You know Josh, I think that's why i love photography more than videography. Both have their purpose and place, and as video tech seems to be outpacing photo tech, it sometimes is easy to disregard the art of photography especially in this smart phone generation, but there is something unique with a camera in hand, coming home and making art, creating something using our creative minds and exploring endless possibilities in editing like canvas, creating something and then making it tangible through print is a major stress reliever. Its good to create something for our mental heath. Great edits, btw.

Josh, 7:15, next hint, if you add catch light to the iris, it’s always 180° the opposite direction of a point light source like the sun. In this case, the lower part of the iris, not the upper one. 😊

Josh, no need to apologize for being a regular guy. Your style is refreshing and I look forward for your next video. I realize that there are 100 ways of doing things, but if I can suggest you may want to look into using Linear profiles as a baseline.
I have some linear profiles built into my base lines that I’ve built over the years. I haven’t seen that they do much more than what I do with the sliders. It just seems like an extra step that doesn’t really take things to the next level. Maybe important if I were printing. But, for UA-cam in Instagram I keep it pretty simple
I found your workflow interesting. I have been working a lot harder than that on my images and I see several things you do that can make my workflow simpler, especially the masking at sharpen. Missed that somewhere along the way. Thanks. Have a blessed day!
I've been using LR a long time, and have shot birds for a long time, although not in as dedicated a fashion as you. But as you suggested might be the case, I picked up a couple of tips from your video that I thought were excellent... 1) using the radial filter to enhance/exaggerate the direction of the light source--what you do is fantastic, and 2) inverting the select subject so you can reduce clarity and noise in the background. The new select subject tool makes that such a snap to do and I haven't really taken advantage of that--so great tip. One thing I'd like to share back with you, and it's something I noticed when you were in the culling mode. And my suggestion might be something you do, but just didn't show... As you were going through the images in the Loupe view (of the Library Module) trying to pick out the best of similar images, I like to display the Loupe Info, and in particular the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Sometimes these are different across similar images, and help me determine which of very similar images might be better to keep (lower ISO, faster shutter speed for example). The second thing is when you were showing your grid view... again, I definitely (and always) have the Expanded Cells information on in the grid view (as opposed to sequence number which you were displaying). And for the same reason as above, i can quickly see in the grid view how basic shooting data might differ between images which can assist in my culling process. The data elements I've found to be most useful are: upper left File Base Name, below that Exposure and ISO, upper right File Extension, below that Capture Date/Time. Josh, great video. I liked the use of the radial filter for the directional light effect, and you also reminded me I should pay more attention to the white balance (and try using the eyedropper).
Love your simply editing and I'm finally to that stage after shooting for the past 14 years... and heaven forbid sometimes I even just post the Fuji jpegs
1st. I'll stick around even if you did switch to Sony 😉. Love the "keep it simple" approach. My approach is very similar except I use a Samsung tablet. Downloading and selecting the images in Samsung's Gallery before moving them to Lightroom is very simple and fast. With the tablet, I can do it from my favorite chair as well.
Thank you for that tutorial. Completely different work flow than what I currently use. But I think I will give it try to see how it feels for me. The statement you made about getting 10 different responses from 10 different folks is so true. There really isn't a right or wrong way. However someone solves their editing, it has to feel natural and efficient for them. I am a cloud data developer by profession and see the same thing in my work area. I am always interested to see how someone else approached a given situation.

Loved this video(and all your videos) Josh! I’ve shot mostly landscapes over my past 15 years of photography and have only in the past year gotten into birds and wildlife. I can’t tell you how much this has helped me! Keep up the great work! Also, don’t let us Nikon fanboys get you down! I’ve shot Nikon my whole life and have been waiting on a Z9 and Z400 f2.8 going on 6 months now…so I get the switch! Best wishes.

Thank you Bayou Josh. Indeed there are hundreds ways to edit your photographs. It gives your image a personal touch. Remember there is a difference between taking pictures and seeing pictures. In real life I seldom see those hotlights in the air. Maybe it's because I often tale panoramas of only the clouds and the sky, I call them cloudscapes. Problems with deep dark shadows in trees an forest I solve with a layer in shadow highlight correction ( never use that in cloudscapes, it makes them unnatural) in Photoshop elements. Beware a little bit of prefab solutions. Good photographers like Jan Wegener are often spoiling good photographs in my opinion. As said, in my opinion for I respect in some way othermans solutions. It's easy for me, I am an Illustrator. The only thing I wanna say is, be your original self. But please be subtle, see the lovely light you got in times you were taking your photographs and paint your respect with a subtle touch. I'm not God. All I want is people to feel the moment of seeing the real beauty, that lovely Wow.. It's in you. Thousands solutions, please don't make it a customized habit. Josh and Kathe, I really love your work, its in your experience proffesional. Just remember, seeing is a process, not a standard solution to solve things. And as the years pass by it may grow like a brilliant. And brilliant you are. Thanks and love you both.
I agree. I stop and watch Lightroom edit videos all the time just to see if I can get some new tips. I feel like I’m doing the same thing over and over again. Any new little tricks I can help my workflow is much appreciated.

Nice Video Josh. I appreciate your LR videos more now. I broke down and started paying for LR mobile on my IPAD and love editing now. I do hate taking too many pictures and then have to go through them all. That’s my least favorite part of this hobby. But I feel a little artistic when I edit the photos in LR. I used just crop and brighten them but now with LR there are lot more options to play with. Thanks for another great video…
Great video Josh, the only thing that I would improve is the selection of “the keepers “. I select 5 to 8 pictures and use the Library Survey view (N shortcut) there you can zoom in for check the focus also, for me is faster than go one by one. Cheers from Argentina 🇦🇷!
Simple is better! Great tips! I don't always remember to do the white/gray balance and it does make a big difference. I also took the plunge and will be getting my Sony A1 with the 200-600 on Monday. I'm still keeping my Z6II for macro and focus stacking.
The consequence of high FPS cameras is lots of pics to sort through: I can only summon 14 FPS at the moment and my tallies sometimes are still frightening. Last Sunday, shortly before a family dinner, my friend texted me that two Barred Owlets we’re aware of, close to my house, were fledging. I begged for a 45 min pass from my family, grabbed my D6/300mmPF and literally ran to the local woodland. With a broad grin on my face I was firing away on the two with several bursts when suddenly a third (unknown to us) owlet emerged from the hollow. 45 mins later I had just over a 1000 images. I’m still culling and sorting through that shoot. What I’ve found fascinating about editing the last few years is how my workflow keeps evolving, in no small part because of the advent of new tools and refined software. The upgrade to LR masking last year and the adoption of Topaz tools two years ago has made a huge impact. Your use of radial filters to highlight the light source was intriguing. I will bear that technique in mind. Thanks as always.
I’m certain I get a lot more keepers with the high frame rates. However I’ve become a lot more picky about what stays and goes. I still delete 95% of my images. I just think I delete images that I wouldn’t have deleted in the past.

From taking card out camera to storage etc …like you mention in other comments everyone has their own way but I’ve watched some videos and how confusing !!! I wish I could trade all of my photoshop knowledge for Lightroom knowledge. Photoshop is just like the 8-track tape player in my truck.... I think its time to move up to something better. I really liked this video.
Both tools have their place. What I like to encourage people that only, or primarily use Photoshop (and probably because PS preceeded LR) is that once you make the effort to use LR, you will wonder how you ever got along with out it. Many people find (like Josh indicates) is that the vast majority of edits can be accomplished just in LR, and the huge advantage of that is that they are 100% non-destructive. in addition, LR in an incredibly powerful organizer, and many people also utilize the Map, Book, and Print modules (along with the Publishing capability to Smugmug, Flickr, or other online sites). PS can't do this. That said, that are many, many things that PS can do that LR can't, and some things LR does, PS does much better (clone stamping is probably one of the more cited examples). Of course the capabilities in PS for layering, compositing, layer-masks, etc make for a uniquely powerful tool that LR just can't compete with. So bottom line, you really should be using both tools, and once you dig into to LR, again, you will find yourself wondering how you ever got along with out it, and you may also find that 90% of your images are completely edited in LR without the need to go to PS.
Hi Josh, thanks to share with other hobbyists your tips (for free😉) because that he beauty of being part of a community. I was a LR user for a while but I switched to DxO as it gives much better outputs (for me). The DeepPrime denoising is now included and I promise you it’s stunning. The only thing missing is the subject detection.
Nice to know Sony and Nikon users delete the same proportion of images when editing in Lightroom! This is the first video I’ve seen where someone admits their keeper rate!
When it comes to bird photography it’s sinful how many pictures I take. I should know better by now. I just can’t help myself. I delete so many images.
Agree, we all have to be honest. Remembering the film area when we couldn’t “fire” as crazy like today; we had to be more careful about everything. Now I have the filling we can buy new tech tools, go to the Wilde and shoot shoot shoot and then we have to deal with too many files expecting one is the picture of a life. Yeah, editing is not my favorite. I’m just getting back from Alaska and I’m getting Anxiety about going through the images. Nearly 2000 images every day for eight days. +2 hours of video every day.
Nice and simple approach Josh and it works great for sure. May I beg you for a similar tutorial on video editing? I love the colors you have been getting in the last couple videos and I really struggle myself - what settings do you use, what software do you use, what process etc…?
I would love to do a video like that but I am still struggling with it myself. Complete amateur figuring it out as I go. I’m learning more and more that it helps to get it right in the field. Everything underexposed a little bit helps. I use adobe premiere pro.
Since you like using the radial filters across the images, Lightroom can now intersect that radial filter And other filters with a luminous mask that you can adjust so that the radial filter is only affecting certain parts of the area that it lies across instead of the entire image underneath. There's a couple of videos about it and it's pretty interesting. You also have the best audio in the business! I'm not sure what you're using but it always sounds really good and full of dynamic range it's that's the correct term for audio lol. Thanks for the information and videos and best of luck to you!

Outstanding technique Josh. love your ideas. By the way, after waiting 5 months for a Nikon Z9, I decided like you and gave up on Nikon and purchased a Sony alpha 1 with the 200-600 lense. So far my birding keepers are fantastic. Compared to my Nikon D500 with the 200-500, there is no comparison. My first impression is, this is cheating. lol. It has made my birding experience loads of fun.
That’s so funny. I handed my Sony A1 to a Nikon user yesterday and he played with it for a few minutes. He gave it back to me and said he’s mad now. He’s angry that he’s had to work so hard for all of his images throughout the day. He texted me later and said he’s got one in the cart wrestling with the idea of buying it.
Something I've learned, starting to seriously edit for the first time, is to only look at focus and composition in the first culling of images. I received a refurbished lens with a smudge on an internal element and when I was evaluating how that artifact would affect image quality I took a backlit shot of a flower and, among other things, it was really washed out. Normally I would have culled it but since I was interested only in looking at the flare artifacts I edited it anyway and was blown away by how effectively I was able to recover the colors and make it pop. This image wasn't a keeper in the end due to the nasty flare artifacts from that smudge, but it taught me to ignore color and exposure in the first pass of culling. P.s. immediately reject a lens with smudges on an internal element. In my case the flare wasn't round, it was the shape of the smudge, and the subject was rendered onto the smudge and was visible in the flare artifacts sort of like a splotchy infinity mirror. I also felt the lens was a bit ”soft" but I'm not sure if it was due to the smudge or if my expectations were just too high. P.p.s. The lens was the RF 24-70 f2.8, ordered directly from the Canon refurb store 😖
Great video as always! My workflow is also very similar to yours. One thing I noticed when you copied the settings from one image to another was you deleted the subject mask and then redid it. Not sure if you knew that on the 2nd image you can click on the mask and then "subject1" right below it. There will be a box that opens up to update the mask. It will reselect the subject and apply the settings from the original. Saves a little time and adds consistency from one image to the next.
Thanks for the video. The best thing to me was you knew when to stop editing. Keep it simple. So many people go way overboard. One question though, have you or any of your followers tried Adobe Bridge to sort photos? I use a MacBook and can’t use FastStone Image Viewer which I hear is very good as Lightroom is slow for sorting. I’m just starting out with bird photography and editing so still trying things. And yes I need to cull heavily. Enjoy your videos particularly as I have the Sony a7iv and 100-400GM lens often with a 2x TC.

Great video - as always. I used to use Lightroom (5 years) but switched to Capture One about 18 months ago. (bit like you switching from Nikon to Sony!!!!!). I just prefer the results I get from C1 just seem to be able to get more subtle renders, otherwise they are very similar in many aspects.
@@BayouJosh Josh, I highly recommend watching a few Paul Reiffer sessions on UA-cam and/or David Grover at Capture One who produces some great tutorials.
Have to say I'm not a fan of a squashed radial filter, the sun doesn't work that. All light from the sun is ostensibly parallel as it hits objects on the ground. But it's a stylistic choice, I get it. Cropping before the other wrists would be a good idea as mentioned by others here so that you don't change the way your filters affect the new cropped composition. But I always enjoy your videos Josh. I use ON1 Photo RAW and the full suite of Topaz Labs tools. The sharpening, denoising and enlargements through those three tools are fantastic. Denoising of very low light images including Northern lights and astrophotography are impressive. But this is a bird photography channel. But late in the day or early morning blue hours photos can be made much more usable even at high ISO with the right tools.

I do. I just select one image, hold shift and click the last in the line I want to delete. Right click and hit remove. It’ll give you the option to delete them from the source.
Finally an editing video! LOL. Thank you. Certainly is a different but simply way. The question I guess I have is, how are your images coming out in the raw version so colorful/saturated? My images are so flat. You didn't appear to touch the saturation levels at all. Im shooting with the D500. In camera setting possibly? Very noticeable however. The statement you made about getting 10 different responses from 10 different folks is so true. There really isn't a right or wrong way. However someone solves their editing, it has to feel natural and efficient for them. I am a cloud data developer by profession and see the same thing in my work area. I am always interested to see how someone else approached a given situation.
I think it is true in any trade or hobby. There’s definitely more than one way to skin a cat.

Thank you Bayou Josh. Indeed there are hundreds ways to edit your photographs. It gives your image a personal touch. Remember there is a difference between taking pictures and seeing pictures.
In real life I seldom see those hotlights in the air. Maybe it's because I often tale panoramas of only the clouds and the sky, I call them cloudscapes. Problems with deep dark shadows in trees an forest I solve with a layer in shadow highlight correction ( never use that in cloudscapes, it makes them unnatural) in Photoshop elements. Beware a little bit of prefab solutions. Good photographers like Jan Wegener are often spoiling good photographs in my opinion. As said, in my opinion for I respect in some way othermans solutions. It's easy for me, I am an Illustrator. The only thing I wanna say is, be your original self. But please be subtle, see the lovely light you got in times you were taking your photographs and paint your respect with a subtle touch. I'm not God. All I want is people to feel the moment of seeing the real beauty, that lovely Wow.. It's in you. Thousands solutions, please don't make it a customized habit. Josh and Kathe, I really love your work, its in your experience proffesional. Just remember, seeing is a process, not a standard solution to solve things. And as the years pass by it may grow like a brilliant. And brilliant you are. Thanks and love you both.

Nice Video Josh. I appreciate your LR videos more now. I broke down and started paying for LR mobile on my IPAD and love editing now. I do hate taking too many pictures and then have to go through them all. That’s my least favorite part of this hobby. But I feel a little artistic when I edit the photos in LR. I used just crop and brighten them but now with LR there are lot more options to play with. Thanks for another great video…

Great video Josh, the only thing that I would improve is the selection of “the keepers “. I select 5 to 8 pictures and use the Library Survey view (N shortcut) there you can zoom in for check the focus also, for me is faster than go one by one. Cheers from Argentina 🇦🇷!

The consequence of high FPS cameras is lots of pics to sort through: I can only summon 14 FPS at the moment and my tallies sometimes are still frightening. Last Sunday, shortly before a family dinner, my friend texted me that two Barred Owlets we’re aware of, close to my house, were fledging. I begged for a 45 min pass from my family, grabbed my D6/300mmPF and literally ran to the local woodland. With a broad grin on my face I was firing away on the two with several bursts when suddenly a third (unknown to us) owlet emerged from the hollow. 45 mins later I had just over a 1000 images. I’m still culling and sorting through that shoot. What I’ve found fascinating about editing the last few years is how my workflow keeps evolving, in no small part because of the advent of new tools and refined software. The upgrade to LR masking last year and the adoption of Topaz tools two years ago has made a huge impact. Your use of radial filters to highlight the light source was intriguing. I will bear that technique in mind. Thanks as always.
I’m certain I get a lot more keepers with the high frame rates. However I’ve become a lot more picky about what stays and goes. I still delete 95% of my images. I just think I delete images that I wouldn’t have deleted in the past.

I wish I could trade all of my photoshop knowledge for Lightroom knowledge. Photoshop is just like the 8-track tape player in my truck.... I think its time to move up to something better.

Both tools have their place. What I like to encourage people that only, or primarily use Photoshop (and probably because PS preceeded LR) is that once you make the effort to use LR, you will wonder how you ever got along with out it. Many people find (like Josh indicates) is that the vast majority of edits can be accomplished just in LR, and the huge advantage of that is that they are 100% non-destructive. in addition, LR in an incredibly powerful organizer, and many people also utilize the Map, Book, and Print modules (along with the Publishing capability to Smugmug, Flickr, or other online sites). PS can't do this.
That said, that are many, many things that PS can do that LR can't, and some things LR does, PS does much better (clone stamping is probably one of the more cited examples). Of course the capabilities in PS for layering, compositing, layer-masks, etc make for a uniquely powerful tool that LR just can't compete with.
So bottom line, you really should be using both tools, and once you dig into to LR, again, you will find yourself wondering how you ever got along with out it, and you may also find that 90% of your images are completely edited in LR without the need to go to PS.
Hi Josh, thanks to share with other hobbyists your tips (for free😉) because that he beauty of being part of a community. I was a LR user for a while but I switched to DxO as it gives much better outputs (for me). The DeepPrime denoising is now included and I promise you it’s stunning. The only thing missing is the subject detection.

When it comes to bird photography it’s sinful how many pictures I take. I should know better by now. I just can’t help myself. I delete so many images.
Agree, we all have to be honest. Remembering the film area when we couldn’t “fire” as crazy like today; we had to be more careful about everything. Now I have the filling we can buy new tech tools, go to the Wilde and shoot shoot shoot and then we have to deal with too many files expecting one is the picture of a life. Yeah, editing is not my favorite. I’m just getting back from Alaska and I’m getting Anxiety about going through the images. Nearly 2000 images every day for eight days. +2 hours of video every day.

Nice and simple approach Josh and it works great for sure. May I beg you for a similar tutorial on video editing? I love the colors you have been getting in the last couple videos and I really struggle myself - what settings do you use, what software do you use, what process etc…?
I would love to do a video like that but I am still struggling with it myself. Complete amateur figuring it out as I go. I’m learning more and more that it helps to get it right in the field. Everything underexposed a little bit helps. I use adobe premiere pro.

Since you like using the radial filters across the images, Lightroom can now intersect that radial filter And other filters with a luminous mask that you can adjust so that the radial filter is only affecting certain parts of the area that it lies across instead of the entire image underneath. There's a couple of videos about it and it's pretty interesting. You also have the best audio in the business! I'm not sure what you're using but it always sounds really good and full of dynamic range it's that's the correct term for audio lol. Thanks for the information and videos and best of luck to you!

Outstanding technique Josh. love your ideas. By the way, after waiting 5 months for a Nikon Z9, I decided like you and gave up on Nikon and purchased a Sony alpha 1 with the 200-600 lense. So far my birding keepers are fantastic. Compared to my Nikon D500 with the 200-500, there is no comparison. My first impression is, this is cheating. lol. It has made my birding experience loads of fun.
That’s so funny. I handed my Sony A1 to a Nikon user yesterday and he played with it for a few minutes. He gave it back to me and said he’s mad now. He’s angry that he’s had to work so hard for all of his images throughout the day. He texted me later and said he’s got one in the cart wrestling with the idea of buying it.
Something I've learned, starting to seriously edit for the first time, is to only look at focus and composition in the first culling of images.
I received a refurbished lens with a smudge on an internal element and when I was evaluating how that artifact would affect image quality I took a backlit shot of a flower and, among other things, it was really washed out. Normally I would have culled it but since I was interested only in looking at the flare artifacts I edited it anyway and was blown away by how effectively I was able to recover the colors and make it pop. This image wasn't a keeper in the end due to the nasty flare artifacts from that smudge, but it taught me to ignore color and exposure in the first pass of culling.
P.s. immediately reject a lens with smudges on an internal element. In my case the flare wasn't round, it was the shape of the smudge, and the subject was rendered onto the smudge and was visible in the flare artifacts sort of like a splotchy infinity mirror. I also felt the lens was a bit ”soft" but I'm not sure if it was due to the smudge or if my expectations were just too high.
P.p.s. The lens was the RF 24-70 f2.8, ordered directly from the Canon refurb store 😖

Great video as always! My workflow is also very similar to yours. One thing I noticed when you copied the settings from one image to another was you deleted the subject mask and then redid it. Not sure if you knew that on the 2nd image you can click on the mask and then "subject1" right below it. There will be a box that opens up to update the mask. It will reselect the subject and apply the settings from the original. Saves a little time and adds consistency from one image to the next.

Thanks for the video. The best thing to me was you knew when to stop editing. Keep it simple. So many people go way overboard. One question though, have you or any of your followers tried Adobe Bridge to sort photos? I use a MacBook and can’t use FastStone Image Viewer which I hear is very good as Lightroom is slow for sorting. I’m just starting out with bird photography and editing so still trying things. And yes I need to cull heavily. Enjoy your videos particularly as I have the Sony a7iv and 100-400GM lens often with a 2x TC.

Great video - as always. I used to use Lightroom (5 years) but switched to Capture One about 18 months ago. (bit like you switching from Nikon to Sony!!!!!). I just prefer the results I get from C1 just seem to be able to get more subtle renders, otherwise they are very similar in many aspects.

@@BayouJosh For quick adjustments, sliders, etc... but a mouse is definitely easier for advanced functions.
LR Mobile is almost as complete as it is for a PC. A stylus is a great addition for detail work.
Have to say I'm not a fan of a squashed radial filter, the sun doesn't work that. All light from the sun is ostensibly parallel as it hits objects on the ground. But it's a stylistic choice, I get it. Cropping before the other wrists would be a good idea as mentioned by others here so that you don't change the way your filters affect the new cropped composition. But I always enjoy your videos Josh. I use ON1 Photo RAW and the full suite of Topaz Labs tools. The sharpening, denoising and enlargements through those three tools are fantastic. Denoising of very low light images including Northern lights and astrophotography are impressive. But this is a bird photography channel. But late in the day or early morning blue hours photos can be made much more usable even at high ISO with the right tools.
I use those programs very sparingly. I’ve figured out workarounds in Lightroom that do nearly the same thing.

I do. I just select one image, hold shift and click the last in the line I want to delete. Right click and hit remove. It’ll give you the option to delete them from the source.
Finally an editing video! LOL. Thank you. Certainly is a different but simply way. The question I guess I have is, how are your images coming out in the raw version so colorful/saturated? My images are so flat. You didn't appear to touch the saturation levels at all. Im shooting with the D500. In camera setting possibly? Very noticeable however.
