Absolutely love the SBDC 061 & 063! Really hope these are in stock when In a couple weeks when I am able to buy them. Thank you Mark for the awesome buying experience on the Seiko SBDC031 sumo that I bought! I look forward to Wearing it!
I once read something about watches, and it went something like this, "The Japanese always keep the best products (or versions of products) for themselves." This watch really speaks to me. Had my eye on the Sumo, but I now have a new love. Particularly love the shape of the hands. LOVE that big arrow hour hand. For the most part, I'm only into dive watches, and they must have solid hands, round hour markers (round markers keep time better than watches with any other shape), sapphire crystal, and coin edge bezels. Love the overall retro look. Yes, I would love to own a Tudor and/or a Sinn however, this Seiko is something I can realistically buy, without it costing THIS member of the proletariat more than a used car. People are typing that, 'There are other (dive) watches they'd rather have for $1000.' I'm curious as to what dive watches are a better value, for under $1000? I'm always willing to be enlightened.
Alderman Fred C. Davis I know this is probably late. But some good picks are the longines hydroconquest, Christopher ward trident pro c60, Hamilton frogman (personal favourite). Overall I’m a firm believer that a collection is not complete without a seiko.
I got the new Bulova Oceanographer! Worth every penny at $596! Bulova has done well with the Oceanographer and Moonwatch! Keep up the great work! Killing it!
Certina DS Action Diver currently for $495 on joma. Seiko went out of their way in the past few years inflating prices like crazy. Gone are the $200 Monsters and $300 sarbs, and so many other affordable great watches.
I really like these and I think Seiko finally realized that they were under-valuing themselves. $1000 is a lot but don’t forget, this is a manufacture caliber. Just because we’re used to it usually being found cheaper doesn’t discount that fact. Now, I’m glad I got my Alpinist for $400. Imagine what they’d charge if they released the same watch over again now. Probably $750-1000. Wow.
I agree. The minute I heard they were discontinuing the Alpinist I was fortunate enough to get one for $399 from Amazon. Now I wish I had bought a couple and made a few $'s !!
Marc, what do you think about the argument that hardlex or acrylic is better for divers watch for impact resistance reasons ? Seiko is telling us that hardlex is a advantage for their diver watches but when they release mid range or higher end watches, they use sapphire and point to it as an advantage. I've never had a sapphire break on me and had some harsh impact and when you are underwater it seems less likely to get a high speed impact with movement restriction. On another hand I've scratched pretty much all my hardlex so I'm replacing them with sapphire now.
I love the way this watch looks. It's beautiful from the case to the dial and hands. The only thing I hate about it is the size. 44mm is just too much. On my wrist it would wear well no problem, but it think making it 40 would look much better overall. Also, what's with the ceramic bezel? Some people (myself included) don't like the ceramic bezel and it's shine, it makes a watch that's not dressy look dressy and despite this not being ceramic it is also too glossy for my taste and that is another thing that I dislike about it.
Let's clear this up, drilled Lugz only makes changing leather, rubber or Natos easy, bracelets not so much, you have to press both sides of the spring bars simultaneously, so unless you have a specialty tool or your an octopus it's actually more difficult than the standard means of removing bracelets
Love your stuff.Just jumped on the Seiko wagon and gotten a solar.I know but what people will say but its the way forward? Great looking thing and arrives next week.Wanted a Seiko for years but wanted a stayer piece that should serve me well.
Hi Mark, Could you do do a video comparison with SUMO? They seem very similar, and the Sumo is cheaper. The only difference seems to be hardlex instead of saphire, and slightly different case shape. Or maybe a triple comparison : MM300, MM200, and Sumo. I have a SKX009 with nice Padi turtle dial and strapcode bracelet, and I'm very happy of that mod. It feels more luxurious than standard SKX. But I recently put on my wrist the new green MM300, and it was absolutely fantastic. It wore much smaller than I would have though because of the shape and 20mm lug. But I can't justify spending 3000+$ on watch at the moment, so I would consider either Sumo, SBDC061 or even 053.
David Vilder I just recently got a Sumo and bro definitely save your money and get the Sumo. It’s perfect and flawless. This is a nice watch but to me the Sumo has a nicer and better case . The movement in the Sumo is the same as this watch . I did ad an endmill upgraded bracelet and this one has a sapphire crystal but to me that’s not worth a $300 price increase.
Hey Marc, looking for a stainless steal strap for the blue one of these. Do you guys sell them separately or any idea where I can buy it? Does the strap of the black ones fits to the blue one?
Hi Marc! Is this the same as sbdc053 ?? I can only see difference in the crown position and maybe the tone of the blue one. Which other differences do they have to last year watches?
I think the 6r15 is probably better than ETA 2824. As far as I know, they don't have winding issues. ETAs do. Reversing wheels are the weak spot, and almost all of my ETAs which are only a few years old are starting to have problems. Really disappointed. Lazy Swiss should fix the problem, winding should not hurt your watch movement FFS.
I noticed on the sbdc 051 the bracelet doesn’t match up with the case well at all, almost like it was a spare bracelet thrown on. This bracelet matches up with the case nicely, what’s the deal with that?
FallingTitan ah cool man. Im a little iffy on trying the wheel swap. I seriously wish Seiko would offer the nh35 and 36 movements with the option of a 4 oclock crown lol. On the other hand, i am not super obessed with handwinding and hacking, so theres that
I think this watch is pretty nice but the price tag bothers me. I own a Sumo and with that being half the price, I would never pay for this knowing the Sumo comes so close in quality for some much less (in my opinion). I do like the clasp on this one a lot.
Hi Mark. Any idea when Seiko are going to ditch the ancient 7-series movements? Other cheaper entry-level watches have hacking and hand-winding using the NH-series movements so why don’t the actual company?
Imma guess thpse of that know, are a very small portion of watch buyers. Plus, i really do not get the obession of those of us in the know, with hacking and handwinding.
Hey Mark what Seiko do you like more. The SBDC061 Vs SBDC051 ? Something about that domed Sapphire on the 051 that I love and the case profile of the 061 is beautiful.
Please help. I have the Special Edition SPB097J1 and I am 95% sure its the same case as this one, otherwise known as the baby marine master? Can anyone confirm?
For 1000 USD I would have like to see a more unique finishing on the case, sharper lines and contrast polishing. This one is to rounded on the sides reminds me of the SKX.
I WANT to like the 061 and was ------------->|| this close to pulling the trigger however, for $1000 I MUST have an engraved bezel, as opposed to simply printed. I overstand that Seiko has the heritage and they have a large advertising budget, but I think Steinhart represents a much better value.
Somebody pls explain why these two watches sell for about the same price on eBay (about 800). If the metal bracelet is $150 more than the silicone strap, the final price should reflect that. BTW, I bought the 063 and now I'm hunting for a bracelet. Will end up paying $970 + tax for the watch and 2 straps. $930 if I use the silicone for another watch. Still too much
From what I understand, Strapcode makes a bracelet for this watch, and probably superior to Seiko's. They usually have different bracelets styles to choose from, you can ask Marc, he carries Strapcode.
@@c331hunt but with leather and rubber id be fine. probably better to squeeze a 22mm strap on it. i use mainly leather straps though, but it dont make sense on a diver. maybe the blu one that comes with it will be fine in 20mm. im waiting for my blue hole edition :)

Nice picks for the Store Mark! To be honest, at $1000 ceramic insert shouldn't be an option, but a must.
Yes. Agree with you.
Are there SBDC061's with optional ceramic insert? Or am I missing something?
@@a_single_white_female no it's not. The stock insert is lacquered aluminium. The only insert in ceramic that exists comes from yobokies

The Seiko Baby Marine Master are very beautiful watches. I prefer the one with the bracelet.
Coin edge bezel and sapphire crystal is awesome! $1000 though, I can think of many options I'd rather have under $1000. Orient Triton comes to mind.
I hear ya.
Totally what I was thinking.
Certina DS Action Diver currently for $495 on joma. Seiko went out of their way in the past few years inflating prices like crazy. Gone are the $200 Monsters and $300 sarbs, and so many other affordable great watches.

twstrchasr they are still available
repo4 Yes I know they are. I was meaning before the prices went up after it was announced that the model was going to be discontinued.
In-house movement does not equal super good. I like the 6r movements but to me it is not better than a 2824... just my feelings.
Lol, yet more stunning Seiko's. Thanks Mark 👍👍

Sapphire all the way
*I intend on buying one of these in the future.*
*It's weird that the SPB077 goes for nearly $200 more, than the SBDC061*
That is odd.
How great it’d be if they also offered these in a 39

The lack of a signed crown is a disappointment at this price level. Do you know if a SARB059 crown would be compatible with or without a stem swap?

Squale 30 Atmos vs sbdc061? Which do you reach for? Seiko a bit cheaper at retail but both can be had around the same price point
Regarding the ceramic bezel, I think is better to have this kind of bezel than a ceramic as Tissot's Seastar that just feels and looks quite cheap

Hi Mark, thanks for the review. I would love to get the 063 but I am not keen on the strap. Is it possible to buy it with the metal bracelet instead?
Not currently.
Nice long thin lugs which is an oddity for a seiko. Vintage styling and a nice handset. This is a very nice looking watch
Hi Mark I hope you can get your hands on Marine Master 300s and tell us on diferent model codes/ part numbers, tnx.

What is the thinnest Seiko Diver?

Sbdc061&spb077j1 at the back also made in Japan?
Looks gorgeous! The way the lugs are extended reminds me of a chubby skx013. I just love the new Seiko bracelets. Great review!
I was getting a Sinn 556 next month, I think I may have just changed my mind..
Would the rubber be ok to wear with business casual in an office setting? I like the bracelet but it makes the watch quite heavy.

Not really fair to say, 2824s run at 28,800bph and generally go for about 10 years before issue - also are so much more accurate than 6R15s

Meh. You skinny wrist guys have a ton of watches to choose from. These 44mm divers are too SMALL for me and my 8.25" wrists.
For that money it needs a better movement than the 6R15 which is from the Stone Age.
