I've said it before, and I'll say it again: From Spaced to Baby Driver, and beyond, Edgar Wright is one of the most original directors working today. I've already taken a look at his first studio feature film, Shaun of the Dead, and why it's still today such a brilliant genre-blending comedy. Today, I'll be looking at his next film: Hot Fuzz, my personal favorite, and one of the greatest buddy cop action comedies ever made. Specifically, I'll delve into many of Edgar Wright and Hot Fuzz's filmic influences that helped shape the young director and his movie into what it is.

One of the absolute greatest genre screenplays ever written. You really have to have a certain mind to write something as intricately hilarious as Hot Fuzz.
Word
Innit
If I am trap in a fallout style bunker and I have to choose one movie that I would bring to the bunker Hot Fuzz is definitely the movie I am bringing.
Yarp.
Pretty sure it's been said that comedy is truly _the hardest_ genre to be successful in, that it takes a genius to write jokes that land with audiences and resonate with them.
_(I'm combining what people have said about comedy movies, AND being a stand-up comic)_
Hot Fuzz is a perfect screenplay, absolutely zero wasted dialogue.
Exactly! everything is set up, punchline, call back, foreshadowing watching it over and over again is a joy
Everyone goes on about Casablanca. It's fine, but this movie is perfection.
(no sarcasm)
Yarp.
@@piyam5000 and it works as a comedy, as a bit of a murder mystery and an action movie. Not many movies can claim to work across genres like that. Hot fuzz does it and does it very, very well.

Jim Broadbent exclaiming "A GREAT BIG BUSHY BEARD" lives rent free in my head.
Crusty Jugglers
Every film is improved with the addition of Jim Broadbent
"You incompetent flatfoots!"
"It's for the greater good."
"THE GREATER GOOD!!"
Same! It lives right nextdoor to Bill Nighy saying "We had our jabs in the Isle of Wight"
Hot Fuzz is one of the few films I'd consider perfect. That doesn't mean it's the _best_ film, or even my favourite, but that it accomplishes exactly what it set out to do in the best way possible. There's no tweak to the film you could make it that would improve it.
I know what you mean and totally agree. Wright has said his only regret was that the car chase to the model village wasn’t quite long or exciting enough. Which like, sure. But that’s pretty darn good if that’s the only thing that could be conceivably improved upon.
That's a great description!
I like the movie, but the ending was ruined by the extra bomb at the end. The movie seems to end, you thinks it is over, and then there is another bomb, so you have two endings, and it was disappointing. They just went too far.
@@kennethgreifer5123 Wasn't that the point though?
@@brandoncooke6564 Did you ever see Galaxy Quest? It seems to end 4 times.
No, I have never fired my gun in the air and gone "ahhhh."

Well have you even fired two guns whilst flying through the air?
😂
My mum lives in the small rural city of Wells, Somerset where Hot Fuzz was filmed, and it is the pride and joy of the community. People from our county quote it constantly.
A few weeks ago they screened it on an inflatable cinema in the Bishops Palace garden where they shot the sinister “greater good” scene ❤
the greater good
Shaun of the Dead is brilliant, yes, but I will live and die by Hot Fuzz
Agreed. Enjoyed the heck out of the former, but the latter will forever remain my favorite comedy of all time. World's End is pretty solid too tho...
Fully agree
Hot Fuzz lives rent free in my head
Totally agree.
Weak third act and ending, SOD is a superior script
No matter how many times I watch Hot Fuzz, the blend of tones when Danny tells Angel to take his car and leave (highly dramatic) blended with the "Judge Judy and Executioner" line kills me
The scene where Cart/Wainwright disapprovingly both move off screen, only for one to duck back on then look disapprovingly again. Epic.
😂brilliant bit and the sound the accompanies it
I just LOVE that the thumbnail for this video is from one of the funniest scenes: Oscar winning actress Olivia Coleman going "what makes you think it was murr-durr?!" 😂
She's so goddamn funny in Hot Fuzz, too.
Nothin' like a bit 'o girl-on-girl, is there?
I've been round the station a few times.
"I don't know, I quite like a midnight gobble." 😂
“Cmon Doris, you don’t mind a bit of manpower!”
This and Galaxy Quest I think are prime examples of love letters to genres and specific movies. They're both brilliant movies that have held up so well. I think it's mainly due to the fact they genuinely respect, understand and apprecite the source materials for all their strengths and flaws!
YESSS I FUCKIN LOVE GALAXY QUEST
That's exactly the same reason Mel Brooks' movies are so good
Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are a truly great comedy team too. Their role playing is pretty consistent across films - "Paul" is a great example of this from a different director.
Although these days Simon Pegg is busy hanging out with Tom Cruise and never, ever expressing an opinion about Scientology.
simon pegg(ed)
Hot Fuzz is the best in the Cornetto Trilogy. I have watched this twice as much as the other two movies in the series.
Personally I think Shaun of the Dead is the best in the Trilogy but the other two are just as good
Loved Hot Fuzz, the mystery of the town and the intrigue made it the best in my opinion
Agreed. Just an impeccable script, plot, cinematography, acting, casting, and editing.
And of course a movie as timeless as this one will become got zero awards recognition. I don't understand how the glitterati just don't get comedy.
Cornetto Trilogy xD
If I may ask the people who obviously like the third film as well. What's draws you in and keeps your interest? I had trouble watching it to the end once and for me it's not that funny or interesting. While Shaun was good and Fuzz was brilliant.
Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim are two of my favourite examples of top notch filmmaking. Not just the writing and directing, but all the cuts, interstitials, jokes, pacing, everything. They're perfection.
YES! The rate in which Scott Pilgrim fires its jokes, puns and just clever gags from every angle and in every direction is mind-melting. It's everywhere, from the images, cuts, editing as such, music, sound FX and of course dialogue & acting. It's incredibly rewatchable, much like Hot Fuzz (Pegg & Frost even have a cameo in the Scott Pilgrim series)
My favourite example of this from Scott Pilgrim is the sequence where Knives goes to his apartment to find him and the door is answered by his roommate. That whole exchange where Scott is kinda visible, then hidden, then jumps out of the window and leaves behind Knives is so well choreographed that you almost forget about the dialogue, which just reinforces the humour of the situation.
Hot Fuzz is such a rewatchable film. I never grow tired of it.
practically every line of dialogue foreshadows something later. the writing and editing of hot fuzz is just too damn clean
This and Every Frame A Painting’s take on Edgar Wright’s work are both top notch. Thanks, Danny. Love your essays.
I like to think that when our guy Danny does a video essay about a movie, it gets all trendy and hyped up on imdb - I've noticed this happen like five times lately. A humble thanks for introducing these masterpieces to us.
I doubt I’ll ever have quite that much influence. But I like the thought of that.
:)
@@CinemaStix surely more than half of the people who enjoy this beautiful essay google it, then look it up on imdb - and then, the little green arrow is upwards! Thank you Danny, loved Hot Fuzz !!
@@CinemaStixone day you certainly could, your a fantastic video essasiest and people are certainly noticing
@@The-Busy-Beeeeethe little green arrow there on imdb is upwards, i checked just now. Tis true!
Hot Fuzz is definitely my favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy. I didn't even like it all that much upon first watching, but my roommate would put it on a lot, and it wasn't until I started noticing all the little details and callbacks upon repeat viewings that I realized just how amazing it was. Edgar Wright is now one of my favorite directors.
I remember seeing Hot Fuzz in the theatre with my mom-- I grew up raised on 80s and 90s movies that my parents liked, and seeing something that so brilliantly paid homage to so much of that was an amazing experience for us to share. Probably the most my mom and I have ever laughed together that I can remember.
Great movie! There is no such thing as motor vehicle accidents. If they were accidents then no one would be to blame.
Love it.

Something else I love about this movie is how it parodies the quick and almost incoherent editing that many actions movies did at the time like Jason Bourne but ironically somehow manages to be coherent than the films it's parodying. I hope that one day I'll become just as good of a director as Edgar Wright, it's very unlikely but a man can dream. 😔
Edit: To everyone in the replies thanks for the words of encouragement it was so unexpected but I greatly appreciate it 😭😭
Nah, don't say things like "it's unlikely" or "maybe". You can. You will.
Not with that attitude. You owe it to the world. Go make that movie man
1. It could be a parody but the fast paced kinetic editing is a huge part of wright’s signature style
2. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU SET YOUR MIND TO IT BRO 😤 NEVER GIVE UP
You won't become the next Edgar Wright with that attitude.
If nothing else, try your best. It will be an entertaining wreck even if you fail. And if you succeed, I want my name in the credits.
@@_blondwell Well I'll try my best. Thanks for the words of encouragement bro :D
Hot Fuzz is my favourite movie of all time, I sometimes chuckle like a maniac when I think about a scene.
That absolute mad lad at 5:30 , three stories up, no safety equipment, just shimmying across a bending scaffolding pole😂
07:26 "Don't shoot me! Who's gonna direct?" Made crack 🤣🤣
This film makes me just beam with delight- especially that final high octane third.
“My my, here comes the fuzz”
Hot Fuzz is quite possibly the best movie of all time, objectively speaking. Very few that I've introduced it to haven't declared it their favorite and fewer still haven't at least had it in their top ten. That's a lot of double negatives, but I'm sure at least one person will understand.
Yes

Agreed! Yes, it can be a comedy, buddy, action, parody movie!
Watch this movie ten times in a row, then do it with 'Gone With the Wind' or 'Casablanca' and see how you feel. Which one elevates the human experience?
It’s my favorite movie. I’ve got a poster of it in my home
@@Candyapplebone you cuddly monkey.
Great video! It’s fascinating how Edgar Wright managed to create something unique and uniquely entertaining, even though every scene feels like a reference to older movies.
Dude how did they not make more of these genre parody movies? Absolutely knocked it out of the park with Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead
They made the worlds end, which wasn't that well received. Edgar Wright also went to work on other projects, such as baby driver.
And probably got run around with Marvel wasting his time on Ant Man@@stefschouwenaars9562
@@stefschouwenaars9562 The World's End is underrated as hell. Good movie.
Diminishing returns. Shaun of the dead was great, hot fuzz was ok and the world's end was a bit rubbish.
@@timsyoutube6051 it’s true that worlds’ end was very mediocre in comparison, but only an “ok” for hot fuzz? Really?
The use of Adam Ant in the opening montage is only its first touch of cinematic brilliance.

Hot Fuzz is one of the best comedies I've ever seen, and have rewatched it countless times b/c it's THAT good.
Thank you for putting the ad at the end. Decided to watch the whole thing rather than skipping the as part.
Good stuff here
Agree, it takes the role that credits used to take before corporations decided we didn't need to decompress and digest what we just took in
Excellent work, as always! I've espoused my belief for years that Hot Fuzz is Wright's & Pegg's best film, but it only works if you've seen the references (especially Shaun of the Dead). It's like how The Empire Strikes Back is great, but you miss so much of it if you've not seen A New Hope.
I agree it’s important to see the first but not absolutely essential each movie should be able to stand by itself and they do. Today watching a movie is like signing a mortgage!
I don't think this is necessarily true, my whole family loved Hot Fuzz and they saw it before having seen Shaun of the Dead. I also find it the easiest to introduce to friends out of the three.
@@BooksMusicMe17 Poor word choice on my part. Hot Fuzz doesn't "only" work if you've seen Shaun of the Dead; that's the whole premise of this video. It does, however, exponentially increase the viewer's enjoyment when they get all the jokes.
Thanks for putting the ad at the end! I think that shows a lot of respect toward the viewers' time. I watched it because I want to support you that way and I hope you will always put the ads the end.
My favorite film of all time! Love how it blends action mystery and comedy together and is endlessly rewatchable
I really wish they had done the same as they had in the Spaced series DVD extras, a Homage-o-Meter, showing which movies they payed homage to at which point. I found that fascinating in Spaced because I didnt even know half of them at the time.
0:18 MISS Marple. She never married.
One thing I liked about Hot Fuzz is that it makes fun of the English countryside experience, but in a quite affectionate way that obviously shows they understand it; the fact Wright lived in Wells does not surprise me. There is too much media that either romanticises the countryside or treats everyone as stupid yokels.
I shpose
Finally seeing Dead Right getting the recognition it deserves
"My perfect Sunday" is still my go to confusing quote that no one ever gets but I laugh my ass off to 😂
Seeing this in the theater with a big group of friends is still one of my most memorable and enjoyable movie going experiences.
Pretty jealous. I never got the chance.
I still actively quote Hot Fuzz to this day. I don’t think it will ever be topped.
Narp
What I love is not so much the action homage, but the Rom Com. Underdiscussed, but there are so many bits, inviting him in for coffee, the longing glances, the taillight illuminated look as he drives off, etc.
Great video essay! I hope one day you'd consider doing one of The World's End. It's an underrated masterpiece in my opinion, it doesn't get as much attention as Shaun or Hot Fuzz, but the movie has the strongest emotional core from the three.
I didn't like World's End much the first time I watched it. Maybe because I was expecting something closer to Shaun and Hot Fuzz. But on rewatch I couldn't agree more about it's emotional core being the key why it's a different experience. It's not meant to be "funny", it's deeper than that.
I think it's a good film, but the weakest of the three, however you're absolutely right on it having the strongest emotional core.
It's strange, just as I started to feel like one of my usual short video essay movie youtubers started to slip in quality, I find a new one who takes their place and outperforms what I'd been used to. Love your videos friend!

Its so inspiring watching how edgard perfected his craft to that level, but it also tell us that he already had the idea, just not the technique!
I'd like to add that along with everything else, I live about 30 minutes away from where Hot Fuzz was filmed/set and it is an absolutely perfect characture of this part of england that only people who live here will probably truely appriciate
Edgar Wright is awesome
Damn Wright he is
@@BrendanLorenzonailed it.
Loved the bit about Edgar Wright’s evolution in editing and how well you edited showing the various cut comparisons, well done
I love the grandma kick scene in Hot Fuzz. Edgar Wright in an interview said that after filming it, he could feel one or a few clips added to the sequence would really take it home and then had to do some convincing to get the extra half day or so of filming for it. thank goodness for the dedication to his vision because he got the clips he needed and its a really great grandma kick scene
I think that something that is truly brilliant is your ability, Danny, to so perfectly articulate and communicate the choices, direction, and artistic talent of the directors. You are, by your own right, an excellent director of your chosen medium.
Danny, you're like the friend who has great taste in music that sits me down and explains why a few songs are great and convinces me to check out the whole album and I'm bettered by the whole experience. Thank you. I'm going to watch the trilogy now.
The number one thing I’d take away is that nostalgia is not always a toxic impulse but exactly what drives the people who make the best art. If anything people like Edgar Wright and Tarantino or Jon Favreau among many others are great examples of how being a total nerd for nostalgia is a great thing. I remember having chats with friends when I was a kid inspired by all the action movies we watched and how we would make action flick. To me Edgar Wright is what you get when you follow through and keep going. Anyone out there feels that spark should follow it.
It's not "nostalgia" they're nerds for it's movies and specific genres of movies, nostalgia is a meaningless word.
@@Mr.Goodkat …alright…
I got to see this film on a cold night in Wells, outdoors, projected on a screen on a field, just behind THAT Somerfield, and just a 2 minute walk from the wonderful high street 🙂. 2007/2008 ish. Happy days.
Great movie, no box ticking characters
I am getting Every Frame A Painting vibes from your channel 😃

Tony Scott made great movies. Spy Game is my favorite. It’s a great example of story-within-a-story but also very clever with its presentation and characters.
Spy Game is severely underrated, and I loathe Robert Redford.
Spy Game is excellent.
Hot fuss is filmed in Wells Somerset
It's a gorgeous place and well worth a visit
"you've got a moustache"... "I knowww!"
Topped marginally by the double out frame
The sad thing about Hot Fuzz, is that the did it so perfectly it feels like there's no point in making anything like this ever again. It could just never live up to Hot Fuzz
This is one of the most re-watchable films of all time. There's SO much detail in what's happening, what's said and what the actors are doing that you won't get it all on the first, second or even third viewing. I've seen this movie at least 20 times and I still laugh at something I missed the first 19 times I saw it. Edgar Wright was the original director hired to do the first "Antman" and I do wonder how that would have turned out. My understanding is that the studio and he couldn't see eye to eye on how to shoot it. I imagine Edgar wanted to do more of a comedy spin and the studio didn't quite want to go that far, though the version they got does have quite a bit of comedy in it.
Hot Fuzz is basically Princess Bride for cop movies. Perfectly lampoons the genre while simultaneously doing the tropes better than the source material.

Its honestly one of the greatest films of all time. When i first watched it i loved it, then i watched it again and loved it more, then again and even more and now i must've seen it a few dozen times and its arguably my favourite film ever.
"Show me" being the first line you use from Hot Fuzz, and in response to your own train of thought is some crisp editing
Hot Fuzz and Mr Robot, two of the best ways a director copy/stole from other movies but instead of plagiarizing, they made it their own.

:D
Your videos always pack in so much interesting information and detail on whatever subject they discuss.. it's absolutely one of my favorite things about how you craft them, and it makes them feel really rich and full. Bravo.
Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson are so unique and distinct you can tell within seconds of the film hands down my two favorites.
Every time I watch Hot Fuzz, I notice something different. It's amazing
The training montage early in the film is very reminiscent of Internal Affairs. Couldn’t unsee it after I realized!
The strange thing about Hot Fuzz is that I didn’t really think much of it when I first watched it. It was only after repeat viewings that I grew to really like it, then really really appreciate it.
Hot Fuzz is, for me, one of the most enjoyable films ever. I can't think of one other movie that I can just watch always.
Hot Fuzz is one of the tightest, most technically proficient, and well rounded movies of all time. Slam dunk. 10/10 for what it is.
When I was a kid I remember there was one summer where me and a friend watched hot fuzz (or its directors commentary) like every day for 2weeks straight. I think it really speaks to how packed the film is that we were still noticing new jokes even nearing the end of that spree.
It's actually amazing to me how much pastiche Wright gets away with without somehow sacrificing originality and without making you giving you that feeling of cultural exhaustion that such films often elicit. He's the best at what he does.
You skipped Hong Kong "bullet ballet" films entirely, which a lot of the US '80s/'90s action movies themselves referenced or outright stole from. Drop Zone and The Last Boy Scout are the earliest movies I can recall that borrowed liberally from John Woo, whose influence was undeniable.
"nobody tells me nothin" is a recurring mantra in my life
I have just seen this and I love the talk. One of the other things that I love about the movie is that it takes a lot of things about Gloucestershire towns and villages and the west country culture and weaves them into the film. Anyone who isnt there will get the jokes (the accent for example) but there are a lot of subtle references to the villages of the area in it-(there are actual model villages in Bourton on the Water for example) which make it funnier for those from the area.
It's absolutely awesome how Hot Fuzz is basically just a higher budget version of a previous film. Inspirational even.
just yesterday I was rewatching your video on Shaun of the Dead - and now this. What is this? Christmas?
Hot Fuzz is by far my favourite movie of all time. It's a hell of a ride. My dad showed me it when I was 15 and told me that he'd wanted to show me it since it came out but I was too young to watch it at the time. It was worth the wait and then some.
Hot Fuzz is always gonna be a classic! I was in a hotel the other night after a long day of working and a long night of drinking, i turn on the TV and it was on, great way to end the night haha :)
Its crazy how films i grew up with and adored as a kid have already become the types of films people make video essays about on end
someone else said, and i'd like to repeat, hot fuzz is simultaneously a parody and example of its genre and exceeds both at their own game. that's what makes it so special.
I don't think I go a week without a hot fuzz reference. It's definitely a top 5 for me.
“P.I.Staker…..PISSTAKER!!! So that’s Peter..Ian…Staker..” always my favourite part.
Never stop talking about Edgar Wright's films Danny!
Until he stops making them :) Which will also hopefully be never. I feel we’re due for another banger from him soon.
I love the breakdowns you do, breaking down scenes and explaining the techniques. Hot Fuzz is actually my favourite movie of all time. On a slight tangent. Just a couple of nights ago I watched Godzilla Minus One. So impressed with the movie. It's very efficient with its filmmaking, jumping into the next timeframe can be very sudden, but there is some genuinely beautiful cinematography, great score and emotive acting performances.
It always feels as if the homages to other films are really heartfelt. It is almost like fanfic, but good.
I love all of Edgars foreshadowing. Must have watched SOTD and HF a hundred times.
My fav of the Corneto Trilogy
Hot Fuzz is a masterpiece. And I do not throw that word around lightly. The script is amazing and it's perfectly cast and directed.
My wife and I saw Shaun of the Dead on a whim, knowing nothing about it, about Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, nothing. Walked out massive, instant fans. But going into it, Hot Fuzz seemed like a very different thing for him to take on. And yet... it is such an incredibly crafted film that it seems completely effortless. It walks all these genre boundaries and crossovers perfectly and entertains with every frame. It just doesn't get much better, you know?
Timothy Dalton (as Simon Skinner) makes this movie something else. So charming yet so menacing at the same time. The moment of his demise is so grotesquely hilarious as well.
Hot Fuzz is my favorite movie to watch and reference when I just want to relax and laugh. So quotable.
It was filmed in Wells in rural Somerset. We got married in the town hall depicted in the shootout (left 1st floor window) My wife says it’s not entirely inaccurate portrait of British rural policing, esp. cake for misdemeanours. The ww2 ammo dump is surprisingly close to reality. Everyone grows apples, Everyone and their mums has guns, but you never ever see them.
