FINALLY we get the director's cut of "Marshall's Rug Gallery Commercial". That opening drone shot is absolutely ESSENTIAL to understanding Rick's motivation in the third act.

The people want to experience the comedian in their element, enjoying what they do. They need you to take the lead so they can be a passenger. If they sense fear it fucks up the power dynamic. If they see that you're taking cues from their reactions , it devalues you and gives them power.... which is bad. Then they won't laugh and you'll bomb. The best approach is always preparation. Figure out what kind of audience it is days before (if possible) and have plenty of non-controversial material to get them started, then you can push it.

Mark always says he doesn't think the audience enjoys when they get into the weeds, but I find it very interesting. And Rick is a master aka phenomenal at breaking things down. #COMEDY!
You're right, Mark's concerns are valid but the people that go deep and are "cringey" are sooo woe is me, boohoo, tortured artist about their experience. Mark isn't like that, he pulls back the curtain in a way that's very insightful.

You talked way too much Rick - ruined the podcast and made your guest uncomfortable. He told you early on that he didn’t like the avenue you were taking the podcast down.
As someone who listens to other writing and comedy discussion type podcasts, you and Kevin getting into the nitty gritty of your writing, joke structure, stagecraft etc... was really great.

This episode is my favorite so far. Been watching eps back to back for the last 36 hours, and may I say, the first 24 of those fall under my "birthday" (yesterday). Fyi, this was a choice I made, I am ok lol.

At 48:40 Mark is definitely talking about TFATK or 2lazy2trys video on Schulz and Rogan talking about how comedians are like ethereal beings grabbing concepts for jokes out of the primordial ooze only accessible to comics
I can tell Marks humor is rooted in Norms dark sense of humor. Norm knew how to be on the edge of offensive- but while still delivering a clever joke. I feel like Mark is taking the building on the foundation Norm helped establish.
Mark is an ideal TYSO guest. You're different enough that the conversation is always interesting, but you're so on-the-same-page comedically and just in the way you communicate that there's rarely ever any fat or missed beats.
Going to Mark's point at 48:40 (I know exactly who he's talking about...and it's true), the thing I respect most about comedians/podcasters like yourselves (and Sam Morrill) is that there's no pretense or insulting the intelligence of your audience by acting like everything is "inside baseball". You accept that people either get it or they don't, and that's why you've both been able to find an audience/space in the podcast world that doesn't depend on being professional ass-kissers to the same clique of self-proclaimed free thinkers/free speech pioneers who just recycle the same ideas and talking points on every pod...which is ironic given how much they all seem to hate virtue signalling and high-mindedness.
Apologies for the rant...I just needed a pod like this today and wanted to basically say thanks! TYSO at its best!

I saved this all day , highlight pod of the week. That's above all 3 ymh, tws, Potter, ayg, bad friends, trash Tuesday, and honeydew. Plus more random ones that I don't hit every week.
Most comedy podcasts seem to be like this now. Pseudo intellectual stuff about differences and comedy that us "civilians" dont understand. There were some laughs but not as much as you'd expect from 2 funny guys
