This is always going to be a song I tie to a very specific person. We haven’t seen each other in 20 years and who knows where she is in the world. The relationship ripped me apart. It ripped her apart. And it took me so long to get over her. I kept playing this song over and over and over and over again. And she kept playing this song over and over and over and over again. It’s the theme song for that relationship. It’s the song that played the last night I ever saw her. And every time I listen to it, it hurts just the same. So many other people in my life and so many other relationships after her. And this is always going to be our song. I loved her. And I will always love her. Even though it had no chance of working out. I still hear her laugh. I remember both of us crying in each other’s arms. I remember her saying I love you. She said it one time and I still hear it. It took leaving the country and living continents away for months to begin to heal. 20 years later and I remember her. I wonder if she ever thinks about me.
Man, that last line resonates so much with me. The only person I ever really cared about (rightly or wrongly) I haven't even seen or heard about for nearly a decade now. I frequently wonder if she ever thinks about me, and it pains me not to know.

An ex who had a habit of trying to express feelings through music. Well I caught on to her narcissistic bs and played this one for her during the break up. She tried very hard not to cry, I still hope to this day she can turn her life around.

There are so many solid songs on this album. One of their last as the full original band, which makes it all the more nostalgic. Damnit, I changed again, Special delivery and Vultures are other standouts.

The way I always interpreted this lyric was him asking her: What was it that made you finally realise it would never work between us? What made you decide it was the (final) end? How did you know this was different from all the other break-ups?...That this one was final? (The earlier lyrics show that this couple had many 'break-ups' which never lasted).
