and talking about the fact you haven't done it, to the point it would have been quicker to just do it. Pop that acronym or saying somewhere near your computer and notice it every time you delay something that could be done.
It's small and it was just the kick I needed. Now, if I realise I need to send an email, i just go do it. Or I need to put in a request, I go do it.

The way I approach work is similar to Skizz thanks to ADHD. There are days when I'm hyperfocused, it feels like nothing but the project I'm working on matters, and I'm hesitant to pull myself away unless I absolutely need to because I know tomorrow I could be too spacey to be productive no matter how hard I try. I've found some balance by getting all my manual chores done on spaced out days: it doesn't take any brain power to clean the bathroom, and by doing it on a spacey day I can invest more time into my projects on focused days. So I think there's a way to make the imbalance work, but you need to think about what you can be doing on 'off' days to set yourself up for success on 'productive' days.

hearing all the stories from your guys lives has helped me so much, learning from mistakes and experiences I think is a big part of life but to learn from others mistakes and experiences is an even better quality to have and just hearing from you guys that even as (old) as you are you guys are still learning every day how to be better and that has been a big eye opener to me on my view of messing up and that i’m gonna improve every day even in my later years I can make mistakes and i’m gonna continue to learn and grow as a person and although you guys haven’t directly said this it’s somehting i’ve learned from listening to you guys so thank you for all your help and great advice, I love your podcast and your hermitcraft episodes, keep up the great work! :D

When Skizz talks about scrapping work that's basically done: I felt that to my core. I can't even begin to count how many times I've done that.
I don't know if it's the same, but I think for me a big reason is because I get tired of analyzing a video of myself, trying to pick out the "best parts" and figure out how to put them together.
But then I've started playing a game with two of my favourite people recently; and while I'm slow to make progress, I don't find myself getting tired of it when I have to pull it up again to edit more. I think there's something just inherently more enjoyable about capturing "human moments", and those come so much more frequently and naturally when you're with the people you love.

Maybe you’ve done this before but I’d find a time-lapse of your content creation day would be very interesting to watch. Been a casual player for years and always wonder how long your projects take as well as all the editing time you spend. I know it would require another camera/pc/vid setup - but just like a second MC account to capture your big build time lapses….be cool to get the “fly on the wall” perspective from a day (or few) from your studio….

  • @donoraffe

@skizz, newer creator here so take this as you will. when you commented on uploading your emote taking 5 seconds, but you already started streaming so it’s “too late”
Might I suggest, just do it! People come to watch you, and hang out with you. A streamer I watch fairly religiously (shoutout to Luxthos). I lurked in his channel when he was literally setting up merch and including us in some of the “what it’s like to do content for a living”
I don’t think it’s unprofessional or bad necessarily to simply fix stuff on the fly on stream when you remember to do it. I mean I wouldn’t suggest trying to swap out something technical that could end badly of course, but something as simple as uploading and emote to twitch and giving massive props to your artist can be a really cool interaction with your followers.
PS as I also work full time and sometimes have long jaunts between clips, I’m totally taking a mental note of rewatching the previous clip for continuity of the recording! Gonna be a lifesaver I think for when I get around to edit!
Thank you two for doing this and giving us a chance to peek behind the curtain of what you all do and the simple little life lessons we also pick up along the way!
And I will say that your what’s stopping you episode is really what pushed me outside my comfort zone to just start on this platform, and I have to say I’m loving it! Even the videos that take a week to get like no views, I’m having a blast enjoying the process.

Question: what is it like coordinating with sponsors? Is it all email? Phone calls? Do they just DM you? How does that work? And how do you decide which sponsors are ones you want to work with vs passing on?

when you guys first started talking about the replay buffer, my initial reaction was: the numbers you guys are talking about seem waaay too low. Keeping 15 minutes of context isn't going to hurt anything, and is exactly as easy to edit out.
Also: for longer videos, I'm certain you can set up a hotkey to place a marker in the video. I don't know if your recording software supports it, but something like: press a button to bring up one frame of "remember this moment", then get your editing software to find those frames. I don't know the specifics, but I'd be shocked if this doesn't already exist in some form.

  • @simpson6700
    @simpson6700 2 місяці тому

there is an OBS plugin that lets you set markers for your recordings. it's a mix between what you do. you can still record your whole VOD, but when a great moment happens you can hit a macro key to set the marker, which then writes the time stamp into a text file.

Thank you for another great podcast! I agree with other comments that more creators NEED to talk about this!! From my experience, many people simply cannot grasp how DIFFICULT it is to record, edit, render/publish a YT video [within a specified timeframe]. People think all the curated stuff is so easy to do... no no no sir!

😉 Advice? 🤔 Hmm…well, here’s one: remember memes are a thing, syntax errors and out-of-context clips drive them. “fail to disappoint” means disappointing, and we do know what you meant, but meme-ers don’t care.🤷‍♀️

I just wanted to let Skizz know that if you still feel imposterish. The whole community feels the difference that you're gone. Even the hermits miss you. You fit in in such a special way that it feels like you should've always been there. Nobody cares about your building skills. We just want you to be there doing what we'd be doing.
Ps I still hope you're having a great vacation but we miss you lol

I won't lie, working in accounting, I perked RIGHT up at the tax discussion, haha. We've had a few content creators and they have very interesting tax preparation and bookkeeping requirements because of how many expenses, multi-currency revenue streams, and payment processing services have to be accounted for. I admit they're also one of the careers we butt heads with the most regarding what qualifies as a business expense and what has to be recorded lmao.
I find this for many small business owners though, which honestly content creation *should* be qualified as if you intend to make a living off of it. There are a lot of businesses that are built off passions! But every single one comes with a lot of responsibilities and organization (and accounting) that many people aren't prepared for or taught about, and it's exacerbated by it relying solely on your own motivation/structures. Regular businesses have a lot of structures and resources that we don't even realize when we work as normal employees, and that can be a nasty surprise for people entering the self-employed world.
Thanks for the insight! Very very interesting!

As a guy who made his videos crawling through the hills of New England in snow or high temps, and somewhere in between, I can more than appreciate this one.
Waking up at 5AM to spend a Saturday or Sunday fighting mosquitos, ticks, woods, elevation, and whatever to rescue colonial history is one of those deals where it is only work if you don't love what you're doing. Some days are much better than others. Smile through it all.
