This is a review of Cobra's first official desert trooper; the Desert Scorpions. While the filecard alleges this is a punishment assignment (like the Toxo-Vipers), the outfit and equipment are top notch. Like the Hydro-Vipers, these desert soldiers come with an animal companion; a giant pet scorpion. It is not stated how these scorpions get to this unnatural size. I guess you just use your imagination at this point.

Splendid showcase as always, Kevin! Never had this one as a kid because I had slowed down my Joe collecting after the end of the Sunbow series, but I love the outfit on this guy. The cloth on the helmet reminds of Dusty as well. A rarity for Joe figures to incorporate cloth into the outfit.

1991 was a transitional year for GI Joe. That's the nicest way to put it.
There were some decent updates to figures such as Dusty, Mercer, Sci-fi, General Hawk and Low Light. We got a few new characters in Big Ben, Heavy Duty, and Red Star as well as the awesome Crimson Guard Immortal. But then you get this mixed bag of neon, Eco force, and the odd Cobra Commander who look like he's on steroids.
I would say out of all the years, 1991 is the first time where we really see GI Joe beginning to struggle as a toy line. The vehicles are more cheaply made and underwhelming (though I do think the Badger is under appreciated). We also begin to see more updates than usual. In fact, the majority of the carded line are updates. It was almost as if Hasbro had run out of ideas.
Hasbro still had some spark though as both Dusty and Desert Scorpion stand out as excellent figures.
