- The video demonstrates four vintage Fender amps played with a clean sounding strat and a beefier telecaster at the end.
Amp 1. Upper right. 1966 Deluxe Reverb with Oxford 12k-5 speaker. 12AU7 reverb driver. Volume 4.2, treble 3, bass 2.5, reverb 2.6.
Amp 2. Upper left. 1976 Deluxe Reverb with newer Jensen P12q speaker. Volume 5, treble 2, bass 3, reverb 3. 12AU7 reverb driver.
Amp 3. Lower left. 1969 Super Reverb with CTS Alnico speakers. A 12AX7 recitifier tube is used. 12AU7 reverb driver. Bright switch off, Volume 4.5, treble 5.2, bass 2.5, reverb 3.
Amp 4. Lower right. 1965 Super Reverb with CTS Ceramic speakers. A 12AX7 recitifier tube is used. 12AU7 reverb driver. Bright switch off, Volume 4, treble 4.5, bass 2.3, reverb 2.7.
A Samsung S7 Edge phone is used for recording :-) Sound quality is not perfect but most importantly is identical microphone setup for all amps.
Strat has Lindy Fralin Real 54 pickups anno 2010, a clean sounding guitar with mellow and scooped tone. Tele has original Baja tele pickups anno 2011.
That Silverface Super Reverb REALLY sounds good!!!

Hi. Had a Silverface Super for 25 years and always wanted to hear an A/B comparison with a Blackface. Mine sounded more like the Blackface you demoed!! It had CTS speakers.

Wow, nice collection of Fender amps. You should make a video with everything set exactly the same so we can hear the actual difference between the amps, you know, one may be thicker, thinner than the other etc, Reverb’s etc.
Ladies and gentlemen, 4 of the most amazing Fender amps ever made. Add a twin in there and you got a dream rig for a lifetime.
The Supers sounded best to me, and the Silverface was my favorite.
Looking at the speakers in each explains it. I am a big fan of CTS speakers, especially the alnico 10s.
Totally agree. I miss mine sooooo much! It started dying on me and I regret it. Bought a re-issue black face and it sucked. Ended up with a Vox AC30 which at least gave me a similar thrill.

I think they are suppose to use a 12at7 for the phase inverter tube actually.

I'd take the Silver Super....so much presence and shimmer, and ive owned a TON of blackface Fenders. The Silvers when tuned properly with the right speakers have great presence and sit in a mix beautifully.
What speakers would you recommend? I’m trying to get my hands on a 73 super reverb
@@Hillelfan02 I had a 74 with original alnico CTS's and they sounded superb. I highly recommend Vintone . Tony or Jay can recone just about anything and it will be killer. Blackface Super, if I were jamming with others it’s the Silverface Super.
BF Deluxe Reverb is much more mid-range present, and "boxier" than the Super Reverbs. BF and SF SR's and DR's should run together, perhaps.The Silver face DR sounds better than the blackface, IMHO.

What accounts for these differenes? Especially the differences between the Deluxe Reverbs... almost seems that the tone stack operates in different areas. Excessive upper mids/lower treble on the silverface deluxe... a thing that I also have difficulties dialing out in some of my amps (which are actually black face amps). the particular bf amps here have much more relaxed eq with less of that harsh upper mid/lower treble... By the way, I own both a handfull bf amps and two sf amps and have tried several others. I have yet to find any systematic reason why some sound 3D, FAT and articulate while others sound strident and 'megaphone' like in the upper register... Yesterday I tried a 1964 or 65 SR for sale locally. Sounded OK but not great. Asked the seller about a beat up sf (non master but with particle board) that was sitting in the corner... Well it was just a sf amp but yeah, it was for sale. Turned out it sounded SO much better than this particular bf. Buth amps original and with the original CTS alnicos. Also my bf SR and my buddys SR sound different. His sounds like on this clip.. my SR has got some of that nasty 'megaphone eq' of the sf DR in this clip.
@@AA1969 I got a silverface DR from 1969 im not totally happy with the tone, well I actually recap the amp and for better but I'm still unsatisfied with the tone, now I'm gonna change the speaker and the rectifier tube for a yellow jacket rectifier.

Just came back and listened again a couple of time.. Love the sound of the silver and back Deluxe and Super... I Between those 2 I love which ever one you're playing.... lol... They both sound just super and would love to hear a band with a rythum on the blackface and lead on the Silveer. Thanks guru... really enjoy your playing. Is that a US or Mexican strat you're playing?

Hey all. I’m trying to decide between a vintage Silverface DR or saving for a vintage BF DR. From this video, it doesn’t seem like the tonal difference justifies an extra 1k$. Thoughts?
Go with the one you enjoy it's tone the most. It's about finding and creating your sound as a guitarist that will make you stand out and will give you the most enjoyment when playing. The equipment or price doesn't matter. Just my opinion.

I tried a couple of blackface Super and when i turned the Treble past 5 both seemed to loose that Blackface magic
I have two, and they get too ice picky above five ...

My amp simulator simply does not sound like this
I think people are finally catching on that silverface amps kick ass because the prices are going up (which kinda sucks, because they were a readily available semi-hidden gem that no one wanted to touch). I think it's probably from younger generations (like me) not growing up being told they're shit and not growing up with bluesy guitar heroes playing blackface stuff. A lot of music I grew up on WAS made with beat up old silverfaces so I think I generally dig that sound more, I like how cold it sounds, people always want "warm," but give me some frigid spiky shit. The blackface stuff sounds kinda dull to me, I'd never dream of blackfacing my '75 Twin.
I love them both and they both have great attributes when tuned up properly with the right tubes, speakers etc..It really has to do more with the musical styles of the times as well as the evolution of the gear industry in general. For instance , there weren't the speaker choices back then which really makes a huge difference. there were very few choices....years ago nobody wanted silvers, because the blackface darker tone was what all the rock and blues cats wanted. The Silvers have an cool shimmery metallic quality cuts through a mix beautifully. I gigged with Silverface deluxe reverb and Princeton reverbs and they cut through the mix like no other amp. I also found that I could use a blackface deluxe and a silver princeton together as they both sat in the eq in different places. Together they kill!!! I also used some cool pedals as preamps to fatten up and round off the tone a bit too.
Now give me a pedal that can simulate this sound.
Super reveb Sf has more bass, black face has more mids
