Dude... . You all's energy at like 830 minutes is what made me have to have this comment... It's when you know you did something right.. Haven't even finished the video but there is where it let's me know something is right...
I lived off-grid in the mountains, 8 miles from the nearest road, for a decade. There was a small spring at the bottom of the property. At first I would fill a 5 gallon jug with water, tie it to a backpack frame and carry it back up to camp. Eventually I came up with a 1,000 gallon wooden tank that I mounted 15 foot up between three pine trees. The repurposed an old generator motor to run a pump, and pumped water up to the tank. For hot water in the summer I used a 100 foot coil of black PVC pipe laying on the ground in the sun. It would sometimes get too hot and I would need to drag half of the coil into the shade. For hot water in the winter I built a wood stove using construction bricks, and put a coil of copper tubing in the flu. It was amazingly sufficient and I would need to careful not to build too big of a fire in it or it would turn the water into steam. It also doubled as an outdoor stove for cooking on. --- Even though I moved on-grid 20-some years ago, have grid electricity and a nice well for water, and now live the closest I have lived to "civilization" (15 miles to the nearest town) I still do a lot of things the same as I learned to do while living off-grid.
I love hearing about your ingenuity back when you were off-grid, and how you still use it today! Some things are just better when done the old fashioned way. All the best!
presently my arthritis prevents me from travelling one day though that may change & then I will have the help to make the trip. But it looks a very interesting & friendly 4 days in the woods The food looks fantastic Hmm. Les England
I love that you have a little industry going on of carpentry, leather works, baking, butchering cooking, grilling and a few other survival things without buildings, because when a group of collonists set up for a new village they have to get started right out of their wagons and tents and then before long they have shops and houses, and then a village. I wonder if there is an approved layout that everybody uses so there is a town square and courthouse so a heirarchy of criminal corruption and can begin.
Well I survived alone and off-grid for 3 months at a remote cattle station, 100km to nearest town, 40km to next property. I was there as a caretaker while the owners were away for 3-4 weeks at horse events and we got record ran and they couldn't get back in to the homestead and of course I couldn't get out. Lots more to the story, but the main difference to your area is that apart from the recent rain, the 1 million acre place is effectively an arid desert.
I used a similar system for a toilet, I used dry dirt not wood chips and no bag in the five gallon bucket. I just buried the contents when it was full. Worked rather well. Only used it for about 8 months, but now I have a real place to live.
A great cover of your " mash- up"! Abbi n her truck saved the day!!!! Girl's teaching team...you did great! * Rose * you outdid yourself with your kitchen/ food prep/ meals served!!!! Wow!! - Jeff/ Dave- what can I say??? Lol! Awesome 👌! Thanks for sharing 👍!!
I have been to middle of nowhere in Nova Scotia, as a child. My parents took all of us 7 kids on a 1600 mile road trip from Michigan ( an incredible feat in and of itself🙏) . Stayed in a campground in Margaree Bay(?) on Cape Breton while visiting relatives . Met a friendly local there who took us on a ride in his Land Cruiser off road. Seen some beautiful scenery and met a family he knew that lived off-grid, like real” Hillbillies” as we referred to them back then. That little excursion left us in awe and with permanent positive memories. Beautiful Province you got there 😃
So. I just found your UA-cam page a few nights ago. So refreshing. I love watching all your work. You guys are doing an amazing job at making off grid living look do able. May God Bless your while family
The pump up yard sprayers make fantastic outdoor showers. Get the 3 or 5 gallon tank with the hose, you can just spray off and easily rinse out those nooks and crannies.
Not sure how you did it, BUT Rose is not only GEORGEOUS, but she cooks AND bakes!!!! Good stuff !!! New camp is awesome, I am very sure people will want to visit and learn.
What area are you in? You look to be slightly north of us in Ontario? You did what we did. Wall tent to bunkie. Portable toilet, etc. Secret is to cope somehow and then organize over time. Gives me hope to see your current progress. Good job guys! I do remember taking a trail once and at the end was beer and candy apples. I kid you not.
..have you seen the Earthship houses..they are exactly what ur talking about wanting to build..they have the south facing windows..most of it is under ground or a berm home ...which grow food inside like a part home part green house
I was just thinkin for ya hot water system why dont ya get some steel and make a grate to go over a hole in the ground where ya fire is but for ya hot water tank use a clean 44 gallon drum, stir it every once in a while and use a 12V portable shower pump Also check out the swedish tent fire (i cant think of what they call it),btw that K stove as ya call it is actually called a rocket stove
Living rural is the way to go. We have lived rural for 18yrs. The last 2yrs we have been even more rural . It's not for everyone , and it's certainly not cheap to start with bare land. Ask us how we know LOL. You have to learn to get out of your comfort-zone. Lot's of skills needed , or lots of money is needed. What I mean is, we started with heavily forested land. It has to be cleared. You have a couple choices. Buy/rent a machine and do it yourself. Or dig into your finances and pay for it to be done. We have a couple thousand hours of labour. Our machine has over 700hrs on it now.
I've been off grid for over a year and have had it much rougher than you do. Constant cold feet in the winter isn't fun! It will get better. And I wouldn't give up the peace and quiet here for anything!
Wow sooo much Birch could use that at our cabin we have none .It is what we use for smoking fish but we have to bring it from our house in Okanagan . looks like you had fun and ate well.
Your whole family is so awesome. Your videos are enjoyed by my whole family. Thank you so much for taking the time to entertain, educate, and inspire so many people. Also, why are you not all scout leaders? You would be perfect.
When y'all were showing the tent, I could actually smell it. Haven't been out in the woods for longer than I like to admit and truly miss it. Grew up in the Pacific Northwest and camped all over the Peninsula and Cascades. Now I'm stuck in Denver and hate it.
I live off grid and the first few months were great, until the rains came. It rained for 2 days and what were just indents in the ground are now lakes 10 ft deep and feet from my tiny house. Of and we have triops, they look like a horse shoe crab but only inches long. And this area Arizona is the only place in the United states.. . But off grid is coming along. Becareful and make sure the water tank is secured. I had one(250 gal,1000lbs) try to fall on me but my people(angels)pushed it away and it landed upside down which shouldn't of happened.
Oh thank god those were only wood chips. I saw something dark in the bottom of the toilet and was mortified. 😂. Hope it all works out well. Wish I could have gone and met you guys.
I own a 100 acre century farm. I'm thinking of putting in a solar so I can get off the electrical grid. We just had a storm that knocked us out for 5 days. Cost a fortune keeping the generator going so we didn't lose all of our meat.
So wish we could have made it. But five wee lambs on the ground and still milking one of the cows. We had the fortune of being able to live in our old "normal" house while building our off grid dwelling. We're in our garage for now with our 5 young kids. This year we're working on the barn/hayshed and hopefully get some work done on the house site. 😊
Loving your shower with two styles of trees for back scratcher. Stay all excited, you are your enough to enjoy another round of camping. My outdoor days are limited to 1.5 acres with trees and plants. Perhaps when I’m older and my spousal unit is gone I will venture one last campsite away from our kids and other people. Cheers guys. Wishing you and your family a blessed week and gentle weather. Peace
First few days? My wife and I lived in a dome tent for 3 months while I built our offgrid home. I grew up tenting while hunting and fishing, for short periods, but I officially hate tents now. 😂
Sure looked fun Jeff. That k stove seems to be quite the rig. Don’t think cooking eggs on it would be a great idea , for me anyway. I’d be cracking a few eggs in a pan and start doing other stuff. Charcoal eggs are not tasty. Glad you all had a great time. Wish I could’ve been there. Maybe someday.
Alanna- thank you for commenting on our Titan Stove. It actually is quite easy to control the heat and cook with typical cookware without burning food. With a little practice you can run it from a simmer to a raging boil merely by adjusting the size and volume of the bio mass you are feeding. More smaller sticks= max heat. Fewer larger sticks=lower heat that requires less feeding. Hope this helps.
Hobbit house and earth berm is such a fabulous idea Jeff for a camp in the woods. I wish there was a remedy for national bird of the Canada, Mosquitos !! enjoyed watching this episode, specially outdoor kitchen setup!
I just bought a Titan and it surpasses all of my expectations compared to the rest of the ones that I looked at online for the same price the quality of this one surpasses all of them we do a lot of camping and a lot of the campsites we go to don't allow us to have an open flame and this is perfect it makes for easy setup clean up once you're done you just pack it up and you're on your way thank-you Minuteman
we are thinking about doing something similar with our new land. We are hoping to get a simple cabin built before we move there, but you guys have given me the confidence to move even if its not up yet
The title had me thinking this was a survival video. Turns out it's a video about living in the woods with $20,000 worth of modern stuff from big box stores.
I learned my lesson watching your earlier videos. Turn the AC down to as cold as you can get it, fire up the BBQ and eat some steaks with roasted potatoes while watching. It feels like you're right there except I really did drool when that poutine showed up even though I was eating steak.
Such a great looking setup! Really wish it would have been feasible for me to come see it in person with my wife and kids! But a gridlessness video is the next best thing! That is so much for sharing your family and friends with us all. It truly means a lot! Dave in Florida
