When I was a youngster, we used to tinker around with my Grandpa's 3 old cars he had sitting behind his station in a field. They were cars that customers brought in and never came back for or didn't pay for repairs. He had a '53 Cadillac that took all summer with a lot of trial and error to get running, but I finally got it to run and drive. I was really proud to get something that had sat for 14 years running again. That started my passion for auto repair.

@@darrylbooc1196 The Caddy was brought to my Grandpa in for a tune-up. The car had almost 100K miles and needed a lot of work. The guy said "no" to the repairs when he found out the cost. He never came and got the car for unknown reasons. The car turned over but would not run. I changed all the spark plugs and wires, cap/rotor and it was my first time learning how to rebuild a carburetor. My Grandpa helped me with the basics but I wanted to learn on my own thru trial and error. I replaced a lot of hoses and wiring that got chewed by rodents, drained the fuel tank and cleaned it out. After about a 2 months of working on it, I got it to run. Fiddled around with the timing and fine tuning the carb.I changed the transmission fluid and oil which were all sludge by that point and in September of 1977, it was on the road for the first time since 1963. It was a fun learning experience for me.

I think most pistons have been aluminum for a long long time, they don't really rust. Just a thin layer of aluminum oxide and then it stops. Maybe if its a steel sleeve or iron bore it might rust but I mean it's a garage find, not a 50 year old junkyard find.

I've got a lot of motorcycles & purposely got a house on a tall hill. After checking that there's gas & Its on, amazing what a good downhill run , with it 3ed & dump the clutch will do. 📉😎📈

Woot! At 18 I bought my uncles Kawasaki KZ650 LTD. It had sat rotting in his garage for as long as I existed. New gas, new oil, new battery, fired right up! I could never get the 4 carburetors sync'd up just right, but that's on me, not the bike. That bike was like riding a couch on the highway!

    VERY HELPFUL - Thank you!!
    I have a few questions:
1 - if we don't have that can like you have, where should we put the used gasoline? Where do we find a container to safely carry it to the recycle place?
2 - should we change the oil before trying to start a bike that's been sitting for 7 years or so?
3 - What about the fuel pump? Wouldn't it also be bad? Should we change that before trying to start it?
2 - at the 5m 5s mark when you start it, there's nothing under the bike. BUT at the 6 min mark, there's a huge puddle with a paper towel under it. What happened there?
Thanks for all you do Scotty - LOVE your channel.
