I used this video to help create my social media portfolio. I don't have many clients under my belt, but it got the attention of a successful brick and mortar company in my area where I applied for an in house Social Media Manager position. I got offered an interview! Thanks Latasha! 😊

Latasha you are the best! You have helped me since I started my company! You helped me start, launch, find clients, girl, everything! And I’ve only been using your free content! My company is scaling up now and I am definitely going to sign up for coaching so I can kind of automate things alittle more. But this is just a reminder of how awesome you are! Never stop what you’re doing!
I’ve just graduated with my BA in Media & Communication and have been applying to jobs like mad, lots of gigs recommend attaching a portfolio, so this video has been SO helpful. I can’t thank you enough.
This was so so so helpful. Losing my job after covid, this was so helpful so I can better showcase my previous projects to keep freelancing. Truly appreciate it!
Thanks again for another great video! For someone who hasn’t had a social media client yet, but is reaching out to their first client, how would you recommend building a portfolio? Or what is the alternative to prove that you know what you’re talking about even though you technically haven’t had a client yet?
This is exactly what I needed. I'm new and as I build a portfolio instead of sending links from every account its cool to see how to properly document it
This is exactly what I need.. out here this is a new opportunity so I'd like to get into it as early as possible ☺🙏🏽 been interested in this for a while now & it's finally a thing in my country.. Thank you ❤
Hello Latasha, thank you for this video, i didn't understand about the case study? What is this? How should do it and what should I include on my case study?
This is super helpful! I was searching for a video like this in forever. I've been doing social media for a few years in my career and now it's been very popular and high in demand. I wasn't sure how I was going to show my work when I don't create the graphics or photography for the post, but you made it clear now. Idk why most businesses think as a SMM you would do the graphics and photos too. They do not know how much work it goes into doing social media. Anyways, I got to start my portfolio now.
You mentioned that you re wrote your landing page and got a huge up tick in sales. Is there a resource you can share on how to brush up on writing skills?
Soo inspiring! I've been a social media manager for the same brand for 3 months now, which is my only one client so far I got from Upwork haha. I was wondering how could I expand my portfolio without taking on too many clients at once? Also, when doing Facebook Ads for clients, how do you go about whose money to spend on ads? Do you spend the clients money or yours? Thanks!
Hey you could do a mini campaign for a smaller company for free to add to your portfolio or reach out to anyone you know who might need help with social media! And for Fb ads. I always hear that it should be paid by the client! Hope that helps!
Never spend your own money on client ads unless you’re working for free (to build your portfolio), otherwise they’re duping you. The client is paying you for a service - why use your own money to carry out that service? The amount of clients you can have at a time depends on the workload you can handle in addition to your time management/discipline/productivity. It’s wise to keep the number low in the beginning to focus on learning, quality, and building testimonials.
I want to make a portfolio but I don't have clients. Can I use companies as samples or what should I do to help show samples for interviews or for practices?
Hello Latasha, thank you for this amazing video! I have a question... I have experience as social media manager for clients that have online businesses, so how do i get more specific about it, how can i be saying the niche, for example? Both of the clients share educational content...
Hi Alexandra! That's not really my area of expertise. I optimize my site as best as I can but I'm not an expert by any means, I just follow what others on this site/Google recommend. I do have a video on UA-cam SEO though.
Can you anonymize their data? (i.e. "Skincare Company" instead of Brand Name) I mentioned that a bit at the end. Otherwise you may just want to find a portfolio project or build a case study on your own social profile, another project, etc.
Great content, as always! I guess I've never really had an actual SMM portfolio, other than Upwork and back when I did actual design work lol I mean unless you consider my work samples highlight...guess that could count!
Thanks Sílvia! Yeah, that's a good point. I have highlights on both of my IG accounts featuring some client testimonials and I think that totally counts for something, too.
Great topic and great video as always! I have a question about adding upwork work to a portfolio. Do you need to ask permission for putting work done on an upwork gig in your portfolio?
Thanks, Jessica! Hmm that's a good question. Generally speaking if it's something that's public facing (a blog post that still exists, a social post that's out there, etc.) I think it's fair game. But it's always good to ask just to be on the safe side!
@@thelatashajames Thanks for weighing in on my question! I've been doing a bunch of work on Upwork lately and wasn't sure if it was alright to screenshot some of the work and include in my portfolio. I like your idea of asking just to be safe. Thank you! :)

From watching your videos, I'm seeing that social media managers can also be content creators/influencers for other people (like your podcast example, kinda sponsored like deal). Hi! I've been a social media manager for a hair extensions company and just my two cents. Managers DO USUALLY outsource since artwork takes up a huge chunk of time, and it depends on that companies budget. What I would say is to have a candid conversation with your manager about you doing double roles (i.e. ensure you get compensated for your work) OR at the very least when you go in and ask for a raise you bring up that you save the company $$$ because you do the role of two people. Hope this helps :)

what if i want to apply for lululemon but i have done digital marketing services for local chinese restaurants majorly?
@latasha do you use SEO with your business? If so what does that look like? Can you make a video on what you do for SEO?

Latasha James is hashtags and keywords important for your social media content?
Do i realky need to make a social media account just to make a portfolio?
Hi Latasha, i heard its really hard nowadays to organically grow social media platforms.. And now one has to use ads Is that true?
In terms of compiling bits and pieces of my work, what if the clients prefer to be discreet about the work partnership... it is a bit tricky.
Can you anonymize their data? (i.e. "Skincare Company" instead of Brand Name) I mentioned that a bit at the end. Otherwise you may just want to find a portfolio project or build a case study on your own social profile, another project, etc.
@@thelatashajames For example it is a video or a graphic for them, do I remove the logo to anonymize...
