Upstream: Risk vs Reward

- FPV drone flight up a beautiful stream towards a cinematic waterfall in British Columbia. Flying over water can be risky - It was tough to find a place that I had video the entire length of the clip, and video was pretty bad near the waterfall - Plus, something went haywire at the top when I tried to switch to the back camera to come down the river backwards - my controls didn't switch over properly and I landed about halfway up the waterfall, in a spot that looked impossible to reach. A classic drone crash/fail.
Thankfully, my friend was feeling pretty brave and climbed up the side of the waterfall and managed to get the drone back. A huge thank you to him - give him some love on his channel here:

Randy Randy is the MAN!!!
Ya for sure. I probably would have killed myself trying to get that.
Nice flying with the Cinewoop. Looked like trouble part way up the shitz creek when you bumped the fern at 0:36. Great spot!! Thanks for showing me.
Thanks! Ya, a bit of a moment there, but it doesn't hold a candle to the trouble at 1:40 :) Thanks for your help!
Any time my friend
Epic flight and rescue! Makes me want a cinewhoop!!👍
Do it!!!! :)
Nice to have "people" :) awesome footage in the beginning!
So true ! Thanks Paul :)
Dang, you owe him a nice $25 dinner... because that was seriously risking his neck or some scrapped knees on some slippery, dangerous rocks... having to get down there in it. Plus not losing it in the stream with it slipping off the stick - skillz.
Yes, I sure do !!!
Very cool
Randy to the rescue! Glad you got it back!
Thanks! Ya, I was pretty worried - I could see in the goggles that the video was going out, and we couldn't find it at all... saw it just by accident way up on the waterfall. Randy is the hero of this story, that's for sure!
Beauty, reminds me of my childhood playing near streams and creeks. I want to get the DJI digital system and see how far I can get. Glad you got your quad back, any damage?
I *think* it's ok. I dried it out and haven't tried it yet, but it's pretty much all conformal coated except for the camera.
You've got a friend in Randy, that's for sure. Where is this spot? Don't even care about flying it, just looks really nice.
It's up in Duncan
Can you tell us your tips for best finding a quad lost like this
Usually I do this in order:
1. Try to look for it (duuuh)
2. If I can't see it, I wait for a couple of minutes until the beeper starts going off (I use a dronekeeper -it beeps after the drone stops moving for 2 mins, ie when you crash).
3. If no beep, I take the omni antenna off my goggles and put on a super directional - I try to locate it via the signal
4. I have the escs set up to start beeping after 10 mins - if none of the other methods worked, and the escs are still alive, I might find it from the beeping
5. I try to arm it & listen for the props.
6. If it's lost power and the beeper doesn't work (like what happened here because of all the water) , then basically I just look (sometimes for hours!).
How lucky you are !!
YES - so lucky. I knew I was near the waterfall, but didn't realize that I was right in it. We weren't even looking right near the waterfall, I just caught it out of the corner of my eye when I was looking up the side of the hill.
@@MactacFPV Yeah. In the video, we see how much a cinewhoop lack of responsiveness when we have to react quickly. In fact, it is a flying iron.
So true - but that wasn't the problem. I have 2 fpv cams on the quad, one on the front and one on the back. I wanted to go up to the waterfall, reverse & come down the stream backwards... When I switch cameras, my controls normally swap as well (because flying backwards is opposite left & right), but for some reason it didn't work as it usually does & my controls were reversed. By the time I figured it out, I was in the waterfall :(
Hope the quad made it
Yep, it seems to be fine, at least so far !
WHAT THE FUCK...?
Who are you dude..? Freaky skills bro..!
Awesome...
Haha, thanks :)
Faaaaaack... That was awesome until shit hit the fan
thanks man !!
That was killer! Stoked to see that you went back there! Almost wish I skipped out on riding to go fly haha! Too many hobbies!
Thanks! Haha I know the feeling.... too much stuff to do!
Great video! Really liked the narrative, it made it all the more exciting. Randy, you're the hero of the day!
Well thank you, kind internet stranger ;) Yes, I probably would have killed myself up there!
Through the tunnel!!👍👍
