    My Kimber Classic Royale blue that I bought in 1998 will eat absolutely anything including lead semi-wadcutters. Sadly I would never buy any Kimber made after 2000. If there is a reliable Kimber made after 2000, it's purely by accident, not by design.

    I purchased that exact model to use as my EDC. Have put a couple hundred rounds through it on a couple occasions and have had zero hiccups. I rolled the dice with the mixed reviews Kimber receives. Glad I took the chance. Such a wonderful gun to shoot. Much nicer than the Glock I was carrying. I would say this 1911 is as enjoyable as my PT99AF.

    Own this same 1911. Never had an issue with it chambering rounds ball or hollow points, clean, dirty, dry, or fresh oiled up. only time I’ve had issues with loading is the factory mag. Went dented around where the 2nd round would sit. Caused it to double eject(spent shell& last live round). It’s had 2k rounds through it now and I trust it to save my life. Being a tow truck driver it has a rough life. The slide finish is my only complaint besides the factory mag I got with it.

    I purchased the Kimber micro nine about a year ago. I wanted to use it as my EDC. When I first got it, the magazine kept dropping out. It would regularly misfire and misfeed. Sent it back to Kimber, and they practically redid all the springs, and replaced a few other parts. Got it back to me in less than a week. I was so pleasantly surprised that I wrote Kimber a letter thanking them for the work they did, but this is the way it should’ve come out originally. Summing it up, the gun has been absolutely flawless since I got it back, a little over a year now. I Carry it every day without a hiccup. Regards, Peter from Miami. 😎

    First fired a 1911 for the first time when I was 10. When I came of age, I more than dabbled into Kimber:
    5” Raptor blued, 5” Eclipse Target II, and the Gold Combat II Limited Edition. I ranged with them very often and they were mostly ok with small nitpicks in quality like the checkering looking like it was done on a Monday and the Gold Combat LE having to be sent back for bore being not totally concentric and having dead lamps in the rear night sight (bought new). I sold all the Kimbers after I got into Nighthawk Custom.

    Only issue I've had with steel in any of my .45's (including this pistol) is when i shoot steel first and then go to brass.
    The steel cases don't expand as much as the brass cases, this is a fact in even high pressure cartridges and is even more pronounced in the low pressure 45acp.
    This means you're getting all manner of fouling in your chamber from the steel case. Then, when you move to brass case you have problems.
    Generally speaking, this isn't always the case (I've found anyway) it doesn't seem to matter as much in a "mil-spec" chamber variants.
    But once you start tightening those tolerances, then the problems begin.

    • @TNRay
      @TNRay  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Michael, that’s great info! But this 1911 had already been fired many times, many different types of brass case (and only brass case) ammo before I ever saw it. I honestly only tried the steel because I didn’t want to waste brass case if I was gonna have the same issues my friend did. Turns out, the steel case is the only thing it would run reliably, period.

      Ha. That's pretty cool in a way, i guess if i was gonna have a 45 that was picky on ammo types, better for it eat trash only over just the high end fodder.

    I got my Kimber Custom back in 2000. This was before the Series II (firing pin safety) models that I know of. Mine came with a cheap 7 rd magazine that on occasion would fail but I learned early that after market magazines are the way to go. Wilson Combat magazines (though pricey) have been reliably feeding my Kimber for many years. Chip McCormick mags are another one I hear is good. Not sure why Kimber has this reputation for making good 1911s but has cheap mags.

Fired 400 rounds of brass ball ammo and haven't had a single feed issue or cycling issue. One problem I have had is I was changing grips and grip bushing came out when unscrewing. This is a problem for many other 1911 makers not just kimber, that is why Wilson Combat designed a superior magazine to fix the feeding problem that plagued the 1911 platform. You would think for pride sake these companies would upgrade there mag design. And whether we like it or not there is some truth to a break in period..

As for the break in, yes. I agree a break in is a legitimate thing. Slide to frame tolerances are tighter on most 1911’s than any polymer frame gun. That being said, there’s no reason the pistol shouldn’t still function at 90+ percent during that break in. It’s pretty hard to get through that first 1000 rounds when every other round is a malfunction. Have a great day man

    This is going to sound really weird but for some reason TulAmmo 45acp is actually really good stuff. I think it's because Russia doesn't really have history with the cartridge so when their engineers decided to load it they knew it would be almost exclusively for North American and Western markets. I actually think they stepped up their quality control a little just to compete with other manufacturers so I'm not really surprised that it worked well in the Kimber. I have several guns that do not like Remington UMC 230 grain FMJ round nose but functioned flawlessly with Remington UMC FMJ & JHP in the 185 grain weight and the 230 grain JHP which is really strange and goes against conventional logic but also goes to show you that you got to get out and shoot your gun to figure out what it likes and remember what it doesn't like. This is important in all guns not just 1911's. Some people might point out that Glocks work with almost everything but that's not true just research glocks and their lack of chamber support resulting in blowouts and explosions I will acknowledge that the differences between CIP and SAAMI in several calibers have been a contributing factor.

    • @TNRay
      @TNRay  11 місяців тому

      I’m not sure about the first part, but would be cool if it’s true.
      The rest though, I agree with. Some guns just won’t run certain types of ammo. However, they should run standard ammo. Which the 3 options I tried, including the Tula, are considered standard ammo. 230 gr fmj. If a 1911 is produced that can’t run 9/10 manufacturers loading of the standard loading… somethings is wrong with the gun.

    You need to learn more about how the 1911 operates so here is a lesson- that type of failure to feed can be caused by an extractor that is too tight. You could adjust it yourself on the range in 5 minutes. If it feeds one brand of ammo but not another then it is likely that there is a slight variation in the rim diameters as produced by the different manufacturers. Any 1911 can have this problem, in fact any plastic gun can have this problem too. It's easy to fix.

    • @TNRay
      @TNRay  9 місяців тому

      Funny enough, Bill, I know exactly how a 1911 operates. The problem is, this is a brand new gun out of the box. It shouldn’t have left the factory with an extractor that needs tuned. Don’t rush to the defense of the mighty Kimber, just because you’re a fan of their firearms. Every company makes mistakes and every company puts out products that shouldn’t have made it past QC. Some companies just do it more than others. You need to realize this is a review, not a “how to gunsmith” video. I’m taking the gun, as it is, out of the box from the factory. Sure, it’s not a hard fix. But it’s a fix I shouldn’t have to do on a brand new gun out of the box. Surely any logical person would agree with that, no?

      @@TNRay My opinion too- on a Kimber or S&W I don't think you should have to make your own adjustments. On a Springfield or Ruger maybe. On a Colt or Girsan or other 1911 that costs less than a Springfield, I think you should expect to have to make adjustments. I've seen Glocks that wouldn't run right out of the box so I think you have to consider the price level of the gun, and Kimber is at the price level that it should work out of the box.
      It would be interesting to take the steel case ammo that functioned and the brass cased ammo that was problematic and see if there is a measurable difference in the diameter, thickness or shape of the rims. That could pinpoint if it is an extractor issue.

    Maybe I’m just blessed with my Kimber as it hasn’t given me any problems really yet and I have shot brass cased ball and hallow points in it in 230 grain and 185 grain.I think the problem is Kimber moving there manufacturing to Alabama and a new group of people having a learning curve there and the tolerances for the chambers are too tight.My kimber is a basic custom 2 gun with ambidextrous safety and Kimber walnut grips made in Yonkers New York.So far 450 rounds through it and only one failure to chamber completely and I think it was due to reloaded ammunition with rough cases.I own Springfield and colt guns too and if it didn’t preform I would get rid of it trust me.I’m a tool and die man and gunsmith also.

    All the 1911's I've bought in the last few years seem to have tight chambers. Just run a finish reamer through the chamber, then mirror polish chamber and feed ramp. Problem solved. So the issue I have with this, Jack, is the fact I should not have to do work on a gun out of the box just to make it run reliable. That’s the manufacturer’s job.
      And as far as competition, it all depends on personal preference. I know plenty of guys (and I shoot competitively) that prefer not to have steel frame guns because the extra weight is harder to stop on transitions. Sure it helps absorb recoil but there’s some downsides when you’re running the gun fast.

One gives you more capacity and a bit more speed, and one hits harder and puts a bigger hole, so why not do all of those and just get a 10mm lol. This is coming from a guy that carries a p10f with +2 base pads so I've got a nice standard capacity of 21+1 lol. At my size, it's a compact lol. But I'd have zero issues carrying a single stack 45 and a couple extra mags. Long as the gun functions properly, it'll serve the purpose. Kimbers are so iffy though that it's just not really worth it anymore. But if you know how to Smith a bit, you can make them work fine with little effort. Shouldn't have to though. Bullet technology has had to help the 9mm be more capable, but that same technology has all but completely avoided the 45. Which is just sad. Reloading solves that issue.

Later, during field stripping and cleaning, I found the frame rails are wearing through to shiny aluminum. After 20 shots! This was too much. NO WAY this one was test fired. NO WAY it was ever Hard-coat anodized. I have photos of the extractor and a witness. Calling the factory gets me nothing. I have a letter going in. I am asking for a refund. Will likely get nothing. I noticed that after you ejected that first magazine and put in the 2nd one, there was o more malfunctioning. Is this any sort of a meaningful review? I think not. I would be more interested in seeing how that alloy frame holds up after 1000 rounds. If you can shoot 1000 rounds of .45 ACP and then come back with a review, it would be more meaningful to me. Just saying. Kind of like when Car and Briber does a review on a brand new car and advertises it as better than pockets on shirts. Bring that thing back after even 25,000 miles and see then if it's still running fine like it was in the beginning.
