I like my bottom feed tanks. Didn't much like it though when I broke a front leaf spring, and it knocked off the petcock on the left tank. Pro tip, I carry a tapered wooden dowel just in case of such an emergency. Drive it in the hole to stop your expensive fuel from pissing off the EPA all over the ground.

The truck would sometimes stall if parked off camber & the fuel tank with the supply tube was on the high side & the fuel transferred to the tank on the lower side. Enough fuel would drain to the lower side tank to cause the engine to lose it prime .

I worked in the oil patch in northern BC and Alberta in the early 90s. I think I Snagged my cross over line with a log on a pipeline access. Got about 30 miles or so away from camp and there she died. January -40. No cell phones then but we had autotells and vhf XJ 2way radios but I was in the very north east corner of BC on winter roads and couldn’t get ahold of anyone. Didn’t see a truck till morning. There were disadvantages to the old ways too.

The tap would always break off wouldn't turn off. Returning fuel to both tanks helps to keep fuel from gelling.

Or you should know that in cold weather areas like Michigan it helps with that top drop fuel system keeping the fuel warm in the winter time cycling it through the engine dispersing it out between both tanks

Thanks to technology I parked on a shoulder leaning to the left side a few degrees of angle with just a quarter tank of fuel. Next thing I noticed is the engine shut off due to fuel starvation. All the fuel transfered into the left tank.i learned my lesson!!!

I have fixed this problem on my personal truck, fuel sucks from the drivers tank, when I run low on fuel I pressurize the passenger side tank to push the fuel over to the drivers side, then I shut off the crossover, get back in the truck and now my fuel gauge reads over quarter a tank, makes me feel better

As a Thermo King technician, I deal with this all the time. Brand new trucks seem to have plenty of fuel in the roadside tank, but hardly any in the curbside. This keeps the tripacs I install from starting. I always have to get the dealer to send someone down with a fuel truck to make sure there's adequate fuel to run the APUs

Actually, if you run the I90/94 and I80 corridor, heated returns are very necessary for multiple reasons.
    1- preventing fuel gelling
2- elk. That "safety bar" does absolutely nothing when you hit an elk. Hell, it does nothing against a mule deer.
3- the constant circulation prevents sludge and slime bacteria build up.
Because you do not understand the reasons for change does not negate the validity of the change.

My last two T680’s had a crossover line. The older one had two fuel gauges, but since you couldn’t select tanks, it seemed a bit pointless. My only thought was that they were pretty sure the fuel system wouldn’t keep things balanced, so they decided to give you some warning so you might avoid getting stranded. I guess my lack of understanding shows I wouldn’t be a good engineer.

With every video that I have seen from your channel, I am so absolutely glad to be sitting on my butt without a CDL anymore. It is way too much of a hassle to try to maintain even having the endorsement. I Pine for the day when we can just throw the rule book out the window and say to hell with this regulation shit and the morons that run it. Truck driving hasn't been profitable since the mid-90s, maybe even longer. It's really no longer the dream that it used to be.

Just get the job done and move on to the next one. I have to disagree on this one. As problematic as leveling on the top of the tank fuel line system design is it sure is better than valves and lines on the bottom. If you can Think it a driver will Do it. Or should I say it will happen. Keep on Trucking.

Modern diesels build way more fuel pressure than years ago, that causes more heat into the fuel. The tanks are plummed that way so to act like radiators. Got to get rid of some heat, that reduces horsepower.
