    As an individual who can pick up technology and get used to using it very easily I've found OS X to be the most difficult and confusing thing to interact with. It's elegant in appearance, sure. It completely lacks elegance in utility however.

      @DonnyJS 9 років тому +12

      You have what I call OS laziness, not saying it to be an ass whole, but you have to configure Mac to operate how you want it to operate. You can't expect it to do everything for you, like Windows.

      I disagree, I mainly use Linux with 7 on the side. I always do registry edits and fiddle with the Android OS on my phone as well. The fact of the matter is that Linux for example is meant to be simple and easy to bend to your will. That's why man people customize it their way. It's a clean canvas. With OS X I find that it's not only inelegant but is also a very messy canvas.

      Same here! Chrome OS, Ubuntu, other random builds of Linux, Windows, all simple. Put me in front of a mac and I can't figure out basic things. Like the copy and paste or running a file from the desktop or virtual PC or whatever it is. But the worst thing is finder. It's awful and incredibly unintuitive.

      ***** I use a MacBook Air solely for study, and its multitasking is just unmatched for me, incredibly fluid and easy to use. I do agree some aspects aren't very intuitive, but this is all subjective.

    About those Finder complaints: (1) Sorting is NOT system wide. For each window you can enter cmd+"j" and choose how you want to sort the items in that particular window, without altering others. (2) I don't know what he means by "internal storage gets all piled together." There is a specific hierarchy, he probably hasn't understood it yet. (3) The force-refresh thing is true, but if it's taking long to refresh you can always close and reopen the window, or even enter cmd+opt+esc and relaunch finder. (4) There are two thumbnail sizes ONLY when you view items as a list. Enter cmd+1 to see them as icons, and you can continuously adjust the item size in that same menu (cmd+"j"). And that is NOT system wide. (5) The thing about cut-paste is true, but what he doesn't seem to understand is that keyboard shortcuts are not a nuisance, they are THE WAY to use a Mac. (6) Up-directory is cmd+uparrow.

    • @NickFrom1228
      @NickFrom1228 8 років тому +9

      Quite true. He should have googled mac keyboard shortcuts. Ironically, windows users used to say Mac users have to use the mouse and windows is more powerful because I can do things more quickly with the keyboard. Now the claim is reversed. Irony at its best.
      Regarding some of your points:
      Point (2) Agreed, though the mac used to be more clear. I'm surprised he didn't click on his machine name in the Devices list and see pretty much the same things as the windows file system.
      Point (3) True. The refresh thing is annoying. But to restart the finder, thats a pretty drastic solution for refreshing.
      Point(5) Apple added this but in an odd way. You copy as normal then instead of Command V you do Command Option V to do the move. Its odd but present.

    I purchased an 11" Macbook air off craigslist to try out the , " Mac Experience," and I was super impressed! I then sold it to purchase a Macbook 15" Retina and man I cannot be more happy...I'll never go back to windows for productivity. I do have a gaming rig that I run Windows 8.1 on, but even then I'm considering loading linux on it now that they have STEAM. So much has changed in the last 7 years of Mac, I’d say at least half of Linus’s complaints have been completely resolved (or had simple solutions at the time that he wasn’t aware of). Especially with Finder.

    • @MicahIsBatman2
      @MicahIsBatman2 10 місяців тому

      Still though, Finder sucks in comparison to File Explorer. Finder works for basic stuff, but the convenience in Windows of being able to type exact directories, or having default Music, Video, and Picture folders is way better than finder. Gallery also being in File Explorer is way more convenient than going to a separate app to view all of your pictures. Also IMO, File Explorer looks way better.

    • @thebuddercweeper
      @thebuddercweeper 10 місяців тому

      @@MicahIsBatman2 I much prefer Finder. You can do all of that stuff and much more.
      1. You can go to an exact directory using the "go to folder" option, or shift+cmd+G.
      2. Finder has default music, video and picture folders.
      3. You can look through your photos in finder easily enough using several different options, none of which are exactly the same as on Windows, but is more flexible.
      4. appearance is an odd thing to bring up when it comes to a file manager, but I personally prefer the minimalism of Finder over all the clutter in the side and top bar of Windows Explorer. I will say that Windows 11 makes it (and everything) look a *lot* better than it used to though.

      I think a " When i switched to Linux " Fedora would have to get Red Hat's approval and/or try for a Red Hat sponsership as it would be cool be Red Hat is picky about what they do and do not allow into their enviroment. So if Linus could attract them then that would be like super awesome ... i doubt he would get a free copy of Red Hat Linux but of Fedora Gnome 3 for it that would be cool.
      If he actually does do a Linux thing i think it will be more of Ubuntu though um probably the Lubuntu or Xubuntu versions not straight out Ubuntu as Ubuntu is very clunky and bloated while Lubuntu and Xubuntu are not as much bloated. To that Lunbuntu and Xubuntu are fairly easy to pick up and use with a almost entirely GUI based interface with only a few exceptions that the avg user wont use like setting a static IP address and setting up a server and stuff like that are almost entirely in terminal but the avg user part like firefox and LibreOffice is preinstalled and ready to go out of the box um fresh install as Cronical does not have a box for their distros.

    What I do love about OS X is how all installed programs are installed within one folder called Applications. No not shortcuts, the programs them selfs without the need to go into Program Files and look for the install directory to find a specific .exe I'm looking for. Without having to make a folder filled with shortcuts, scrolling through "all apps" on the start menu or filling up the desktop with shortcuts.
    Haven't had a Mac in a while, but they do have their handy features as well. Stuff that are annoyances on Windows might not be on Mac and viseversa basically.

    iMacs are meant to be used with Apple keyboards. For example, with an apple keyboard, f3 is used to access Mission Control. It is the same thing with brightness, it's on the Mac keyboard. I don't think you can configure a keyboard other than Apple's own to do things like that on Macs, I've tried with my G710+ on my Macbook. I had no luck. This just goes to show how Apple is stubborn with third party compatibility. I love many of Apple's products, but things like this make me not like post-Wozniak Apple as a company.

    Dude, I'm a Mac user - I use it quite a bit and bought my first one in 2009. The transition and change was an Epic mind-job and I couldn't agree more with EVERYTHING you've mentioned in this video. Found myself laughing out loud at the little annoyances I went through. Great job on pointing them out. The prices are high, some things aren't very intuitive and for a power user, it's even more annoying. I could share a list of other annoying things you've missed - but I might take up too much space in this comment. However, I'm the kind of techie that fully invests in the competition and I fell in love with just a few things that came from the iOS world that I can't have on Windows and for that reason, I've been following their incremental updates over the years and given them a chance. From being a die hard (and Certified) support specialist and expert on Windows - I'm still finding it weird that I'm still using a Mac at home (and taking it to work). Stranger things have happened. By the way, 1 month isn't enough to migrate. After 7 years, I only learnt about how to do a few more common Windows tasks this year. I also advise all my friends and colleagues who naturally want to copy what I'm doing to please be mindful that the shift and switch can be a painful one if unprepared. Strangely enough, many of them still did and they've stuck with it - can't explain it...

    Being a Mac person, I can understand your frustrations with certain features. However, most of this is just not using the system to your liking. There are many options for helping your workflow in Finder that you may not have explored. I will not argue that the user experience is different, but Windows people make it seem difficult. Shortcut keys are your life in many applications, and Mac OS X is no different. Learn them and use both of your hands you uni-plegics. The mouse isn't for everyone, but I for one love the scroll action and the ability to use gestures to improve workflow. I'm not sure why you had issues with scroll speed, as it only moves as fast as you do and does allow flicks to scroll quickly like a cellphone.
    The Mac is not for everyone, but I feel they have done more right and have better features than a Windows OS experience. However, it's all subjective and to each their own.

    While I do understand the sentiment that Macs are overpriced for their performance, people don't seem to understand that Macs aren't designed for hardcore gamers (which is what this youtube channel is mostly targeting). The Mac is designed as a workstation desktop for graphics/web designers and other artists. OSX is an experience you have to try for yourself to understand.
    The "gaming PCs are cheaper" argument is like saying "why own a sports car when I can ride a train?" Sure the train can get you from point A to point B more cheaply, but you don't buy a sports car to get there for less money. You buy a sports car for the experience of owning a sports car!

      (Don't take this as a personal attack I have just gotten a bit angry with seeing this.)
      I really hate people who use this as an "This is why you buy mac"
      I'm a graphic designer. I also do art for a bit of spare money on various sites.
      Mac is no different than windows. AT ALL, hell I find Windows a whole lot easier. And saying it's for lifestyle is an even worse statement. you are the people that brainwash artists into spending assloads of money on crappy hardware and dumb software.
      All my artists friends except a select few use mac.
      And every day I hear about how it's broke and they have to buy a whole new one or where they have to send it for repairs, or some other crap. I build computers for people and when they tell me this.. I literally try to convince them they should buy a PC and if they must I can install MacOS on it. Yeah, it's a sports car, one that you have to buy a new one every 5 months.
      It's god, damn ridicules.
      I actually did get one of my artist friends to move to PC AND THEY FUCKING LOVE IT.
      and it hasn't broke in the last 3 years they have had it. And even if it did I would fix it for FREE, because with PC's it's EASY, and CHEAPER if needing replacements.
      So no. Macs are for people that want to look "Edgy" like a guy that buys a huge truck to compensate for his small offerings.
      But hey, I'm not knocking you for liking it. just stop lieing to others.
      Give them a chance to experience both and let them decide.

      buying that particular imac for graphic design would make more sense if it had a touch screen and came with an arm so that you could move it all around to draw on.
      Otherwise what good is the optimized software if you could get better overall hardware.

    • @LimitedWard
      @LimitedWard 9 років тому +24

      Kaede Ishimora I'm not sure how your friends are treating their Macs that they are breaking down so often. I've had my Macbook Pro since 2009, and although it has gotten slower (as would any 6-year-old computer) it has never broken on me. My mother also owns a Mac (an older model of the one in this video), which she's had for about the same amount of time.
      Last year I decided to build my own gaming PC, and let me tell you, I never had so many computer problems in my entire life. In the past year, I've had at least a dozen crashes (which I just recently discovered was due to an out-of-date BIOS). In other words, my PC experience has been far more choppy than my Mac experience.
      In terms of ease of use, I think it's all a combination of preference and what you are used to. I grew up using both systems, and I've become adept at using both OSs, but the majority of my family definitely prefers OSX (the exception being my father who has exclusively used Windows).

      That's the same price as the complete iMac:

      So if you buy this mac and run Windows on it, you basically got a computer for free compared to the Dell monitor. Look I would never buy it myself, but the price of this thing ain't too shabby for what they're offering.

    Mac was never meant to be like windows, and it can be a frustrating experience when you expect things to be the same. When I first switched, I simply took the time to get used to making it work and exploring the settings. This lead to me discovering new apps and abilities that windows users can only dream of having. For example, BetterTouchTool is a custom multi-touch thing for the trackpad. You can close apps, open stuff, change the volume, anything at all with it. Then there's Butler which does the same for Hotkeys (I personally don't use it). Mac can even natively create hotkeys for apps that have a specific function (such as "Merge Windows"). Focus writer which is a translucent text/typing app that can use your own backgrounds (my favorite for school). Sure mac has its weird bugs/quirks, but there will always be a solution.
    Windows was always a stressful experience for me and practically everyone in our family. Be it drivers, viruses, incompatible hardware, and just the amount of troubleshooting we put into things. I'm still a fan of windows, but mac will always be my favorite over the other brands out there. :)

      Jens Thestrup Toft don't know why you think it's idiotic. Close means close. Not hide in the background. Also, maximise means open a whole new virtual desktop in Apple land, instead of actually maximise. I completely understand why Apple does this though, to the average user, once they have open the app once, the second time round, when they go to 'open' it again, it'll seem super fast.

    • @JensThestrupToft
      @JensThestrupToft 7 років тому +21

      ***** I think it's idiotic because it's based on a lack of understanding of how macOS functions. The red button promises to close, which it does - just not the application. It's supposed to close the window, not the application.
      Similarly with the green button, which isn't supposed to "maximise" (a Windows term which isn't used in macOS). It's supposed to start the application in full screen (what you call a new virtual desktop). If you hold down Alt while clicking the green button, it will instead resize the window to fit the content it is displaying.
      The Mac operating system has never had a maximise button in the sense that Windows does because there's no point to it.

    At it's peak there were 4 people looking confused at a MacBook fiddling around with it in order to copy the goddamn Media from the SD-Card onto the HDD but after like half an hour I somehow managed to get the shit done.
    I was seriously like: "I build my own PC's complete with acrylic tubing sporting water cooling loops, sleeved custom wiring done by myself, High-End pump and fan controllers, etc... and It took me like 30min to copy/paste a bunch of files from a SD-Card to a PC?!! W-T-F?!"
    Apple makes beautiful Hardware no doubt but certain Software related decisions... Whoa.

    F14 and F15 are on full mac wired keyboard (still flat aluminum) above the "home" and "page up" buttons, between the number back and qwerty keyboard. F16, F17, F18, and F19 buttons are above number pad keys. I see this video featured the smaller wireless one which explains why it was missing for you.
    Also, the "parent directory" feature in Finder windows is available by command-click the title of a finder window, you'll see full path pop down there.

    Should try Ubuntu. It's a bit like a combination between OS X and Windows, and from my experience, is one of the better Linux distros out of the box.
    Of course, with it being a Linux distro you can turn it into anything you want fairly easily regardless.
    And adding hotkeys is extremely easy; you can bind them to literally whatever you want (including your own bash scripts). I have mine setup so that I can turn the volume up and down by doing Ctrl + up arrow or + down arrow, which is really nice cuz my keyboard has no built in media controls and I prefer no media controls anyways (other than those that I setup myself through hotkeys). I've tried to do the same in Windows but haven't been able too (I'm sure it's possible, but I have no clue how).
    Plus you can throw Ubuntu on basically any machine that exists. Although from time to time there will be driver issues, but overall everything tends to work fairly easily.

The default key shortcut for it is CTRL + up arrow, but if you go to settings, mission control you can select whatever key you want from a list, or set a hot corner for it. It is really useful for working with multiple windows in the same app.

    4:02 - THAT PISSED ME OFF SO MUCH WHEN I WAS USING A MAC AT WORK!! You go to the menu to try and learn a shortcut command for, say, Force Quit. And it says "sideways clover leaf symbol, circle with arrow sticking out of it, weird lines that make no sense". That's great. ONLY ONE OF THOSE GRAPHICS APPEARS ON THE APPLE KEYBOARD!! So after you go "Okay, Command and... what?!", you have to go Google it to figure out that it's supposed to be "Command, Alt/Option, Escape". God dammit Apple, either put those graphics on the keys they represent like you did with Command, or just use words! Your operating system should not have cunting hieroglyphics in it!!
    And at least for me, I needed to Command Option Escape way more on Mac to close unresponsive applications than I've ever needed to CTRL ALT DEL/CTRL SHIFT ESC to get to Task Manager on Windows, and I used Mac for 2 years VS probably 20-25 on Windows? So why Apple hides the shortcut keys behind symbols they don't define just completely baffles me! And people call Mac OS the more easy to use, easy to understand OS for computer illiterate people! THE FUCK, MAN?!
    Also it wasn't until recently that you could rename a file or folder in the right click menu on Mac. WTF were they thinking not having that for so long?!
    *AND WHY DOESN'T THE CLOSE PROGRAM X BUTTON CLOSE THE GODDAMN PROGRAM LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO?!*
    But to be fair, I will give credit to Mac for having "print to PDF" baked right in. Before Windows 10, you needed a third party program for that on Windows.

  • @veekali

    I made the switch many years ago, and some of those learning curves are what really kept me from enjoying a mac because I was constantly jumping in boot camp and using windows because it's so familiar, however like you said in part 2 and 3 it's the OS that many people are buying into, not the hardware. It seems you enjoyed part of the experience Linus with the OS and it's "core" apps but chose not to mention how security like sandboxing, unix architecture and etc are the reasons people don't realize ultimately but are the main drivers for people choosing to move.
    They're also buying to ease of use and repair when engaging for support and repair through Apple phone support and the Retail Stores, for people that are novice or ignorant of trying to do it on their own as least. Most people that own any form of technology typically need to buy a service warranty separate from the company that produce it to service it and/or mail it off to a repair center and see it back in 2-4 weeks. I hope you do a part 4 or 5 focused on these which ultimately are the reason you and many other choose to buy a Mac or other Apple tech.
    Linus I enjoy all your other videos tremendously, however this video "Part" series was a bit underwhelming and didn't really sink in to the reason you chose to start featuring macs into these videos. I'm currently looking at switching from Synology NAS to a unRAID system and your tutorial has been the most clear-cut of the setup process. Thank you Linus.

    • @Roseheartt
      @Roseheartt 8 років тому +29

      +PowerHouse_ PR I got through your first sentence and I already knew you were wrong. Why? Because many of his complaints _were_ legitimate. For example; not having a "Cut" command (or "Move" command in Mac's Finder) in the right-click menu. That's legitimate, especially for someone coming from Windows. I can Cut (Move) files or entire folders without ever even touching my keyboard in a grand total of *_five clicks_*: Right-click the item, left-click cut, click target window, right-click, left-click to paste. Yes, you _can_ use keyboard shortcuts in Mac, but you can also use them in Windows. That's not the point. Or the complaint about having icon sizes being _system wide_ in Finder. That's a legitimate complaint coming from a Window's user, where you can change the icon sizes for _each and every folder_, so your documents folder can have small icons to quickly scroll through and find what you want or large icons for folders with pictures so you can easily thumb through your pictures for the one you want.
      That alone is just two of many of the complaints he had that were legitimate, but I get the distinct impression you're going to flagrantly dismiss my arguments just like you did with Linus'. Don't forget that this review was very much so _opinion-based_ and you *_cannot_* tell someone that their opinion is wrong just because it differs from _your_ opinion. Honestly, you shouldn't have to change for your OS. Your OS should adapt to _you_. You shouldn't have to rely on proprietary peripherals to get full function out of your computer.

    • @andrescadenzagarzav844

    Dude. Many of your ctiticisms are just bevause there are things you dont know yet. Of course you wont know everything about a new OS to make you feel comfy with it in just a month or two.
    Example - your criticism of finder - totally unfounded - you can enable the right click menu and use copy and paste just like in windows. Also you can enable the path bar that will show you exactly where you are in finder. You can search your files in finder and can choose to search just the folder you are in or the entire mac.
    The list goes on and on. Please do some more research and remake your video as i think you made it prematurely.
    Even some of your keyboard shortcut ctitcisms are not valid. Look at the top keys and icons on the top of your genuine apple keyboards and you will find the answers to your crits
    The first month or two switching from one system to another is always a challenge and seemingly half of your criticisms are purely because of that.

    One thing that annoys me about Mac is not being able to install apps from the App Store to a different drive. Unlike windows they have to go on my operating system drive which in my case is a small ssd. For Logic Pro the 50gb of extra content HAS TO be installed on the ssd in the application support folder which completely fills up the ssd.

      Drag them to what ever drive you want after they're done downloading. It's silly you can't choose where they download though. Although even Steam only recently started allowing that as well.

    In order to CUT in OS X, just use Cmd+C (Yes, it's a copy command), and Cmd+Opt/Alt+V to paste it. No need for third party app.

    • @LeoAriWibowo
      @LeoAriWibowo 8 років тому +2

      Maybe because we are so used to Windows/Linux way to cut and paste, we find the OS X way,... a little difficult. Understandable, because they have different thinking.
      In Windows/Linux, we have to decide to copy/cut files or folders FIRST, before we can copy/move them to other location.
      Whereas in OS X, just copy the files or folders and decide to copy/move them LATER in other location.
      Each has their own advantages, I guess. But personally, I like the OS X way.

    - to go to the up folder just do [CMD+up arrow]
    - you can also add a "path" icon to the tool bar of any finder window, just personalize it (right click on the tools bar)

    The majority of the points you made were fair. The inability to cut/paste inside Finder still annoys the living out of me to this day, and using scroll wheels are absolutely hideous. But I think you really didn't spend enough time exploring the little nooks and crannies of OS X. Pretty much every complaint you made about Finder is fixable various different settings (thumbnail view, system wide/folder specific sorting), and image exporting is much easier (drag n drop) inside the more basic Image Capture than the horrendously bad iPhoto app, and Apple have promised a 'best of both worlds' photo application coming soon that blends the best of Image Capture, iPhoto and Aperture in to one application. Like Windows, you can't expect it do everything for you out of the box.

    im a mac user and have been for several years and this is my personal, number one argument. windows os design hasn't changed much since the early 2000's. apples os looks beautiful. it makes the whole user experience better. with a clear rounded applications dock, simple squares and circles for icons that have just the right amount of color and even shading to keep it from being too simple, beautiful but simple animations for opening and closing applications, and short sounds to match users actions such as throwing something away and emptying your trash, though you can turn this off. but windows is really annoying. the last time i owned a windows based pc was in 2005 and every time i go to best buy and try out new ones there's really no difference. there's a million sub menus, icons are extremely dated and what is new is just hard to look at. it just vomits squares and bright, obnoxious colors like it was designed in ms paint by a 7yr old. the last time i really used a pc i used it for nearly 20 minutes and could barely navigate from the start menu to that windows 5 looking menu, or is it like an os inside of an os? i still don't understand what they were thinking when they designed that
    yes macs aren't really customizable hardware wise or can be pushed as far as some factory made pc's, but they aren't meant to be. macs are just luxury computers. up until the early 90's they were meant for graphic design and editing but thats mostly changed and i hate that apple for the past couple years has been advertising them as work computers. non macs have the advantage as far as customizability goes, but apple really was doing great until around 2012 with keeping things simple for the everyday person to watch videos, study and interact with others online

      Before I was a "PC masterrace/Mac is overpriced peace of shit" kind a guy. I built 4 custom PC all from scratch and I used to custom compile Windows version(to make a lightweight Windows for gaming), so I was kind of a hardcore PC user. I had an iPhone 4 for a while, which I really loved. Then I finally got a Macbook Pro because I was in USA and planned to sell it when I came back home. But I ended up keeping it. First I ran Windows on Bootcamp because I just loved Windows and at the time I thought MacOS was confusing to use. When Windows 8 came out I switched to Mac because I thought it was horrible the way Microsoft was heading. Now I love MacOS and I can never switch back. There was a while when my macbook got ruined because I had the graphics fault, which Apple had made a replacement program for. For a few months I ran Windows on my laptop and stationary. I then switched back to Mac when i got the Macbook running again and now I'm 10x more productive than before(again). It's just an operating system to love. You don't have to worry about temperatures, adjusting BIOS settings, worry about Windows crashing and loosing everything, and the apps for Mac is soo incredibly more innovative than on Windows. Windows apps are barely changing and most apps are just as basic as they were in Windows XP. With a button on the menu bar im suddenly extending my desktop to my TV, with a button on the menu bar im suddenly streaming all my audio/music to my speakers, one button and im sharing internet connection with my iphone, all built in MacOS functions. There are several apps for all social apps like whatsapp, facebook messenger and so much more(I have them running on the menu bar, just a click away). The apps are infinitely better on Mac.

      faissialoo DirectX would have to be rewritten to support it, but it would help to get DirectX based games to other OSes. Since Linux is an Open Source clone of Unix, it wouldn't take much effort to make DirectX compatible with it. Then SteamOS and other Linux distros could play most PC games. Although I doubt Microsoft would give up their advantage in the gaming industry.
      Since Linux is closely related to Unix, all you have to do is find a Linux distro that resembles Windows in UI and functionality. Zorin is a Linux distro that imitates Windows quite well. But if you want more customizability, go with a KDE based distro. Fedora and Kubuntu both come with KDE. KDE actually had multiple desktops since version 1.0 back in 1998. KDE is similar enough to Windows that the UI change won't be as jarring as other desktop environments, aside from Zorin, if you are really used to Windows.
      If you want to use an OS that's Unix based instead of Linux based, you can use FreeBSD with KDE. FreeBSD and BSD are Unix based. BSD is what OS X is based off of.

    so here is my thoughts: I study computer science, I use windows 8.1 Lenovo y500 laptop and here is the deal : when coding in c / c++ windows makes me want to rip my hair out, the memory management and debugging is just terrible, so when I code c / c++ I work in virtual linux, I cannot just use linux because it is missing the programs I daily use. What I miss the most in windows is sensible commandline shell (preferably bash ofc). Windows .bat files are a fucking joke, they are terrible for any slightly more complex scripts. Friend bought MBP and he let me use it for a bit and the only thing I can say about it is that everything coding related on it just straight up works well. Combined with the battery life and size/weight it is amazing for IT student. But because of all the priprietary stuff and apple being apple and anything they do is non hackable I do not want to switch ... I see why people would though.
