Another thing about wildling culture is that a stolen woman isn't chattel. "A man can have a wife, or a knife, not both.” There is motivation to stay with a strong warrior who is able to defend you and any children you may have by him, but if a wildling woman truly doesn't like her husband and/or if he mistreats her, she'll cut his throat and nobody'll say a thing against her for it. It's lucky for Jon that Ygritte liked him, because in wildling culture it's an easy step from unhappy wife to merry self-made widow.

Mainly that's because a whole ton of the content is based on real history. Although the historical stuff is taken from all over the place in both space and time, and then applied in a much shorter amount of time and to fewer people. But still, a LOT of the Game of Thrones people and events are based on real people and real events.
For just one example, I used to work with a guy who's last name was Lancaster, who was descended from the real family that the Lannisters were based on.
For another example, the conflict between the Baratheon brothers is based on a real civil war in England that led to the precursor document that inspired the Magna Carta. (The real Onion Knight also inspired a character in one of the Final Fantasy Games, not only in Game of Thrones).
Truth is stranger than fiction, and good art imitates life at least as much as life imitates art.

It's pretty much just a version of bride kidnapping that happens in reality.
Some cultures have a similar tradition in which the groom may have to fight the bride's male relatives (father, brothers, uncles, etc). It's to prove that he is capable of protecting her, possibly even better than they could so she "should be" under his protection instead.
Before judging it too harshly, consider that other cultures which felt less threatened but were more economic did a similar thing but with money. That's where a bride price came from. If he could spend that much and still be fine, he must have enough to provide well for her.
That's basically what has transformed into expensive engagement rings. He's paying to show his capability to provide and how a symbolic gesture of how much he values her.
If it helps make it less upsetting or whatever, consider that the bride may cooperate, her relatives may not fight hard, and the bride price may be loweres if the couple were in love and everyone approved of their union.

@@bluebay1031 the other person is right. In their minds, child marriages and arranged are normal because (at least my guess) is because they're having the older and wiser people handle something important before the younger one makes mistakes and "ruins" themselves/their chances. They even discuss it on social media. I'm not defending it but I can understand their logic.
I do *NOT* agree with it but can understand what they're saying, know what I mean?
For example, a certain organization known for spreading their political ideology through scaring people in the Middle East? One that the US fought against... Yeah, I think I can say it that way without upsetting the YT censors. Anyways, they posted memes online arguing their logic.
One of those showed Western Women complaining about not being able to find a husband, regretting their decisions, complaining about the downfall of their page only for their fans as they got older, etc.
On the other side, they showed their women covered up and caring for kids with an argument that she didn't have those regrets or concerns.
Again, it's pretty alien to my way as my wife picked me as much as I picked her and we were both annoyed at her bro who seemed to think she should have "ended up with" his friend who wanted her. Honestly, he still does which has been awkward. I mean, we went to a family Halloween party recently and I played with our kids while she socialized with my sis by her side. My sis told me later that she noticed that guy still checking my wife out.
For context, she made it clear that she wasn't interested in him in their teens, she's been with me for almost a decade and a half, we're all in our 30's, and he has a girlfriend. So... Yeah, I very much agree that it's weird but it is what it is I guess?

When I was in high school we went to a Circassian village in the north of the country they have a tradition exactly the same where the groom kidnaps the bride for 48 hours the whole village chases after him and if he succeeds she is his it was interesting to learn how many deep and ancient cultures live together in the Holy Land🇮🇱❤️🇮🇱

Wife stealing was a thing in many nomadic cultures. My pagan Hungarian ancestors did it too and others like the Cumans.
Sometimes the women were in on it, sometimes even her parents, sometimes only the guy doing the stealing.

I truly don’t know I feel about this. In our culture that would never fly. But for them it’s both kinda cute and a little messed up. But hey if it works for them.
