  • Part 2: • DIY Electric Longboard...
    After being inspired by folks with fancy electric skateboards I decided to take a shot at building one rather than paying $1000+ on an e-board or expensive DIY e-board kit.
    Top Speed fresh off the charger = 42kmh / 26.25mph.
    Materials and cost in USD:
    -Pulleys+belt -5mm HTD pitch, 9mm wide - $~35
    ---Big Pulley part #: A 6L25-030SF0908
    ---Small Pulley part#: A 6A25M014DF0906
    ---Belt Part #: A 6R25M057090
    -Motor: SK3 5055-320 - $46
    -Radio+receiver: Quanum 2.4Ghz 3ch Pistol Grip - $22
    -Esc - HobbyKing 120A Boat ESC - $47ish
    Batteries: Turnigy 5000mAh 3S 20C $22ea.
    Battery box $5
    -Longboard/ Skateboard - $Varies
    -Misc: Wire, stainless hardware, deans connectors, solder, aluminum plate, balance leads - $~40
    -Shipping: I live in Canada - All electronics came together $~30cad from HobbyKing + $40cad. ish duty fee. Pulleys/belt $~35cad shipping.
    Shipping for the belt and pulleys was very high so I recommend you order a few belts and possibly different gear ratio combinations to save on extra future shipping charges.
    Motor/Esc/radio came from HobbyKing.
    Purchasing from hobbyking - If you stay on the same page for a few minutes it'll usually prompt you a cheaper price by a couple $$ for 2 or 3 items, start with the more expensive parts then add cheaper parts after.
    Belt/Pulleys came from sdp-si - IMO they have the best selection. I couldn't find another retailer as complete as these guys. Expensive shipping though.

    Nice build !
    I'm building mine too, got the same quanum tx & rx. How did you plugged it ? throttle is CH1 right ?
    My Motor & ESC would not start and keep beeping unless I plug the ESC signal on the CH3, and use the tiny CH3 button as the throttle lol. It's really weird it does not detect anything else than ch3, did you have this problem ?

    • @TahitianRider
      @TahitianRider 8 років тому

      +Tahitian Rider Ok so I figured that ch 2 is the throtlle, and that neutral point is actullay all the way to the front (not in the middle) with throttle trim turn full to the right too. Is there a way to change that on the radio ? it is weird to have to push your finger all up front against the spring to be at zero throttle lol

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      +Tahitian Rider I have my esc plugged into ch2 on the receiver. Dial back the throttle trim knob, it should be somewhere in the middle. All the way forward is like full throttle cruise control. Turn it on and dial it back until the wheels stop. Hope that helps. Cheers

    • @TahitianRider
      @TahitianRider 8 років тому

      +Eric B Thanks for your help :) I got the point of finding where the wheel stop and start using the throttle trim. But on my radio, to have the wheel at zero throttle, I have to be at one end of the thottle stick, I can't have it in the middle neutral position, I'm not sure if that is clear... reverse won't be possible for example, but maybe it is because of my ESC that needs to be programmed for that.

    I was asking how the connectors call which you need from the 3 motor wires to connect it to the ecs, because the boat esc hasn't any connectors standard?

    • @EricFB

      Thanks! The esc just has wires with no connections on them, those must be soldered on. The motor comes with banana jack style connectors. Hope that answers your question,

    hey eric, great build. I'm currently ordering all my parts to make my own board with two 280kv sk3's. just wondering do you have the exact names or part numbers to the gears you used, since I'm using a very similar motor to you i could proberly get away with using the same gears/ belt. is there any chance you can help me out, spd/si's website is kind of confusing. thanks so much in advance

      oxy acetylene torch with filler rod. It held very well. I did however end up re-doing with with 1/4" aluminum plate from metalsupermarkets.com. The plate I used in the video kept bending. 1/4" plate is solid like a rock.

    Hi Eric! i think i ordered the same gear set, but i noticed that the smallest gear didn't fit the shaft of my motor, did you have the same issue or did i just ordered the wrong gear piece? Love your work man !

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      Thanks man. If it's tight check to make sure the set screw is backed off enough. If the pulley is way too small you could try to drill it out. Make sure the shaft size and bore of the pulley are the same. Sounds obvious but something might have been packaged wrong assuming you ordered the correct pulley/motor.

    Isn't it a problem that your esc is not being cooled by water? Doesn't it become like very very hot?

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      Surprisingly it doesn't get that hot at all. My guess is that a boats pulls a lot more current turning a prop in water. The motor doesn't really have to work that hard on an e-board if it's geared properly, and only really pulls a lot of current under acceleration. I've actually had it cool down from 115f to 105f while cruising at 30kmh on flat.

    Thanks

    • @EricFB

      They were cheap. Also, I don't honestly think a battery with a higher c rating would do much for it anyway. Unless you want to do 100kmh I see it as a waste of beer money.

    you should extend esc motor cables and shorten batt esc cables otherwise you may ruin esc with too long cables

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      I see what you're getting at, and I've never put an amp clamp on the wires to see how much current the esc actually pulls, but based on how much heat it generates I don't suspect much, so i'm not that worried.

      +Matthew Wiese Yes, most esc's have brakes. They are pretty light though since it's a marine esc, which isn't really a bad thing at speed. They are about as efficient as foot braking. If you want strong brakes go with a bulkier car/truck esc.

    Are you having problems with belt tension?

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      +Adam Keely I was, It was slipping on the drive pulley so I mounted two skate board bearings together as an idler pulley to take up the slack in the belt. Put the idler road side/slack side of the belt. It helped A LOT. In my opinion this is a better idea than just going crazy tight as it also wraps the belt around more of the pulley. Just be careful not to get lube on the belt from the bearings.

    Taking in consideration the research, time consumed, work involved and money spend, and aside of the fact that is a satisfaction to make something like this on your own and learn to do it or customize the skateboard to your needs, Do you think is worth it versus buying a commercially available electric longboard such as the evolve bamboo or boosted? thanks for any objective answer!

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому +3

      +marzbite I dont know what your time is worth but in my opinion: Boosted boards are very reliable (dont know about the others). They also cost $2000 for the top model. Very expensive for a toy, very cheep for a vehicle. I am always tinkering around and have been longboarding for about 7 years. Seeing a project come together and be successful after doing the research is a big part of the fun for me. And In a sense I probably saved an additional $50 by working on this a couple evenings by staying in haha!
      Bought:
      - Super easy
      - Might come with a Warranty?
      - Fun right away
      - Generic deck (unless boosted board)
      - Proprietary electronics
      - Have to deal with manufacturer for diag. help.
      - Some parts might be hard to get to replace
      - What if the company goes bankrupt next year?
      Built:
      - Time consuming: Fun for some - Frustrating for others
      - Your preferred deck
      - If you buy known electronics your local hobby shop could help with future diag.
      - Can save you $ if you already have tooling and don't use a diy kit
      - Confidence in knowing where every part came from, parts easily replaced/improved
      - Easy diag. - You built it - you should know the weak points.
      - It's yours!
      - Your wife/gf will love you for not blowing all the vacation $ on a skateboard.

      @EricFB  8 років тому +1

      +Adrien BLACHUT Its still pretty miserable out where I live so no full test yet, I took it out for a quick rip about a week ago to see how it worked and it had really good power. Accelerated hard even at speed. ESC was slightly warm to the touch after my 10min ride - which I think is pretty decent, most esc's are safe up to 185-190F. I'll give an update when the weather is nicer. Salty roads are bad for electronics.

    Nice Video 👍 does the transmitter have a break funktion?

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      +German FPV Thx. Yes, the transmitter does throttle and brake/reverse. It works just like any entry lvl. 3ch radio. If you want "good" brakes however I wouldn't recommend the esc in the video. Its very light, about as efficient as foot braking.

    Would a 350kv motor be able to pull a 60kg rider?

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      +Finlay Sambrook Smith If you're looking at the sk3 350kv motor I wouldnt recomend it. 5mm shaft will limit drive pulley choices, and it's only meant to work on 4/5 cell = 19v. 6 cell is best = 22v.

    Why so much discussion about VESC and ESC? Does it really matter? I mean, the difference between them is so freaking big to worth the double priced VESC?

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      As with anything there will always be a more expensive way of doing something and someone to justify it. I personally didn't care to invest too much money into an unknown project. The way I see it a big long spec sheet won't make your board more fun to ride, so I personally don't care about all the features, and any esc that supports lipos will have a low voltage cutoff which is all you really need. Regen braking is nice but you'll get that with a car/ truck esc as well as strong brakes.

      Is it possible to brake with boat esc?

    • @Sirfreelancealot
      @Sirfreelancealot 8 років тому

      Yes, it is.

    • @leandrodiasteixeira8392
      @leandrodiasteixeira8392 8 років тому

      So, tell me how, because I bought the same esc and motor, I change the settings to forward, reverse and brake, I increased the reverse to 75% and I could not brake even in a low inclination street!!

    • @Sirfreelancealot
      @Sirfreelancealot 8 років тому

      Boat esc's have weaker breaks most the time, because its unnecessary to have a strong one in a boat. but if the break can slow you down enough to put your foot down to break then its fine. But you can also try to make a physical break that will stop your back wheel.

      +Jack V Range Haven't done a top speed pass or really test for range yet. I can tell you it'll do 22mph at 2/3 throttle. If I had to guess i'd say 27-29mph, but will confirm later on.

    Do you need to do all that balancing thing if you only have one 5000mah battery?

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      +Finlay Sambrook Smith Nope. But by connecting two 5000mah 3s batteries in series i've basically made a 6s battery for $40. Another option would be to buy an adapter(hobby king product id: T-Twins) or charge them separately.

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      The esc plugs into the receiver to power it.

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      ***** Using my setup, the short answer is no. A 4s battery will only have 14.8 volts. Depending on your motor choice, it may not even work on that voltage. That said there may be a motor/esc/gearing combo out there that will work fine on that battery.

    if your batteries are connected in series will you have to disconnect the two batteries from each other when you want to charge them?

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      Nope, I hard wired mine together. Since it gets charged after every ride I wanted it to be as simple and possible. Just keep in mind two 3s batteries in series = 6s battery so it will need to be charged on the 6s setting.

    • @Hallworks
      @Hallworks 8 років тому

      +Eric B would you need to buy a 3s to 6s cable to charge them or can you charge each battery off their own 3s cable

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      If they are hard wired you need to treat them as a 6s, so you'll have to modify your balance lead as mentioned in the video, once it's done it's hassle free. Hobbyking sells a dual 3s to single 6s balance lead adapter if you dont want to make your own.

    hi eric, nice video.
    I have the same wheels which I recognize as the abec 11 flashbacks. and I wanted to know if you drilled through the rubber (the green part) and if you did so, is it stable or does it vibrate? should I buy new wheels for my built? cause normally people do it with wheels that have holes already on them like orangutangs or abec flashbacks or they drill through hard plastic.
    thanks

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB  8 років тому

      Thanks man. Abec 11 Big zigs, 72mm. I drilled through the urethane because i'm cheep and didn't want to spend hard earned cash on wheels specific to this build. I have not had any problems/ vibration. I also only ended up using two bolts with locknuts and have had no problems. When you put the bolts through the wheel they are pretty tight/secure in the urethane.
