  • The Takeaway is a new kind of political interview for the UK General Election 2024.
Over a takeaway of their choice, candidates in the UK General Election tell The News Movement why they deserve your vote.
We sat down with Darren Jones, the Labour candidate for Bristol North West and Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, over a flat white and a vegan chickpea and spinach quiche to discuss the political betting scandal, why Jeremy Corbyn being Labour leader made him consider quitting as a candidate, and why it will cost hundreds of billions of pounds to achieve net zero.
Oh, and he treated us to a saxophone solo as well.

Darren is the sort of person who will bring back respectability into politics. He has shown himself to be a true servant of the people, asking telling questions that need to be asked in the committees he has been involved in and a thoroughly likeable person, one that you feel will always have your back - the antithesis of what we have been used to under this Tory government.

Darren Jones, what a breath of fresh air. He grew up in the same part of Bristol as me, Lawrence Weston aka L Dub. It's a run down and neglected area with a lot of poverty. He might sound posh but he's actually very down to earth. I'd like to see him become PM in the future.

The concerns he’s raising are legitimate unfortunately. Italy, and Hungary are already far right. France is lurching that way too. Germany is on that path. Fortunately Poland recently pulled back from the right. It’s unclear whether the EU we left will be the same organisation in five years. France has driven policy for decades in the EU, so them being unenthusiastic or even mildly willing to sabotage it is a real risk to the project.
I also think there’s a good reason to wait another five years, as more Brexiteers will die off, and the influence of the right wing press is also dying off.

For waiting another five years, I agree and disagree. Yes we need less mentality of the Brexit teas a lot of them have seen the truth but there are still a fair amount of them. I do believe though for labours long Jeopardy in government they do need to bring economic growth and I just don't see this being possible without being in the single marketing and customs union my fear is they will allow the far right Farage to keep on growing and potentially topple the government
