I appreciate the information, man. I have an old sport bike sitting in storage that I was about to give up on. Now I definitely feel confident I can get that baby going. Looking forward to watching your other videos. Cheers.
This is a great video. Just needed some tips on starting up after the winter I'm a 3rd year bike owner and this video made getting my bike out after sitting easier than the last two years. I was running in minutes.
Just took my bike off the road for the winter, first thing I did was take the battery off and put it on a optimiser drained the carbs. But when I go to start the bike I will put the fuel top on prime first. So you haven't got to turn the engine over to fill the bowl. Good video take it easy from south wales in the uk
I have two klr 650 that have been sitting for years and years ....bought new battery and cleaning the carbs was no problem and they both fired right up ...but all the exposed rubber bits are just falling apart...fuel lines ...air cleaner element tires? ALL need replacement to feelgood about riding them again I mean I know I need to change the fluids before I ride em but man what else is rotten? I had replaced the fairing/headlight non faired one from an old klr600 complete with its turn signals ...the rubber on the turn signals now close to 30 years old literally disintegrated!
What about a battery that has sat for over 2 years? No matter what I did I couldn’t get the battery to charge. I read that batteries have a sort of memory when they discharge all of their juice and won’t ever go back to full charge or even hold a charge. Have you heard of this before?
Lead acid batteries don't have a memory. They just get corrosion on the plates. If it won't take a charge using an old school transformer type charger then it's junk. You'll need a new one. Hope this helps Cheers Andy
Hey buddy, I have a gravity fed carburetor motorcycle...... can I just put the petcock on close and then run the remaining gas in the carb bowl dry to store it for an extended period of time? Will that work in keeping the carburetor gunk free and clogging the jets? Do I need to get some stabil fuel to run through it first so the jets won't gunk up?
Hi. Nice video. I have a Honda CB750F DOHC 1982. My bike has not been on the road for 4 years, well stored in a garage. Got the petrol tank cleaned , my concern is the 4 carbs. Should I try start it or should I start with carburetor cleanup ? The carbs are fairly new, bought this set months before bike went into hibernation. Keihin CR 29. I feel a little intimidated into fiddling with them. What is your take on this ? Cheers
you dont get the oil pressure up before ignition? saw several videos where they take the spark plug out and 'start' it without... just curious, new to this and to revive and oldie :)
Hmmm.....you could either put some injector cleaner in with the new fuel or remove the injector & soak in cleaner. I have found brake cleaner pretty good. I fit the injector to one of the Wurth brake cleaner pump bottles hold the trigger & supply 12v to the injector terminals to open the injector. The brake cleaner then passes through the injector as if it were fuel & flushes it. It's in one of my videos somewhere! Hope this helps. Thanks Andy
@@AndyMechanic Thanks for the info. I'll check around to see what injector cleaners work well mixed with fuel and if they can cause problems. Plan B if that doesn't pan out
My friend moved to the USA years ago and I am currently taking my test for a larger bike and will be taking the bike off her (Honda Fireblade) it's been in storage for quite a few years, if I follow the instructions on this video will it run or because its been a few years will there be extra things I have to look out for?
Well you'll likely need a new battery & definable drain all fuel & replace Inc the carbs (if fuel injection then they will be okay) Hope this helps Cheers Andy
I have seen people recommend removing spark plugs and injecting a little oil, or a lot and then let it sit if necessary. Technique involves lubricating cylinder walls with Marvel Mystery oil or other light oil, can be mixed 50/50 with kerosene, to ensure that everything is lubricated. Engine should be turned with plugs out and no pressure. A healthy engine should start to pump oil and coat walls almost immediately on startup, but this technique helps avoid abrasion and helps free up a stuck ring. I will do this on a bike that sat for 7 years, stored drained of fuel and oil. I did bring a brand new lawn mower back to life that had a seized engine due to failure to add oil on initial startup. Similar process, I flooded cylinder with diesel fuel and added more daily. After a week, engine started. Smoked a lot, but pistons were freed.
is it possible that my battery has discharged after a month being off the bike as when i tried starting her she wouldnt fire up at all, not even a sputter :/
Yes, if the battery's plates are badly corroded then it is likely it could have gone completely Flat again. Try charging it for 24 hrs. Leave it off the bike for a week and then fit and test. If OK then you may have a parasitic drain on the bike. Hope this helps. Cheers Andy
@@AndyMechanic shes turning over and last month i charged and tested the battery then left it out of the bike so my alarm didnt drain it but she just wont fire up, i had the carbs rebuilt a month ago too so i know its not that im just pondering if its maybe that the battery has discharged a little bit but enough for the bike to not fire? :/
Hey, I have a 1991 ninja zxr 250. The bike sat for just over a year and I started it up the other day. Took a couple minutes but it fired up and idled nicely. I’ve since ridden it every day for about 3 days in a row to work and back (about 15kms away). On my way home today the bike cut out as I pulled up to a traffic light. It started back up straight away but wouldn’t idle. I pulled over and check the oil to find it was pretty much empty. I managed to get to a repco and buy some oil. Wasn’t sure what to get but they recommended 10w50 semi synthetic. Put 2 litres in and managed to get the bike to idle again. Then rode the bike home and it was running good until just before I got home and it started to lose power. Ended up rolling into my driveway and it cut out as soon as I let go of the throttle. Any ideas what could be causing it? The fact that it’s been running well the last few does has really stumped me but I’m also super new to motorcycles. Cheers
Oh this does not sound good at all. Likely an internal engine seize. Piston to bore or big end unfortunately You'll have to get a mechanic to perform a compression test, if that's good on all cylinders then I'd suspect big end seize. Will require the head & cylinders to be removed for further inspection. If big end then the crank shaft will need to be removed for repair - this will require a full engine rebuild Oil level is imperative & if allowed to fall critically low will certainly cause serious engine damage Andy
@Andy Mechanic That’s not at all what I wanted to hear 😩 do you have any videos on how to dismantle engine to check what you’ve said to? I’m a machinist engineer so I should be able to figure out my way around it and even do the repairs myself. Cheers for your help. Otherwise do you know roughly what it would cost to get a mechanic to check it over ?
1. Get fresh fuel, 2. Check the spark plug condition and test for spark that the same time 3. Clean the carburetor or drain it, 4. heck coolant or oil 5. Look at the connections and start it up 6. See if it leaks while letting it warm up
If it’s a 2-stroke I’d put a little bit of 2-stroke or 10w-40 motor oil in the spark plug hole and kick it to make sure it’s lubricated and not dry, I’d put about a teaspoon
Tried to start mine, it ran, but terrible power, and then stalled and couldn't start it again. I hope its just old gas, it has been sitting for 2 months
@@AndyMechanic already found the culprit. I forgot to set my valves correctly. I did a big bore upgrade.. And the gas was bad too so i added new gas. Its fuel injected as well
What about this hydrolock thing heard in Kawasaki ZG GTR Concours 4 cylinders 1000cc or liter liter what’re called down here? Has lithium ion, meant to get lithium iron Scotty kylmer said better choice? Is it sponsored by Yamaha? He don’t aw ser, anyone watching in 2020?

well that really depends on what the fault is that's preventing the bike from starting?
