I hope it got you excited enough to start a nice old 17 part sword series. Been dying for some great forging and fine detail work.
Monday.

Great to see Alec getting back in the forge and doing some hammer and anvil work. Missed it :)
Me too. I do enjoy whatever is going on on the channel, but I am mainly here for the heatin' and beatin' of metal.
Yeeees, the reaction video's and dissing his old video's (that were super popular for a reason) made the channel less and less interesting (to me).
I concur. Like the good o'l days.
he has whole shop full of forge stuff and does mostly machining these days :(
@@unlink1649 I don't mind the recreation videos but some feel like they are lower effort than his older videos. I would like to see the recreation videos continue but possibly in old swords or other weapons.
Seeing Alec forging again made me smile! I really miss the in-depth forging projects. I’m sure he has his reason for stepping back but I got a lot of inspiration from those videos.
Welcome back, actual forging and slightly crazy Alec! We missed you.
Tru ‘dat
So true.. this the good stuff!
Refuse to watch the shitty reaction videos
@@nielscremer599 Tell us how you really feel. :)
@@codemonkey2k5 lol
Alec Steele is one of the only people on UA-cam that I’ve actually watched every single video from beginning to end. Probably never going to be a blacksmith myself, but if I ever do, I’m confident to start bc I’ve learned so much from his videos.
Bro, don’t say that, take a class or two. You will never regret it. We even use Alec Steele as an example in our class all the time.
I'd love to see a sort of 'urban blacksmithing' where alec walks around the city, looking for some scrap metal to forge. Uses a rock as an anvil
Amazing idea!
I recently started to learn blacksmithing, and I pick up every scrap of metal that I find. Not sure how much of it I’ll actually be able to use, but that’s logical me’s problem, not ‘oo shiny’ me’s problem.
Really good idea to make movie "props", don't know if you'll do more like this but enjoyed this video!
Also bummer that you're not selling anvils any more(guess that's what being quite a perfectionist sucks for)
Also just kind of a downside to expecting quality now days, the foundry was likely use to being able to pump out items with a fairly large quality range so long as there weren't large defects. Alex was likely expecting a bit more than they wanted to put effort into
I'm so glad you listened to the viewers in one of the previous videos and chose to make some forging montages. Those were always what brought me coming back to your videos, even if I've seen you do it a thousand times. Great video!
Just a minor critique, and I know you was going for show accuracy here, but wouldn't the hole for the pour of the material be better off being a little bit higher just to try and avoid premature spillage from the hole?
@@Braveskin you have a good point, I didn't think of that.
I was goingbto say the same thing
@@Braveskin it doesnt have to be low for not leaving metal in it... the bottom just has to slope up to the hole gently so that at the angle you can comfortably raise it to the slant is almost horizontal and just slightly pointing down. |______/
that's what she said
@@TheScarvig Yeah, you just basically invented a beak, which would be perfect for that.
I do hope you continue to go back to videos like this. These are very reminiscent to your original videos which are what made me start watching you in the first place. I love your work and you’re a talented Smith. Keep doing what you do and know that you are much loved by your video community.
Longer episodes and a ‘mega’ old school Alec project please 🙏🏼
These over produced bite size uploads are ok but what made you unmissable to me was those projects - the attention to detail and passion just mesmerising.
25 episodes of fiddling with gold inlay on a viking sword was a bit much ngl.
@@Isnogood12 it was joyful
@@Isnogood12 I loved it
Was really hoping for a 28 part series on Alec making the 3 rings using this ladle and creating the spinny thing but I guess not
Glad to see some forging, and the enthusiasm from you Alex. Hope to see more of this. And some longer series would be nice.
Alic,
You need to look for modern foundries that can reliably cast anvils to your standards. Look at companies that make engine blocks. They have to constantly cast large steel parts that have fairly tight tolerances.
He visited East Coast Castings a few months ago and looked at blocks they were casting but as the main market is America I suppose they'd have to be made there.
@@ThePillenwerfer He does have a US presence.
This is precisely what I love so much about blacksmithing. You see something and want it. You make it the next day
Love this channel. Been subscribed since the first shop in England but for the last year I’ve gone from watching every video the moment it came out to only watching select videos which show a majority of forging. I’m glad his business and channel are progressing but big projects like knives, swords and tool creation is why I subscribed. I like vids like this one
Love these types of videos more than some you've been doing lately. I've always been surprised given you are sponsored by RAID, you don't just pick a different weapon from there every month and spend the rest of the month building it. All sorts of fantasy weapons, some of them more reasonable then others.
The less this channel has to do with RAID the better.
I missed you forging outside your "skill level". I know you are an exceptional smith. But videos where you forge outside your comfort zone, and go crazy, screw it uo, reforge the same piece multiple times are my favorite videos. It makes me feel better when i screw up forging. Know that even someone as good as you, still screws up, still wonders "if i can". You're amazing and thank you for always uploading content. Its always a better day when i see a new steele video
That was nifty... the only change I would do is make the loop a little bigger so when you pick it up it hangs down lower causing the molten material to stay in easier.
Great video! Maybe make the hole for pouring a little higher?
Haven't watched in awhile but this is what I came for, hybrid techniques using both the forge and the welder for what they're best at
Oh good... I was worried you'd forgotten how to forge stuff :) More forging please!
I nver knew i was into forging and black smithing until I watched your two Rings of Power videos and couldn't stop commenting on how cool everything was.
I really appreciate that Alec is making for lack of a better word stuff I enjoy watching knives and swords be made but blacksmithing is about much more than that
Great to see you forge something from steel 😎
So good to see you forgeing again now all we need is a 10 part weapon build
LOVED THIS!!! So good to see you forging again!!
As a hot tip (pardon the pun) a bunch of Lord of the Rings fans are obsessed with Grond right now. They’re posting so many memes on Reddit. Lol. It makes no sense. BUT It’s supposed to be an ancient battle axe. Could be an awesome build.
How did the "Hammer of the Underworld" turn into an axe lol
Grind is actually a huge iron battering ram made to look like a wolf. Would still be amazing to see on this channel!
@@jaydendarrington7192 GROND
Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, is a malevolent battering ram remade from Morgoth's own battle hammer.
To be honest, I’ve got a mind to establish a foundry. Specifically to make products like your anvils. Because I’m a a bit of a perfectionist myself, and it not like an anvil can’t be recycled back through the process.
I will also always love the fact that as a blacksmith you can just alter your metal tools to suit your tastes in the middle of a project 😂
Can't wait to watch the series. I've never seen anyone cast a pixellated before!
Yes indeed! Love seeing you get excited about forging. It's the reason you are where you are. Now I have to get out in the forge myself. Thank-you for the inspiration! 🤙
We made pin drivers using 1 1/8th winch cable. The pin driver was 1 1/2 or better solid shaft. Without the cable to dampen the sledgehammer blows your hands took some damage. We would weld the cable ends into a close fitting pipe. One end welded to the driving pin and the other end was longer for a handle. Hockey tape helped with the grip.
I really like this concept of not only critiquing 'Hollywood' forging and metalworking, but actually making and testing the stuff/showing how it should properly be done. Sort of a 'Metalworking Mythbusters' thing.
Finally having fun in the shop again! I could feel the joy ... loved it!
Reminds me of the old school one day builds at Barker street! great stuff
I was kinda missing this type of projects, the whole pounding hot metal with a hammer thing
The old video format is back :D I'm so happy
That laugh when he dropped the bar was psychotic. Green Goblin moment :DD
this video is the best i've seen of rings of power so far
So Precious to see you forging again. Down to the one Anvil to rule them all.
1:08 I love to see technology used to upgrade old trades like this. That hammer is just incredibly helpful here while not removin any of the actual craftsmanship that goes into smithing.
What i rly love about things like this is that they make the craft that much more accessible to more ppl. A grt example of this from history is how the person who popularised stuffed animals produced and sold on a large scale was only able to do such bcuz of the innovation of a sewing machine allowing her to work at the craft of sewin despite very limited use of one of her hands.
Her expertise and her insight and her forethought wudve been wasted had she been born many decades prior as she wudnt have been alive for the advent of the sewing machine to do this. That is what i think makes tech like this so amazing to me; it enables and accomodates disabled folk to be able to do things that they just physically wudnt have been able to do in another time.
Man! After watching that episode of LOTR I was also amazed at the thought of the pouring ladle! Im so glad someone made it and tried it! Deserves my sub for sure!
I love this so hard. Proper doing a thing that you thought was presented incorrectly to verify it. Nice.
Just seeing your joy when you were forging made my day. Keep it up Alec!
Great to see you forging again Alec. Nothing better then seeing you hammer hot metal.
Love watching you at the anvil! Also felt very proud as a fledgling blacksmith that I had the same solution in mind for reaching the inside prong to draw it out.
So great to see Alec forging again and being slightly crazy.
The joy on your face to be actually pounding on hot metal again is amazing.
My video somehow got stuck at 1.25x speed (while saying it was at normal speed) so I was watching this like _jesus_ Alec is high energy today! The music too, this is anxiety inducing! lol
I really cant believe you forged that handle from a bar. absolutely superior,
3:28 so THAT'S why I see that twist on so many tools!!
He’s got some wild job security. So many complex manufacturing skills.
Oh wow you actually did it, of all the things I made for the show I wasn't expecting that ladle to be worth so much thought
This video respected Tolkien's work more than any scene in Rings of Power.
I have missed seeing you actually forge hot steel
Fun facts - the intro to the series, the whole molten metal running through carved grooves in wood, that's not CGI. They just got real close with a camera and poured molten metal onto wood. (Though they used a proper crucible, not the world's hottest gravy boat.)
I love how you bleep out the spoiler in this episode but actually showed it in the previous one
I loved how much you enjoyed this. I was laughing and screaming with you all the way!
Buddy is having a great time, love to see the energy
“They melted down $#*+ and casted it into $#*+!” Lol
What's interesting about that forging scene is how the molten metal spins before being poured into the ingot molds. While all those processes are actually used, even magical elves wouldnt have used centrifugal casting just to make ingots from molds just so that they cam be re-cast into the ring molds
It’s fascinating to me that you think of volume of metal needed and how to make it flow to the shape needed instead of how to remove the unneeded metal or add metal to create the necessary features.
I sometimes forget how incredibly fast you are with that power hammer. I thought it was sped up until you were talking while striking.
xD tanks for showing the one flaw of the design that can however be easily adjusted to just having a raised funnel instead of it being so low. Anyway it looks really neat ^^
AH, FORGING!! please do more, your charisma during forging is second to none my friend.
It was great to see you hammering some hot steel again! Loved this show so this really tickled my fancy!
"We want only high quality stuff"...."Sorry pal, we only make crap here, hit the road!"
I love how your power hammer throws off scale just like in Hollywood movies, LOL
Loved the forging along with the fabricating. 👌
I started watching this channel years ago for the bladesmithery. Here I am, years later, watching Alec forge a LADLE from a fantasy show. Don't get me wrong I love the artistry, cinematography, and skill of this channel.. but you know.. I just miss the weapons I guess.
You should get together with The Longest Johns. Hammer and the Anvil song is great. They're out of Bristol.
So very good to see you forge again!!
Very cool. Great to see you forging again!
Don't get me wrong, the fabrication projects are cool, but I just love seeing metal move.
Great to see you forging again Alec.
“Still got it baby!” …. Immediately looses it 😂
Forging that handle was a surprisingly complex process. It really put your blacksmithing skills on display. Super cool.
I don’t imagine I’m the only person curious to see the ladle produced in a more period accurate manner. You could even improve upon its design to avoid retreading old ground. 😊
Edit: Crucible, not ladle. Sorry
Sorry to hear about the anvils- the crucible/ladle is looking good, though.
that looked awesome and i thought of an improvement. If you move the hole higher in the spout and add a riser towards the pour spout it should keep more of the material in he boat until its poured.
Can’t wait to have a larger piece of property so I can finally build a forge and workshop. I will definitely be getting some tools from ya for starting out when that time finally comes
Loved seeing Alec forge again!!
2:40 Probably so exhilarating because you just almost seared a hole through your leg 😬
All jokes aside, it's good to see you get back to the forge and do some good smithing. I love the more mechanical focused videos that you've done recently, but your best shows are still the ones where the steel is hot and the hammer is pounding!
Oops, I spoke too soon, it seems that some of this is machined too 😂 I don't mind. I was curious how you were planning to forge a pan shape 🧐
It's a darn good thing I've picked up two Peter Wright anvils, and an American anvil. I can wait for another production rum of your design.
I know you probs want a foundry in the US but if that's not a deal breaker then maybe the foundry East coast casting you did the video with a while back, they did the casting for the Ranalah english wheels for Dominic Chinea and he's as much of a perfectionist as you are and he's really happy with them, plus you'd be supporting a britsh producer
From an engineering and practicality standpoint, if there was any benefit to that style of ladle over what is normally used, we'd all be using it already.
Hey that flattening of the tool handle was a great Idea. Thanks.
I agree that the entire boat should’ve been heated, not just the bottom. I guess the directors just thought that since only the bottom of the boat was in contact with the coals, that only that part would get hot.
This is the stuff that mad me watch every video in the past
Glad to see you wernt just saying you wanted to make it but actually did.
great video with an interesting idea. a few years ago you asked your community for tools or weapons they would like to see made and with you looking at lord of the rings stuff i would like to throw into the hat celebrimbor's hammer from the shadow of war games its an interesting design and i would love to see how you would tackle some of the forging challenges.
There was no point in making this thing other than just to see what would happen. 🤣🤣🤣 I love it lol
Great to see you forge again. Remake some of your old awards or knifes.
I’ve definitely missed me some old school Alec forging!
Nice to see you doing some work again!
And so it began with the lord of steel forging the rings of power .
All Hail the lord of Steele!!!
Very well done that takes so much skill!
So happy to see you recreate this
I agree with the rest of you. Its great to see him making these sorts of videos again
That was some great pour Alec!!!! Love the end: "Thanks for watching bye bye"
3:38 I didn't realize you had Mario in your shop
hey Alec, as I recall you're in the Midwest. you should look into going to the western Minnesota steam thresher reunion. I know steam threshers isn't anything to do with your channel but it's a completely functional town built by a bunch of hobbyists which includes a forge and a machine shop they run during the show. you may just like it.
