    Do you prefer using an indoor or outdoor antenna?

    • @jensotube
      @jensotube 2 роки тому +2

      I prefer an outdoor antenna. Mine has a motorized rotator so I can move it to any direction. Back when I had Dish, it came in handy during bad weather when the satellite dish would lose reception.

      @@jensotube Very nice! We can imagine that'd make it helpful when dealing with bad weather. How many channels can you pick up with it?

    I have a Mohu 60 and was surprised on how well it worked over the cheap $4 antenna I purchased at the Dollar Store. I located the antenna in the same spot as the $4 antenna which picked up 27 channels and now the Mohu picks up 33 channels. The cheaper antenna had problems with several stations but the Mohu cleared them up.

    Did you picked up the Iowa stations? Thanks for the info, I'm planning on purchasing the 65 mile ranged mohu antenna.

    Great video on OTA antennas. I live in suburb of Chicago. I did add an amplifier to boost my signals a little more which then gives me 57 channels ( few are duplicates on other subchannels). Even though I have my antenna indoors near a window, I do find at times that windy days and storms make receptions on a few channels kick in and out of reception. But majority of the time I get all 57 digital channels rock solid reception. take care.

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  2 роки тому +3

      We know you've mentioned that in the past, and getting ~ 60 channels via OTA is solid for sure. :)

    Great video, guys! I would add that if you buy a Mohu Leaf knockoff for a much cheaper price, it's going to be much less effective, only giving you a couple channels at best. I speak from experience. Also, if your TV is more than 4-5 years old, the tuner won't be as up to date as the newer models. Using the same antenna and same location, I went from three channels on my 2012 Panasonic LED TV to 48 channels on my 2021 LG TV. And I know I talk too much, but it was nice to see a brief shout out for the Mohu Arc! I'm sure they're not as effective as the Leaf, but I live in a high-rise apartment building in the city (Pittsburgh) and I use an arc, it sits on a bookshelf below my TV and I have Crystal clear, hi-def channels for free. I pay $15 a month for my three streaming services and that's it. 🙂✌️

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  2 роки тому +2

      Yea, we'd imagine that a knockoff wouldn't be as good. :) Good point on the channels, and that's quite the increase in what you can get! Our main TV is a bit on the older side, likely 8-10 years old but it still works well. We've used an Arc for a number of years and it does still work well for us, but the Leaf did net us about ~ ten additional channels.

    • @GoMohu
      @GoMohu 2 роки тому +2

      Yes! Thank you for the love, and we agree, you definitely get what you pay for. We've heard countless times people calling in that they tried a cheap antenna and just assumed nothing would work for them, which is NOT the case!

    Great Video! I really want to try this out and see if I can get rid of this super high cable bill. It's Ridiculous! Do I have to have a Fire TV or Roku? Can it be used with just a regular tv?

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  2 роки тому +4

      Thanks! No, you don't need a Fire or Roku device and you can use it on pretty much any TV. They're super simple to set up and use. :)

      Yes. You just screw it into the antenna connector on the side or back of the TV.

    I have two indoor OTA antennas...an unamplified Channel Master Flatenna, and an amplified Antenna Direct Clearstream Flex...both of them are good. Antenna Direct even has an app that you can use with your phone to allow you to pinpoint exactly where the closest tower is, so you'll know which side of the wall to place the antenna. Once you give your address, you can then rotate your phone as a compass until an arrow points over the closest tower...it worked.

    Ya know, you two are a wealth of information! We switched to FuboTV about 2 years ago and now they're upping their rates $5 and hitting us with a $10.99 extra charge for a regional sports lineup that we'll NEVER watch! We don't watch any sports at all due to the social political crap ruining the sport. We're on the cheapest plan, but it'll be over $100 next month with what they're tacking on. I'm on a 7-day trial of Frndly TV and we like it, but still need local news. Getting an antenna and $10.99 a month for Frndly TV plus all the free streaming channels on our Roku box will save us plenty of money! I'm going to research more on the Mohu antenna and others and see what works for us. I did the Antennas Direct search that showed we have a long list of STRONG signaled channels coming from the Seattle area to us living in Tacoma (31.4mi). Thanks!

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  Рік тому +1

      Glad to be of assistance! Yea, we're not fans of that price increase....especially for people who don't want/need the RSNs. In Tacoma you should have plenty of channels available through an over-the-air antenna. Enjoy those savings!

    I have a channel master 4221 on the roof, as I'm 61 miles from the towers. There are a couple of channels I miss, but I do get full network coverage from three markets. My former cable company levies $22.40 just for "broadcast TV surcharge." I now get those local channels for free, plus a few cable doesn't carry.

    It's probably not a good idea to have the antenna power plugged into the TV itself for power. Not only for reception reasons but if your TV is off the antenna is off. Therefore, it can "smart sense" the input as most TV's do nowadays. For this reason and many more, you should use the rated brick and hopefully still comes with and plug into a wall unless completely unable. Convenience is not reason enough!

      You'd need a standalone DVR for that. Amazon has one that you can pair with Fire devices, or there are several you can pair with Roku. Depending on what you watch you *might* find that going with an on-demand service like Peacock or Hulu could be cheaper.

      I connect my antenna to a Tablo box which serves as a DVR and also puts the antenna signal on my wifi network so every tv in our house can get a signal from one antenna.

      Did you try putting your antenna in different locations? If so, and it still didn’t get many channels, you might be better off with an outdoor antenna. Try an antenna recommendation from Tyler the Antenna man on his website. He might be able to recommend one that would work for you.

    • @FrugalRules
      @FrugalRules  2 роки тому +3

      We'd echo Derek. If you've tried different locations and not had luck you might be better off with an outdoor option. Also seconded on Tyler the Antenna Man - he knows his stuff.

      @derekvallem Also he should test the antenna with and without the amplifier. In some cases reception is better without the amplifier.

      We said at the beginning of the video that they sent us an antenna for free to test. There was no payment. We've also personally used their antennas for nearly a decade, which we've mentioned in numerous videos. If you think you can do it better, go for it. 🤷‍♂
