I used to watch the love boat and fantasy Island with my grandmother Brings back very fond memories
I watched both with my grandfather🥰.
@@ghiajohnson1547 I think I watched those mostly by myself as a teenager whose parents weren’t really into being parents. And I would wish that I had somebody like the Captain for a father.
@@safiremorningstar, I understand🥰🙏❤️!
It's on Roku and Pluto TV for free!
When I was 15, Jill was performing at the Santa Clara County Fair. 1982. I was alone as usual, but I took a chance and ran backstage after the show to maybe just meet her. She was busy doing her thing, you know getting things together and stuff. Her grandmother engaged me. She was so sweet. She told me to write Jill at Paramount Studios and Jill would get my letter. I was like, nah, it's okay. (I figured, she doesn't know me. I'm just a fan that wanted to say hello.) I said my goodbyes and left. I think Jill turned around and said Hi, so that was pretty cool. Anyway, that's my teeny little story and I'm sticking to it. :) I hope Jill is doing well. Thanks.
Who from our generation didn't watch Love Boat and Fantasy Island on Saturday night? Later on I graduated to watching Elvira's Movie Macabre on Saturday night. :) I definitely had a crush on Jill at the time. And I still think of a joke on MST3K when they cracked about how Alan Oppenheimer looked like Gavin Macleod and they said he was working as a "freelance Murray Slaughter." Jokes within jokes ...
I have met Jill at Chiller comic con. We talked a lot about her being in the movie airplane. We also told me that one of the thrills of working on the love boat was actually meeting Andy Warhol, who was a guest on the show once.
Lucky! Both of you
Why don't they show Fantasy Island in reruns somewhere?? I don't want to see it on UA-cam but the normal way we grew up with!
Write to Antenna TV or the Me TV affiliates. It usually comes around eventually.
Currently, Fantasy Island is airing on GetTV aka Great Entertainment Television.
Cast UA-cam to television?
In Canada it's on CTV app
Are you for real ?. Come on, 📀 D.V.D box sets of the series have been available for many years now !....
In the middle of a Love Boat re watch now. Just Yesterday I was in the middle of watching all of Jill first episodes.
How about now?
Princess Cruises just announced a theme cruise with the surviving cast members.
I still watch Love Boat every Sunday on MeTV. I was in love with Jill growing up, especially since we were close in age.
Watching The Love Boat was an (event) in our family. So many great familiar guest stars, made each episode seem fresh and enjoyable, with never a dull moment.
Here’s a little deep Gavin trivia for you… Gavin playing the bad guy on the Andy Griffith Show In the black and white “Sheriff Without a Gun” episode and then ironically playing Sheriff Andy Taylor in the movie “Sheriff Without a Gun” episode during the color season. I believe the title of that episode was the Taylors in Hollywood.
That’s one of my favorite episodes! My parents were big fans of his. My mom liked him on the Mary Tyler Moore show but I liked him so much on the Love Boat. I just saw the episode with Marie Osmond and John James! He was so handsome and she was so pretty.❤️
I always watched the Love Boat for the various guest stars as a lttle kid ,but Jill and Lauren were always "easy on the eyes" ,and very good actresses in the series.
Love Boat was great to watch. Always a positive message and fun amongst the crew. Miss simple tv shows these days.
Murray Slaughter was a very different character from Captain Merrill Stubing (though I'm just realizing now that the characters have the same initials). I so respected Gavin MacLeod for creating such different characters and I felt it displayed his range and talent. I also think it's remarkable that he created two memorable characters on hit shows, when most actors are lucky to create one character that people remember throughout time.
He also played drug dealer "Big Chicken" on the original Hawaii Five-O.
And he was Moriarty in Kelly's Heroes, and Oddball's most vocal tank crewman (especially for using 'negative waves').
I can imagine Murray S having a *career change* - to a cruise 'boat' captain. Ha ha!
Uh oh. You just gave Deacon Frye and George Jefferson some competition. Shermen Hemsley always stood out to me as a person that led two different great shows.
The first time I discovered Jill Whelan was in an infomercial for the SpaceMate Gold folding treadmill, alongside Lisa Whechel and Susan Lanier.
LOL ! I forgot the infamous Ted McGinley joined that cast late too.. I watched both shows when they debuted. The writing changed greatly from the pilot episode of Fantasy Island. And I guess I achieved some sort of fatigue hearing the Love Boat theme. It still takes you back to those times.
Thanks for sharing your memories, Sean. Do you remember that they changed who sang the theme song during the final season?
@jdsundstrom Oh that's way too hazy a detail for me to recall. LOL! BTW Dave. I watched Colossal today. Great recommendation. I have lots of questions and comments about it.
@@jdsundstrom Ted McGinley also joined Happy Days too late LOL! His longest stint on a sitcom was Married With Children albeit according to McGinley it took about 3 years before the audience would embace his character on the show LOL!
@@jdsundstrom Dionne Warwick; The final season featured the Love Boat Mermaids, of which I only know of Teri Hatcher.
I noticed him on the top of that cast picture too LOL. He always shows up late, just before a once-good show dies out.
Dave, I just found out Gavin was an usher for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in 1954 when they were in New York promoting their film The Long Long Trailer
He was an elevator operator in NYC as well.
Yes, this girl was exactly my age and so I wished I was her too. But my parents never let me watch Love Boat or Fantasy Island; my bedtime was 8:30, and the lights were out at 9pm. Plus, they thought the show was too hedonistic for our Baptist family. I only got to watch if I was at my Grandmother's house.
For some reason, my very strict parents let me watch that one.
ABC was known as the Oversexed Network, but I will never forget ze beauty of Lauren Tewes!
When he kept saying 😢 Twees instead of Tewes (I kept correcting each time)
Vincent Price was always a welcome Guest Syar on any Program!
Agreed!
He was good on The Carol Burnett Show and The Muppet Show, too
I have a Vincent price autograph. .he signed a card attached to a stuffed animal that was for the SPCA...They gave it some people as a gift in the 80's when you donated a lot.
In my youth I had a serious crush on Lauren Tewes. So adorable.
I was a kid during this time and had a crush on Vicki Stubing. (Don't tell Joanie Cunningham!)
Currently, I'm 50 years old, born, raised, and living in Louisiana, in a small suburb called Metairie, about 20 minutes, via the interstate, to New Orleans. Growing Up, I had an incurable crush on Jill Whelan, AKA Vicki, on The Love Boat. I still think she is Beautiful, and was such a sweet person, with an adorable and gorgeous face. ❤❤
Thanks for sharing!
My sisters and I always watched The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. I was in high school when TLB began (according to the years provided by another commenter below), so as work, friends, college and boyfriends took up more of my time I can't say I saw every episode, but I've always had fond memories of the show and loved all the familiar guest stars and of course the crew itself. Both of those shows were just so entertaining, beautiful exotic settings, charismatic cast, engaging storylines all wrapped up in an hour each week.
The show left its mark on me though. Fast forward to the mid nineties, when I began grad school. In one class I had to pick a topic for a major paper and chose the cruise industry. In my research I learned that The Love Boat was credited with kicking off the modern, popular cruise industry that remains today. I've been on a few cruises myself since too.
Great show to feature Dave, thank you!
I loved Saturday night tv when I was babysitting. I'm annoyed that I can't find a way to stream Fantasy Island which was my favorite but there it is.When I was in my 20s, I discovered Perry Mason & loved how Gavin was the bad guy in a few episodes! Thanks for keeping our memories alive, Dave!
Thanks for sharing!
Definitely, one of my favorite shows, too. As a teen , I loved to see all the beautiful fashion that was popular at the time. 😊 I’m going to check out MEtv,bc it would be comforting & so fun to rewatch these great shows once again. Thank you for sharing this with us,today Dave. 😊
It's on MeTV, Flor. Either Saturday or Sunday.
Thanks for this video! I love both of these woman on The Love Boat and it is great to hear they were nice women off the show also. I agree with you Dave no need to be petty about discussing a fellow actor who you may not have liked from 40 years ago but I am thrilled to know that Vincent Price was a nice man as I was and still am a huge fan of his. Jill Whelan survived being a child actor and Lauren Tewes had her struggles but over came those issues without being bitter. As for Gavin Macleod what can I say -he was one of the best actors ever. Gavin was great in everything.
Jill also appeared in the cast reunion from the "Airplane" movie mentioned in this video. One if the production staff'came up the idea of using airplane seat for the cast to sit in for the interview show.
I can't believe she has been down the isle THREE times.
Still believe Princess Cruises should have honored Gavin McLeod in some way. Perhaps naming a port facility in his honor.
The did tributes to him but I agree with you!!
That was really well done Dave. Brought back many good memories or my wife and I watching it every Saturday night after putting our kids to bed. 🙂
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
I watched Love Boat and Fantasy Island back to back every week. Thank you Dave!! As always, great upload and great to see you my friend. 😊
Capn Steuben never had negative waves, unlike his Moriarty character in Kelly's Heroes!😅
Lol, his name was Merrill "Steubing". Not 'Steuben'. 👍
Ahhh, the memories. Good ol' Ernie Anderson.
I liked watching the Love Boat intro at least to see who’s guest starring then decide to watch it or something else. I did want to be like Vicki and live on a cruise ship. I was too short to be a flight attendant so thought cruise director would be cool. Also always wondered what the heck retsyn was that cents would brag about. Its not a good thing 😂
Gavin McCloud was great in the movie Kelly’s Heroes. Also a couple of episodes of Perry Mason
_Love Boat_ was a great show because it had enough different stories that it could appeal to every age bracket. They also managed to get a lot of great actors, including some Hollywood royalty--some of whom hardly ever did television. It seems like a lot of actors really wanted to be on _The Love Boat_.
What a great video , I loved watching this show and couldn't wait to see who was on next. Thanks Dave, I think I watch some love boat today .
On an episode of Fantasy Island Jill played the drummer of a family band with Scott Baio
Yet in other lives, he was a bank robber in Mayberry, and a WWii tank mechanic,
This show and Fantasy Island are part of my childhood, I would love to have some merch.
Same here.
Jill was so cute. ❤
Dave, Please watch The Love Boat 1976 - The First Pilot Movie Parts 1 & 2.
Thank You for ANOTHER Great Video (and for the memories 😀).
Rest In Peace Gavin MacLeod.
I still have a few of the Love Boat figures on my USS FLAGG. Captain Stubing looks pretty good
on the bridge . Issac looks good as Destro's lackey.
There were some really great family friendly shows on TV in those days. "The Love Boat" was one of my favorites and instilled in me the desire to go on a cruise someday, which I have yet to do. I hope they don't make a new version of it given the silly agendas most TV shows carry these days, and cruise ships are so large now they have lost the intimacy of the older and smaller vessels.
Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Love boat was great back to classic 70s and good ole days thanks for sharing the truth
I love watching your channel Dave! We grew up in the same era and watched a lot of the same stuff. Love Boat was a favorite during that time. Saturday Night was love boat and fantasy island! Wonderful memories!
Thanks for the kind words, Mike. No doubt about it, we were watching a lot of the same shows.
I sent Jill a pm on FB a few yrs ago and told her, "Yeah, I crushed on you as a preteen." She replied, "Yay!"
Very cool!
Funny, Captain Stuebing reminds me of “Chicken” on Hawaii 5-0.
He was Big Chicken on Hawaii 5-0.
I just realized this show started when I was in high school and ended when I was a married woman.😀
Jill was the reason i kept watching i'm 53.
Outstanding David. God's Blessings
In England it was on Sunday at 530 pm never missed it
The thing that always amused me about the Love Boat is actors and actresses I recognized often came on there as different characters. Some were even related to crew at times such as Melissa Sue Anderson who once played Gopher's sister but also at times other characters. I wonder if these people on the cruise knew that they had so many lookalikes out there in the world.😉😄
I think Florence Henderson was on the show more than 10 times, each time playing a different character!
@@jdsundstrom She was and she was also on the very first original pilot.
wiki: "Certs were classified as mints, but they actually contained no oils of any mint plant. Instead, as has long been advertised, the mints contain "Retsyn," a trademarked name for a mixture of copper gluconate, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, and flavoring. It is the copper gluconate in Retsyn which gives Certs its signature green flecks.
Certs were originally shaped as simple circular tablets with beveled edges and "CERTS" embossed with the "C" enlarged and surrounding "ERTS". The shape later changed to have a toroidal bulge on each face without a hole; "CERTS" and "RETSYN" were debossed near the circumference"
That was Ernie Anderson doing those promos. How I miss hearing that voice!
I loved Ernie Anderson's classic voice-overs as well.
Great video. Ya know, I never actually realized that Captain Stubing and Murry Slaughter were the same person until the early 2000's and I loved both shows when they were first run! I was surprised with myself that I didn't realize it was him. Must be the hat. Made me think maybe Superman could actually disguise himself with just a pair of glasses.
Gavin MacLoed always hit Donald Sutherland with them negative waves in Kelly's Heroes. 🤣😂🤣😂
"Fantasy Island" always upset me too much. I quit watching it in 1981.
Jill and myself are the same age!
I've got you both beat by a few years. 🙂
Love your channel!
Thank you!
Never missed the Mary Tyler Moore show
Great video as always Dave!
Thanks Mike!
Dave you put positivity into your videos.
I try. 🙂
Great video as always
It wasn't an original idea but Spelling knew how to cash in on it
It was Love American Style on a boat
Because of the Love Boat I love to cruise
The 70's had some of the best all-time television shows. 📺TV📺 shows like M*A*S*H, The Odd Couple, Emergency, S.W.A.T, Starsky & Hutch, Beretta, Marcus Welby, the Dukes of Hazzard, Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, and the two great shows you mentioned. I used to spend time at my Grandparents and my Grandma loved those two shows. I'd be playing and watching with them, as you said hoping I could stay up later to watch Fantasy Island. I look at nowadays TV and nothing over the last decade compared to the 70's. The Big Bang Theory is one of the rarities. That 70's Show is another. There are a few decent shows but none as iconic and as beloved as the shows I grew up watching. Oh I I also thought living on a cruise ship 🚢 would be absolutely amazing! Take care and another great video.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing your memories.
Jill Whelan ex-husband took all her money from royals from the show love boat. She also did a reunion of love boat the new wave.
Thank you Dave 👍🏼❤
i have 4 seasons of the Love boat on dvd. too bad they didn't put out any more. I noticed that FI and the Love boat had a slew of celebrities. I wonder if they had some type of competition with the networks.
I never knew Jill as on "Airplane".
Not only did Gavin McCloud wirk WITH MTM on her ahiw but he alao in one episode of The Dick Van Dyke show indirectly as a customer jewelry salesman who sold Rob a replica of The empress Carlotta's necklace
Jan & Marcia at 9:56 the looks on their faces! I am trying to remember what/who they are ogling?? o_0
I was wild about both of them. I think I stopped watching The Love Boat when Lauren left.
I've heard Vincent Price only got paid scale wage for his work on the song Thriller. When Michael Jackson was accused of impropriety, Price was asked about it in an interview. He replied, "Well, he f@cked me."
⚓The Looovvvve Boat!🚢📺📼🙋
I liked Lauren back when she had that Dorothy Hamill hair cut....lol
Given its apparent nostalgic value (popularity), can anyone tell yours truly why only the first 3 or 4 seasons of this long-running series is available on DVD (even as all seasons of the less popular Hotel are) ?
I have no good answer to your question. I wish I understand why those later seasons are not available on DVD.
I never cared for Jill’s character. I have no idea what I didn’t like, but I think it started with her haircut. 😂 The Love Boat & Fantasy Island were favorites in our house. I can still hear the introductory music in my head and see my mom sitting on the couch. 💕
Thanks for sharing your memories, Marla. And...now that you mention it, her haircut was kinda lame. 🙂
I always thought young Jill looked like one of the "peanuts" gang, peppermint patty maybe?...1:16
I wish Friendly would get the Antenna TV channel
Me too. If it had that one, it would be pretty much perfect.
I loved Small Wonder growing up
I liked the viei.
...also wasn't he at one point in the navy?...😅😅😅
Please correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t Gavin McCloud in McHale’s Navy?
Yep.
Was most of Love boat filmed on a sound stage?
Yes
Ooo…I hit like and became the 666 like😳🤣🤣….
I think if they reboot the series Love Boat they should have Jill’s character Vickie be the Captain!😊
666? Yikes!
@@jdsundstrom 🤣… I know right?!🤣🤣
I thought Jill Whelan’s character was annoying and wasn’t necessary.
She was like the kid added to the Brady Bunch.
When a kid is added to a TV show, it means that they're running out of storylines.
Dave ❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊
👍👍👍📺
😂I loved The Love Boat..I watched it from S-1 until the series finale S-9⛵ The Love Boat The Next Wave was awful Dave.😆🌊
I agree. The original was the best!
@@jdsundstrom 🙋🗽🍎I agree 💯% with you Dave!🚢
Those things happened years ago why you making it sound like it only happened yesterday.
What? You mean it wasn't yesterday? Man, time sure flies. 🙂
@@jdsundstrom sometimes it seems that way doesn’t it
@@jdsundstrom I put up a comment it didn’t show up so that I could edit it so I will put it here again. Yeah sometimes it seems like it was only yesterday and that shows you that we’re getting old. Maybe I should only speak for myself.
I enjoyed Vincent Price in all his appearances in the seventies. But I never dug into his catalogue. There I had no interest.
Jill turned out to be a total fox
They could have done without Vicky. Didn't care for that character
😬 Cringe moment 👉1:17
⚓Dave,The Love Boat began in 1977 and ended in 1986! 🌊🚢🛳🏝
