We know strong performances don't necessarily guarantee an F1 seat. Piastri is the obvious standout here. Piastri dominated his rookie campaign yet Zhou (who was in his third F2 season) got promoted due to the massive financial backing. Sargeant didn't have a good F2 campaign and got promoted over Drugovich who dominated that season. Pourchaire is an interesting one, he obviously won the F2 championship but in my opinion, there are probably 3 drivers who are quicker than him but suffered very bad luck (Doohan, Vesti and Bearman). The midfield/backmarkers who are often the ones that promote young drivers are often thinking about more than who is the quicker driver. I mean look at HASS, does it matter if a driver is two-tenths quicker? Not really, but of course that is significant for Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren (I'd say Aston Martin as well but we all know the situation there). F1 is a political game and it's hard to see it changing anytime soon.

I think Nyck de Vries's debut at Monza was a bit of an exception because Monza suited Williams's car particularly well and isn't a very physically-demanding track. If de Vries had made his debut 2 weeks later in Singapore instead, he probably would've struggled more. I think the low influx of rookies is partly because there's barely anyone in F1 at the moment who's underperforming enough to warrant replacing them with a rookie (barring nepobaby Lance Stroll). The longevity of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton doesn't help either.

I’m a firm believer that F2 should develop a similar situation that 250 Supercross has. You get a chance to defend your title before moving up as biggest complaint is “ weaken field” since you’re always moving the goal post. Everyone wants to be champion but if you can’t battle the champion than it’s harder to judge quality of drivers. Biggest complaint about De Vries championship was who the vice champion was that season vice champion. Becoming the F2 champion is almost a punishment to a certain degree

Potential new 2025 drivers would be Ollie bearmann to replace magnussen. Pourchaire replacing Zhou. Lawson to alpha tauri. If sargeant does not perform, either be drugovich, vesti or possibly kimi antonelli

You also have to look at the common denominator of who is missing out. Generally, it's been the third-year champions. Drugovich might have dominated, but he had to wait for Piastri, Schumacher, Schwartzman, Illot, Tsunoda, Zhou and Mazepin to leave before he could; Pourchaire was not convincing at ALL, clearly outdriven by Vesti and Doohan and relying on bad luck striking those two out.
As for who has made it, recently: Schumacher and Piastri as F2 champions (though arguably a curse for the former as he was thrown into the toxic shitshow that was Haas), Mazepin and Zhou for money, and Tsunoda and Sargeant as part of Driver Academy progression.
Note for all the criticism that Sargeant was "only" 4th in F2, he was only one point behind his teammate, Liam Lawson, in what was Sargeant's rookie F2 year and Lawson's second. Sargeant was oringally intended to do a second year.

    1. People already set too much high standards nowadays for F2 rookies when they just came into F1, they need some time to adjust.
    2. You won't easily to get into F1 with pure talent, unless u got a great 'background' and politics help (even some F1 legends have to pay the seat or got some good background to get into F1)
    3. F1 now doesn't give a shit about adding new team, only buyouts even in different timeline F1 not gonna be greedy anymore. They still gonna bring experience drivers first rather then bring all rookies especially because of budget cap (because rookies will made some mistake and will crash a lot, that's not gonna help the team)
Is F2 now became a failure talent pipeline for F1? Not yet, but they do need find a solution asap before it's too late. Other wise those F2 drivers rather want to get other series like SF, Indycar or endurance series like IMSA/WEC (but if they went it,possibility of return to F1 will get lower). It's not bad if u became a reserve driver for the and get paid more money. But there's not point just wait Free Practice session to show it nothing but only helping the team gaining data for their main drivers. (Drugovich is literally the example)

I think it’s a difficult one. Teams obviously want the money rather than the talent unless they are on one of a kind. I don’t blame them at all. And with young drivers who are insanely talented in Russell piastri Lando Leclerc and max, it’s so tough to live up to their junior categories especially Leclerc and max. If teams don’t see that level of talent, the drivers with the money get promoted. We haven’t seen any recent champions or even drivers in f2 who deserve it hugely. F2 drivers at the moment are poor. Bearman has great potential but is nothing compared to piastri for example. Drugovich should get a chance but had no competition. Pourchaire is good but nothing special. Vesti once again similar to pourchaire. So pretty much, we need someone special to get the seat. Also it’s not worth it if a team has Sargent for example, not amazing but definitely better for 2024 than a rookie

this is true, and I think we are about to see it with Antonelli promoting to F2, he is one of a kind and I'm pretty sure that by 2026 he'll be in f1

I don't know man, I think he might be in F1 in 2025 already if I can believe the hype. I think he has a good shot at winning F2 in his rookie year. After that, I think he might replace Logan at Williams, or depending on the level of dominance IF he wins the championship in his rookie year, he might drive for Mercedes in 2025? That latter would be a bold move by Toto though... @@GTpato

@@Real_ghostboi it really depends on how Kimi performs this rookie season, if he gets third or higher in the standings he might go straight to f1

In my opinion, a part of the problem is that there was a mass entry a few years ago, and that the drivers are not at the point of retirement look at how many came in between 2016 and 2019+ those that came in a little before that the problem in my opinion is that there’s so many drivers on the grid that are in their 20s going into their 30s that are not wanting to retire.
There is not that age balance that once was for a long time, I recall it being older drivers retiring, and then the young ones coming in and it was a cycle, but when there was a mass amount of young drivers that came in, it disrupted the flow for the younger drivers to get in with these talents that are in their 20s that are racing currently, Formula One there’s only maybe few that could risk being replaced, but many are signing lengthy contract extensions or at least they’re signing for multiple years now.
My firm belief is that part of the problem is that the cycle got broken when so many young drivers came into Formula One that there wasn’t that older generation retiring to allow young ones to come in because the grid was and still is relatively young.
Yes there’s some older drivers that probably should look at retirement in the coming years but unfortunately in my opinion, unless there’s a steady turnout of someone leaving the sport every 2 to 3 years, for majority of the F2 champions, more than one person would have to leave f1 in order for the F2 champions to step up in a more rapid rate.
One thing that I think would really help is if they developed the F2 cars more frequently and kept them more on power with the Formula One cars.
And even if they were to do a Support race, using one of the previous years cars with the reserve drivers after the Sunday, Grand Prix or even on historic tracks when Formula One isn’t racing, if each team could pull out the car from last year, throw the reserve driver in and test them around to historic race track the teams would see what these drivers could do with the machinery and have a better idea on who they could promote plus it would really be interesting to see some more of the historic tracks that it seems like we’re going to lose in favour of street tracks.
The reality is there’s not enough turnaround right now in Formula One there’s not enough people leaving there’s not enough people retiring plus there’s a regulation change coming up so the teams are gonna want experience for that to ensure that they’re setting up for the best possible success really and truly it’s just not a good time to win the F2 championship unfortunately
Because of the lack of turnover rate Formula One drivers that were retired, have come out retirement and gotten seats back because of their experience which you cannot deny.
In my opinion we need something in between formula 2 and formula one because the formula 2 cars are not developed at the same rate as a Formula 1 car, they’re not individually designed it’s not a case for the drivers really have as much so to speak which the teams go because of the formula two operates I feel like there needs to be a steppingstone in between formula 2 and Formula 1.
I wish that they would change the name of F1 Academy to a female racing series and then make F1 Academy the step up from F2 the previous years cars for the teams for the reserve drivers or something like that, or give all the teams a junior team basically for a in my opinion what would be the Formula 1 Academy because it would be the Academy to train and prepare drivers actually step into Formula 1 by giving them experience in the actual Formula One cars even if they are year or two updated, it would still be better for them and the teams to get a good look at them.
As hard as it is, I don’t see any of the female drivers currently in the joke that is F1 Academy ever making it to Formula One so change that to something related FF4 something like that female formula.
Call it something more suited to what it is and then make an F1 Academy that is actually for those that did super well in formula 2 or won the championship whether they’re driving a previous year or two years back car of one of the F1 teams that its own separate cost cap and find out who actually has the talent not to mention a few of the F1 drivers that are struggling could easily be bounced down to that series for trial run one of the drivers on the previous car.
In my opinion that’s the easiest way to fix. This is going to be to change the name of F1 Academy to something to do with females because that’s what’s racing in the series and make a spec for the previous year for each team and make that F1 Academy where it’s actually the champions from F2 or drivers that the teams really want to test and find out if they can handle their machinery so that then it’s going to be more clear as to who actually belongs and the drivers can get experience in the Formula One cars.

Money that’s all quite literally the only reason. Why the Indycar series has a better system the champion gets an Indycar ride for c amount of races and an Indy 500 entry and p2 and p3 get Indy tests
