It was definitely a Sears at one time. The carpeted wing is the new wing built in the 2nd half of the 1980's with the original Thalhimer's department store now Belk.. Amazing how small the mall looks now. Last time I was there 2005 when I moved. Originally lived just north in an apartment complex off of Greenridge Road then moved shortly after when I purchased a condo downtown. Used to go to a barbershop in the mall as it is near the base and a lot of military in the area and the main driver for me to move downtown. North Charleston wasn't working for me, not the lifestyle or anything else. Northwoods, while not a dead mall, just a fairly low end mall but it seems to cater to the local community and the limited income in the surrounding areas. There used to be a good record store to where I bought a lot of CD's way back, an Eckerd Drugs and other useful stores. I don't remember so many junk food places. If I was still in the area, it would be Dillards on occasion, which would be the only appealing store for my taste. Great shots and thanks for the memories. It is doubtful that I will ever return to Charleston.
Nice looking mall, I like the fact that it is not a straight through corridor. I like the different wings that branch off. I appreciate you taking the time to get a directory shot, it came out really well on the video.
And yes that was a great American cookies and in the far corner near the doors of the food court was a Dairy Queen and orange Julius. And I believe the deli was a McDonald’s back in the day
I'm glad to see Northwoods documented here! I'm a Charleston local and have done several videos of abandoned locations I have come across. I have intended to film here but I just haven't had the time. I'll have to do so at some point and hope security leaves me be. Great video!
Hi Zee! I know security walked past me several times, but they never stopped me. I think it will really depend on the guard on staff that day and if your camera is sticking out like a sore thumb. I have a osmo pocket so it looks like a small phone. Thanks for the good word and watching! Have a great day!
I think a lot of stores have changed opening procedures since COVID because of staffing issues that have occurred since 2020. A lot of stores in my area and our mall has really strange hours now and I've noticed a lot of stores will just close for the day when ever they feel like it where as you never saw that precovid.
We are lucky Northwoods has remained strong here in Charleston. The stores not opening exactly on time is probably due to the staffing and possibly it might not be worth opening so early because the only person in the mall is a guy walking around with a camera... HA! Thanks again for watching Christina!
I'm so happy you covered Northwoods! I've always wanted to take a virtual tour of this mall. You may be the first UA-camr to film the entire mall, as for some reason this place seems to get skipped over often in the retail world. Thank you for walking through the food court as well. Most UA-camrs and mall bloggers seem to always skim through them or omit them altogether. Great video and thank you! I do wish you could've shown the Crab Du Jour that's at the front entrance beside the food court though.
Thanks for the good words! I think Northwoods gets passed because it's not dead. But, there are also only a few vids on Citadel, so that makes me think that Charleston is just not a hot spot for dead mallers looking to film. I will keep updates coming on the mall since its my local. Happy new year. Make sure to check out my Northwoods Christmas EVE EVE video also. Thanks for watching.
@@charlestonpinballarcade I think you hit the nail on the head. Idk why the retail community snubs Charleston, but hey, that means more territory for you! We need a video on King St!!! I didn't realize Gucci, Tommy Bahama, and Vineyard Vines were all in downtown Charleston! I did see some stores have closed, but it's still going strong! Oh and PLEASE someday, film Mt. Pleasant Town Center. It's pretty upscale out there and I didn't know the Charleston area had a third Belk there until a few days ago! Happy New Year to you as well! :D
Grew up in this mall. I remember when there was a Woolworth, Burger King, and Taco Bell. Lots of awesome memories, for sure, back in the 80s/90s. Actually worked at Joe Muggs for a year in 2002, but haven't been back much since. Glad it's not a dead mall, as it would really make me sad if it closed.
All malls aren't dying. There are some in the Charlotte area that are thriving too, while others are struggling. I heard Northlake Mall is 30 % vacant now. If they didn't have an Apple store, they would be really be sinking. Concord Mills is packed tight every weekend
I know a lot of dead mall fans do not like Hull Property Group here in the southeast, but the way they put local pictures and faces through history on the walls is really good at making the mall a place to learn.
am seiously suprised NWM is still doing good as ever some stores i remember is 2:35 that paris store used to be a Stride Rite 3:29 that game stop used to be Babbage's 4:25 the perfume shop Was at one time Electronics Botuique 5:45 that indeed was a sears and was from the day the mall opened infact where the Bahama breeze sits at the entrance today was a huge auto repair center that had the same brick style being Charleston is thriving im sure this mall should do good for decades
Hey Andrew! Thanks for the good word. I just watched your Miami Valley vid and the guard that went way overboard on you. Sad and a bit angering to see someone that is supposed to be in control escalate in that manner and also call out "your generation". It looked like the guy was almost pushing you from exiting the building, not cool. Happy new year and keep filming!
second time seeing this mall although loads less people due to the mall just opening up and it still looks beautiful honestly puts a smile on my face to see successful mall. I saw 4 vacancies one being a kiosk, the supreme place was called supreme burger and also great video!
Hey Sunset! Thanks for watching again! ok, 4 spotted! I assume supreme burger was a local, I never heard of it before this video. I am still concerned there were not many bags in the hands of folks on the Christmas Eve-eve video I did here. Thanks again! See you soon in the next video.
@@charlestonpinballarcade hey man I absolutely am going to agree on you with that one, unfortunately not to many shoppers. All in all I hope everything is ok 2 weeks later... school has been busy. Excited for the next video
No... that sucks. I grabbed a coffee during my visit it was only a walk up window. I assume staffing and health concerns are an issue, but it wasn't the cafe type experience that it should be... Thanks for sharing! Have a great day!
@@charlestonpinballarcade It's always had that walk up window. On any given Saturday you'd see people walking the mall with Gloria Jean's in hand. This was all pre covid. I went yesterday for one last Gloria Jean's coffee, and there were more folks in the line than anywhere else in the mall.
@@charlestonpinballarcade You would hate Las Vegas, San Diego or Los Angeles to where three cars would be nothing. Interesting note. The new wing is the wing that ends at Dillard's, not Belk.

On it! This one was fun, really dig the music I found for this edit!
Burlington 100% was a sears. I remember a few years back when it got converted.
Thanks John! Yea, it was probably an impressive Sears back in the day.
That random Coke machine next to the H&M is about where the new wing was added. Is there no stop light mall entrance/exit on Rivers Avenue?
The Rivers and Ashley intersections do have lights, but I am just be a grumpy old man and whenever three cars are at a light I get cranky... HA!
