Temperature test was interesting for me. For me its totally normal to take meter from inside from +20c to outside to -30c. And then back inside. Problematic with moisture. Few times i even had to take meter to sauna for about +80c and huge moisture, really bad condition for electronic.
Those are some rough swings.

I promise, I don't work for the company who makes that product. Was just amazed it worked so well. The Fluke 189 was about a half hour of work to clean up.

Great tip, should of been it's own little video though. Your Meter test videos are unique and should stand alone with no other material added in so as to keep them as concise as possible.
These testers are very cheap ... everyone knows that they are not a Fluke ... that you need to kill them ... hahahahahaha
I just bought the AN8008 a few weeks ago, great little meter to have handy when on the road.
I donate anengs to the local non-profit makerspace for the kids to use on low voltage classes. I've given them lots of stuff. It's a great place for kids to learn robotics and arduino stuff. They never measure amps unless it's with the fluke clamp but the voltage is never higher than 12vdc. I donate the more expensive aneng/zoytek (same company from what I gather). I had 8 an870 meters ordered from a seller on Amazon last summer and he never made good on them. I didn't get half my money back. I had a bunch of other things ordered and it got to a point where my sanity was worth more than a couple hundred bucks left I was owed haha

@joe smith I'm retired, 44 and still kinda sharp so I do what I can. I saved up for a year and kitted out their whole electronics section. Anonymously of course but they gave me a lifetime membership and the opportunity to start teaching some basic courses. I think I'm gonna put the classes up on the tubes for the students.
I live on an island with 100k people spread out over a massive distance yet we have one of the coolest makerspaces on this side of Quebec. I live in Sydney but not the little Dave Sydney haha. I'm in Nova Scotia. But anyway there's nothing you can't build there. They have a smithy for making anything and more cnc machines than you can shake a stick at. The place was put together by a mechanical engineer without alot of electronics knowledge when he was filling the place. It's a shame though he was sucked into buying some used stratysis gear and the operation and upkeep on them is crazy. The local electric utility basically gave him a blank cheque a year before covid and the place closed before it could open haha.

@joe smith I'm no super expert and nor do I have the confidence, resources or following. It's alot of nors. I prefer smaller goals, they help my mental well being. Sleeping on a chair in my workshop since hurricane Fiona destroyed around 80 percent of my house is growing old. I stay upstairs and the wife sleeps in the part of the basement which was unaffected with our 5 cats. The channel will be for after this mess when the rebuild is finished and we start getting possessions back. Insurance made an error and it took 4 months to resolve. I got rid of my 3d printers so I'd have a place to put clothes. I've kept busy reading text books and doing circuits. I'm not complaining. Things could be worse if someone or one of our animals was seriously hurt.
@joe smith I don't think I'm qualified brother. I've only been hitting the books and doing circuits alot the past 4 years. I got the degree. Refused a dream job then made alot of mistakes until I met my wife. Haha life ain't perfect though. I'd like to think some of the gear I see on the keysight channels is but that's because I can't afford a million dollar scope with a 27 inch touch screen but nor would I ever need one. It's fun to look though.
You tho sir could pull it off with aplomb. Plus you're humble to a fault. Haha I'm going to be doing alot of stuff I find fun too. Like building an rc track in the plot of land beside the one my house is on just because I have access to a tractor and wanna build a gas powered rc truck and see what happens. Then never use it again because of my adhd. Lol. Plus I live on a dead end street near the woods beside the Atlantic haha.
It's all about having fun really and helping people should be a by product. There's a million instructional videos which I'll also most like do but I'd also like to see an op amp video where the creator doesn't assume we've never heard of one. That being said, if not for some creators that we both know of no one could figure out the basics using a video. It's hard to find a learning project with opamps that is outside of a gain circuit for a homemade sensor or audio but not as far as making an ekg machine haha. I've been reading alot of opamp books lately and soldering up circuits

I don't see a lot of these tests as educational and certainly not funny. I'm all for careful testing at levels users will be facing. You are testing this thing way outside its specs. What do you expect? This is just destroying usable products that someone ELSE could get some use out of. I reckon I could get a Fluke to spaz out given the right combo of kilo voltage type and frequency in GHz ranges. So what?
What I do not like is the poor voltage protections inside these and reviews such as yours would do well to highlight that these are retail devices that can be dangerous when used as per specifications. AKA not fit for purpose really.
I am not expecting anything. I let the data speak for itself. All the meters are tested the same. Some do much better than others. While I appreciate your concerns as to how I spend my personal income, if I want to use some of it to test meters to failure, that's my choice, not yours. If you find no value in the data I show, and it bothers you to see these meters tested this way, there's an easy fix. Don't watch!! Find a feel good channel. There's many to choose from.

Glad you enjoyed it. That meter took a long time to show up for some reason. The compound takes some labor and may require some wet sanding depending how bad the scratches are. The scratches on the scopes were deep enough to catch my fingernail.

Most UNI-T products I have looked at (which is more than any other brand) are damaged from the grill starter. I have little doubt this one would behave any different.

I really like the 189 as a general purpose meter. It's been getting a fair amount of use since I got it.
Cliff, well seeing that you said it, yes that is pretty much true. The BM869s has been packed away since I got the 189. Both meters have their strong points. The biggest problem I see with the Fluke is the age. Parts are not available. If it were a current product, I would own one. My friend found the interface for it so I hope to be able to try it all out in the future.

The an8009 and the an8009 are basically the same meter. They are cheap enough you could start with the an8009 and then maybe upgrade to an an8009 later when you are ready.

Have you taken the time to download the spreadsheet? Are the meters you are asking about listed? If you check the FAQ you will find I don't hand out recommendations. I would have no idea what your needs are, your skill level or how you plan to use the it. It's really up to you to decide what tools you need. If you really want a lot of feedback, start a thread in the Beginners or Test Equipment section of the EEVBLOG site asking for help.

Once this Aneng has its fuse blown out, it has a great chance to lay in its graveyard. But it is cheaper than Fluke. It won’t be a big hit to your wallet.

I have an 8008 in transit from AliExpress. I bought it because it was cheap and will only use it for digital voltages.
I will sure as hell not plug it into AC. I have my Fluke87 for that.
It looks like it did pretty good for what it is. A $20 meter, with great accuracy for hobby work. I was expecting a lot worse.

Glad you enjoyed the video. At least they seemed to have address the range problem with the rectified AC. Too bad they removed the temperature input and can no longer read 10M and up. With the new sensitivity to RF, I wonder if the meter powers up with a 200MHz CMOS clock.
I was also amazed that it didn't work if the signal didn't pass the zero threshold! How often does one come across a 200 MHz AC signal as opposed to a digital signal?
Still, ~160 MHz is way over my needs.

Very nice scientiically controled testing.
Seeing the AN8008 fail at close to the same level as the 8002 does seem to give some confidence that it is a bit of a controlled test. Actually, I check the generator pretty much on every run and it appears very stable.
I like the videos but, i have a question. what it the purpose of this tests? to me its like testing a car engine by putting it in first gear at 150mph at a deep slope and look for the damages.... or putting 5kv into a laptop to se if it holds.. even if it clearly states the maximum voltage it support.

It funny how so many people equate these tests to cars. I never understood it as there are standards for handheld meter testing as well as crash testing cars. The original purpose of these tests was to determine if a $50 meter could be as robust as a more expensive one. I believe we have that answer but I continue to benchmark them out of my own interest.
What can happen to a pc/notebook when it is physically connected to a network or ac while somewhere near you a lightning strikes? This is very similar to what can happen to your dmm when there are transients. And no one later will ask why the notebook was "driven" outside it's specs even when they are clearly stated ;-) And if this happens while you are working with your notebook this may hurt you. Well this is not so obvious while working with a notebook but while working with a dmm a well protected device can be very helpful not only for the dmm. Security features are always for the unexpected and hopefully seldom moment.
I recently had a 2 year old UT61e destroyed after in inadvertently turning a motor into a step up transformer, I have a 30 year old meter that has survived far worse abuse and still works perfectly, so these tests are extremely useful.
Did you save the UT61E or take any pictures of the insides? I would like to see what happened to it.
Wow in a world of folks Youtubing on meters that don't have much of a clue it's refreshing to see someone REALLY knowledgeable. I teach ESWP and meter Safety so this is incredibly interesting to me. Great job. Most people just don't understand how dangerous an inferior meter can be!. I would love to communicate with you directly as this is a most interesting and practical subject to me!!
Very little of what I have shown in these videos has anything to do with safety of which I would say I know little about. Especially after seeing some of the problems with products that have been certified. These transients are very low energy and only meant to determine a meters level of electrical robustness. There is a FAQ linked in the about page and also in the description of many of the later videos. You may want to have a read.

I have a very old micronta digital, it would not stand a chance with your tests, i keep it in a safe with my tea bags so you cant get to it Ha ha :-D :-D.
I am the third owner of that Fluke. I had asked to borrow it for some testing and cleaned it up while I had it. It's a pretty nice general purpose meter for it's age. If Fluke still offered it with current certs, I would have one on order and run it on the jig.
I did make some videos on the UNI-T UT181A. It's a clone of Flukes 289 with some added benefits. IMO, the best meter UNI-T has made. Still needs some improvements before I would recommend it.
You saw what happened to the last Micronta meter. Stupid in-line fuses. I should have just lit that thing up.
When measuring a 9VAC transformer I got zero on this meter (set to V) but it read correctly on another. DC measures ok. Defective?
Not being there, hard to say. Maybe you didn't read the manual to know you have to use the yellow button to select if its in AC or DC mode? The dial is color coded but maybe you didn't understand that. Start watching at 6:45.

You made so much tests with the AN8008. Do you test AC-currents between 1mA and 10mA @50Hz sinus ?
My AN8008 measures 0.000. The malfunction is only at AC, DC works.
Because of this kind of malfunction I think every AN8008 has a design malfunction.
The seller got pictures and videos of the malfunction, but he not do any reaction.
Any testing I ran was recorded in these videos from 5 years ago. Rare I would look at current as it's not something I use. When I do, it would be DC, especially at the lower currents you mention. @@kabelingo5418 Right and when you read the manual, you will see that are missing. Not a problem with the meter but I have seen many people buy products before reading about them. In this case, the meter was very low cost so consider it a good lesson to do your research first next time.
@@joesmith-je3tq My handout for the AN8008 doesn't state that it simply reads 0.000 between 1mA and 10mA AC current. It doesn't say so on the order page either. AC and DC have the same ranges. DC works correctly. Low cost is ok, that's why I buy it. But having blind gaps in a multimeter is just waste.
@@kabelingo5418 That blind area is called out in the data sheets and a common complaint with buyers.
Your videos are very informative and entertaining, but they also make me feel sorry for the poor multimeters that are being abused way beyond their design specs; I appreciate that you do not shit on a product just because it doesn't cost half a month's salary or is not labelled Fluke or Keysight or Rohde and Schwarz, unlike another electronics blogger who shall not be named. You actually go to the trouble of testing the thing first, and you have confirmed what I have already discovered from 37 years of experience as an electronics engineer and experimenter; brand name and price do not necessarily imply that a particular piece of equipment is orders of magnitude superior to another brand that is unknown and costs somewhat less.
Based on your video I was about to purchase an AN8008, but the Surpeer AV4, which has superior specs and great reviews (at least the few that I have seen), caught my eye, so I have ordered one from Amazon, and I will be testing it myself. I already have an Aneng AN8002, which works great, but the temperature measurement function is extremely inaccurate (keeps reading almost 4 degrees celsius lower). Anyway, thanks and keep making those great videos!

I've posted a fair amount of details about the tests I run and how they compare with the IEC standards. This meter for example is marked CAT III 600V. If it were independently certified it would see 6KV, 2 ohm source, 50us FWHH. Too bad I never even made it close to that. But the other part of this is that they spec a current waveform as well. Hence the combo generator. I come no where meeting this. When you say I test them way beyond, I say I am not even close to running them at the levels IEC requires. And there is a reason for this. Namely, I am not concerned with the safety so much as I am in how robust the meters are. This has been stated since day one.
You would have to look at the spread sheet. I would guess about 60 meters now. When it comes to my robustness tests, the top meters were sold under the Fluke, Brymen, Gossen and HIOKI brands.
I looked at some pictures of the AV4 and it appears they placed the protection on the backside of the switch, just like this meter. I will be interested in seeing you testing or at least reading about it.

ANENG 8000 series meters not bad for the price of a Pizza. A home gamer/hobby person could own a Fluke 101 for high energy/high voltage work an an ANENG 8000 series meter for low voltage bench work and have a lot of measurement capability and safety for under $70 for both meters or just buy a Fluke 15B+ if you could have only one meter and still be under $80.
If the gamer kids are working in cat iii, they should get a cat iii meter. if the have no need, why waste the money? personally the 15b, 101 and 8000 really wouldn't be of much use to me for my own electronic hobby. I would much rather a good used bench meter. the bm869s is not too bad.
I'm a "home gamer/hobby person" (I work with arcade boards and consoles/vintage PCs) and I use an 8008 as a portable meter because I like how much functionality you get in such a small package, the price is right, and it has a nice backlight which I actually need. I would never use it any situation with even a hint of danger. On my bench I have a Fluke 45 I got on craigslist for $70, probably the best I can afford.
EDIT: I should note that I've found the 8008 to be quite accurate, my 45 was calibrated last year and the 8008 matches it closely. I have some other cheapo meters (harbor freight freebies, etc) and they're just all over the place. for $20 I'm happy!

You list electronics as your hobby and have some serious equipment at your disposal. Would it be rude to ask what line of work you do? I assume you have (electrical) engineering background.

Dave is alright sometimes hes right about alot of things but I think he is a whinny cry baby spoiled brat at heart, not to mention heavily biased toward his personal preferences. Personality wise I think you got em maybe even knowledge wise I mean your certainly not dumb. Also maybe be less secretive about modding these meters man I would love to know what you did to that 181A I really like that meter. Though I doubt I will be able to afford one any time soon I gotta by a new scope first. What do u recommend in the 100 dollar range?

You really should add into the title or description of the video a phrase like "high voltage transient breakdown test". It's really the most important, rare to find, and interesting part of the video. Without such keywords UA-cam fails to show your video to a target audience. I found it just because people posted the link to it with proper description and keywords.
I'm amazed the channel has attracted as many followers as it has. It's larger now than I had ever expected. The goal has never been to grow the channel or to use it as a source of income. I really only advertise it on the EEVBLOG.com forum.
@@joesmith-je3tq You make unique and very useful video content by testing multimeters like in a large branded safety lab. Furthermore, without your efforts, chinese cheapies would never been tested. You absolutely deserve more viewers and subscribers. (And by the way, "high voltage breakdown" is a nice clickbait. 😁)
@@Sentinel-1 I'm glad you are finding them useful. Beware the trap of coming to the conclusion that these tests have anything to do with the safety ratings of the meter. They certainly don't. Perhaps read the FAQ to get some idea about what you are watching. Part of the problem with the channel growing is I have to spend more and more time correcting peoples misconceptions. I have no reason to clickbait people or to try and create drama around the channel. It's just a lot of boring benchmarks except for the few people who want to see it.

Have you ever tested the Surpeer AV4? It is available exclusively on Amazon, a 20000 count, 4 1/2 digit multimeter with a dual display, and many high end features for only $36.99 at the present time. There unfortunately seems to be only a few videos on it, I would love to see it subjected to these destructive tests (just to see how good it actually is)

4 1/2 digits? Comes with temp probe and says freq. goes to 20Mhz. There's a black version (Banggood $39. Search on HY-19E 20000 Counts NCV) Also, there's a B model for $8 less (6000 count, same ugly ANENG blue shell).
Yes, that was the rendering I saw and what prompted me to post. Why they would think having the transient run through more than half the board length is a good idea, beyond me. Maybe the same designer who worked on the 8002/8.

Judging by that hole you blew in the COB, I think we have a pretty definitive answer of where it's breaking down, LOL.
I would have set the other camera up had I known.
Even better, Chronos 1.4 high-speed cam's will be shipping production models at the end of this month. They run $2,999 or you could offer Dave a silver dollar for his... (Lucky guy got it for nothing and we haven't seen anything from it in a while, funny how idea's fade..)
When I saw the designers website, I offered to buy one of the original prototypes, bugs and all. He declined my offer but I was not aware they were being made to use as an advertisement tool. The problem is, I do not believe it would be fast enough really see the whole event unfold. My guess is still just a flash.
All these sidetests are proof that this is a good all round meter, in next video joe will try to boil eggs with it.
Apart from uA measurement that is anyway useless in any meter its a desent thing, full 4 digits makes it fully usable and all this high voltage warnings are also useless - who measures above 1000v with such meter, go buy joes Brymen bm869s 300£ meter for measuring once in a lifetime above 1000v, yes thats the way of thinking.

I helped you by bringing you down to planet earth, use a meter within its specs and dont create mythical conditions. Next you will compare it with weather sealed devices? Dont play god, other people have brains too.

I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are not just trolling and are really just ignorant. You have a brain, use it. Learn something about what you are viewing then post.

Why? It uses the same basic front end as the others. I doubt they have started using better materials for the lens. Is there something unique about it?

I am really curious how these meters comply with safety standards hold up under real world use.
There is a link in the description that points to a spreadsheet showing all of meters I have tested. You may want to also read the FAQ as it seems you feel these tests have something to do with safety.

If a meter does not hold up to a "robustness test" and fails to give an accurate reading then it is not trustworthy and therefore, it is not safe.

I have never tried to get a meter certified and really am not sure what is all involved. I have had a look at the standards and written some questions to various manufactures about them and received conflicting answers. If you were to flip your logic and feel that if a meter did hold up to my tests and continued to provide accurate results that it was somehow safe, that would be wrong. All we can really say is under these set of test conditions, some meters fair better than others.
No, I'm not inferring the ones that survived your testing are safe... but maybe safer than the ones that failed after being bit the piezo grill ignitor.
The work I do makes me more concerned about my meter lying to me.
This is based on personal experience and the memory of grabbing a 480 volt line because my meter told me it was dead. It was partially my fault but I will never own another UEI product.
The more I read about the cat 3 and cat 4 safety standards... well... I am pretty sure the violent plasma balls people fear will more than likely make their way out of the meter leads. But then again, I don't know, I have never seen a meter get hit by high enough transient voltage to blow one up in normal use. I have seen them stop working
while checking voltage on large 3 phase mors but I didn't do an autopsy to determine the cause.
For me, personally, having a meter that can survive being dropped on concrete, survive high voltage in the continuity and ohms range and last a few hundred hours on a battery (or set of batteries) is more of a priority.

No way it would meet the specs they claim. I am not an accredited lab but I would bet the creepage on the fuses alone would never make it. Why is that even a question?
I do not believe it meets CAT ratings at all, similarly to uni-t designs, my question is only about what is most essential for hobbyist like DC/AC/R/C for who this meter, usually much below 250VAC.
Oh, I just assumed specs meant CAT ratings. I have never checked the meters I run to see if they meet their other published specs. It would take a fair amount of time and I am not a cal house. To do it right, I would really need to setup for it.
I have posted some information on the box I use to check them but I really use this as a basic functional test only.
BTW, there are some UNI-T made meters that have been independently certified for the 61010. It seems they offer a GS certified UT61E.
What wire do you like for your hv leads? I recently acquired a supply capable of 5kv and before I mess with it I want to put together a good set of leads.
I don't really have any high voltage leads. I just use that wire I showed when I was testing the multimeter test leads. The one coming off the generator is coax.

I checked and its Belden PN# 09058899002. This is 18AWG and has a working voltage of 5KV. This is why you see me tape it in some cases. I've used solid core spark plug wire before as a cheap source. I looked into getting some better wire but the spool sizes were more than I could ever use.

I'm pretty sure the Chinese would actually made that meter pass the claimed CAT ratings if they only spend like $5 more in materials. They clearly have the ability to make really nice stuff but also have this weird habit to skimp on something crucial which brings the whole house down.
It may very well pass the claimed CAT ratings. I have no idea. Well, I doubt those fuses would be allowed. So we need to put HRC fuses in there at about the cost of the meter... Wait, where is the room coming from??? Say the engineering time is free. Who is paying to have it certified? That's not free. Sounds like a lot more than $5. Read the FAQ. Nothing I show on this channel is related to safety. For the most part, I am only concerned with how electrically robust they are. Now could they make it more robust for an added $5 in parts and ignoring the engineering costs, seems so.
