My favourite "human" moment from Bob's Burgers is in the bank robbery episode, where Bob gets the call to deliver burgers to the bank robber. The way the family reacts to his leaving for the bank is just beautiful, as at first they understand he has to do this, but when the time to go is actually there, they tell them they love him and almost don't let him go. Best cartoon ever, imho.

I love that episode, it's so uniquely wholesome as at first they're fine but quickly start to panic as they really do love Bob and don't wanna lose him. Then after all that Linda tops it off with _"Don't leave me with these freakin' kids, Bobby!"_ . Perfection.

I love bogs burgers I do. But the best cartoon ever is bojack horseman. I’m not sure if you only love bobs burgers cuz of the comedy and the family dynamic and I’m not sure if it translates directly to bojack. It’s a different show. It is comedic, hilariously so at points, but there’s so much more to it. But given the fact that it’s a show full of anthropomorphic animals it’s the most human show ever written. Do yourself a favor and try it out if you haven’t. It took me awhile to get into the first season and especially the first half of the first season, while still great with the hindsight knowledge of what’s to come it almost feels like a completely different show. The creator even mentioned this he said he thought he had to kind of trick audiences and slowly work in this deeper plot cuz he thought people wouldn’t be ready for it and would need to see something they were more familiar with like the simpsons or family guy. It however quickly takes off after that and by the end of the first season you’re hooked on this epic journey of character arcs that makes for some of the best storytelling I’ve seen in my life so far.

procrastinator547 Bob’s Burgers is an escape from daily life and a laugh at the little things. Bojack (i’ve only watched a few episodes) is really heavy and they do tone that down with the use of animals, but you have to be in a totally different mindset to watch it. Which isn’t bad, but more people are going to gravitate toward comedy on a daily basis

Was never a Simpsons fan but even shows I enjoy like American Dad or King of The Hill don't have that clear _"Yup...that's their kid"_ connection. So you really do see them as family, not just 5 characters stuck living together forever like Family guy.

Yeah I found out he worked on Home Movies and ofc Bob is Coach McGuirk. As for KOTH, I wasn't saying the dynamic is bad but that I see less of Hank in Bobby than in the Belcher family.
Some (okay many) families are like that, mine certainly was so whats most important to me in KOTH is that Hank doesn't dislike nor abuse Bobby for being different than him (or for just...existing like Cotton did), they're lack of mirroring each other is a big strength/draw to me. Hank doesn't fully understand him and does freak out at times but overall he tries to understand, support and even learn from him and continues to want to find common interests.

Most of the Belchers are different in the first two seasons when they were finding their footing but that's OK. Bob was a lot more aggressive (not violent, but he would get angry a lot more) and Louise was a lot more demented and mean-spirited than she is now. Gene was a lot smarter but I don't think he was quite as entertaining yet. Tina's awkwardness is used a lot more in the early seasons. Linda I think is pretty much the same character throughout since John Roberts is just imitating his mom, which he's done for years so he already had her down. It's not a bad thing, since it does show that the characters can change and grow without being flanderized

I think it's interesting to see naturalistic elements (like stumbling over words) becoming more common. That's definitely something you didn't see decades ago. But I'd still argue that your example of Lisa the Greek misses something important: at the beginning, Lisa is making an effort to relate to Homer in a way that is new to her. It feels unnatural and affected to us when she imitates his responses and tries to go along with his moral logic because it feels that way to Lisa.

The reason why Bob's Burgers is so good is that it's realistic but overlaps a little bit with fantasy. The scenario in Weekend at Morts is bizarre enough to never actually happen in real life but the end scene where they almost burn him alive makes it feel realistic. The childrens shenanigans in the glue episode are on point because it feels plausible. The Crawl Space has the side stories all weave together in a fun masterpiece. The children don't act like adults, the adults act like adults, and a happy ending isn't always forced. Lousie and Linda fight repeatedly but it's not dysfunctional, etc.

I actually really loved this analysis. I'm going to share it with a few folk I think will enjoy it. We're a bunch of Bob's Burgers fans. The family interactions are so good. My hubby and I were just commenting how Bob makes faces and quiet sounds of disapproval when Tina goes off on butts or Jimmy Jr or boys, but he never actually tells her to stop. In the episode the hormone-imus he actually counsels her about going to a kissing party in a very thoughtful, caring, and accepting way. The first season had some bits of tone I disliked, but there's so many great episodes. Like... 95% of the episodes are great. Like, every single story arc in the episode Bob Actually is so wholesome.
Bob's Burgers honestly makes me think of The Addams Family way more than the Simpsons . Odd and unique, but loving and supportive. Even when there are conflicts within the family, the resolutions are so sincere and honest. I love Bob's Burgers so much.

Like how the standards of fight scenes have gotten so much higher over time that an episode of Star Trek original series looks absolutely ridiculous during the fight scenes. Back when they originally came out, the fight scenes weren't as good anywhere, so you didn't have to do more to communicate the same point, if that makes sense.

I think Bob's Burgers is the most realistic and accurate portrayal of family dynamics on TV. Maybe it's because my family is also super weird, but yeah. All the things you said! And this is coming from a person that thinks season 4 of the Simpsons is fairly close to a perfect season of comedy.

    • @oreokitty333
      @oreokitty333 4 роки тому +5

I think everyone eventually becomes super weird around the people who they feel most comfortable around. The dynamic I have with my parents is stiff and, for lack of a better term, show-offy, because I've never felt comfortable around them. They were abusive in my childhood and I hold them at arm's length (as opposed to completely cutting them off) as an adult for familial political reasons. But, my best friend of eight years? My partner who I live with and love? More inside jokes and weird turns of phrase than I could ever list off. I think it's just part of letting more of your authentic self show, being more comfortable just letting the random, whacky ideas that flow through your brain come out. And so, yeah, I think being weird with your family isn't really weird at all and is part of the reason why the Belchers are so relatable :)

With the Simpsons four of the five main family members have a relationship that’s designed to work antagonistically to create conflict. Bart winds up Lisa and Homer, and causes trouble for Marge either through this or for her in some other way. Homer makes a selfish decision Marge and the kids have to follow along with or deal with the results of. Lisa’s soapbox tendencies can clash with Homer, most prominently in Lisa the Vegetarian (although that episode does have a moral about tolerance from and for both sides). In contrast the Belchers while they have different personalities it feels more like a proper family and less a conflict generator. Bob is the most practical, Linda lives more in the moment, Tina is a hormonal teenager, Gene has no filter and Louise puts on a front of bravado because she doesn’t like opening up emotionally. Yet they start and end episodes with affection for each other even when some of them come into conflict with each other. You can see why Bob and Linda are together, as opposed to Homer and Marge where she’s more give and he’s more take.
Both families are also poor, with storylines around their lack of money and ways to get more or finding alternative solutions. For the Simpsons it’s more likely to be played for laughs, not helped by Homer’s extensive and well populated work history and his very on again off again employment at the power plant (tying into his selfishness). The less than optimal condition of the house (it’s even used for a gag in an early THoH were the lead paint it’s covered in made it an effective nuclear bomb shelter), the school as well is a punching bag of too many budget crises jokes. For the Belchers it plays in more subtly. The kids don’t have phones, Bob has a flip phone, the household doesn’t have a lot in terms of technology. Whether they’ll make the rent is a recurring problem and in the movie the bank loan covering the restaurant equipment being due within the week is a big worry for Bob.

Simpsons was the most relatable family at the time it was created because what was the norm was sitcoms like Full House that depicted family as picture perfect.

Part of the reason why bob's burgers is my new favorite family adult cartoon is because it genuinely feels like they care and love eachother which includes emotional touching moments. Like I enjoyed family guy and American dad early on because they cared but now in the newer seasons it's like everyone is practically lying, cheating, and constantly at each other's throats.

I'm actually kinda sad because I know that Bob's Burgers won't last forever. It's just one of those shows where I 100 percent wish they would keep making episodes forever because it has never had to resort to shock value or quickly outdated memes like Family Guy. I really liked American Dad until it started following suit. You can make adult shows without it being overly graphic and using unneeded swear words. I wrote a short play back in high school that was inspired by the family dynamic this show has and people loved it when it was performed.

I always thought it better for a show to finish when it's good than keep going until it's bad. The flipside of "always leave them wanting more" is "never leave them wanting less", so saying goodbye to the Belchers at their prime would be sad, but ultimately the best way

Eh that's kind of a lose lose situation. It'd be amazing to see you're favourite shows go on forever, but the thing is no matter how good a show is, Flanderisation will eventually happen. The writers will eventually run out of ides and jokes for the characters.

After about season 5 the simpsons stopped feeling human to me. But weren't supposed to feel as real or grounded as other shows. The minute homer tried to jump Springfield Gorge, failed, survived the fall, was picked up by an ambulance, dropped from it, fell again and survived again is when the simpsons embraced comedic absurdity to me. Bob's burgers feels more natural to compare to King of the Hill than the simpsons.

I adore Bob's Burgers, and thoroughly think that it's a better show than modern day Simpsons, but even from this perspective, I feel like you were a little harsh to the Simpsons examples here, especially considering that it's a totally classic episode- a comparison with a modern Simpsons episode would have felt fairer. The Simpsons examples still felt really natural to me too considering their contexts- Lisa not knowing sports and making an effort to relate to Homer in that first scene, for example- it's completely in character for both of them.

  • @HughDingwall

I wonder if the age of The Simpsons as a franchise is a factor here. A lot of the stuff you mention liking about Bob's Burgers in comparison seems like it's a feature of a newer batch of adult-friendly if not necessarily adult-oriented cartoon shows. I mean, The Simpsons has definitely changed over time, but I wonder how much of its fundamental DNA is still built of stuff from the early 90s playbook.

The personalities of the families are created from very different positions too. The writer of the simpsons relates to all the characters, and imparts a piece of himself in all the characters, which is a great way to show disparity between people in a linked way, so we can see both sides. Bobs on the other hand is based on the writers experience with people he knows, totally different personalities that he probably likes and naturally get along with each other. If you're a fan of the mbti sides of the mind and such, you could think of marge and lisa being the main ego, and homer and bart being the unconscious and subconscious personalities tied to the main. Where as in bobs burgers, there is some overlap xntp/entj/isfp but tina and linda are wild cards inxp/exfp, being particularly dull and exciting respectively to unbalance the dynamic and make it feel more lifelike. I really liked your video, thanks very much!

One of my favourite kinds of bobs burgers episodes are the ones where it’s just the belchers in their home talking to each other. Like in season 6 episode 1, where Bob and Linda tell the kids how they met, and then Louise Gene and Tina take turns making up stories about why they thought would have happened if bob didn’t have a moustache. Genuinely sweet and funny and it shows they’re a real human family

I think what I didn’t like about other cartoons like the Simpsons is the way lines are delivered. Especially with the Simpsons where it feels robotic and unrealistic to me. No offence of course if you enjoy that. But Bob’s Burgers has such realistic speech. Bob especially is always stumbling over words and messes up sometimes and does awkward chuckles it’s hilarious. Very human feeling characters. Really feels like how my family talks and that’s definitely a reason why we still love the show 10 years after discovering it

Great overview man. If I may, I find Homer to be relatable sometimes because often Homer isn't aware of how he could improve. I as a dad can relate to both in different ways. There are times when I realize I'm blindsided by my own flows like Homer and ocassionally Homer does become aware he's not doing right. The Simpsons is a more exaggerated world. It has no subtly which I always keep in mind but when he does realise finally he's hurt the feelings of his kids, he doesn't know really how to ammend but does try even if in his absurd ways. One line that always strikes me is from the Christmas episode that I consider their half hourndebut. Lisa points out to her aunts that her dad shares the same frailties as any human being and expresses they wouldn't talk about him like that in front of her about him. There is alot of good Dad and daughter episodes within the Simpsons. My favorite is when we see a full grown Lisa of the future standing by her dad over some pig cufflinks even though it means the would be wedding is off and at the end it returns to the present and her and Homer walk away from the camera and she's excited to hear him telling her about all the fun he had while she was occupied with a glimpse of the future. There is also the episode where he exhausts himself do she can have a pony. Homer is a buffoon but that at times can be relatable. Someimes a dad frustrates himself hoping to get it right and fail alot of times before soemthing connects after every attempt prior.
Bob's world is less absurd but I as a newcomer to Bob's Burgers also find relatable things about him. The want for a more wholesome enviroment. The ability to not over react and err caution when conflicted with over something his kids have done that he wished they hadn't. This is not to diminish the great points made here. BOB'S Burgers is really good and I look forward to watching every season for better familiarity.

In the 90's family life was boring so the Simpsons was trying to pep it up a bit. Now there is almost nothing left resembling a family, people today live more like roommates, rarely ever talking when there isn't a screen in their face. Bob's Burgers is in a fictional world where everyone isn't glued to a screen and they actually talk to each other. A fantasy still held by some.

I've been watching the entire series of Bob's Burgers in a daily basis over the last 6 months or so and I strongly agree that the characters are deeper and more interesting and likeable than characters are in most adult-aimed sitcoms. While the personalities are painted in fairly broad strokes, they are able to learn and grow without losing their core traits, making choosing a favorite character much harder than just whoever you laugh at the most (Homer).

I remember getting so turned off of the whole hateful family dynamic that was seen in later Family Guy and quite a few other comedies. Like, most of the time it's undeserving or just unnecessary. Bob's Burgers just threw that out the window. You don't have to have a show full of spiteful and angsty characters to get people interested. Being toxic is understandable for some shows to get a point across but when it's done just due to laziness then that's just lame.
