Betrayal is an ABC Movie of the Week directed by Gordon Hessler and starring Amanda Blake and Tisha Sterling, adapted from the novel "Only Couples Need Apply" by Doris Miles Disney. The movie is a lost gem that never made the splash that it deserved. Part of the reason is the absence of formula ABC used to cast their television movies. Betrayal does not have a motley mix of actors but it is good nonetheless.
Plot
Helen Mercer, a wealthy elderly widow, hires a young woman, Gretchen Addison, as her secretary. Mercer, nicknamed "Deadeye" after having shot her criminal handyman, is lonely, and her ad for a secretary is as much about companionship as business. Little does she suspect, though, that the woman and her boyfriend Jay are criminals on the run after a killing, who target elderly women to extort them. The partners plan to make Mercer their next victim, killing her and stealing her money. Addison, however, grows to admire Mercer, and decides she needs to change her ways.
I vividly remember my family and I watching this when it first aired. I would have been 11 years old at the time. TV movies were fantastic during that era, full of suspense, horror, mystery.
Tisha Sterling was the daughter of actress Ann Sothern and actor Robert Sterling.
I didn't know she was the daughter of famous parents! Thanks for pointing that out. Memories...we hear that so much and I agree so many of these movies I was just a kid and have vivid memories of watching many of them, distinct memories! You only need to read the comments to see how many people have the same sort of experience watching the Movie of the Week! Thanks for your comments!!

This actress, Tisha Sterling, gives me Olivia Newton-John vibes.

Our pleasure!😗
Great 😊 movie 🎥 Amanda Blake was one of my all time favourite western actors. She played a really good role in this one.
I agree Amanda Blake was terrific in this! Let's spread the word!
Damn this film was so good! The ending was rather daff though, I thought. I was certainly on the edge of my seat though - and I haven’t been, for a long time!
Yeah, this one is a favorite of mine! Underrated and under viewed! A hidden gem.😉
There was a movie of the week called The Seeding Of Sarah Burns….I haven’t been able to find a copy anywhere…it’s a very rare movie of the week…if anyone has any info……
It is a tough one to find. I'm not sure if it was ever released on VHS . We'll have to take a look to see. I've never seem it. Great title!. Keep you posted. Thanks for the recommendation!
"The Seeding of Sarah Burns" remains unavailable for home viewing. It was never released on VHS and does not appear on any streaming services even those that carry hard to find films. The could be complications with copyright or demand for the film doesn't warrant a release. Every few months we check ti see if some of the titles that we haven't been able to locate are tied up with copyright issues. We'll add this one to the list and, keep you posted. Our goal is to post all the network made for television movies from this period in high definition digital. so these movies are accessible to audiences...they are historical artifacts and treasures of television. It's a shame that some titles were never issued on home release.
Good movie. Terrible ending.
That seems to be the consensus. Well put! (I didn't love the ending but I'm im the minority when I say it didn't irk me like it did most viewers who just found it dis-satisfying altogether.🥲
