I feel like one of the best representations of superman was in the animated show during his "world of cardboard" speech. He is in no way a morally grey character, he represents truth and justice and the willingness to sacrifice ones own comfort and well being in order to protect those around you. My uncle is an exec/adjacent, works with monetizing products like movies, games etc. And it was almost scary when I asked him how they do it and he kept repeating "patterns" and "societal behaviour" like he knew exactly how everyone works. When I showed him how dogshit this stuff is he couldn't even comprehend that identity politics and "grey" characters weren't working, he kept repeating that things like changing the race of people just for "inclusion" will always be better because someone in India would definitely like a character more if they were also Indian, not if they were a good character.. And he couldn't be convinced... I think we have to completely sack the whole executive body in every game studio out there or bring gaming back to a niche. Same as with movies, I'm exhausted at the slew of awful big budget games that just don't bring their money's worth, give me more of Lies of P or Pizza Tower. Its the core story of superman after all , doing good when you're basically a god and could do anything. The only thing I'd disagree with asmon there is that making superman morally grey can be really interesting if done properly. Superman is the antagonist in injustice the comic series and they're probably my favorite comics.

The problem as always is Corporate greed. The people funding these games dont care about making a good game they care about milking gamers for every penny. They have openly said they want to bring back the old days of arcades where you have to pay over and over just to play. Everything corps touch eventually turns to shit due to greed and their total lack of morals and humanity.
But there shall always be game devs that do not agree with this sentiment. If most people boycot the milkers and buy games that don't follow the same sentiment the corpo's will see.

My favorite Superman movie is Superman Vs The Elite, where they literally show how letting villains live can be bad, BUT still shows that Superman will not do it. He isn't gray, he's meant to be who we should want to be.
I just wanna point out. People were begging Rocksteady to do a Superman game for YEARS, and STILL are. But instead they choose to vomit a Suicide Squad game, and when met with SO much disappointment, they choose to do it anyway. Problem with Superman game is, how would you do it? How do you make a game for a powerful character not be boring and can a engine handle something like that. First thing that comes to mind is Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, which was quite boring. Superman games are one of those weird hard games to make. The best game that did it decently but ignored the lore of Superman was DC Online.

The live service comments are on point. I used to play a lot of Destiny 2 (played since Destiny 1 release) and it just became such a chore. If you aren’t constantly on top of content drops, you fall really far behind the power curve and can’t even play endgame content that you would have been able to pre-content drop. I took about a 6 month break, came back and would have had to spend an extra $100 on expansions I missed while gone. That one was an eye opener. I used to be maxed out on three characters, I take a break and find out I might as well be a new player again. Just didn’t feel good. Came back to Monster Hunter World recently after like 2 years. I was at the same spot I left off at. It was so cathartic to be able to still progress from where I was. That my time away didn’t mean that I had to start over completely. If your not constantly on top of the live service game, you won’t be able to experience all of its content. I know I can go back to Dark Souls 3 or Elden ring whenever I want and it will still be the same incredible game.
Especially when it comes to getting to the very endgame. You have to grind and prey to go up 1 or 2 power levels. And don’t even get me started on how it’s near impossible to play some content like Iron Banner unless you live, breathe, and eat the game and nothing else at all.
I always roll my eyes when people say Batman's superpower is just money... It's his mind. That's how he beat everyone in the justice league in Tower of Babel. 100 moves ahead of everyone.
You know what makes this more sad, is the fact that this is supposedly the last thing Kevin Conroy, THE voice actor for Batman, voiced for, and yet we’re getting a trash game with his last performance in it.

I think one of the big factors for BG3 success is how almost anything you do is a valid strategy for any situation. There are some good turn based combat RPGs that are much more linear but still tell a great story. However if you're not a fan of that type of game then it can be frustrating. BG3 was like "Yeah, almost whatever you want to do will probably mostly work." which allowed people not into the genre to have an amazing time and those of us who are into the genre to come up with some incredibly game play. I've played through it twice now and every time I've found new stuff I haven't found before or new ways to deal with a situation. While the over all story is the same all the stuff in the middle can be wildly different. Hell just playing a new class/race/background will unlock new option you didn't have before.

How games are made today: -Focus group C said looter shooters are popular, focus group F said open world is popular, we have a license to make a game about "insert shitty IP", how do we make it a live service game ? Also our investors are clear, we need more diversity, so put a black chick in it and make it gay, we also want a slice of that battle royale pie, so add that somehow, last game didn't make enough selling microtransactions, our revenues are down, add more and make them less optional, what about a gacha system ? Who cares if it makes no sense, we need to make money and appeal to everyone.
That take on Superman is spot on. Favourite character growing up, not because he was all powerful, but because he wanted to help everyone but realized it wasn't always possible. It didn't make him morally ambiguous but gave him the desire to inspire hope so that ordinary citizens could fill the gaps.
I think gamers in general are burnt out and over live service games built just to get you addicted and drain your bank account. The formula of making a good game and selling it was going well, dunno why they stopped doing that.

Being turn-based made BG3 more easy to approach and play. The same did the fully voiced dialogs and other ingredients that made the BG3 more attractive for such a wider audience.

He's not saying turn-based games are successful exclusively because they're turn-based, Asmon. He's saying that they haven't fallen out of favor because of proven traction around Star Rail, Baldur's Gate, and Persona. The people that enjoy these games don't describe them as turn based, they explain the draw to them, such as the characters, voice work, music, and narrative. The only people that describe them as turn-based are the ones doing optics coverage and the people that are using that aspect about the game as an excuse not to play them.
Tbh, imo Star Rail is the best when it embrace the cheesefest and memes. It has a protagonist who literally caved into their intrusive thoughts and lick a frozen fence, or a giveaway fucking SAT textbook because of the memes. The gameplay is cool with mix and matching your team but that got fucked by the game being gacha and the gear grind

We thought Forspoken will win, then Redfall came out and took the title for less than 3 weeks, because Gollum was just around the corner ready to elbow drop them. We had a breathing room for few months, we thought nothing can beat Gollum, and then Payday 3 came out as online only game with broken servers, and last but not least the biggest challenger came out just before we finished 2023: The Day Before, seemingly came in with a briefcase and cashed in their money in the bank contract to secure Worst Game of 2023 title. As always, I mostly agree with these viewpoints, except for one part of the Jonathan Joestar thing. The first episode of JoJo is infuriating as Jonathan is basically the (honourable) fool. The guy assaulted his gf, killed his dog and flat out beat him in a street fight by cheating, while lying his ass off in front of JoJo's dad. Then comes the time skip and suddenly they're best friends. The first episode added nothing, if anything it made you dislike the protagonist for being a dumbass. If you skip it, you'll still have all the necessary characterisation, except of course for the appearance of Erina.
Live service games should be so toxic to devs that they treat it like a death sentence to their career. They should be actively saying no, going on strike, or looking for new jobs.
Unfortunately live service games make way too much money, which also affects developers’ checks and bonuses. So no, smart developers in terms of finances wouldn’t protest live service games, unless all live service games cause terrible developer conditions.

Live service isn't inherently bad tho it can be good if handle with care, it's dev expecting live services to work by adding the systems that most of the good live services changed and moved away from that makes it bad.
It’s the very reason Dragon Age Dreadwolf has taken 9.. *9 YEARS* to develop with still no release date. It was originally a live service multiplayer but they pulled a handbrake several years into development.

It's an elseworlds story. Classic DC. Basically, like a mutiverse. But it's more of a spin-off. They don't usually collide. Their more like one offs. Like What-if form marvel. An example of an elseworlds story is White Knight. Batman, the white knight is a really good comic. Search it up. So it's not cannon to the main arkhamverse, but instead a new, continued, verse of the arkhamverse. So don't worry. Just have with it.
Arkham Knight remains one of the greatest mediums ever made not just a game, but the entire story cinematography design and artstyle are still top notch. what a masterpiece.

As someone who hasn't played BG3 yet and is still going through builds and individual challenge runs in DOS2, I have absolute faith in the fact that BG3 is still gonna be an amazing game in 10 years. Good games made by studios, that are passionate and care about their players simply last the test of time. There's also a thing to be said about single player games when it comes to the longevity: mods can exponentially extend their lifespan, because you can make your experience different every single time you play. This is especially true for games that already stand out on their own merit and don't require mods to be great. Simple tweaks to increase variety of gameplay or improve the appearance of the game as it ages can go a long way without needing to overhaul the entire thing. Also if we look at Skyrim for an example we can also deduce that games can even rise from mediocrity with the support of the community. And while that doesn't make the game itself great, it will keep it relevant and bring in revenue for years to come. An RPG game with a lot to explore, multiple choices and ways to play will have players coming back time and time again - if done right. If DOS2 came out with a brand new DLC today, I would buy it, because even though the game is already a bit older I know I'll be playing it for years to come.
I always thought an interesting way to create a Superman game is to add a faction system and making reputation a factor. If you do good, you'll continue to be loved and do missions with The Justice League or other DC heroes If you do bad, you'll gain favor of the villains and The Justice League will come after you. Also, everytime you get into battle, you should always be challenged of being aware and cautious of your surroundings, trying your best to cause as minimal property damage and casualties as possible. If you end up being too careless and wreckless in battle, it'll also cause The Justice League to go after you.
Excellent is an understatement. They are a studio with a damn near perfect track record. With the exception of too many tank segments in AK, every game in the trilogy is _substantially_ better and more impressive than the last. They defined action combat for the coming decade in AA, absolutely perfected the formula with AC, and then they found a way to make it even better in AK. And now this shit...
The audience have been more receptive of the game and that became clear once the NDA was lifted. Almost everyone who played it enjoyed it and that includes the Batman fanboys who simply wanted a new Batman game. We also gotta remember they made a shooter before so they’re not new to this. I think the issue is a lack of faith. They trust rocksteady to make Batman and nothing else which is crazy because they haven’t really failed. I don’t like Batman at all but rocksteady made a great game. If they can make non Batman fans spend money on a Batman game, their audience should at least believe in their capabilities as developers. But their own fans aren’t fans of the studio if them doing something different is a problem.

So many people try to stream that have terrible personalities that aren't entertaining at all. Superman was and should be pure and that's why he has been loved. When certain filmmakers deconstruct him, add moral ambiguity, it destroys the character. He's no longer Superman but this other character that we don't know. Same with Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker. But that's the modern entertainment industry: gone is the Christopher Reeve Superman from 1978. Now we have one who snaps necks. Gone is the ever-hopeful fighter of justice, Luke, replaced by a hopeless hermit. The sweet, beautiful love story of Han and Leia is replaced by a divorced, disconnected couple and their psycho child.

When the concept of DLC first started I told people that this is where games would end up and nobody believed me, like it’s hard to believe that if you let greedy people get away with half-assing a job then they will do it as much as they can.
Famous designer Dieter Rams wrote down his thoughts on good design titled “10 Principles on Good Design”, which was later picked up and extrapolated to game design by Dan Taylor in a Gamasutra article on good level design. Recommend reading those because they do give a good idea as to why design choices in recent games sometimes feel weird or disconnected and not fun.

The game’s final boss battle usually requires the player to use every single piece of his equipment to win.
Not to mention that the first level of hiring a dev is performed by HR, not the department head. HR is going to put their bias first before considering the talent prospect.
Very good points about live service games being exhausting. There are so many games I WOULD play but can't keep up or being buying battle passes every season for every game to actually get most of their content. Most people can only stick to 1 or 2 live service games and hopefully this is realised.
Luckily for this game none of the battlepasses or any of the content goes away so there isn't FOMO at least so if you skip a season or just want to take a break you won't miss out on anything and all of the actual characters, story content, activities and new areas are free. The only person that likes this game is Skill Up, and he said he liked it about as much as he liked the Avengers game. So, take that as you will. He's also one of those game reviewers paid and flown out by studios to try their games, so the bias is clearly in their favor.
It looks like games are not played because they are fun anymore, but because it is a necessary chore. Or maybe people approach gaming in a different way; I like to play Halo Infinite multiplayer (and I'm a fan since Combat Evolved), but I've never completed any Battlepass, I just play it because is fun to have some games with randoms or friends. Sometimes I play it for several weekends straight, sometimes I leave the game for weeks to play something else, like Diablo II Resurrected where I'm getting my character to lvl 99 but I never approach it as a chore that I must play every weekend

Who was asking for a Suicide Squad game? I have never in my life thought that a Suicide Squad game was something that needed to be made. Not only did they make a SS game but they decided that copying Marvel's Avengers was a good idea. Nothing about this was a good decision.
I honestly, hand on chest, love the premise of this game because it has a fuck ton of potential on its own. Here we have to KILL heroes that we know are good people, we know aren''t in this by choice, and that can be very heartwrenching if done accordingly. The idea is very fucking cool, and honestly? I say there are villains that we've seen to be capable of killing heroes. El Diablo, Encahntress, Killer Frost, Polka Dot Man, I'm just naming some names that come into mind whose powers can be turned into fun kits for gameplay, and like holy shit, I do think that a Suicide Squad game is cool as fuck, but man, the NEED to make this into a live service game? Battle Passes and shit? fuck that, the Rocksteady fans want good storytelling and while a PvE Coop game like this could perfectly work for such an idea, this game is just not that. We've seen it from its core, and it sucks.

What you were saying about the fomo being a barrier is exactly what happened to me with destiny 2. I stopped playing it constantly for a few weeks so I could play a single player game I was excited for and then I was so lost I never went back.
Armored Core 6 was, honestly, the perfect example by Asmongold. People who dislike it, do so by personal preference, it`s that simple. But there`s no massive hate or bullshit surrounding the game. It is what is is, you like it for what it is or you don't. But this Suicide Squad game isn't what the studio used to do and is trying to be something already settled, it's trying to be like other service games instead of being it's own thing. Unfortunate.
I got to play the entire alpha and beta as well. In fact, I played about 5 hours of the beta with 3 friends. The gameplay was extremely annoying and unfun. The voiceacting was actually okay, although many of the lines were a bit questionable. However the worst part was genuinely the gameplay. The skilltrees did not feel like skill trees.... You get stuck in an endless loop of "melee to knock up the enemy because if you knock up an enemy every hit is a crit while they are airborn." Orrrrr if your shields are low, you shoot them first to lower their hp then "execute" them with a melee hit to get shields back. Thats the entire gameplay loop. For every enemy. Its not open world, if you deviate from the quest wp and try to explore Amanda Waller just "blows up your bombs" and kills you for exploring. Also if you are LATE to the WP, as in your team arrived before you, you have 3 seconds to get there or all of you die (yup Amanda Waller bomb again) This may sound comical, but its very annoying and makes the game feel liner and one dimensional.
Maybe because it's a beta, so u don't have access to all the map? u don't think to that? Maybe because it's not an open world like GTA or R2R? not thinking to that to? U know, u have just to go ahead in the story a little, and u can explore what u want after (in the aera limited for the beta). I've just finished the main story mission and Amanda Waller didn't blow up anyone. So, wtf is this argu for spit on the game? U search something for being like everyone but not too braindead? My wife and I personally had a great time with the beta. Movement felt great, combat was entertaining, story was fantastic for the little we got, and the gameplay loop felt good (again we didn't get much.) Either way I just pray this game isn't murdered by microtransactions and battlepasses etc. if it stays as it is as of beta it will be worth a play.
I thought it was going to be like the Batman Arkham games, but from the villains perspective. Once I saw the gameplay, I lost all interest, it is nothing like the Arkham games.
A lot of "live service" games were newer studios monetizing their free to play games with the strategy of making a low bar of entry (free) and keeping player base by being a good game. Now live service games are pushed out by established studios at AAA prices with added live service monetization for a game that isnt good enough to keep players around in order to sell their live service garbage.
Pretty much hit it on head. Public relations groups and advisors try to gauge the trends on what they think gamers want without even as much as a questionnaire. The last "what project out of this list are you the most interested in?" list I've officially seen was Square Enix like half a year ago. I would think it would be a bit easier to gauge player interest if they asked more often.
Things like this are complex. 1st you got these higher up that doesnt know anything about current trend, some of them are just in for the money and being strict. 2nd you got these stupid ideal that needs to follow some agenda. 3rd you got dev that just want money, have no experiences playing game because some of them are nerd from college who look down other people since they got into AAA 4th you got fked up timing, inflation, post-covid, toxic environment, another shitty agenda in the office 5th you got no leeway of anything. I bet theres more, way way more. But damn just look these 5 already give me a headache. Not to mention cost. So even if you hit the nail that the AAA need to have healthy relationship with playerbase. You still need to have a good sense of decision making. And thats entirely up to several people, some of these game entirely up to 1 person. Like Yoshi P

I'm really tired of villains now being superheroes. Harley Quinn is a sociopathic villain, but they've created a new narrative that when she dumped the Joker she started a reception arc, and I have serious problems with that. But at the same time they're pushing the "Harley is now a good guy" narrative at the same time we have Suicide Squad, where she's still a pure villain. Add to that the utterly maddening "deconstruct heroism" narrative, accentuating that individual heroes have feet of clay, but don't worry, if they become glorious People's Collective hero group, they stop being capitalist running-dog individualists that can't do anything right (except for doing things right) and become glorious part of collective that always does things right (except for when they disastrously fail), and I just want to scream. I'm still playing the ancient DC Universe Online, that's still going, still updating, still expanding.

This is why Genshin is so popular because the FOMO is removed if you have been playing for a while your account will beat everything in the game and you are not compelled to open up your wallet because the game becomes so easy. There's also no leaderboard and no one to compete with so you don't feel like you're "behind" if you missed a day or a month even.
Even if the people in charge get held accountable, they're still going to get a multimillion dollar severance package. The developers are just going to get a boot.
It's always just mindless drones and then they give you a gun and then you loot and then they make it live service with tons of microtransactions whether you paid full price or whether it was free to play, mind you, nobody asked for any of this and some of the studios are super well known for doing certain things very well and pushing them into something to make that they don't enjoy making and boy does it show!! Then they just do it again with a different theme if you can even call it that... Like just have the team make the games that they're good at making depending on what studio it is and take your ideas and make a game the way you're used to making it and everybody would love it!! How difficult is that for these bigwigs to understand? You would sell way more copies of the game and make way more money than you would even if it had microtransactions in it! It would out do the crap out of live service game sales with even with microtransactions by far! A good example would be that Hogwarts legacy was the best selling game of the year last year and it's going to way out do the amount of money that they got from suicide squad!! And it was a single player open world, pay for the game and play it until you beat it! Simple regular game and it did incredible on sales and fans of Harry Potter liked it and it wasn't even a perfect game, even though I personally loved it!! That just goes to show the difference. They're chasing this cash cow known as live service and they're never going to get it this way and we tell them that, as gamers, but they don't care. They deserve to suffer at that point!!! Again, Arkane studios should not be making live service games and neither should Rocksteady. They are both known for a specific kind of game and they could have taken DC or vampires and made a game in their style, and everyone would have loved it and everyone would have bought it and they would have made a crap ton of money but instead they ruin the studios reputations and force them into something they didn't even want to do in the first place and that's known, that neither of these studios wanted to do these games. It shows as well because why would you have any enthusiasm for a game you don't want to make in the first place and something your studio isn't known for!!! You're going to lose all of your fans and all the trust and it's the people in charge that are at fault, obviously, because they're money hungry and gamers will just continue to suffer as well as the companies... It's a lose-lose and they keep doing it! F them man.
whats so sad about this is i love the concept even though its incredibly unrealistic. it couldve been something special and unique but they didnt wanna take that route. really sad.
So a friend challenged me some time back to try and figure out a way to make a Superman game somewhat viable (at least how you'd scale threats) and I came up with something easy but it works. 1. You got your bog standard criminals, utterly no threat at all to the point Supes stands there and goes "It tickles" as they try to harm him. Instantly beating via a light fingerflick to the head. 2. Next would be better equipped thugs, maybe Lexcorp supplied stuff, they can slowly but surely chip away at Supes if he lets them and there's alot of them but still not a huge threat. 3. Properly kitted out guys. Think like Kryptonite laced weapons, strength enhancing drugs/tech, maybe even magic as Supes has always been rather vulnerable to magic, not weak but no resistance to it. 4. Here's were you start slipping in metas, maybe some C-listers and the occasional B-lister to be that "captain" or such to the kitted out thugs. 5. Now the more well-knows come in like Bizzaro, Livewire, Volcana, and Lex, these are the big main threats and the obvious bosses of the game. 6. This is more the optional or big end bosses like Darkseid or Lobo (just cause Lobo is all but immortal so he can be a recurring and scaling secret boss) As for how you'd upgrade him, I guess you could do something like finding Kryptonian records or such, maybe functional suits to defend against weaknesses, or Supes "releases" his subconscious limiters to make himself stronger to match the threats as they escalate. Then as an added treat for postgame fun, you can go full power, truly invulnerable Supes in the free roam but the game temporarily disables it or lets you choose to disable it if you missed any side bosses so you still get a challenge at least It's not a perfect idea but it's better then the nothing we've gotten for years. And yes, this is proper Supes, the paragon we know and love, not the endlessly tiring villain turned one or the moral gray one.
A major issue with every developer or publisher chasing those live service dollars is that it's a VERY competitive market, and incredibly crowded by other games doing the same thing. Everyone thinks that if they can just put out a basic live service game, and then they'll make GTA or Fortnite money. But a major reason those games make so much money is because they're the best games in those live service markets, and there's only enough room at the top of those live service markets for a handful of games. And even then, no matter how good your game is, you're gonna struggle to hit those numbers because most of the people who are willing to play Live Service games are already playing one of the bigger existing ones, and due to a combination of both brand loyalty and the sunk cost fallacy, there's very little chance you'll get them to forsake their current chosen live service for yours. You have SO MUCH working against you, because you need to make a near perfect game that's also monetized in a way that's not gamer repellent, and even then, you still run the risk that people won't bother trying your game even if it's objectively better than what they're already playing. Your best case scenario a lot of the time is making a really good game that makes just enough money to stay profitable until one of it's competitors at the top gets screwed by it's publisher doing something stupid, at which point you'll be able to siphon off a lot of their players. Basically what happened when WoW lost a bunch of customers to Final Fantasy XIV a few years ago due to some screw up from Activision Blizzard.

I feel like one of the best representations of superman was in the animated show during his "world of cardboard" speech. He is in no way a morally grey character, he represents truth and justice and the willingness to sacrifice ones own comfort and well being in order to protect those around you. He has the nick name the big blue boy scout for a reason, he's the moral compass of the Justice League. Batman on multiple occasions said that if Superman wasn't on his team he would be a much darker person

The problem as always is Corporate greed. The people funding these games dont care about making a good game they care about milking gamers for every penny. They have openly said they want to bring back the old days of arcades where you have to pay over and over just to play. Everything corps touch eventually turns to shit due to greed and their total lack of morals and humanity.
But there shall always be game devs that do not agree with this sentiment. If most people boycot the milkers and buy games that don't follow the same sentiment the corpo's will see.

Problem with Superman game is, how would you do it? How do you make a game for a powerful character not be boring and can a engine handle something like that. First thing that comes to mind is Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, which was quite boring. Superman games are one of those weird hard games to make. The best game that did it decently but ignored the lore of Superman was DC Online.

The live service comments are on point. I used to play a lot of Destiny 2 (played since Destiny 1 release) and it just became such a chore. If you aren’t constantly on top of content drops, you fall really far behind the power curve and can’t even play endgame content that you would have been able to pre-content drop. I took about a 6 month break, came back and would have had to spend an extra $100 on expansions I missed while gone. That one was an eye opener. I used to be maxed out on three characters, I take a break and find out I might as well be a new player again. Just didn’t feel good. Came back to Monster Hunter World recently after like 2 years. I was at the same spot I left off at. It was so cathartic to be able to still progress from where I was. That my time away didn’t mean that I had to start over completely. If your not constantly on top of the live service game, you won’t be able to experience all of its content. I know I can go back to Dark Souls 3 or Elden ring whenever I want and it will still be the same incredible game.
Especially when it comes to getting to the very endgame. You have to grind and prey to go up 1 or 2 power levels. And don’t even get me started on how it’s near impossible to play some content like Iron Banner unless you live, breathe, and eat the game and nothing else at all.

I think one of the big factors for BG3 success is how almost anything you do is a valid strategy for any situation. There are some good turn based combat RPGs that are much more linear but still tell a great story. However if you're not a fan of that type of game then it can be frustrating. BG3 was like "Yeah, almost whatever you want to do will probably mostly work." which allowed people not into the genre to have an amazing time and those of us who are into the genre to come up with some incredibly game play. I've played through it twice now and every time I've found new stuff I haven't found before or new ways to deal with a situation. While the over all story is the same all the stuff in the middle can be wildly different. Hell just playing a new class/race/background will unlock new option you didn't have before.
No wonder BG3 wasnt for me.

That take on Superman is spot on. Favourite character growing up, not because he was all powerful, but because he wanted to help everyone but realized it wasn't always possible. It didn't make him morally ambiguous but gave him the desire to inspire hope so that ordinary citizens could fill the gaps.

Being turn-based made BG3 more easy to approach and play. The same did the fully voiced dialogs and other ingredients that made the BG3 more attractive for such a wider audience.

He's not saying turn-based games are successful exclusively because they're turn-based, Asmon. He's saying that they haven't fallen out of favor because of proven traction around Star Rail, Baldur's Gate, and Persona. Tbh, imo Star Rail is the best when it embrace the cheesefest and memes. It has a protagonist who literally caved into their intrusive thoughts and lick a frozen fence, or a giveaway fucking SAT textbook because of the memes. As always, I mostly agree with these viewpoints, except for one part of the Jonathan Joestar thing. The first episode of JoJo is infuriating as Jonathan is basically the (honourable) fool. The guy assaulted his gf, killed his dog and flat out beat him in a street fight by cheating, while lying his ass off in front of JoJo's dad. Then comes the time skip and suddenly they're best friends.
The first episode added nothing, if anything it made you dislike the protagonist for being a dumbass. If you skip it, you'll still have all the necessary characterisation, except of course for the appearance of Erina.
Live service games should be so toxic to devs that they treat it like a death sentence to their career. They should be actively saying no, going on strike, or looking for new jobs.
Unfortunately live service games make way too much money, which also affects developers’ checks and bonuses. So no, smart developers in terms of finances wouldn’t protest live service games, unless all live service games cause terrible developer conditions.

It’s the very reason Dragon Age Dreadwolf has taken 9.. *9 YEARS* to develop with still no release date. It was originally a live service multiplayer but they pulled a handbrake several years into development.

The imposter shit doesn’t work narratively and Harley says she had a romantic relationship with Ivy and tries to jog her memory of it in one of the leak cutscenes. It's an elseworlds story. Classic DC. Basically, like a mutiverse. But it's more of a spin-off. They don't usually collide. Their more like one offs. Like What-if form marvel. An example of an elseworlds story is White Knight. Batman, the white knight is a really good comic. Search it up. So it's not cannon to the main arkhamverse, but instead a new, continued, verse of the arkhamverse. So don't worry. Just have with it.

As someone who hasn't played BG3 yet and is still going through builds and individual challenge runs in DOS2, I have absolute faith in the fact that BG3 is still gonna be an amazing game in 10 years. Good games made by studios, that are passionate and care about their players simply last the test of time. There's also a thing to be said about single player games when it comes to the longevity: mods can exponentially extend their lifespan, because you can make your experience different every single time you play. This is especially true for games that already stand out on their own merit and don't require mods to be great. Simple tweaks to increase variety of gameplay or improve the appearance of the game as it ages can go a long way without needing to overhaul the entire thing. Also if we look at Skyrim for an example we can also deduce that games can even rise from mediocrity with the support of the community. And while that doesn't make the game itself great, it will keep it relevant and bring in revenue for years to come. An RPG game with a lot to explore, multiple choices and ways to play will have players coming back time and time again - if done right. If DOS2 came out with a brand new DLC today, I would buy it, because even though the game is already a bit older I know I'll be playing it for years to come.
I always thought an interesting way to create a Superman game is to add a faction system and making reputation a factor. If you do good, you'll continue to be loved and do missions with The Justice League or other DC heroes
If you do bad, you'll gain favor of the villains and The Justice League will come after you. Also, everytime you get into battle, you should always be challenged of being aware and cautious of your surroundings, trying your best to cause as minimal property damage and casualties as possible. If you end up being too careless and wreckless in battle, it'll also cause The Justice League to go after you.
Rocksteady might go under if this game bombs. From all that I heard, very disappointing that this is the next game after the excellent Arkham Knight.

They are a studio with a damn near perfect track record.
With the exception of too many tank segments in AK, every game in the trilogy is _substantially_ better and more impressive than the last.
They defined action combat for the coming decade in AA, absolutely perfected the formula with AC, and then they found a way to make it even better in AK.

The audience have been more receptive of the game and that became clear once the NDA was lifted. Almost everyone who played it enjoyed it and that includes the Batman fanboys who simply wanted a new Batman game. We also gotta remember they made a shooter before so they’re not new to this. I think the issue is a lack of faith. They trust rocksteady to make Batman and nothing else which is crazy because they haven’t really failed. I don’t like Batman at all but rocksteady made a great game. If they can make non Batman fans spend money on a Batman game, their audience should at least believe in their capabilities as developers. But their own fans aren’t fans of the studio if them doing something different is a problem.

So many people try to stream that have terrible personalities that aren't entertaining at all. Superman was and should be pure and that's why he has been loved. When certain filmmakers deconstruct him, add moral ambiguity, it destroys the character. He's no longer Superman but this other character that we don't know. Same with Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker. But that's the modern entertainment industry: gone is the Christopher Reeve Superman from 1978. Now we have one who snaps necks. Gone is the ever-hopeful fighter of justice, Luke, replaced by a hopeless hermit. The sweet, beautiful love story of Han and Leia is replaced by a divorced, disconnected couple and their psycho child.

Very good points about live service games being exhausting. There are so many games I WOULD play but can't keep up or being buying battle passes every season for every game to actually get most of their content. Most people can only stick to 1 or 2 live service games and hopefully this is realised.
Luckily for this game none of the battlepasses or any of the content goes away so there isn't FOMO at least so if you skip a season or just want to take a break you won't miss out on anything and all of the actual characters, story content, activities and new areas are free. I hate how other live services use FOMO to get you to play their game. Sucks it's a live service, but who knows maybe it won't be bad

The only person that likes this game is Skill Up, and he said he liked it about as much as he liked the Avengers game. So, take that as you will. He's also one of those game reviewers paid and flown out by studios to try their games, so the bias is clearly in their favor.

It looks like games are not played because they are fun anymore, but because it is a necessary chore. Or maybe people approach gaming in a different way; I like to play Halo Infinite multiplayer (and I'm a fan since Combat Evolved), but I've never completed any Battlepass, I just play it because is fun to have some games with randoms or friends. Sometimes I play it for several weekends straight, sometimes I leave the game for weeks to play something else, like Diablo II Resurrected where I'm getting my character to lvl 99 but I never approach it as a chore that I must play every weekend

Who was asking for a Suicide Squad game? I have never in my life thought that a Suicide Squad game was something that needed to be made. Not only did they make a SS game but they decided that copying Marvel's Avengers was a good idea. Nothing about this was a good decision.
I honestly, hand on chest, love the premise of this game because it has a fuck ton of potential on its own. Here we have to KILL heroes that we know are good people, we know aren''t in this by choice, and that can be very heartwrenching if done accordingly. The idea is very fucking cool, and honestly? I say there are villains that we've seen to be capable of killing heroes. El Diablo, Encahntress, Killer Frost, Polka Dot Man, I'm just naming some names that come into mind whose powers can be turned into fun kits for gameplay, and like holy shit, I do think that a Suicide Squad game is cool as fuck, but man, the NEED to make this into a live service game? Battle Passes and shit? fuck that, the Rocksteady fans want good storytelling and while a PvE Coop game like this could perfectly work for such an idea, this game is just not that. Armored Core 6 was, honestly, the perfect example by Asmongold. People who dislike it, do so by personal preference, it`s that simple. But there`s no massive hate or bullshit surrounding the game. The gameplay was extremely annoying and unfun. The voiceacting was actually okay, although many of the lines were a bit questionable.
However the worst part was genuinely the gameplay.
The skilltrees did not feel like skill trees....
You get stuck in an endless loop of "melee to knock up the enemy because if you knock up an enemy every hit is a crit while they are airborn."
Orrrrr if your shields are low, you shoot them first to lower their hp then "execute" them with a melee hit to get shields back.
Thats the entire gameplay loop. For every enemy. Its not open world, if you deviate from the quest wp and try to explore Amanda Waller just "blows up your bombs" and kills you for exploring.
Also if you are LATE to the WP, as in your team arrived before you, you have 3 seconds to get there or all of you die (yup Amanda Waller bomb again)
This may sound comical, but its very annoying and makes the game feel liner and one dimensional.
Punishing players for exploring by literally killing their character is the dumbest game design move I've heard in a long time

For the gameplay, u have only fighting game where the gameplay change for every player u fight online, but character as an archetype, so not really changing things at the end)

@@roninsleepin Glad to hear it. It doesn't really seem like a game I'd be into personally, regardless, but I do hope it is enjoyable for those who are.
My wife and I personally had a great time with the beta. Movement felt great, combat was entertaining, story was fantastic for the little we got, and the gameplay loop felt good (again we didn't get much.) Either way I just pray this game isn't murdered by microtransactions and battlepasses etc. if it stays as it is as of beta it will be worth a play.
I’ve grown up with Superman and Batman. They could have make a Superman game rather than making suicide squad trying to kill the impossible

I thought it was going to be like the Batman Arkham games, but from the villains perspective.

A lot of "live service" games were newer studios monetizing their free to play games with the strategy of making a low bar of entry (free) and keeping player base by being a good game. Now live service games are pushed out by established studios at AAA prices with added live service monetization for a game that isnt good enough to keep players around in order to sell their live service garbage.
Pretty much hit it on head. Public relations groups and advisors try to gauge the trends on what they think gamers want without even as much as a questionnaire. The last "what project out of this list are you the most interested in?" list I've officially seen was Square Enix like half a year ago. I would think it would be a bit easier to gauge player interest if they asked more often.
The new WoT game looks interesting, but they DO ask what do you like in games in general in order to register for the alpha.
Atlus and Sega do a ton and sega’s survey led to us getting the samurai yakuza spin off games released in the west.
Things like this are complex.
1st you got these higher up that doesnt know anything about current trend, some of them are just in for the money and being strict.
2nd you got these stupid ideal that needs to follow some agenda.
3rd you got dev that just want money, have no experiences playing game because some of them are nerd from college who look down other people since they got into AAA
4th you got fked up timing, inflation, post-covid, toxic environment, another shitty agenda in the office
5th you got no leeway of anything.
I bet theres more, way way more. But damn just look these 5 already give me a headache. Not to mention cost.
So even if you hit the nail that the AAA need to have healthy relationship with playerbase. You still need to have a good sense of decision making. And thats entirely up to several people, some of these game entirely up to 1 person. Like Yoshi P
lol this used to happen, devs talking to community on forums but in this age of high Internet speeds and free site servers and improved layouts, devs and companies just ghost you. Never engaging or be interested in what the community is modding the game to be, another thing where devs don't care for modding. Just want everyone to be a console peasant

The point about brand loyalty is absolutely true. These new GAAS are not only competing against other games in general, they are also fighting against old GAAS and if we are talking looter shooters then Destiny 2, warframe, etc. people are not going to jump ship immediately
Uhhhh superman is not a morally gray character. He has some of the absolute strongest morals in all of DC, trying to always do the right thing and not harming others, even to his own downfall
I'm really tired of villains now being superheroes. Harley Quinn is a sociopathic villain, but they've created a new narrative that when she dumped the Joker she started a reception arc, and I have serious problems with that. But at the same time they're pushing the "Harley is now a good guy" narrative at the same time we have Suicide Squad, where she's still a pure villain.
Add to that the utterly maddening "deconstruct heroism" narrative, accentuating that individual heroes have feet of clay, but don't worry, if they become glorious People's Collective hero group, they stop being capitalist running-dog individualists that can't do anything right (except for doing things right) and become glorious part of collective that always does things right (except for when they disastrously fail), and I just want to scream.
I'm still playing the ancient DC Universe Online, that's still going, still updating, still expanding.

This is why Genshin is so popular because the FOMO is removed if you have been playing for a while your account will beat everything in the game and you are not compelled to open up your wallet because the game becomes so easy. There's also no leaderboard and no one to compete with so you don't feel like you're "behind" if you missed a day or a month even.
Even if the people in charge get held accountable, they're still going to get a multimillion dollar severance package. The developers are just going to get a boot.
It's always just mindless drones and then they give you a gun and then you loot and then they make it live service with tons of microtransactions whether you paid full price or whether it was free to play, mind you, nobody asked for any of this and some of the studios are super well known for doing certain things very well and pushing them into something to make that they don't enjoy making and boy does it show!! Then they just do it again with a different theme if you can even call it that... Like just have the team make the games that they're good at making depending on what studio it is and take your ideas and make a game the way you're used to making it and everybody would love it!! How difficult is that for these bigwigs to understand? You would sell way more copies of the game and make way more money than you would even if it had microtransactions in it! It would out do the crap out of live service game sales with even with microtransactions by far! A good example would be that Hogwarts legacy was the best selling game of the year last year and it's going to way out do the amount of money that they got from suicide squad!! And it was a single player open world, pay for the game and play it until you beat it! Simple regular game and it did incredible on sales and fans of Harry Potter liked it and it wasn't even a perfect game, even though I personally loved it!! That just goes to show the difference. They're chasing this cash cow known as live service and they're never going to get it this way and we tell them that, as gamers, but they don't care. They deserve to suffer at that point!!! Again, Arkane studios should not be making live service games and neither should Rocksteady. They are both known for a specific kind of game and they could have taken DC or vampires and made a game in their style, and everyone would have loved it and everyone would have bought it and they would have made a crap ton of money but instead they ruin the studios reputations and force them into something they didn't even want to do in the first place and that's known, that neither of these studios wanted to do these games. It shows as well because why would you have any enthusiasm for a game you don't want to make in the first place and something your studio isn't known for!!! You're going to lose all of your fans and all the trust and it's the people in charge that are at fault, obviously, because they're money hungry and gamers will just continue to suffer as well as the companies... It's a lose-lose and they keep doing it! F them man.

So a friend challenged me some time back to try and figure out a way to make a Superman game somewhat viable (at least how you'd scale threats) and I came up with something easy but it works.
1. You got your bog standard criminals, utterly no threat at all to the point Supes stands there and goes "It tickles" as they try to harm him. Instantly beating via a light fingerflick to the head.
2. Next would be better equipped thugs, maybe Lexcorp supplied stuff, they can slowly but surely chip away at Supes if he lets them and there's alot of them but still not a huge threat.
3. Properly kitted out guys. Think like Kryptonite laced weapons, strength enhancing drugs/tech, maybe even magic as Supes has always been rather vulnerable to magic, not weak but no resistance to it.
4. Here's were you start slipping in metas, maybe some C-listers and the occasional B-lister to be that "captain" or such to the kitted out thugs.
5. Now the more well-knows come in like Bizzaro, Livewire, Volcana, and Lex, these are the big main threats and the obvious bosses of the game.
6. This is more the optional or big end bosses like Darkseid or Lobo (just cause Lobo is all but immortal so he can be a recurring and scaling secret boss)
As for how you'd upgrade him, I guess you could do something like finding Kryptonian records or such, maybe functional suits to defend against weaknesses, or Supes "releases" his subconscious limiters to make himself stronger to match the threats as they escalate. Then as an added treat for postgame fun, you can go full power, truly invulnerable Supes in the free roam but the game temporarily disables it or lets you choose to disable it if you missed any side bosses so you still get a challenge at least
It's not a perfect idea but it's better then the nothing we've gotten for years. And yes, this is proper Supes, the paragon we know and love, not the endlessly tiring villain turned one or the moral gray one.
A major issue with every developer or publisher chasing those live service dollars is that it's a VERY competitive market, and incredibly crowded by other games doing the same thing. Everyone thinks that if they can just put out a basic live service game, and then they'll make GTA or Fortnite money. But a major reason those games make so much money is because they're the best games in those live service markets, and there's only enough room at the top of those live service markets for a handful of games. And even then, no matter how good your game is, you're gonna struggle to hit those numbers because most of the people who are willing to play Live Service games are already playing one of the bigger existing ones, and due to a combination of both brand loyalty and the sunk cost fallacy, there's very little chance you'll get them to forsake their current chosen live service for yours. You have SO MUCH working against you, because you need to make a near perfect game that's also monetized in a way that's not gamer repellent, and even then, you still run the risk that people won't bother trying your game even if it's objectively better than what they're already playing. Your best case scenario a lot of the time is making a really good game that makes just enough money to stay profitable until one of it's competitors at the top gets screwed by it's publisher doing something stupid, at which point you'll be able to siphon off a lot of their players. Basically what happened when WoW lost a bunch of customers to Final Fantasy XIV a few years ago due to some screw up from Activision Blizzard.
