People pull the trigger without hesitation and die indifferently. Even if we cling to life like waves, death is always there, like a calm sea. Rather than a sense of despair leading up to annihilation, there is a clear beauty that cannot be expressed through dialogue alone. Personally, I think it's a masterpiece among Kitano's films, and I want you to see it before you die.
It reminded me how No Country for Old Men treats its audience. The explanation of fish on a spear gave also an additional context for Angel's Egg interpretation, as it turns out that The Fisheries Act was established in 1985 half a year before movie release (this may be overanalyzed though, as it's Malaysian law). Thanks for recommendation :)
Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think besides this already being a niche enough film in the West as it is I unfortunately got a copyright strike from the European distribution team for this film which is of course within their jurisdiction. So I think it might've impacted it's reach perhaps as it's currently blocked in French speaking regions which is the best I could get otherwise it would've been blocked worldwide. I tried contacting the company in the Summer to no avail so hopefully I can try again when I have more time but It'll have to do for now. Thank you for your comment too! :)
Amazing movie but you guys have gotta stop saying things like "You've definitely Never Seen this!!!!!!!111111". Everyone has seen Sonatine, it's probably Kitano's second most popular movie after Hanabi. Even my mum has seen it. BTW if anyone wants to see a thematically similar movie (IE - gangsters being buddies and laying low and goofing off), check out the 2006 Hong Kong movie Exiled.
