    Nicely done. My father was a pipe, cigar and tobacco dealer and I was working part time in his store when I was 12. I have just started smoking a pipe again and enjoyed my first pipe smoke in years. I have a very old Missouri corn cobber and filled it with some Mac Baren Plumcake Navy cut. That was enjoyable! Next I will try my antique pipe from Turkey. Thanks for a great video!

    Great video explaining how you break in your pipe. I am from just outside of New Orleans. I enjoy watching your videos. I have my pipes custom made, and the inside of the bowl is coated with a carbon like paint and it helps when breaking in the pipe.
    Happy smokes. ..

    First time I've heard this technique, it actually started to make more and more sense as it went on. Protect the top half, then finish the bottom. Going to try it for sure.

    I always use a burley to break in my pipes. Sutliff burley delight, Carter Hall, or Lane burley delight without bite. Good video. I never use honey, and I start off with tobacco in the mid point. Smoke that until ashes. Load up above the last level and smoke that down. Then fill to the top and smoke until ashes. I’ll smoke the new one everyday for a week until it is broken in. I clean the pipe and let it sit in the pipe stand for a month. I’ve been a piper for 30 + years and I prefer Aston pipes. ( jimmy Craig makes a better Ashton than Bill did).
    That’s how I do it. I’m very careful with the lighting and always, always take my time. Everyone has their own way. I guess that’s the joy of the pipe. Enjoy.

    You can try and use those churchwarden cleaners all you want, but on a pipe like Gandalf's in Lord of the Rings -they shall not pass.

      Ethan Thank you! That would be a real long series. So many pipes and tobaccos, I still have confusion on all that myself. There's a lot of information on pipe tobacco out there. Start with tobaccoreviews.com and for pipes, just look at as many as you can and chose what catches your eye and price range. The rest is just experimenting with things.

    I've been a cigar smoker for years but I'm venturing in to the world of pipe smoking because I've always enjoyed being around the aromas a pipe smoker gives off. Trying to learn all that I can before receiving my new pipe kit. It's confusing to me because there seems to be a lot, and I mean a lot of different opinions about how to break in a new pipe. Just watched another video that pretty much said just the opposite of what this video said about filling the bowl on a virgin pipe. Adding to the confusion is that they all have pretty convincing arguments for their methodology. I'm totally lost, lol.

    We talk about breaking in a new pipe, but no one talks about seasoning the bowl. And yes, this can also be done with your well used or estate pipes. Here's how it works: first, give the pipe a good scrubbing. If an older pipe get rid of any excess cake build up or dottle (with cobs be gentle because they need a little pipe mud at the bottom). Next pack a full but loose amount of an aromatic such as cherry or vanilla. Smoke all the way down, tampering occasionally. Once cool, dump the ash and let the pipe set. Maybe an hour or two. Finally fill the bowl with a different blend, perhaps an American English or straight burley like Velvet. Light and smoke it down, dump ashes once cooled and let the pipe sit overnight. In the morning scrub out the bowl. Then it will be ready to go. Finding out this helps to eliminate bite and gives one a much smoother smoke.

    Thanks Mike, once a good learing video,
    I was always thinking the use of Burley forward blend advisable with new pipe, such as Mc Barens Golden Extra or PA- SWR Otc's, but again I gotta learn to properly to use my lighters, since obviously I'm somekind of expert in getting rims darkened, those bics and other might tour extremly fateful to rim (a la Ol Condger way)not to mention those of torch lighters,keep away of them. Thank you, and greets, Paul

    • @SmokinBriar
      @SmokinBriar  8 років тому +1

      Hello Paul. Yes sir, nothing can ruin a pipe faster than being careless with the lighter. Not only will over use of the lighter burn your pipe and pipe rim, but it will also ruin your tobacco and make it taste bad. Burley, being a blend that burns slow and cool is by far the best tobacco to use while breaking in a new pipe! Cheers my friend....and Stay away from those Bic and torch lighters!! LOL

    • @paulthescandinavian4992
      @paulthescandinavian4992 8 років тому

      Ok, even many seem like those Bic's but I do find them being rather treacherous,,has bad flame control

      Thanks for this suggestion, though I already got me that Peterson Lighter(silver striped $70) for indoor use and then if need arises for outdoor I have a Brass zippo with pipe insert, altough Xikar brand may offer even better value and equal quality? than Peterson lighter does, then we have that good value KiriBi Kabutos smokingpupes exclusive , definitely a good value I assume,

    I´m just now trying to craft my first own pipe from cherry wood. (bowl diameter is .787 x 1.181 inch. small bowl as i am not a frequent smoker) Is cherry any different from briar? And would it be wise to break it in with mixed aromatic tobaccos (like the VAUEN "himalaya blend")?

    • @SmokinBriar
      @SmokinBriar  7 років тому

      I would advise not using using cherry wood to make a pipe. Briar is very hard and fire resistant. Cherry, not so much. Just my opinion for what it's worth. Either way, have fun with it!

    @jbmopar1971 7 років тому +3

    Great I'm on the right path. When you pack the bowl the first few times do you use the three step method? I was advised to just pack the bowl to the top, not to tamp it, smoke it to the bottom, and then dump the ash. Not to clean the bowl, and repeat for about 7 smokes. I'm in the process of breaking in my first Savanelli unfinished and don't want to hurt the briar. Thank you my friend!

    • @SmokinBriar
      @SmokinBriar  7 років тому +1

      jbmopar1971 You can use the 3 step method for sure. With unfinished briar, you wanna smoke slow! And try not to relight the pipe much. Tamping is fine...that isn't gonna do anything bad.That bowl has no coating or cake yet and it can burn real easy. I would use a burley blend to break it in. I would clean the bowl after each smoke by gently wiping it out with a pipe cleaner folded in half. Don't be in a hurry in anyway! Good luck!

    • @SmokinBriar
      @SmokinBriar  7 років тому

      Cody Gardner Do you have the tobacco packed to tight in the bowl? That will block your airflow in the stem.

    • @oldmanprostte3574
      @oldmanprostte3574 7 років тому

      Smokin' Briar no i didn't at first just some leaves and I thought I might of packed it too tight so I scraped it out and tried to just suck air out of an empty bowl and nothing then I took apart my pipe and I looked in the stim and there was like a blockage so I tried to clean it and the end of my stem snapped and it was glued shut

    • @SmokinBriar
      @SmokinBriar  7 років тому

      Cody Gardner Wow...thats not good. Sounds like that pipe is ruined unless you put a new stem on it. Is it a nice pipe? You can have a new stem made for it, but it will cost you about $25-30 for it.

    • @oldmanprostte3574
      @oldmanprostte3574 7 років тому

      it was a 15 dollar pipe I bought at a smoke shop I drive a semi and was gonna be down for the evening so I figured I'd get a pipe reminds me of my grandpa when I actually got around to it I found out it glued they were already closed for the night I was just gonna try and find a cheap stim in the next town I go to

    • @SmokinBriar
      @SmokinBriar  7 років тому

      Cody Gardner I don't think you'll find just the stem and chances are it won't the pipe you have if you do find one. Try and find a rite-aid or Walgreens pharmacy. They both sell corn cob pipes and Dr. grabow pipes. Get one of those and try again. The corn cob pipes are less than $10 And the smoke great!
