I been studying in Philippines for six years now , I came here in 2012 and now this October I will be going back . I haven't left Philippines since then , I never went back home for vacation and now when I go back I will be taking the most great great memories from here , the people's kindness and friendship is something that I will cherish forever . That is why I am glad I reviewed my History/ Araling Panlipunan/ Hekasi subject because I realized that I should know everything, well, not really everything but most of the important *facts* about my country, The Philippines. You know, it is quite a shame if there are foreigners who are just here for a couple of years but they have more knowledge about the country than I do. So if there is someone who will approach me and ask something I get to answer them right away. And yeah, learning history is useful. For me, it is also a way in welcoming foreign guests :)

True, Intramuros is in Manila and all the main historical locations from Spain but 90% of Manileños are blind and barely aware of their connections to Spain. It was disappointing when I went. I’m Filipino but I was raised in California and studied in Spain.. so visiting my family in Manila/Makati/Parañaque was a big eye opener especially with the ignorance out there about Spanish heritage. It’s like the Americans erased everything after WW2

The best schools are in the provinces where they don’t declare no classes because of heavy rains. I went to university in my hometown and they only declared no classes because of typhoon was 2 days in 4 years and that’s when it’s signal no. 4. And we don’t have malls around so students aren’t distracted.
Mapua don’t need to worry about no classes....the professor will finished the Syllabus of that semester no matter how. Students are used to cram. Pressure is the normal.

Not many Filipinos are not aware of some Spanish culture which influenced the Filipino culture due to the colonization of the Americans who wanted Filipinos to forget their Spanish-influences practices. But I think Filipinos are still doing Spanish influenced practices subconsciously despite of the Americanization.

Hello,, it was the Spaniards who named the islands after KING PHILIP II of Spain in 1542 thus the name PHILIPPINES--- Pilipinas-----------these islands were part of the Spanish empire for 400 years,the Catholic Faith,Spanish last names.....thank GOD the Filipinos never gave up their local dialect Waray,Bisaya,Ilocano,Ilonngo,Capangpangan,Panggalatok etc....but we did adapt a lot of Spanish words--ex:--trabajo,gwapa,buena,maldito etc...... Filipino food some are mixture of local and Spanish recipe....arrozcaldo,paella,lengua de gatu,leche flan to name just a few these are Filipino yet influenced by Spain.

It’s one thing to love your alma mater, but it’s entirely a different thing to look at the reality of education in the Philippines. I’m a product of 2 technical schools in PI, from high school to college. But when I looked back at what we had in our labs and compare them with what they have here in University of Toronto, or York or McMaster ( 3 schools I had a chance to visit), that comment made by the Spanish lady in this video abt Mapua’s lab being at the high school level made sense. It’s abt time we recognize that Philippine education standard is quite low and needed to be upgraded, especially in the field of Science and Technology, if we hope to compete in the international arena.

Well.... technically the name is Spanish but the recipe itself is native. When the Spaniards arrived here they found the Filipinos cooking something in a style similar to theirs and proceeded to give this cooking style a Spanish name - Adobo (comes from Adobar I think?). Filipinos used Adobo to flavor and preserve a dish (hence the usage of vinegar and soy sauce) and as mentioned by the Spanish lady in the vid, the Spanish also used it to "preserve" (the word was atleast mentioned). If our education system, place languages like Spanish and Mandarin, we can be one of the rare countries who could speak to more than 2 billion people. It’s one thing to love your alma mater, but it’s entirely a different thing to look at the reality of education in the Philippines. I’m a product of 2 technical schools in PI, from high school to college. But when I looked back at what we had in our labs and compare them with what they have here in University of Toronto, or York or McMaster ( 3 schools I had a chance to visit), that comment made by the Spanish lady in this video abt Mapua’s lab being at the high school level made sense. It’s abt time we recognize that Philippine education standard is quite low and needed to be upgraded, especially in the field of Science and Technology, if we hope to compete in the international arena.

Sad that they only allow 6 months. My uni here in the US offer 1 year programs studying abroad. I only opted for 6 months in France because it's so expensive lol It cost $20k to study for 6 months, I think 30k for a year.

Right?! I cringed when they were genuinely surprised that Adobo and Afritada were Spanish spices/dishes.
Well.... technically the name is Spanish but the recipe itself is native. When the Spaniards arrived here they found the Filipinos cooking something in a style similar to theirs and proceeded to give this cooking style a Spanish name - Adobo (comes from Adobar I think?). Filipinos used Adobo to flavor and preserve a dish (hence the usage of vinegar and soy sauce) and as mentioned by the Spanish lady in the vid, the Spanish also used it to "preserve" (the word was atleast mentioned). *Afritada* is a Spanish style of cooking that fries the meat, then adds tomato paste, garlic, onions, carrots, potatoes, peas, etc. Most of it's ingredients came from the Americas(through Spanish colonies), and the rest are from the Middle east and South Asia, and the Mediterranean. None of the ingredients originated from Malacca.

I was first year in college during 1966, and we still have spanish subject in 2 semesters.
its a pity that Spanish is no longer offered as an elective course. during my days in UST, it was mandatory for us to have 12 units. If our education system, place languages like Spanish and Mandarin, we can be one of the rare countries who could speak to more than 2 billion people. I worked in IT and was surprised and sad to learn that it was difficult to hire Spanish speaking locals
It was only changed since 1986 EDSA revolution. Cory's government removed Spanish language as an elective course. Even the 1986 constitution has not recognized or promoted the Spanish language.
