@@dilldowschwagginz2674 I don't think that is true. the engineers at SpaceX don't hold a candle to the NASA guys because they have the wrong kind of leadership. A lot of the old time guys have left or been fired by SpaceX. That's because Musk operates by his own set of rules, which are frankly not good engineering!

Have they been able to build a simulator for the FDS? I hope they had schematics and code for it still available. If so they should be able to simulate it in software. Then they could try to reproduce the glitch by deliberately corrupting memory in the simulation. Once they could do that they could try simulated solutions on earth safely and quickly before trying anything promising on Voyager. This is the way I'd go, at least. I hope they've been trying something like this or perhaps better.

The serial number on the memory card was 003 so maybe they have one on earth.
If that is true for all other hardware they should be able to test it out.
But bit errors on memory is easy to find just by looking at the contents and checksums, the problem is how to load new software without putting that on a bad memory and brick it all.
My guess is that the software is located in the cpu unit and not the memory card.
When I was building my first computer there was 16KB static ram for the system software and dynamic ram on the memory board.
The have probably a failsafe system on proms too just in case of a completely mess up.

How much radiation has the system already had to deal with? And how much was it expected to survive when it was made? Should we be amazed it has done what it has so far? And just how much better can we make stuff hardened against radiation damage now, and what does that bodes for other ventures?

I think people doing the animations have no clue what they're doing, let alone have any understanding of how things actually work. I wouldn't doubt they were born 20 years after the Voyagers launched. As for the NASA images, they're probably just stock photos and film footage. The rest of the graphics have no bearing on this -- like the woman looking at a holographic image of text characters flowing top down (I did that in my Turbo Pascal programming class way back in college -- might look cool, but has no practical use).

It is astonishing that Voyager is still functioning given the technology of the 70's and its age. It would be so good to hear what Voyager what kind of data are being returned. It would be good to know how the faulty memory is being addressed. Sadly, the trite voice over offers little actual information.
Which direction is it going? Why was this direction chosen? What data gathering technologies were fitted? What is the most significant discovery it has made? Is there a substantive different between space at 1 billion miles and 15 billion miles?

My idea so I get to name it! What I mean is, no one has claimed it so I'm officially calling, "Dibs." Voyager 1 is now in the, "Milky Way's interstellar time" or "Mikey's Time."
"V-ger's" message has sped up now that it's outside our Sun's, "Time Bubble," or, "Terran Time." It will be faster, still, when "V-ger" sends a message from beyond the Milky Way's time bubble. Then there's Outside the Local Group time bubble. So on and so on until we get outside any influence and into the, "True Interstellar Time Standard." Or, "T.I..." ;-P
Now that "V-ger" is outside our Sun's reach, in interstellar space, it's now in the Milky Way's faster moving, Interstellar Time or "Mikey's Time." This can be proven by turning off everything except its clock and transmitter. Have "V-ger" read time for as long as possible. They WILL show the flow of time speeds up the further away you get from any celestial bodies. Until you reach the Milky Way's time standard or "Mikey's Time."
•Our sun's time bubble: "Terran Time" we know and have measured. In a lifetime, our head is one second younger than our feet.
•Milky Way's time bubble or "Mikey's Time." The rate/flow of TIME outside any influence but within the Milky Way: We just got there and are still figuring what the difference is. I'd say time will increase in speed, now and until V-ger is outside the Ort cloud.
•Local Group's time bubble or the rate/flow of time outside of any influence but within the Local Group: Name still open and unknown. Wild guess .08 P-22% to a couple seconds faster, maybe. Used just for reference. You know what I mean.
•Outside any influence in the, "True Interstellar Time Standard." (or T.I...) ;-P This name is NOT up for grabs. The rate/flow of time is fastest here. (Time flows fastest here so it's best to use a motor boat and hold tight. Always applies when you're in T.I....) ;-P
A minute is a minute in all. It's the rate/flow I'm talking about. Heck, rivers of time flowing differently might explain dark energy and dark matter. Difference in time could explain great attractor, too. Fun to think about, isn't it? Anyway, the "Milky Way's Interstellar Time Standard," will be known as, "Mikey's Time."
Pass it on, please and thank you.
